 It's not too cumbersome.

If you use GNOME or other GTK+ based desktop, you might perfer gcolor2.

Perhaps sites like this would be less attractive if the GIMP team would

The GIMP team doesn't officially provide any Windows binaries.

[Gimp-user] Rough metallic surface

2011-07-31 Thread Mikael Ståldal
I wanted to make a rough metallic surface and I ended up with this by
fiddling around with a back-to-white gradient and emboss it. I finally
got a clean 200x200 image that alings seamlessy and can be used as a
pattern:

http://www.staldal.nu/gimp/patterns/metallic.pat

(You can make it golden by colorify with yellow.)

Are there any other strateiges for making a rough metallic surface?

(Feel free to use this pattern if you like it.)

Not really, I haven't been able to figure out how to configure that in

Anyone knows?

Well, sort of. The stylus becomes less responsive, for some reason. For
example, if I draw a series of consecutive lines, every third or fourth
one will not appear, as if the stylus has stopped working or something.

Using Color-Colorify and choosing pure yellow (#00) after embossing
gives it gold-like look. You can also try with a slightly orange color
such as #fff000.

[Gimp-user] Noise reduction

2011-07-21 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Is there any better noise reduction filter for GIMP than the built in
Wavelet Denoise? It does remove the noise, but also make the image a bit
blurry.

Wavelet Denoise in ufraw has the same problem.

I know it is possible to do it better since my new camera, Canon
PowerShot S95, does it better when saving to JPEG. But the camera
doesn't do noise reduction when saving to RAW.

I'm using the UFRaw plugin to GIMP for importing RAW images. However, if

I haven't used UFRaw in a while, but I remember that that option and
some others were available only if you start UFRaw as a standalone
application, not as a GIMP plug-in. So as a workaround you can run
UFRaw separately and save the photos as PNGs to open in GIMP.

Yes, now I found it. Actually, once it is set there, it works as I want
it in the GIMP plugin as well. Nice.

Luckily Darktable exists now so one doesn't have to bother with UFRaw
  on Linux anymore.

What advantages does Darktable offer over GIMP with UFRaw plugin?

[Gimp-user] Short book review: GIMP 2.6 Cookbook

2011-06-26 Thread Mikael Ståldal
I recently brought the book GIMP 2.6 Cookbook.

When opening the book, I was very disappointed that all the numerous
images inside the book was printed in black/white, no color at all
except on the cover.

I find it outright stupid to print such a book without color. I have
other books with full color which wasn't significally more expensive
(such as Beginning GIMP).

Don't buy this book.

P.S. The PDF they sell is in full color. And wasn't significally more
 expensive doesn't really say anything.

OK, let's see at Amazon.com:

Beginning GIMP (full color, 557 pages)$31.17
GIMP 2.6 Cookbook (no color, 393 pages) $38.19

So I was wrong, the book in color is actually cheaper and the GIMP 2.6
Cookbook is quite expensive compared to other books about GIMP.

Fair enough, but considering the difference in page number I guess that

So I still think it was outright stupid to print it without color.
