I just choose raw (a long list of raw type files near the bottom select list for
file types - if you choose to select the file type yourself).

You're perfectly right about the meaning of the name, and I'm sorry for my
absentmindedness. Which does not change the fact that image drawing is not
the most fundamental usage of GIMP, and that the author of the initial
message did not look seriously in the book.
