Hi,
I need to increase the sharpness in some of my photographs but I cannot find
the "Value" function in the "layers" menu.
Could you let me know where to find it.
Thanks very much in advance.

I have found The Book of Gimp, by Olivier Lecarme and Karine Delvare to be a
marvelous resource, well worth the money for a new GIMPer, especially if you
are coming over from the dark side >}:^{D> (Adobe Photoshop).

Hi Belleo,
do you remember which version of GIMP you used on the previous systems you had?
The latest stable GIMP has been in version 2.8.x since 2.8.0 was released around
2012
- three years ago (see https://github.com/GNOME/gimp/commits/master/NEWS ), and
not too much changed in the UI there.

Of course GIMP can open jp2 files. Where did you hear that it cannot?

what do you mean by 'official build' - i installed the gimp 2.8 on windows
10 from the official gimp site five days ago. although several reviews
implied that 2.8 does have .jp2 capability i see no tangible manifestation
of such.

I presume you are asking me about "official build". Michael can tell
you more about it.
It's the build provided by GIMP maintainers. If that build does not
include jp2 support, you'll have to ask Michael.
My builds obtained from my website have jp2 support built in.

It does that if JPEG-2000 support is compiled in. This is not
necessarily so for all builds out there.

Perhaps.
I assumed that the official build would have it built in as mine does.
