This is a screen shot of the issue. I had a 3500x3500 image I was putting together. I opened an image as a layer and when I move it around the screen it creates this lag. It should go in your Gimp profile or for Windows can be installed with Windows fonts (never a good idea). As the screenshot: Works in Linux and Win10, both Gimp 2.8.22 Linux I used my Gimp profile, Windows I installed into Windows fonts. For windows Gimp did take some time starting, 'searching for fonts' Could be that your font cache is broken. Sans is the default font used when a font is not available. Example: You get a Gimp .xcf file from someone else. It contains text using a font not installed for you. Re: [Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10-RC1 Previews Loading Slowly
I've had some similar issues working with large images, here's some things I've found. First of all, if your image is in 16-bit precision, your operations are going to be slow. GEGL is apparently optimized for 8-bit int and 32-bit float, so paradoxically you'll actually get a much smoother experience if you change the image precision to 32 bit floating point. Trying to, That's gotten the new GIMP to be pretty usable for me. It's still not as zippy as the 2.8 series was, but it's also crunching a lot more data over 8-bit images. On 04/11/2018 04:45 PM, jkhan wrote: Good evening from a new user of GIMP, I am venturing into some basic photo editing and installed 2.10 after realizing the stable release (2.8.22) didn't support 16 bit color TIF files without being converted to 8 bit. After installing the program, I noticed it's running pretty slowly. Most menus in the color menu are loading slowly but the most noticeable thing I'm noticing is that it's taking anywhere from 10-12 seconds to load any preview for any color adjustment. Now I'm definitely new so I don't know much about this, but is this normal for 2.10? I am editing TIF files around 155MB and am running v2.10 on my Lenovo Y700. It's running Windows 10 with 16GB of RAM, Intel core i7 6700HQ @ 2.60GHZ and a GTX 960M. The photos and GIMP are running off my SSD. What I'm noticing, however, is that during the sluggish performance, my task manager is showing my cpu usage never reaches 50% and my RAM usage stays around 50%. I have tried various fixes on the internet including increasing tile cache size from 7 to 14 GB and increasing the undo memory. I have tried disabling color management. None of these have worked to reduce or remove the sluggishness. The same files I'm trying to edit on v2.10 don't reproduce the same sluggishness on the stable release 2.8.22. The preview consistently loads in 2 or 3 seconds. To wrap up here, I'm just looking for some help on whether this is a real problem or just a result of the various system and file factors I listed above. I don't have this problem when I run Pixlr and when I ran my demo of > photoshop. The only times I have seen the GIMP act like that (15+ years across /numerous/ machines and operating systmes) it was always a memory issue, typically due to working on a fairly huge image with many full size layers and LOTS of "undo" steps saved. Fist check the size of the images you are working with, in pixels: This is shown in the canvas window title bar, after the name of the open file. If the X and Y dimensions are in the multiple thousands of pixels, that could be the problem. I will guess that you are using GIMP 2.8, not a development build; if not, this may be incorrect (or not): Go to Edit > Preferences, and in the Environment menu (should be the one that opens by itself) and check the Tile Cache Size item. "When the amount of pixel data exceeds this limit, GIMP will start to swap tiles to disk." That sounds very much like what you are seeing when you move things around on the canvas. I normally like to set this limit to about half of total system RAM, more if the machine has a huge amount of memory, less if the system doesn't have memory to spare. On my laptop which does not have a huge amount of memory, I start seeing a /small/ amount of lag when moving image-sized layers at about 2500 x 2500 pixels - noticeable, but does not slow my workflow down. At 4000 x 4000 pixels it gets more noticeable; I would have to adjust my maximum image size setting (same menu as above) to test at 4500 px or above... Hopefully this will put you on the trail to a solution. If none of the above seems to apply, check all running processes on the machine to see if some background process is eating up a huge amount of system memory. poss8ible. :o) ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list

The image is at https://www.flickr.com/gp/alterit/kaR248 > e > There may be a few reason. It's hard to tell with just one image. (1) Maybe you created or opened a grayscale image. Check menu: Image > Mode. (2) Maybe you are on a layer whose mode would make your red appear gray. In my tests, the layer mode "Lightness (LCH)" would do such a thing. (3) Maybe you are painting on your white layer with such a mode, e.g. "Lightness (LCH)" again, for instance (check the painting mode in the tool options). (4) It would be possible also you use a bitmap brush (whose color cannot be changed), though looking at your screenshot, it looks like one of the base round brushes. But I write it down, just in case. I'm sure there are other reasons which could explain painting in gray. Bottom line: check your layer or painting modes, check the image mode, and check your chosen brush. If that is not enough, try to reset the tool option and maybe also the dynamics, just to be sure (there is a color settings in dynamics too, so maybe you set a weird one?). You probably just activated some settings somewhere. :-) Jehan > I do not use imgur and can't remember that I have ever heard about it > before your email. > > Regards > Johann > > -- > J.H.
