False positives are fairly common. Most commonly used antivirus programs
think the installer is fine:

That's the thing with new options and preferences: they aren't
discoverable, and people tend to avoid reading release notes. I mean,
people are still discovering the single-window mode after almost 10
years! :)

There are some less intrusive ways to make people aware of new
options. I did file https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/5541
a while ago, and it looks like Jehan is interested in implementing
that at some point in the future. That should take away some friction.

Oh, right. Ctrl-Z. About that.

When you do cropping _and_ you apply a bunch of changes on top of it,
you have to go all the way back to redo cropping if you want it done
differently. And _then_ you have to redo all the other changes all
over again. Until last year, the only alternative was to crop as the
very last step which is kind of annoying because that's not
necessarily one's intention.

You don't have to understand the workflows of all the other GIMP
users, you do you. But _we_ do have to understand the variety of uses
of GIMP. Kind of our job, however unpaid. So we do it. We actually
listen to what users want, and it's non-destructive editing. Denying
that won't get you anywhere. Enabling the "Delete cropped pixels"
option, however, will bring you back the behaviour you want, forever.
I guess you already tried that? Please tell us if it fixes the
behavior for you.

I hope I got it right.

Personally, I'm perfectly fine with 1). People have different use
cases and workflows, that's why this is an option rather than a
hardcoded behavior. Once you set it to do what you want it to do, it
stays that way forever.

However, 2) is factually incorrect based on users' feedback we've got
so far. Hence "ditching it" would actually mean that we do _not_
listen to users.

We _might_ reconsider enabling this option by default though, but that
would require vastly more people chiming in to tell us to, indeed,
reconsider.

I hope it makes sense to you.

reasons that GIMP developers have little control over (I can elaborate
if you want me to). GIMP 2.99.x beta builds and upcoming GIMP 3.0 have
full support for HiDPI displays. You can try 2.99.6 at your risk:

port existing solutions like the refocus-it plug-in to support the
latest GIMP tech properly. _And_ then maintain it. We don't have the
resources to do that currently.

P.S. I'm not sure why you are so hell-bent on insulting the very
people that you expect to do something for your own benefit. This is
not what people do in a healthy community. Perhaps you could consider
taking this rhetorics down a notch?

Dear Michael,

If I were to summarize our conversation with GNOME Foundation a few

should the name of this project be changed, it will happen on team's
own terms — the decision, the timing, the name etc.

However, if your patience is running out, I encourage you to use

GIMP has roughly 600K lines of code in C for UI one way or another.
Could you please explain why you want GIMP 3.0 released in 2030
instead of some time in 2022 maybe? :)

For the same reason, could you please explain why you want
non-destructive editing released in 2033/2034 as part of v3.2 instead
of in a few years?

Finally, could you please explain why you think it's a good idea to
use very limited time of very few existing contributors to learn
programming for a whole new toolkit rather than deal with a gazillion
of non-GTK issues that GIMP has?

Please tell me...

Will Qt automagically improve image processing performance?

Will Qt automagically add non-destructive editing?

Will Qt automagically add shape drawing tools?

Will Qt automagically add smart objects / link layers?

Will Qt automagically add native text layers support in PSD?

Will Qt automagically add better CMYK support?

The vast majority of things users expect us to fix have nothing to do
with the toolkit.

Linux is more than just a program, it's the base (called "kernel") of a
whole operating system (GNU/Linux, there are many flavors of it).

If your plan is to continue using Chrome OS, I would suggest exploring
options other than GIMP.

If you feel adventurous, you can try to switch to Linux and use GIMP there.

Neither v2.4 nor v2.10 are practical choices for this sort of thing,
the reason being, both versions rasterize a text layer once you rotate
it. Inkscape would be a vastly better tool for this.

The text tool definitely needs revisiting but it simply doesn't have
the problem you are describing.

I'm guessing you are referring to sRGB there. I can't see how GIMP

Two years ago we had three active developers hacking on GIMP like
there was no tomorrow.

We lost one of them entirely, it seems, and another one is mostly
preoccupied with family business, so we are down to one active
developer and a few new active contributors. We are also approaching
the end of very long and tiresome work on refactoring which is not
done yet. Also, a lot of time of that one active developer was spent
figuring out ways to make development of GIMP sustainable (no details
at this point in time, sorry). So yes, there are several critical
areas where help is needed. Color management is clearly one of them.

I guess if you adjust your expectations accordingly, you will see that
there is no acting in bad faith here.

You gave us only two actionable items:

- Fuzzy selection tool is hard to use without understanding settings like
threshold which will vary from image to image — there is nothing
GIMP-specific about it.

- There is no visual control over canvas rotation other than resetting it
via the menu, which I think is a good point. Although your rant did crack
me up because this is the first time someone ever reported not being able
to discover this feature. Literally everybody else discovered it and then
some hated us for not providing a switch to disable it (also a good idea).

There is nothing to comment on the rest of your email. You made it pretty
clear that you are just venting and not acting in good faith, so not much
point to expect you to come through as a sensible person. And contrary to
another suggestion, personally, I don't want a person with this kind of
energy on this team.

Should you reconsider and start making actionable reports, I will be happy

However you can find try install G'MIC plug-in which has some

The work was done in GEGL and babl really :)

@Klaus

GIMP's processing engine is capable of loading a CMYK TIFF file,
processing it with a filter or placing an RGB image over it, then
saving it all back to CMYK TIFF. We need volunteers to plug this all
into GIMP. This would require changing both core functions and file
plugins (TIFF, JPEG, PSD).

Hello Klaus,

What your questions really are:

Could one team of overworked people writing code in one programming
language figure out a whole new huge code base written in an entirely
different language to help another team of overworked people?

I'd say, chances of that are slim :)

And no, there is neither chance nor reason to use Krita's code either.

Indeed, yes. Older versions of GIMP typically can't handle newer
versions of XCF.

If you don't use masks or the fancier kind of blending modes like
linear light or hard mix, or higher bit depth precision, you can use
OpenRaster for passing multiple layers around.

As far as I can tell, no.

There are, however, tools for git repo analysis, such as
https://github.com/ejwa/gitinspector.

Also, please note that this information is limited in several ways,
including but not limited to these:

1) you only get information about users who made a contribution, not all users.
2) part of the information is incorrect because back in CVS and SVN
days, contributors without write access to the repository could not be
directly credited as in 'commit author', instead, they were credited
in commit messages.
3) GIMP didn't always have a VCS at all.

- Improved HEIC and newly added AVIF support
- Numerous improvements in the PSP file format support
- Improved multi-layer TIFF exporting
- Better handling of the Exif “Orientation” metadata
- New “Sample merged” option in the GEGL operation tool

Details: https://www.gimp.org/news/2020/10/07/gimp-2-10-22-released/

Windows installer is available, so is the flatpak for Linux.
Unfortunately, we won't have a build for macOS until someone steps up

I don't have Windows close at hand but I'm fairly certain that you
should be able to open the properties dialog for the GIMP launcher in
the Windows menu or the quickstart panel (try right clicking on 'GIMP
2.10.20' in the menu?). That properties dialog displays the full path
to the executable file. You should append " -n" (space and -n) to that
full path right after ".exe". Save and close. Now every time you start
GIMP from the menu or the quickstart panel (depending on where you
edited that launcher).

That's exactly where the toolbox has always been. Nothing has changed.

You can easily do that too, with the text tool. Click inside the text
layer, Ctrl+A to select all text, then change font size in the toolbar
just above the text frame.

> - The automatic closure, as a straight line, of the freehand selection tool.

I don't think I understand this one. When you use the Freehand Select
tool to make polygonal selection, all you need to do to close the
selection is to click on the beginning of your selection. That's all.

Same as before: single or double-click on the FG or BG color in the toolbox.

I didn't exactly forget this. The last time I asked, which was,
admittedly, a few years ago, each of the two popular mailing lists had
1K subscribers tops. That might sound like a lot but it really pales
by comparison to the reach we regularly get on social networks. For
the record, our top tweets within any single month regularly get ca.
35K impressions and we got 800+ new subscribers just in May (so far).
So it's more of a priority concern.

Besides, I tend to use rich media (screenshots, videos) to illustrate
new stuff. This does not play well with mailing lists at all.

That said, if you think list subscribers should be notified of new
changes and ongoing work, I'll definitely make a mental note of
sending text announcements to lists as well. That should not take long
at all.

[Gimp-user] Interview with Ell

2020-05-04 Thread Alexandre Prokoudine via gimp-user-list
Hello,

A few days ago, I published an interview with Ell, one of the most
active GIMP developers. We talked about things like beginning to
contribute to a software project like GIMP, i.e. old large codebase,
and also about some of his further plans for the project.

Enjoy :)

It was removed over a year ago for being irreparably slow. A far
better replacement for GEGL-based filters (incl. White Balance) is
coming in the next release.

Okay, so I grabbed the file and opened it in FontForge. I'm guessing
you are talking about glyphs towards the bottom.

https://i.imgur.com/kWDJqXY.png

They all have '-1' Unicode value. This is so messed up. Basically you
have two options:

1. Find software that would access glyphs that don't belong to any
Unicode block. I think the only one that did that was Fontmatrix, and
it's not in the Ubuntu repository anymore. Maybe in some PPAs.

2. Use FontForge to map the glyphs that you need to real Unicode
characters inside known blocks. As a quick hackaround, you could use
smth like Latin Extended A or Latin Extended B:
https://unicode-table.com/en/blocks/latin-extended-b/.

For that, if my understanding is correct:

1. Use 'Encoding > Compact' to see everything in one window
2. Click to select a glyph you want to remap
3. Use 'Element > Glyph Info..."
4. Set new value using reference in the link above, press OK

When you are done, uncheck 'Compact' encoding option, export the font
file, install it instead of the one you already installed.

In fact, there's option 3: annoy the type designer just enough to get
this fixed :)

Hello,

Any half-decent font manager, including free ones, will give you the
possibility to open the full map of characters, pick the one you need,
then copy/paste it.

Mentioning GIMP in the credits is up to creators of the movie.

P.S. We are not used to being asked for that sort of thing. We usually

darktable doesn't support CR3 yet:

RawTherapee does support CR3.

It looks like the kind of hacked-up stuff that Map Suite does:

https://github.com/ThinkGeo/MultipleJpeg2000RasterLayerSample-ForWpf

I could be entirely ignorant on this, but if someone extends a file
format beyond what it was designed to do, expecting other applications
to just support that would probably be a bit on the optimistic side :)

Hello!

You'd have to tell us four more things:

1. Version of GIMP
2. Operating system and its version
3. Whether you see any error messages
4. Whether JP2 is listed in the file type selector in the Open File dialog

Hi Dave,

I feel a little lost in the description of what you are trying to
achieve, but the general principle is:

1. Open your background layer.
2. 'File > Open as Layer' for the image that will be on top.
3. 'File > Export As' to export to JPG.

If, for some reason, your background layer ends up on the very top,
drag it towards the bottom or use the button that is shaped like an
arrow pointing down.

Wait, are we talking about color picker which is a tool for picking
colors from images or a color selector dialog when you tell GIMP what
color to use for foreground and/or background?

If it's color picker, you can choose the Pixel option in the drop-down
list that's in the top right corner of the canvas. In that case,
channel values will be displayed in whatever pixel format your image
is in: 8-bit int, 16-bit int/float, or 32-bit int/float.

If it's color selection dialog (e.g. what you get when you
double-click on the foreground color in the toolbox), then your only
option to get better precision right now is to switch from 0.255 to
0..100 at the top of the dialog. That will yield a 0..100 range with
one decimal. Not nearly as precise as a full 16-bit int range, I know.

Hello,

I'm not sure why an obsolete thread from 2018 is being brought back to
life, but just to point out: BIMP 2.0 was released in Nov 2018 with
GIMP 2.10 support, there have been two updates since then.

I would strongly advise using the Pixel option instead. It gives
exactly the precision of the actual pixel data.

So if the image is 16-bit float, this will yield
(0,014557;0,053680;0,827148) for what is (32;66;235) in RGB. That
should be precise enough :)

Supporting more file format versions of ABR is a known feature
request. We have a quick fix that we haven't applied yet. We need to
review it, and if it's good enough, this will make it to the next
release.

Meanwhile, you can use a Windows program called abrMate to convert to
an old version of the file format.

Personally, I can see this happening for the stable series, i.e. what
is now the 2.10.x branch. Our build process is now more or less
automated for flatpak (Linux) and dmg (macOS), and we think we can do
that for WIndows eventually. That simplifies quite a lot of work,
although the last few Win/Mac updates required manual intervention. In
fact, we recently put two updated Windows installers — one because of
an important fix in GEGL, and one because of a fix for a broken 3rd
party component.

As for the release frequency, we try to make a release around LGM
time, which is usually April-May, we did 2.10.6 and 2.10.12 in the
summer time, and we did 2.10.8 and 2.10.14 in late autumn before the
Xmas madness. That already sounds like a plan.

That said, I don't think it's entirely possible for the unstable
branch. Mitch keeps uncovering bad code all the time, and once you
start pulling a funny-smelling rope, there's always a chance there's a
rotting corpse on the other end of it, if you pardon my analogy :)

It might make sense to add transformation in straight lines the way it
works with brush-based tools. Could you please file a feature request
for that?

Again, it might make sense to enable painting symmetry for the Warp
Transform tool. Although I'm not sure that's what you need in this
scenario. Maybe you are thinking of grid warping?
