Done.

I cannot select text when the editor is active. I have to close the
editor, select text on the canvas, and then [x] Use editor on the
options panel.

It is (still) not clear what "change baseline" is supposed to do.

Yes, not being able to select text is what I referred do.

Kerning and letter spacing are not the same thing. Or shouldn't be ;-)

Kerning automatically adjust spacing between letters, e.g. moving V and
A closer together so that they look as if they are evenly spaced.
Kerning uses data included with the fonts. Pair Kerning normally has two
settings (on and off); adjusting the spacing between a specific pair of
characters is also called kerning - either "every V/A pair" or "this
particular pair".

Letter spacing is a constant amount of space added to (or subtracted
from) the glyph advance between every pair of characters.

If that's not how the terms are used, please file a bug.

Yes, the text editor does not support all of the typographical features.

There was a move to remove it, but there are useability problems with
removing it - especially when you have text on a path, or if your text
doesn't all fit on the screen.

They work fine here, but you have to have selected some text on the
canvas.

works here (but I have a pre-release of 2.8) although you can't select
text.

yes.

Especially if you report them so the developers discover it too,
and even sooner if you include a patch :-)

Thanks! I needed some experimenting to get used to the new facility but
it sure looks handy and efficient. It still needs some work, though.

Since we now have three ways to control text properties there's a risk
of confusing descriptions. For example, the text options panel has
"Adjust line spacing" while the tool box overlay has "Change baseline of
selected font". The options panel has "Adjust letter spacing" while the
tool box overlay has "Change kerning of selected text". The text editor
seems to be consistent with the tool box overlay.

Several features do not seem to function properly. In particular, the
text editor seems to behave strange. See e.g.
http://www.squirrel.nl/pub/xfer/uploads/3CAk4t63w4ZFPF_047osONJA.png

In the text options, the kerning is adjusted with +10. This can be seen
on the canvas. The second word "the" has had the kerning changed back to
0.

In the text editor, the text is not shown with +10 kerning and,
surprise, the second word "the" is not unkerned, but lowered.

Changing the baseline using the semi-transparent tool box does not have
any effect, neither does changing the baseline in the text editor.
Changing it in the 'classical' tool options dialog does work.

When the text editor is shown, the on-cavas editing doesn't work
anymore.

In the text editor, when you want to change e.g. the font size of a
piece of text, strange things happen. For example, select the word
"quick" and then go to the font size field and use the mouse wheel. The
selection is lost and although the font size (number) changes, no text
is affected.

I consider these "first release" inconveniences that beyond doubt will
get fixed soon.

All by all the new text features are promising.

Ah, now that looks fine! Thanks, Johan.

Looks like 2.7.4's version is 'work in progress' between what 2.6 does
and 2.8 does, so will hold on until Mageia updates to 2.8.

Thank you nce again ,

  Mmm. That's what 2.6 does also. Perhaps there's a bug in 2.7.4?

Johan, when you say (in (2)) "...where the text entered appears", does
anything also appear in the 'font settings' window as you enter text?

No, I didn't touch the Font field. The only thing that happened in
that window was that any text entered appeared there in the top left-
hand field (but - sadly - not in the 'dynamic' field).

With 2.8RC1:

(1) A window appears showing the current font settings
(2) A 'dynamic window' appears where the text entered appears.

Did you abuse the Font field of the font settings window for text entry?

I must admit that I haven't yet figured out how to use the font settings
'window'.

Re: [Gimp-user] Problem with Gimp 2.7.4 'Text' facility

2012-05-06 Thread Maurice
During my trialling of Mageia-2 (Beta3) I find it provides Gimp
2.7.4, but the Text function doesn't work as in 2.6.

I would be most grateful if someone could confirm this (as it might be
some setting I've missed):

With Gimp 2.7.4 (and presumably later), if you select 'Text' (the big
'A'), then click somewhere on an image, two things will appear:

  (1) At the place where you clicked, a 'dynamic' window* will appear
  (2) Above it a text-entry window will appear.

When text is entered into (2), it does *not* appear in (1). Agreed?
(Whereas with Gimp 2.6, it *does*.)

Can anyone see how to make the text also appear in the 'dynamic' window
(apart from manual Copy/Paste)?

(* I don't know what the Gimp term for that window is.)

Many thanks!
