Hi,

how can I use the bucket-fill option to fill an area surrounded by a dotted
line?

The dotted line is a path; so if I use a line for the dots, the bucket-fill
works.

But how can I step back after filling to change the path's line into dots
again?

Other have answered about creating a selection form the path and filling
the selection, preferably on a distinct layer.

But even if you had a continuous line the plain-bucket fill would not
give the expected result. Used that way it either leaves a faint space
along the line, or gives it a jagged edge. The reason is that the edge
of the line is made of anti-aliasing pixels, that either have a color
which is a blend of the line color and the background color, or are
partially transparent if the line is on a transparent layer. Then the
bucket-fill in 'normal' mode always either completely paints the pixels
(jagged edge) or doesn't paint them at all (space) .

If the line is on a transparent layer you can use the bucket-fill in
"behind" mode. In behind mode the painting only applies to whatever
transparency is left in a pixel. If you produced the line from a path,
make a selection from it and fill it. Otherwise, use the wand to make a
rough selection on the background, then "grow" that selection to include
the edge pixels of the line, then bucket-fill.

IMHO, this is a partial solution. It works, but is sub optimal if the is ANY
chance that you might want to edit this in the future.

The full correct solution would be to make a selection and save to a channel.
Cancel the selection(this part is important!!) Create a new layer ABOVE the
one with the path. Right click on the new layer and add a layer mask, with
your channel as the "source". Ensure you have the layer(and not the mask!)
selected in the layers window and just drag your color of course to the top
layer. The new color will be constrained to the the layer mask created.

The benefit to this approach is that you don't destroy the original layer in
any way since you did not modify it!!! Just make sure to Save the result xcf
file so that if you need to change the color or whatever at a later time, you
can easily open the xcf and just drag a new color to that top layer.

If you want to add an effect such as having the "filled" section have a slight
blur to it for a gradual fade out, click on the layer mask for the top layer,
and apply your blur.

Since I almost always use layer masks in my compositions, I can't honestly
remember the last time I used the bucket fill tool(though I'm sure it has some
uses).

You could make your path a selection and then fill that selection.

There's a button at the bottom of the Paths tab that looks like a
dotted-line square--that's Path to Selection. Click that, then fill. Should
be fine.

Good luck!

Hi Bill.
You see the checkerboard because the layer is set as a transparency (without
color). After enlarging the canvas, try creating a new layer with the
background color you wish then position it at the bottom of the enlarged canvas.

The problem is that with the default settings there's no layer area
in that newly created, free space.

The easiest way is to
1. Go back before the Image/Canvas Size... step,
2. set the color you want to have in your horizontal space (for instance
white) as background color,
3. in Image/Canvas Size..., listbox 'Resize layers' choose 'All layers'.
I assumed you have only one layer. Otherwise another option except
'None' would be appropriate.
You save the Bucket Fill step to achieve the same and in future you
can start with step 2.

4. Optional: If you want to fill your space with a gradient or similar
use the Rectangle Select Tool or Fuzzy select tool, select the space
and fill the selection according to your needs.

Kind regards,

Sven

Hi friends,

I think I make mistakes in using the bucket-fill - option of GIMP.

I want to use it for colouring (don't grin - by different shades of
grey 5-10%)

to make in black-and-white maps details like lakes or defined areas
better visible.

I tried it as follows:

I choose the layer where to use the fill in, choose the colour and
click to the area,

but the whole layer is coloured. I searched for help via the GIMP
website, but I

was not successful following the advices.

So at the moment I use the fill-in-option of Photoshop 6, but that's
much too

complicated: Export from GIMP to tiff, import to Photoshop, fill-in,
save as

tiff, re-import to GIMP as a new layer.

My file is about 1,3 GB (!) with 57 layers and Photoshop 6 is not able
to work

with any file as big.

I appreciate yor help!

Konrad

In the Tool options dialog, in the "Affected area" section, check if it
is "Fill whole selection" (likely not what you want, unless you have a
selection) or "Fill similar colors".
