I'm a new user to GIMP. I have been thru Akkana Peck's book.
I have used preferences to remove the reference to the Windows Font Folder
and inserted my own Font Folder.
GIMP sees my Font Folder but still picks up Windows Fonts. Is there a way to
eliminate Windows Fonts from being seen by GIMP?
Hello. How can I reproduce the carved text effect as used on window
title bars in Mac OS X? Here is a screenshot of Mac OS X in use:

Please notice the text string, which looks a bit carved in.

Tom,
there are several ways to lighten up shadows, which to choose is difficult
to say without the image. If you send me the image (RAW and your tiff) I
would love to give them a try in my video podcast at http://meetthegimp.org.

I just downloaded GIMP 2 last night and after installing it, I gave it a
whirl. It pops up a near endless series of messages that read: The Procedure
entry point g_return_if_Fail_warning could not be located in the dynamic link
library libglib-2.0-0.dll.
I tried renaming/removing the file but
I took out all font folders using the preferences dialog and
sometimes GIMP will hang for a long time looking for fonts.
Weird!

I've been playing with this over the last few days. Here are my thoughts on
the subject:
I think some designers call this the letterpress effect. There are
different ways to do it. It takes a while to find the right way.
For the particular effect on the image you link to, I might try this:

Hi. Thank you very much for the detail explanation. What I overlooked is
to try blending mode. I played various setting for drop-shadow but not
get even close to the good image I got by using blending mode like
Overlay and Soft Light.
