What I ended up doing was to add anher layer, add my color and then merge
visible layers, then went to the next fram.e I tried using the floating
cross section, but couldnt' see to get the hang of it. Anyway,
goodlearning expereince. I had read the Grokking the Gimp tutorial, but I
do learn better by doing.

I'm using SuSE 7.0 - it seems to manage everything quite nicely. Won't
disucss the f&*$%#g scanner and printer tho. Had the printer working for a
day or so, now it refuses to run. Prior to putting Linux 6.2, and now 7.0
on this Pentium II six or so months ago, my only real onhands experience
was with a 1985 XT. (And a few hours using photoshop at a friends house)
I did do the majority of my 20 meg+ website on the XT, though.

SHARP learning curve...

The best thing to do for your future projects is too look at GAP - Gimp Animation
Package. It is an advanced way how to work with animation that enables you to use
layers in their original sense in animation. Check out a tutorial at
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/gimp/

Kate -

I just loaded your animated gif into the Gimp (1.2). All the
layers
are there. Just look at the Layers & Channels dialog box. You
can
get at each layer individually.

To view a single layer, turn off (by clicking) the eye icon next
to the
layers you *don't* wish to see. Click on the layer name to
select it as
the active layer and you can then work with it.

Your best sources of information are

1. Grokking the Gimp:

2. The Gimp User Manual

To find them, go to the Xtns menu of the Gimp, select Web
Browser, and
hey presto, there are built-in links to the manual and Grokking
the Gimp,
along with other useful sites.

Hope this helps,

OK - so it wasn't me, after all.

Thanks. I'll know next time. :)

Yeah, I guess so - -8->

or rather, http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/ Section 9.1

9.1.1 Using GIF Files for Animation
9.1.2 GIMP Layers Can Behave Like Animation Frames
9.1.3 Saving Animations to GIF
9.1.4 A Second Example of Creating a GIF Animation
9.1.5 Animation Optimization
9.1.6 IWarp

I believe you can disassemble/reassemble animated Gifs, (with
various Windoze software) but it looks like it would be a lot
more fun to work with Gimp layers (check out the transparency stuff)

Your pissoff file is a Gif, so there's no way to get it back to
the original Gimp native format if you didn't save a copy of the
file in .XCF before converting/saving as Gif because:

"... This is the only format that can save all the GIMP features
and states when working on a project. If your image contains multiple
layers, channels, selections, or paths, you must save using the XCF
format to avoid losing parts of your work." (from Section 9.2)

Happy Gimping, happy reading, get that dog housebroken, eh.

Doesn't seem to help. I want to be able to flip back to any one of the
layers in the animation for revisions. All that appears is the final one.
