Re: [Gluster-devel] Branching out Gluster docs

2018-03-17 Thread Humble Devassy Chirammal
Hi Nigel,

I am fine with branching out current master to a new branch and keep
master with 4.x series as long as the urls are properly redirected or
doesnt give 404. That said, gluster documentation is referred from various
sources and we should not break it.

Regarding version banner, I am more than 100% happy to have it.

[Gluster-devel] Container Repo Change + > 50K downloads of Gluster Container images

2016-10-20 Thread Humble Devassy Chirammal
Hi All,

We have kept our official Gluster Container images in Docker hub for
CentOS and Fedora distros for some time now.

https://hub.docker.com/r/gluster/gluster-centos/
https://hub.docker.com/r/gluster/gluster-fedora/

I see massive increase in the download of these container images for past
few months. This is indeed a good sign. :) .. It seems that, we will be
crossing 100k+ downloads soon. :)

As a side note, to address some of the copyright issues, I have renamed our
source container repo to "https://github.com/gluster/gluster-containers;
from "https://github.com/gluster/docker;. Whoever forked this repo or
contributing to this repo may take a note of this change .

Please let us know if you have any queries on this.

Re: [Gluster-devel] Documentation @ readthedocs.org - search broken

2016-01-23 Thread Humble Devassy Chirammal
Hi Andre,

Thanks for pointing this. Yes, we see its broken due to some rearrangement
in the directory structure of 'features' and 'feature planning'
directories. This happens mainly because, the search results are still
taken from the previous directory layout and not the latest one.
We are working on this with readthedocs team and hopefully will have a
resolution soon. Till then you can also go through
the feature pages repo which is https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs-specs.

Please let us know if you need any help.

As you know, the "Developer Guide" is now part of glusterfs source code (
https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/tree/master/doc/developer-guide) [1].
The decision to split the glusterfs documentation into three parts (
developer spec/feature , Administration ) came late and it caused the
bookmark to break.

Being Media Wiki READONLY, we thought this type of documents can be part
of Developer Guide for now. May be we need to sort the "developer guide" in
source code repo again and put it into correct buckets, but this needs
some time and effort.

HI All,

I thought all specifications and design documented were supposed to get
pushed into Gerrit for glusterfs-specs?

glusterfs-specs in github is READONLY mirror of*
http://review.gluster.org/#/q/project:glusterfs-specs
* project in gerrit,
same as glusterfs project.

So, the feature spec should land in gerrit first and review can happen from
there.

Its not there yet.

To conclude:

The admin docs patches has to go in *https://github.com/gluster/glusterdocs
* as PRs . As soon as the patch is
merged it will reflect in gluster.readthedocs.org.

The feature spec or design in
*http://review.gluster.org/#/q/project:glusterfs-specs
* project in gerrit
and its auto synced to https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs-specs/

The developer doc is inside GlusterFS source code repo ( *
https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/tree/master/doc/developer-guide
* ).

How many beta releases hit for each minor release ? and the gap between

 Hi,

In previous community meeting it was discussed to come up with a schedule
for glusterfs releases. It was discussed that each of the supported release
branches (3.5, 3.6 and 3.7) will make a new release every month.

The previous releases of them happened at below dates.

 glusterfs-3.5.5 - 9th July
 glusterfs-3.6.4 - 13th July
 glusterfs-3.7.3 - 29th July.

Is it ok to slightly align those dates? i.e. on 10th of every month 3.5
based release would happen (in general the oldest supported and most stable
release branch). On 20th of every month 3.6 based release would happen (In
general, the release branch which is being stabilized). And on 30th of
every month 3.7 based release would happen (in general, the latest release
 branch).

Please provide feedback. Once a schedule is finalized we can put that
 information in gluster.org.

Indeed , no feedback on QA releases happens between minor versions.
I do think , there is no point to keep alpha/beta releases between minor
versions , but we can do that for Major as Kaleb mentioned.

I am not sure about the beta releases. As per my understanding there are
no beta releases happening in release-3.5 branch and also the latest
release-3.7 branch. I was doing beta releases for release-3.6 branch.
But I am also thinking of moving away from it and make 3.6.5 directly
  (and also future release-3.6 releases).

We get zero feedback from alphas and betas. Nobody has complained about
 the lack of them.

IMO we should still to alpha and beta for x.y.0 releases though.

2015-07-23 Thread Humble Devassy Chirammal

This is still confising me a little. The presentations from the
Mediawiki instance have been put in the glusterdocs/presentations/
directory. If we should put them on the website instead, they should not
be part of glusterdocs. However, there is currently no page that I can
find on the website that lists the different presentations. The only
link that I can find is this one:

  http://gluster.readthedocs.org/en/latest/presentations/

Is that going to be replaced with an explanation (or pointer) on how to
get the presentation on the website?

Well, we are yet to finalize on it. If we can render it on website we will
do the same. Otherwise it will be a pointer from website.

quality, findability, and usefulness of its documentation. Our goal is to
increase community contribution, remove barriers that discourage
contribution and give you the help you need, when and where you need it. As
part of this strategy, we’ve just rolled out the revamped GlusterFS

2015-07-01 Thread Humble Devassy Chirammal
Yeah this followed by glusterd restart should help

But frankly, i was hoping that 'rm' the file isn't a neat way to fix this
 issue

Why is rm not a neat way? Is it because the container deployment tool
needs to
know about gluster internals? But isn't a Dockerfile dealing with details
of the service(s) that is being deployment in a container.

I do think fixing the dockerfile is *not* the correct way. That said, the
use case is not just
containers. This issue can pop up in Ovirt or virtualization environments
as well.
The VM template may have pre configured glusterd in it and the pool created
out of this template
can show the same behaviour.

I believe fixing it in gluster code base would be the right thing to do.

Thanks Atin for the heads up!

 AFAICT we have 2 scenarios:

 1) Non-container scenario, where the current behaviour of glusterd
persisting
the info in .info file makes sense

 2) Container scenario, where the same image gets used as the base, hence
all
 containers gets the same UUID
For this we can have an option to tell glusterd that instructs it to
refresh
 the UUID during next start.

Maybe somethign like presence of a file /var/lib/glusterd/refresh_uuid
 makes
glusterd refresh the UUID in .info
and then delete this file, that ways, Dockerfile can touch this file,
 post
gluster rpm install step and things should
  work as expected ?

If container deployment needs are different it should should address
 issues like
above. If we start addressing glusterd's configuration handling for every
new deployment technology it would quickly become unmaintainable.

[Gluster-devel] GlusterFS Documentation Improvements - An Update

2015-05-27 Thread Humble Devassy Chirammal
Hello all,

The GlusterFS documentation team is constantly working to improve the
quality, findability, and usefulness of its documentation. Our goal is to
increase community contribution, remove barriers that discourage
contribution and give you the help you need, when and where you need it. As
part of this strategy, we’ve just rolled out the revamped GlusterFS
Documentation: gluster.readthedocs.org

We started by curating content from various sources including gluster.org
static HTML documentation, various blog posts and the Community wiki. We
used readthedocs service to host the documentation and mkdocs to convert
the Markdown source files to HTML pages. We also put our thought into
classifying the documentation based on their content:

   - Quick Start Guide : A headstart guide for the beginners.

   - Installation Guide : Step by step instructions to install GlusterFS.

   - Administration Guide : Container for for all administrative actions.

   - Developer Guide : Container for all development related aspects.

   various versions.

   - GlusterFS Tools : Contains information about the tools used in
   GlusterFS.

   - Troubleshooting Guide : Container for basic troubleshooting and
   debugging guides.

   - Images : Container for images (in .jpg or .png format) that are
   present inline the documentation pages.

Doing so, we gain these benefits:

   - Version based browsable documentation

   - More targeted content

   - Less duplication

   - Faster updates

Whats changing for community members?

A very simplified contribution workflow.

- How to Contribute?

Contributing to the documentation requires a github account. To edit on
github, fork the repository (see top-right of the screen, under your
username). You will then be able to make changes easily. Once done, you can
create a pull request and get the changes reviewed and merged into the
official repository.
With this simplified workflow, the documentation is no longer maintained in
gluster/glusterfs/docs directory but it has a new elevated status in the
form of a new project: gluster/glusterdocs (
https://github.com/gluster/glusterdocs) and currently this project is being
maintained by Anjana Sriram, Shravan and Humble.

- What to Contribute

Really, anything that you think has value to the GlusterFS developer
community. While reading the docs you might find something incorrect or
outdated. Fix it! Or maybe you have an idea for a tutorial, or for a topic
that isn’t covered to your satisfaction. Create a new page and write it up!

Whats Next?

*Since the GlusterFS documentation has a new face-lift, MediaWiki will no
longer be editable but will only be READ ONLY view mode. Hence, all the
work-in-progress design notes which were maintained on MediaWiki will be
ported to the GitHub repository and placed in Feature Plans folder. So,
when you want to upload your work in progess documents you must do a pull
request after the changes are made. This outlines the change in workflow as
compared to MediaWiki.*

A proposal:

Another way to maintain work-in-progress documents in Google docs (or any
other colloborative editing tool) and link them as an index entry in
Feature Plans page on GitHub. This can be an excellent way to track a
document through multiple rounds of collaborative editing in real time.

Stay tuned for a more detailed information about the new contribution
workflow, which will be posted on the new documentation website (i.e.
gluster.readthedocs.org)

We love to hear your feedback on this. Any suggestions/comments regarding
this would help !

Re: [Gluster-devel] glusterfs package requires libgfdb.so

2015-04-06 Thread Humble Devassy Chirammal
Hi Satheesaran,

The libgfdb was moved to glusterfs-server package via
http://review.gluster.org/#/c/9983

As per commit, libgfdb is only used by processes that run on Gluster
servers. There is
no need to have this library (and its sqlite dependency) on any system
that installs a glusterfs package.

To install glusterfs-api(libgfapi) the dependency goes like this:

So, I was unable to install client-only-packages (without glusterfs-server

When you install glusterfs-fuse or libgfapi, it requires libgfdb.so and

glusterfs-server is the package that provides - libgfdb.so
You can't expect anyone to install glusterfs-server package on client-side.

I agree. We should install it by default.

Perhaps it should be in a separate RPM package?

I'd guess thought that the Debian and Ubuntu community would not want a

Indeed, and I have noticed that too. I remember being able to just
resubmit the failed regression tests, and the change would be rebased on
top of HEAD of the branch. To me, that also looks a safer way of going
things, (relatively) old patches can be tested easier that way.

I suspect that this change came with the triggered regression testing,
but I have not checked that. Do others have an opionion on with what
code the regression tests should be executed? Currently I am aware of
 two possible ways:

 a. checkout the HEAD of the branch and cherry-pick the change on top
 b. checkout the change (use the tree from the time the change was
posted)

 (b) seems to be the current way, my preference would go to (a).

 Please voice your opinions. Thanks,

Unsure. Perhaps a missing dependency on the slave VM? Just tested

 (at least it's consistent)

Looking at this failure on the NetBSD 6.x Rackspace VM, it fails in

it's for a different patch set... but it's an unusual co-incidence

Can you please provide your suggestions to resolve this issue.

   Hi,

Starting in 3.6 we have bumped the SO_VERSION of libgfapi.

You need to install glusterfs-api-devel-3.6.0... first and build vdsm.

But we are (or were) not planning to release glusterfs-3.6.0 on
 f19 and
   f20...

Off hand I don't believe there's anything in glusterfs-api-3.6.0 that
 vdsm
needs. vdsm with glusterfs-3.5.x on f19 and f20 should be okay.

Is there something new in vdsm-4-14 that really needs glusterfs-3.6?
 If so
we can revisit whether we release 3.6 to fedora 19 and 20.

The chain of dependencies is like this:

  vdsm - qemu - libgfapi.so.0

I think a rebuild of QEMU should be sufficient. I'm planning to put
glusterfs-3.6 and rebuilds of related packages in a Fedora COPR. This
would make it possible for Fedora users to move to 3.6 before they
   switch to Fedora 22.
AFAICT the only difference between libgfapi.so.0 and libgfapi.so.7 are
two added synbols (glfs_get_volfile, glfs_h_access) and __THROW on
functions. Wouldn't it be possible to provide a compatibilty
 libgfapi.so.0
  to ease migration?

That is possible, sure. I think that rebuilding related packages is just
easier, there are only a few needed. Users that would like to run 3.6
before it is made available with Fedora 22 need to add a repository for
the glusterfs-3.6 packages anyway, using the same repository to provide
 related packages is simple enough.

But, if there is a strong interest in having a -compat package, we can
discuss that during tomorrows (Wednesdays) meeting.

 Thanks,
 Niels

TEST days starting from next week. All the listed 3.6 feature's (
http://www.gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/Planning36) page
have to be updated to have a clear picture on what exactly the feature
provides, user experience..etc. The most important part is updating the
HOW TO TEST section in each feature page. Feature page and HOW TO TEST
section will be used heavily for testing the feature, so the component
owners are requested to spend some time and update this page, so that the
test days will be more productive.

This error mostly pop up when the metadata of actual file does not match
the one provided by the repo metdata files. so I believe createrepo fixed

Yup, I think there was some issue with repo metadata. I had recreated the
repo , after you reported the issue and that fixed it.

 Hi all,

we (sub-maintainers and component owners) will be trying to enforce
a more trackable status of the various bugs that we have and get
reported. In order to get everyone on one line, we will follow
a documented life-cycle for the bugs:
 -
 http://www.gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/Bug_report_life_cycle

The life-cycle will help developers and bug reporters understanding
where in the process a certain fix is. It makes it easier to find the
package versions that should solve the reported issues. With this, we
hope to get more verifications of fixes from the bug reporters and other
 community users.

With help from some scripts, I have been checking and correcting the
status of many bugs this evening. Now, most¹ bugs that have:

 1. patches posted, should be in POST
 2. have all their patches merged, should be in MODIFIED
 3. have patches merged and a beta release contains those, ON_QA
 4. where all patches have been included in a final release, CLOSED

So, don't be surprised to see many bug changes. This is intended and
should get us in a better position to really start a continued triaging
process for new bug reports. All details on how/when/who the triaging
will be done is not clear yet. Any volunteers that would like to be part
of the triaging and help with initial debugging and data gathering
should contact us (reply to this email on the list would work).

 Have a good weekend,
 Niels

¹ Bug 1091833 is the last one I checked today, continuing an other time.

need more than what is available there.

api/examples does contain a sample implementation in C. You can also look
 up that for reference.
