Thanks, Marko, but I'd gone there already; unless I'm missing it, the

Thanks, Zack. For me, Shift-Tab once then Down Arrow did the trick.

I thought of creating a filter that would archive messages that carry the
labels "XYZ" and "Muted", but don't see a way to do that. (In fact, I
don't see how to create any filter using a label as a criterium.)
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks, Zack; this did the trick.
Thanks also for your suggestion, Andy, but I already had "Don't override
filters" checked.

The way it says to move messages -- by dragging -- in the article that Zack
linked to, is the way I do it. As far as I can remember, if I've clicked
on "Yes" to say that I want all future messages from this sender to go into
the designated tab, then that's what happens.

but
1. Removing a label is more work than adding one;
2. I want the old conversations with new messages to appear in my Inbox.)
Any suggestions?

Mute is continuing to be my solution. I agree that it seems to have worked
sporadically in the past, but so far -- knock on wood -- it is behaving
correctly, and Muted conversations are staying out of the Inbox.

Just confirming that both Andy's and Marko's solutions work fine. I
normally have at least seven Gmail accounts open simultaneously. (BTW,
there is a limit to how many accounts you can have open at once, but I've
only hit it on one occasion. I think it's at least 12.)

Ooh, that's a useful reminder, Marko. If only it were possible to remove
only the paragraph formatting and not everything else as well (bold,
italic, colors ...).

Why not have both Gmail accounts on both tablets? Would that solve at
least part of the problem?
The Gmail app for Android allows me to have multiple accounts accessible on
my phone. I have my husband's in addition to my own (with his permission,
of course).
