Here is a localization issue in this message. Currently you breaks the subject and the verb in two separated translatable messages, rebuilding then at runtime following original English phrase; this could not work with some languages (or simply could force a suboptimal phrase). Suggestions? I suspect the best option is mark as translatable the full string with tags, in order to allow translators to put in the proper place the capplet name, hoping translators will use right tags ... nautilus-sendto branch for 3.2 is gnome-3-0, not master
Hi, it seems there was a little error on l10n.gnome.org. Basically l10n.g.o was targeting nautilus-sendto master branch for GNOME 3.2, while there is no planned new release of nautilus-sendto (from master, of course) and the proper branch is gnome-3-0. So, if you have to check or update your nautilus-sendto translation, please refer to gnome-3-0 branch, in the hope maintainers will made a new release. l10n.g.g was fixes and currently points to correct branch. Kelvin degrees in gcalctool
Checking gcalctool translation I've found a (huge) error: NC_(unit-symbols, degK,˚K)}, see http://git.gnome.org/browse/gcalctool/tree/src/unit-manager.c#n100 Kelvin scale is an absolute scale, and the unit is kelvin, not kelvin degree. Today I've no time and opportunity to prepare a patch and propose it, and maybe it's too late for a string/code freeze break. Should we postpone the fix to 3.0.1? Cheese string freeze break request
Hi, I'd like to request a string freeze break for cheese, in order to commit the patch available here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644917 Basically it seems that some mnemonics was removed from cheese menu entries, as well other entries are using wrong strings (for instance Help Content instead Content, or Save As without ..., or _Preferences instead Prefere_nces). From translators point of view it should be a simple task (restore some translations previously available or unfuzzy or add a couple of _). New power diplay in control center
Richard blogged [1] about new UI for power preferences in GNOME 3.0. It was a known change[2], but until now I didn't notice the labels. Put the computer to sleep when on: [x] AC power and inactive for: [ $TIME v] [x] Battery power and inactive for: [ $TIME v] Is this l10n/i18n friendly? At least in Italian language could be a couple of issues (minor, understandable by users, but sub-optimal). The golden rule was do not break phrases, any suggestion? Poor l10n/i18n for external deps on freedesktop.org
There are several [1][2][3][4] translations we (Italian GNOME team) did for freedesktop stuff useful or needed by GNOME, still pending. There are also some modules that should add i18n support (at least [5], others?). Should GNOME Translation Project start poking fd.o maintainer to take care of i18n/l10n? Note that we are speaking about major tasks, like authentication to unmount drives, or shut down the system when another user is logged in on other console. Also, we are speaking about developers that are GNOME developers too, they should know about the importance of l10n/i18n. Those labels _have_ to be translated running GNOME, or we'll provide a really dumb experience to uses. Any good idea to a) provide and commit translations ASAP for 2.28 release b) better l10n/i18n for freedestop.org stuff in future ? My suggestion, if applicable, is to fix the usage of Name key in desktop files from GNOME/Gtk+ apps and follow KDE approach, see [2]. Well, the GenericName (Name) default maybe is not the best :) For example, in French, it wouldn't be Name + GenericName (ex: Rhythmbox Music Player) but GenericName + Name (ex: Lecteur de musique Rhythmbox), and that rule (afaik) would work in all cases. Would such a simple rule exist for all languages? In Italian language the rule is `GenericName Name`, but as translation team we allowed to use `Name - GenericaName`. Yup. This feature included changes in GIO, GVfs and Nautilus. Also note
that the terminology in Palimpsest is different since the target
audience for Palimpsest (intermediate to expert) differs from that of
Nautilus (novice users). For example, we use the term Detach instead
of Safely remove.

I still have a doubt: as the one that worked hard to implement this

The Tracker team is going to publish a new release next week (it was planned for previous, but there are some major bugs to fix). Anybody knows if translation updates for network-manager-* modules should be performed only in master branch, or in NETWORKMANAGER_0_7 branch too? In past days I've seen some commits from mainteiners copying po from master to 0.7 branch, and I don't know if this is a task they reserve for themself. PS any news about NetworkManager itself? Evolution in Italian - Problems due %k time formatter
We (me and Milo) have exploited an issue in Italian translation of evolution-data-server 2.26 (in jaunty). The visible problem is the inability to set a time and save an appointment in Evolution. This come from a change I did to time formatters for hours. Previously there ware %k, I changed to %-H 'cause the first is not standard for stfrtime(3) (see [1]) Now ,we planned to revert the change immediately after the GIT switch, but 1- why it fails? 2- any other team using %k ? 3- should I open a bug against e-d-s to use as knowledge base ? Barriers for i18n/l10n in approved external depencedies
I was investigating the current status of Italian translations for some external deps of GNOME, mostly stuff hosted on freedesktop.org I found that some crucial stuff for GNOME (avahi, pulseaudio, shared-mime-info, but also packagekit) is using Fedora Trasifex[1] to manage transations. This also mean that you should be a Fedora Community member[2] in order to translate that shaded (i.e. cross-distro and cross-desktop) moduled. Note that Fedora Community asks you a SSH key, a GPG key, the signing of a Contributors License Agreement, your telephon number and postal address. Can we, the GNOME Translation Project, try to lobby freedesktop.org asking to provide a proper infrastructure for translations of shared stuff (mostly hosted on freedesktop itself)? *fetch* refreshed webkitgtk PO files (and POT file to start a new

updated PO files.
Unless you create a fake webkitgtk module on {svn,git}.gnome.org,
used only to trac PO files (committers will put updated PO files here,
webkitgtk developers will grab PO file before relases).

In the last period most of the commits (or at least a big part) have been done by Luca, but now we are facing a (big) problem: Luca is without computer (dead broken) for an undefined period of time. This leaves us with nobody with commit rights: I have to assume this since the coordinator is not responding. I raised this problem even inside our mailing list, but I had no answer. Any help or advice you have or would like to share is welcome. Thank you. A little update on my status. I've a limited access to Internet on a Linux machine, so I'm able to perform some commits, but of course I can't use it daily. Milo is continuing updating me about needs and developments of this unfortunate situation. Today I've committed files that was ready; I poked Italian translators to use l10n.gnome.org and upload ASAP their own stuff, but I'll be very thankful to Og Maciel if he would like to help us in committing phase. In gnome-session schema file there is a string that we forgot to fix: List of components that are required as part of the session. (Each element names a key under /desktop/gnome/session/required-components.) The Session Preferences will not normally allow users to remove a required component from the session, and the session manager will automatically add the required components back to the session if they do get removed. Example: http://l10n.gnome.org/users/Deindre/ Flavia claimed her translations this morning (Jan 08, 2009) but the webpage reports Dec 30, 2008. A similar issue occurred to me working on alarcate. As you can see here[1] the last action (committed) is dated 2009-01-06 14:09, but the state label on top reports 2009-01-01 10:37 p.m. About this topic, may I also propose two enhancements? * add the ability to localize dates/times and/or allow them to be user configurable. If you access to page [1] using en as browser language, you have: state date using English (WW DD MM YY HH:MM AM/PM) format; POT file update date using UTC, actions dates using local times. IMHO those dates/times should all use the same format, specified in damned-lies PO or chosen by single user. * add the ability to sort summaries (users and releases) by dates. Example: go to Italian summary for GNOME 2.26 release[2] (note by now we are just experimenting/testing with new l10n.g.o, only few modules have a state). Modules are listed in alphabetical order. From a coordinator point of view, could be good sort them by state-date, in order to check and poke people that claimed a translation for a long time and never uploaded it. Cheers, Luca. String change in gnome-session
