Re: [GNC] Issues Retrieving Quotes with v5.0

2023-03-27 Thread R Losey
David, thank you.

I did this on my iMac; it ran a LONG time with LOTS of output, and
installed the development tools, but finally finished. Even though I'm a
software engineer, it was kind of scary.

But the "Get Quotes" is still greyed out, even though I ran the
gnc-fq-update...

When I attempt the gnucash-cli command, it fails, stating that
Finance::Quote is missingcthe JSON::Parse module

[GNC] Incorrect Link To Documentation On Website

2023-03-27 Thread Tyler Cooper via gnucash-user
Hi All -

I was on https://code.gnucash.org/website and it looks like the PDF
links to the v5 help manual are broken.  They link to
https://code.gnucash.org/website/docs/v5/C/gnucash-help.pdf and it looks
like it's supposed to be
https://code.gnucash.org/website/docs/v5/C/gnucash-manual.pdf.

[GNC] Uninstalled 5.0, went to 4.14 gladly

2023-03-27 Thread Steve Miller
Installed 5.0 from 4.13 on Windows. Description field kept freezing.
Couldn't download prices, told me I had an invalid install but when I went
and did the checks, said I was fine. Wouldn't work. Has always worked for
years.

Uninstalled 5.0 and 4.14 works perfectly. Not worth the headache, remind
me next year and I'll maybe give it another whirl...

For documentation purposes, here's a strange thing I see now (maybe the
same thing others are seeing). You can use the remote-ls command to list
"everything," however, when you isolate GnuCash, you might see something
different.

Note the apparent version and commit of the remote-ls differs from the

I have not yet run the flatpak update -- here's what it looks like when I
run it "verbosely." Note I still do not know if I'll be getting GnuCash

[GNC] Accelerator keys missing in V5.0

2023-03-27 Thread jbonnett
Hi All,

I have just installed V5.0 and it seems great. Congratulations to all those
who contributed!

I just noticed something not working as before. It is some accelerator keys
that I defined.

I am running Gnucash V5.0 on Windows 10 and I had some extra accelerator
keys defined for the View menu. I changed things in the accelerator-map
file(s) under my user folder. The two files I changed are:

.gnucash\accelerator-map

AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\accelerator-map

These are the lines I changed:

(gtk_accel_path
"/GncPluginPageRegisterActions/ViewStyleBasicAction" "1")

(gtk_accel_path
"/GncPluginPageRegisterActions/ViewStyleAutoSplitAction"
"2")

(gtk_accel_path
"/GncPluginPageRegisterActions/ViewStyleJournalAction"
"3")

(gtk_accel_path
"/GncPluginPageRegisterActions/ViewStyleDoubleLineAction"
"4")

That 4th one for double line mode still works, perhaps it is defined
elsewhere, but the others, although the above files still exist, and seem to
be unchanged, do not behave as before.

I guess the configuration of this may have changed in the latest version.
Where should I be looking for this?

Best Regards,

John Bonnett

Subject: [GNC] Issues Retrieving Quotes with v5.0

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a few pointers on how to troubleshoot an issue I'm having
with v5 downloading quotes. I had no issues with v4.13. When I select
"Tools|Price Database|GetQuotes" a shell opens and closes quickly and
nothing is updated.

I don't seem to have any issues with gnucash-cli. Here are the results:
---
C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin>gnucash-cli.exe --verbose -Q dump
yahoo_json acn
acn:
 isodate => 2023-03-27
 low => 270.64
type => EQUITY
name => acn (Accenture plc)
  pe => 25.180145
exchange => Sourced from Yahoo Finance (as JSON)
 eps => 10.88
currency => USD
  method => yahoo_json
 success => 1
  volume => 2805531
   close => 272
date => 03/27/2023
  year_range =>242.8 - 345.3
last => 273.96
open => 270.73
   div_yield => 1.5919117
  symbol => acn
high => 274.36
---

Running gnucash with the "--log gnc.scm=debug" shows the following error:

* 15:11:29 ERROR  [gnc_prices_dialog_get_quotes_clicked()] Price
retrieval failed: Failed to parse result returned by Finance::Quote.
Error message:
(1): expected value

To me, it's odd that gnucash-cli.exe seems to work where the gnucash app
itself does not.

I have Finance::Quote: 1.54 installed and it shows this in Help | About

Lastly, if I check the security editor, it seems like every quote provider
is greyed out. This woudl suggest to me that gnucash doesn't think there
is a valid Finance::Quote configured.

I'd appreciate any pointers on how to dig deeper and determine what broke
for me between 4.13 and 5.0. Is anyone else having issues?

I'm enjoying v5 quite a bit - congrats on the release.

[GNC] Balance Forecast V5.0

2023-03-27 Thread Tom Veik

Many thanks to the development team for your hard work on GnuCash.

I installed V5.0 and am having trouble getting the Balance Forecast
report to work.  Do I need to do something with (use-modules

Reports - Assets & Liabilities - Balance Forecast

Windows 11

I get an error message:

Re: [GNC] GnuCash 5.0 Released

2023-03-27 Thread Tim Rohrer
I’ve been working over the past few months on a Python app to help users
migrate from Quicken Mac, which will only export csv files. I’m using Piecash
for writing the database.

As I look through this list of note/features, I’m not seeing anything that
changes the the book’s sql file structure.

Am I missing anything?

Thank you for your work! I look forward to downloading and experimenting.

[GNC] Error message when opening file in 5.0

2023-03-27 Thread figures...@outlook.com
I have been using Gnucash for many years now, latest version 4.14
I successfully installed version 5.0 but when I attempt to open my main account
file I get the error message “User specified a ‘book currency’; cost of other
currencies/commodities tracked in terms of book-currency (requires at least
Gnucash 2.7.0)”
As I said, I am currently using version 4.14 with no issues. I admit the
account file I am using dates back many years, but I have been updating Gnucash
regularly over the years.
Is there a way to isolate and eliminate this error message?
Thanks very much for an excellent program.

Re: [GNC] Issues Retrieving Quotes with v5.0

2023-03-27 Thread David H
Michael,

Is your "Get Quotes" button in Gnucash also greyed out? I had to run
gnc-fq-update in /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/bin in the
terminal on macOS and let it update and then start Gnucash before the
button became active. Same in windows 11 pro - open a command prompt as
Administrator and use the command perl "C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin\gnc-fq-update" - you need the double quotes around the
path because of the space in the path. After I did this it all seemed ok.

Hope this helps,

Cheers David H.

I've been playing around with the flatpak history command and noticed that
my "update to the same version" update to GnuCash was offered soon after an
update to the flatpak runtime. So my current theory is that all the
applications in the flatpak flathub repository got recompiled for an update
to a new runtime.

The flatpak history command gives you quite a bit of information, including
the old and new commit IDs, HOWEVER I haven't yet discovered how to
correlate the commit IDs visible in the history command to whatever is
available in flathub. All I know is what got updated based on what happened
on MY machines. I presume there's a way to examine the repository, and
maybe even a history of when things get recompiled.

[GNC] Issues Retrieving Quotes with v5.0

2023-03-27 Thread Fross, Michael
Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a few pointers on how to troubleshoot an issue I'm having
with v5 downloading quotes. I had no issues with v4.13. When I select
"Tools|Price Database|GetQuotes" a shell opens and closes quickly and
nothing is updated.

I don't seem to have any issues with gnucash-cli. Here are the results:
---
C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin>gnucash-cli.exe --verbose -Q dump
yahoo_json acn
acn:
 isodate => 2023-03-27
 low => 270.64
type => EQUITY
name => acn (Accenture plc)
  pe => 25.180145
exchange => Sourced from Yahoo Finance (as JSON)
 eps => 10.88
currency => USD
  method => yahoo_json
 success => 1
  volume => 2805531
   close => 272
date => 03/27/2023
  year_range =>242.8 - 345.3
last => 273.96
open => 270.73
   div_yield => 1.5919117
  symbol => acn
high => 274.36
---

Running gnucash with the "--log gnc.scm=debug" shows the following error:

* 15:11:29 ERROR  [gnc_prices_dialog_get_quotes_clicked()] Price
retrieval failed: Failed to parse result returned by Finance::Quote.

This woudl suggest to me that gnucash doesn't think there
is a valid Finance::Quote configured.

I'd appreciate any pointers on how to dig deeper and determine what broke
for me between 4.13 and 5.0. Is anyone else having issues?

I'm enjoying v5 quite a bit - congrats on the release.

You can download V% from Github (https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/tree/5.0)
until it comes up on Sourceforge or the GnuCash website. Select version 5 in the
tags (top left) if it doesn't load with v% selected and when it has loaded
select the Download ZIP option in the dropdown menu of the green code button
(top right).

I don't see version 5. That might not be a stable release if it exists, so I
don't know what you should do about that.

But I know what you should do - trim posts when replying to a digest. You

Same place as last version.

And QFXDirectConnect seems to be in the same place: Actions>Online Actions>Get

But I can’t test that anymore since my banks have bailed on directconnect

Re: [GNC] GnuCash 5.0 Released

2023-03-27 Thread Peter West via gnucash-user
I have just noticed that the hash given in the release email for
Gnucash-Intel-5.0-2.dmg
is the correct hash for
Gnucash-Intel-5.0-1.dmg
which is the version which downloads from the first download link for Apple
MacOS in the release email. The has I used was the one given for
Gnucash-Intel-5.0-1.dmg
on the SourceForge page.

Hence my confusion.

Re: [GNC] Should I upgrade or update?

2023-03-27 Thread Dennis West
I heartily recommend the 5.0 update.  I am, I confess, a low demand user
as I use it as a checkbook for non-business use and manage my
investments elsewhere.  I normally wait a little longer to update out of
an abundance of caution but decided to go for it now.  The drop down
list for entering transactions makes the update worth it all by itself.
The update has been totally glitch free so far.

Thanks so much to all involved!

I would recommend v5.0 as it's now stable. I've been running the betas and
now 5.0 on my Windows 10 machine. If by chance you do encounter a bug, it
would help the team by reporting it and you can easily just install 4.14 if
needed.

I am predominately on Windows 11 platform but I am NOT a business user.

Can both versions co-exist so that differences in fundamentals, should there
be, can be bubbled up?

Keeping books for organizations I was always exporting and editing. Keep in
mind that the SAME (logical) report would be wanted in different levels of
detail for different purposes. Almost always one format/level of
detail/grouping for the Board of Directors and another for tax purposes.

For example, the BoD might want to see just the total cost of an event.
But the treasurer needs "printing and postage" separated out form other
costs because a 990/990EZ line item. The BoD might just want to see the
total cost to the organizations of all interns but the treasurer needs to
see each separately and those each split between "pay" and "mileage
reimbursement" (to fill out possible 1099-MISC) and similarly maybe the
total of "orchard mowing costs" for the BoD but how much to any neighboring
farmers paid again to see if a 1099 needed.

Besides, having it outside of gnucash and under the control of and editor
makes it easy to add annotations to explain anything unusual.

Patience. This weekend's release is a double, both 4.13 and 5.0. Since I
haven't yet figured out how to do six things at once and anyway have to
manipulate several git repositories in the right order, it's taking time and
some things like flathub are getting pushed ahead of the announcements.

Tommy Trussell reported a similar strange update prompt on Ubuntu 22.04 a
couple of weeks ago with a very tardy prompt to update to 4.13, which he
already had. I guess that's not a very reliable tool.

Thanks for responding. I didn‘t mean to apply any pressure, I just thought it
appropriate to report something which might indicate an oversight in the
packaging of the Flatpak release. I have been perfectly happy with 4.13+ (and
many previous releases) and am not in a hurry to upgrade. Many thanks for your
dedication to GnuCash!

Re: [GNC] GnuCash 5.0 Released

2023-03-27 Thread Glenn Fowler
Thanks to everyone for the hard work getting 5.0 released!!

I have noticed that the GTK settings file no longer exists: GTK_CONFIG_HOME

/settings.ini

On version 4.x, I had added gtk-primary-button-warps-slider=false in that
file to change the scrollbar behavior to only scroll one page up/down when
clicked above or below the scrollbar per the wiki which is still there:
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GTK3

Adding a settings.ini file now does nothing. Does anyone know the new
method for v5.0?

It's interesting you say that. Many years ago I wrote some finite
difference code

https://atlc.sourceforge.net/

Once a publisher asked me if they could include a copy of the code on a CD
with a book they were going to publish on modelling of electromagnetic
systems. My reply was "sure, it's released under the GPL, just use it". But
that did not satisfy them. *They wanted it confirmed in writing that they
could use the code.* I could hardly be bothered to send a letter to them,
but agreed with them that I would write a letter if they would send me a
copy of the book when it was published. They agreed to that, so I confirmed
in writing that they could include this GPL code with the book.

It struck me as very weird, but at least I got a decent hardback textbook
out of it. 

Re: [GNC] Reporting Woes - Newbie incompetence

2023-03-27 Thread Peter Cuthbert via gnucash-user

 Hi Brook

You are correct in that reports are in html. However, all you have to do
is highlight the whole report with the mouse. With that done do a
Control and C copy. Next open your spread sheet and paste.

Alternatively save the report, then open it with your spreadsheet. You
will likely get asked about the document layout - it is Tab delimited.
Having chosen that the file shoul load. You can then save it in the
native format of the spreadsheet.

 Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but how do you copy/paste the
result into a spreadsheet.

 My understanding is that the reports are HTML documents.  Perhaps
there is some magic I am not aware of?

 Most spreadsheet programs will open HTML files. Apache OpenOffice,
LibraOffive, and Excel I know will.
