That would be some good info for the FAQ on upgrading if you have the

If not, maybe someone else here can.

The solution I described on 4 August -- opening 4.14 for the first time,

When I moved files to my real PCs( desktop and laptop), I exported

and imported them to desktop real machine, _then_ installed 4.14.
Everything opened without a problem. I then repeated the process --
import files and Registry settings -- on my laptop, and again everything
opened properly.

Re: [GNC] Accounting period on a per-file basis?

2023-08-06 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

To Michael's point, setting specific dates, that's not as convenient,
but maybe saving one report with two sets of options will reduce the
amount of date selection I have to do, even if it doesn't reduce it to
zero.

Perhaps lack of clarity what is meant by "saved report"

Thus for any entity, I would (at least) be running a "Statement of
Revenues and Expenses" (the business world would call P) and a balance
sheet quarterly). I would be SAVING these by exporting from gnucash into
the "financial reports" folder of the organization using a file name
incorporating the Julian date (the effective date as opposed to real
time date when run. All that I would have SAVED of the report in gnucash
would be the display preferences, accounts excluded if any, etc.. I
would expect to EACH TIME enter the effective dates of the run. I would
find things like "current year", "current quarter", etc. not terribly
useful as what those mean would depend on the real time date when the
report was run.

Understand? Am I running the year end reports the night of Jan 31st?
Probably not. Probably not until a few days into the next year. But
maybe, depending on how New Years fell, I would be running before the
end of the year (say the 31st was a Monday -- well the 30th would not be
a "business day" and the 29th the last day for external transactions ).
In other words, the meaning of "current year, current quarter, etc. is
unclear. Explicit dates are clear.

Re: [GNC] finance Quote Not working

2023-08-06 Thread David H
On windows you'll need the double quotes around the .exe path because of
the space in "Program Files"

i.e. "C:\Program Files\GnuCash\gnucash-cli.exe" -V --quotes dump nseindia
RELIANCE

OR

you can also open a command prompt and change directory to C:\Program
Files\GnuCash end then just run the command without the full path name i.e.
gnucash-cli.exe -V --quotes dump nseindia RELIANCE

Cheers David H.

I run command from as an administrator,  the same message received as
below.

gnucash-cli' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

This message indicates a problem not with GnuCash or Perl, but of
learning how to use the command prompt. The message says that Windows
cannot find a file named "gnucash-cli" in the current directory. You fix
the problem by using the full path and exact filename for the GnuCash
command.

Use File Explorer to find the directory where GnuCash is installed, and
a file named something like "gnucash-cli.exe" in that directory. Note
the full file path to that directory.

Suppose that path is:

C:\Program Files\GnuCash\gnucash-cli.exe

(I don't use GnuCash on Windows, so I am not sure what the exact path
and file name are.)

Then in place of "gnucash-cli", use that full path and file name. For
instance:

C:\Program Files\GnuCash\gnucash-cli.exe -V --quotes dump nseindia RELIANCE

That should give you the output similar to my example. If you get the
same error message as before, then there is probably something wrong in
the path or the file name.

Learning more about using the Windows command prompt is a separate task,
and one that will probably help you for more things than just GnuCash.
According to a brief web search, here are a couple of pages that explain
the Windows Command Prompt:

Teaching details about the Windows command prompt is out of the scope of
this list. A Windows support group would be a better place to learn
about it.

On that same Preferences » General screen there's a setting for how
often GC should autosave. I think the default is every 5 minutes.
I've set it to 10, which reduces the clutter by 50% without much
increasing the risk, in my judgment.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never once needed to look at a log
file or autosave file, in almost six years of using GC. The bad news is,
I have no practice in looking at them, so if ever I need to I won't
exactly be hitting the ground running.

I use GC almost every day. I keep the retention period short, at 3 days.
Since I use GC almost every day, I figure any problem would show up
while I still had backup files available. And there's also my own weekly
backups of my whole disk.

When I moved files to my real PCs( desktop and laptop), I exported

Thanks, Adrien. I didn't really expect there to be a way, but I'd have

To Michael's point, setting specific dates, that's not as convenient,

when a saved report configuration that selected all of the accounts in
one book is run on another book that has completely different accounts.
But I'll be finding out shortly.)

My workload's already less than it was, because I no longer have to fire
up a VM to do the nonprofit's bookkeeping. (Plus, the books open and
save much faster, and reports come up faster.) While I was at GC 2.6.19,
it was at GC 4.13; now both are at GC 4.14. And when 5.4 comes out
they'll both be at 5.4.

Re: [GNC] Placement of autosaves and log files

2023-08-06 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I agree an option would be best with sub-folders as what I'd call a
'sane default'.

As for the OPs files, I suspect the search wasn't required, but maybe
seemed to be useful for a directory with *lots* of files. (It also might
be a case of familiarity with search and limited familiarity with
sorting and arranging views in File Explorer to quickly find things)

As for the lock file, to me it seems most useful if it's in the same

Yes, exactly! :-)

I use GnuCash as treasurer of a PCC (Parochial Church Council). I
have a sub-directory on my system called (very originally!) pcc and
that has a further sub-directory for each year. So, in the ~/pcc/2023
directory I have the GnuCash database file, and various other items
like correspondence, the odd PDF file from the diocese and so on.
Having all the GnuCash log files and such cluttering up the directory
is a nuisance.

The lock file message occurs when there is a lock file (.lck) on the
last used file.

Lock files are created when GnuCash opens a file and they are deleted
when GnuCash cleanly exits.

Thus, the presence of a lock file means one of two things:

1. The file is indeed open already. (maybe the app is minimized, or
maybe the window for it is on an external monitor)

2. GnuCash did not cleanly shut down the last time it was used and the
lock file remained.

Only if you know for a fact that you are dealing with case #2 is it okay
to proceed with "open anyway".

From time to time, seemingly randomly, it opens the (presumably
last used) file and away I go.

I don't think I've ever seen GnuCash continue to do anything unless I've
chosen an option from the lockscreen warning. If you are observing
different behavior, I'd call that a bug.

I am always careful.

Apparently not if you 'presume' the file that gets opened is the last
used one without making sure. (the file name is in the window title bar)
And by the names and counts of the files you've provided so far, it
indeed wasn't the last used file, but a backup. And this has happened
many times.

But no matter. While you weren't very clear, It appears you are opening
the app via an app shortcut, and NOT double-clicking the data file. If
you instead double-click the file, please advise.

Let's move on to cleaning this up. It looks like you started yet another
thread (not sure why) with a screenshot showing a File Explorer list,
but it didn't come through. If you can get that screenshot to upload
(JPG, BMP should work) and we can see the full file list with modified
and created dates, we can help you sort the mess.

Joost,

My Friday post included a link to the bug report. You can comment there if you
have anything useful to add. "Me too" isn't useful. Ability to dig into
MariaDB's behavior to figure out what's going on and explaining it would be.

At this point we don't know if support for MariaDB 11 is even possible: One of
the participants in the bug report used the latest version of MariaDB connector
and it still tells libdi that numbers are strings so libdbi is unable to use
query results.

Re: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

2023-08-06 Thread Brenda Leudke
Hi David:

Thx for the reply.

The qif file is not coming from a financial institution. It is being created
from a 3rd party software. I was trying to determine if the file was created
incorrectly or if gnucash wasn’t reading it properly. That’s why I was editing
the file to see if I could “fix” the qif file to work right in gnucash.

Thank u for the link though because it helped me figure out the qif contents. I
made some changes to the pluses and minuses in the file and was able to get the
file to work right in gnucash.

So I have contacted the support person for this 3rd party software to let him
know that it appears to me that the qif file he is creating is not right.

Thx again for your help. It did point me in the right direction to resolve
this. I will wait for a reply from the guy who creates the qif file.

Brenda,

It appears that you are editing the QIF file incorrectly. It should not need
to be edited at all if it is coming from a financial institution. I have not
used that format for income accounts so I cannot tell you exactly what is wrong
in your case but I think that one side should be appearing in an income
account, and the other side in a bank account. If you go to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicken_Interchange_Format you will see some
examples of how the format is used, but I think that it is not 100% correct.
Try to find a more authoritative source for exact usage.

Also, I see that you are in a jurisdiction that has HST, which we do not have
in the US. Others in this maillist may be able to better guide you.

Also, as a temporary work around, keep in mind that "accounting period"

accounting period by assigning specific effective dates to reports, etc.
In other words, if you like being able to reference relative to current

date specification for the non-profit. Since at one time I was keeping

[GNC] finance Quote Not working

2023-08-06 Thread Paras Desai

Hello Jim,

Thanks for your suggestion and efforts to test finance quote  for me !

I tried to run the command prompt, and I received the following message.

I run command from as an administrator,  the same message received as below.

gnucash-cli' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I also tried to use Perl Command Line but without success, the same
message as above was diplayed.

I am not sure, If I am making any mistake, in running command line !!

With regards

Paras

[GNC] gnucash complaining about libdbi version

2023-08-06 Thread Joost van Hooren
Dear GnuCash community,

for years I've been happily using GnuCash on Windows, storing my data in
mariadb. Unfortunately it now started complaining about the version of
libdbi and I can't use my data anymore. I didn't change anything and even
tried upgrading from 4.13 to 5.3, but to no avail. Removed the program and
reinstalled, but alas. Nothing seems to fix the issue. Can someone help?

The error:
The library "libdbi" installed on your system doesn't correctly store large
numbers. This means GnuCash cannot use SQL databases correctly. Gnucash
will not open or save to SQL databases until this is fixed by installing a
different version of "libdbi". Please see
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=611936 for more information.

Thank you!
