Just a quick idea:
Perhaps you can do a sort on the known string of memo text. Next, as you edit &
change categories, also edit the text (perhaps add a star or something in the
middle) The search should drop that item then

You can also look in the unassigned category. As you change fields from
unassigned to another category, they will drop out of unassigned.

Re: [GNC] find and replace

2021-01-30 Thread Geoff

Hi Gord

You could also try exporting all the transactions from GnuCash to CSV,
correcting the CSV file, and importing to a new GnuCash database.

I did a similar exercise recently to split an enterprise into two - a
38,000 line CSV file imported without any problems (once I remembered to
tick the "Multi-split" option, see attached).

Good luck.

No, there is no way to en-masse manipulate multiple transactions. The
ONLY en-masse thing you can do is reassign all transaction from one
account to another account. For example, you could move ALL transactions
from "Imbalance-USD" into, e.g. Expenses:Groceries, by deleting the
Imbalance-USD account and telling GnuCash to target. But if you're
looking to reassign a subset of transactions, then no, there is no way to
do that.

Let me explain. I'm new to GnuCash and have just imported my Quicken data
QIF file but it appears that some transactions within splits have no
transfer account assigned. It appears that I did not have a category
assigned to them in Quicken. However, most seem to have the same memo
text.
There are really too many to do manually so some sort of find/replace
would
be helpful. If it's not possible within GnuCash, can the XML file be
edited
directly?

Sounds like you might be better off starting over and re-importing the
QIF. Fix the QIF file to assign a proper account target (or better yet,
map the Memo to the correct account during the QIF import).

2018-04-13 Thread cicko
If you do decide to go down that route, it would probably be much easier to
save the file as an SQLite database (or a few other SQL options) and then
modify the data using SQL.
Note the disclaimer about making backups, being responsible for any damaga,
yada, yada.
However, if you are comfortable with SQL, modifying destination account Ids
in splits should not be such a big deal unless they also include different
currencies and you're using trading accounts, etc. It can get complex fairly
quickly.

Re: [GNC] find AND REPLACE?

2018-04-12 Thread D
To be more specific about item 2, Gnucash uses a random 32 character string to
store account information in transactions, rather than an account name. This,
of course, means that you can rename an account without breaking all the
transactions that have used that account previously. The downside is that you
can't simply read a transaction in the stored XML and ascertain which
transactions are using a given account.

That being said, if you were to determine the proper codes involved, a simple
find and replace of the codes in the text file will change the references. As
David C noted, though, if you break it somehow, you're on your own. Note that
by default, Gnucash compressed your XML file, and that you have to expand it
before it is readable in a text editor. There are explanations about this on
the wiki, I believe.

Oh, and should you choose to go this route, a backup taken before you mess with
the file might be prudent.

Re: [GNC] find AND REPLACE?

2018-04-12 Thread Glenn Bordonada via gnucash-user
Pardon a naive question from a newbie.
I noted that I can save my .gnucash file into .xml file which I can edit with a
text editor or write text processing programs to extract the data in various
ways.
Can anybody tell me what are the pros and cons for such a change?
Regards,Glenn

is, you could use a text editor ('vi' if you're on Linux) to do a global

utility to create a text SQL file and, likewise, use a text editor. Then
rebuild your GnuCash file from the edited SQL dump file.

[GNC] find AND REPLACE?

2018-04-11 Thread Paul Costan
I am looking for the command(s) or work-around to accomplish what I used
to use in Quicken as Find and Replace.  Specifically, after downloading
multiple months of transactions from my credit union into a simple
checkbook ledger, I could use the Quicken "find" to select all
transactions with description "Safeway" and then select from them to
"replace" the category to "Groceries". I'm good in Gnucash up through
the Find part, can't figure out how to easily set the Account without a
lot of keystrokes. Didn't see anything in the manual/help/faq.
Suggestions? Thanks.
