I’ve discovered my problem, and it’s not with GNUstep, nor the
documentation, but with the Linux desktop. After trying several versions of
Ubuntu (I’m using https://github.com/plaurent/gnustep-build to install
GNUstep) I’ve found that only the vanilla version of Ubuntu desktop with
Gnome works with

We are most certainly still active. The website was shifted over because
we lost our hosting since the person who maintained it passed away, so we
are in a bit of a transition. Once the website is back on it's feet,
those tutorials should be updated.
