[Goanet] GOAN CULTURE: Diaspora Goans

2003-06-16 Thread Gabe Menezes

Unfortunately, Presidents of many expat Goan organizations, who should
have provided a leadership role in encouraging their members to maintain
their native culture, have made Goan social and cultural events a party
place. Here the pride of place is scotch, food and leisure. The
office bearers have followed rather than led their groups. And when one
follows the crowd, one caters to the lowest common denominator.

Most thoughtful Goans complain about these associations as being
indifferent to things Goan including the language, culture, traditions
and customs. One of course can also argue that the thinkers in the
Goan community have just elected to withdraw and be reserved, aloof,
snobbish or 'cumprumento' rather than be assertive (but polite) for a
cause they believe in. Clearly a happy and sensible median must be found
for socialization as well as true cultural interactions. Or else why
call it a Goan event? or individuals come to it if there is no better
event in town! Goans, especially our ladies, should take the lead in
developing a cultural program for the adults and the children at these
events. This is an essential part of maintaining an ethos and a Goan
community. The usual saying is, All want to watch a good cultural
program. No one wants to take the lead and volunteer to put one on.

However when one volunteers, the President of the organizations should
seize the opportunity; rather than treat the association and the social
function as their private fiefdom. Many Goan events do not have a Master
of Ceremony. A president is usually a good planner and organizer, but
may be a poor MC. Goans who attend the social/cultural functions do so
out of pride and out of some degree of inconvenience to support a native
event. Hence get-togethers have to be punctual, tasteful,
well-programmed and organized to reflect Goan talent, skill, ingenuity
and traditions.

RESPONSE:

Thank you Sehnor Dottore,

I sincerely hope that the above paragraphs are read by the various GOA
Presidents. I enviasge there being no problem with keeping Goan taditions
among the GOA's of the Middle East countries. This is because most of the
Goans there are temporary migrant workers from Goa. More problematic, are
the well settled and in some cases second or third generation Goans in the
West.

The topic of having a good time was raised sometime ago by another writer
and a response from a Canadian Goan was that if merry making is not part of
the Goan psyche than what is?

This move to speak Konkani is admirable, in the Goan upper echelon in East
Africa from my recollection - my dad used to take me to the Goan Institute
Club, no one spoke Konkani, the lingua franca was English. At home Konkani
was spoken only if the parents did not want the children to understand what
was said. So the little Konkani my generation of people know is of the
forbidden language. The Goans that spoke konkani at home were usually the
homes of the tailors, carpenters and other tradesmen. We have come a full
circle now when people of my generation regret having missed out on a big
part of our heritage. I go to the Konani tiatres and can understand some,
when they start talking high konkani I am totally at sea. When I go to Goa
though, the taxi driver who knows me, has a jolly good laugh and I am able
to make myself understood, My wife at the ready for help (she speaks
fluently).

I am in agreement with you regarding the cultural side, saying that get
togethers have to be punctual (definitely not Goan) relefct Goan talent,
skill, ingenuity and traditions I am not so smart and would appreciate, as I
am sure the GOA organisations, on what you really intend us to do.
Previously you spoke of the President making a speech in Konkani. If this is
the case then by default we would loose the Presidents of the U.K. And
Canada GOAs straight away. Furthermore there are no other takers, so where
do we go. Easily said than done.

Yours sincerely,

Gabe Menezes

P.S My wife had to tell me who a travoti was - I thought it was an Italian
singer.!

FOUR SSC STUDENTS MOVE HC: Four SSC students have approached the Bombay
High Court at Goa praying that the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher

results immediately. The students argued that the decision of the Board to
keep their results reserved was arbitrary and illegal since they had not
violated any rules during the SSC examinations. (GT)

DOUBTS OVER GOA AS PERMANENT IFFI VENUE: The Annual International Film
Festival of India, which has until now remained a Caravan festival in
keeping with the policy of spreading cine literacy all over the country, is
to have a permanent home in the tourist seaside resort of Goa--a place
ideal for carnivals--but film buffs including film societies, feel it is
ill-suited for the purpose. (UNI report in NT)

OVER-ENTHUSIASTIC COPS SUSPENDED: Two police constables manning a police

Police sources informed, that the duo who were manning a police control
room van chased and manhandled a truck-driver, after the latter overtook

the mauling, the vehicle driver complained to a BJP minister about the
affair. The two were suspended last week and a departmental enquiry has

following the incessant rains during last 24 hours. A huge tree fell on the
house belonging to Mr Bruno Rodrigues of Santawaddo Betalbatim causing a
loss of around Rs 80,000. Two trees were uprooted at Dramapur and Sirlim in
South Goa. In Vasco, a coconut tree was uprooted and traffic was obstructed

section of the medical fraternity. The very relevance of this pill has come
under scrutiny, with doctors indicating that ECP was likely to promote
pre-marital sex. As part of the family planning programme, the Goa

the new ECP, which is to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. (H)

look at the civic hygiene maintained by the Canacona Municipal Council

suggests that the labourers are not the only culprits for the spread of the
disease. (H)

BUS ACCIDENT VICTIM SUCCUMBS: The number of dead persons in the accident to
the ill fated bus at Chicalim has gone up to 5. An injured passenger,

2003-06-16 Thread Bernado Colaco

From our great cities of Mapuçá was born Manuel
António Sousa who at a young age left for Mozambique
and later pursued a career as a military person in the
Portuguese army.

His military achievements led the Portuguese
government to bestow commendations on him. In 1960 the
last Portuguese governor of EIP, Gen. Vassalo e Silva
erected a statue on the outskirts of Mapuçá to honour
our Goan son.

Bharati troops arriving as pseudo liberators in 1961
destroyed this statue by bombing it, in what is to be
the beginning of the eradication of Goan history.

[Goanet] Ariosto... remembered in Muskaorem

2003-06-16 Thread Dommartin9
In order to be a good priest and be of service to God and ones fellowbeings,
one must first acquire and manifest the qualities of a realized being. Graduating
through the curriculum of philosophy and theology are mere technical tiers preceding
ordination. The greater challenge remains in graduating through the exercise of
exerting compassion without let or prejudice. Such graduation is without a semester
and demands a lifelong commitment.

Forty-one years ago, when I was in Ariostos class, he exuded that quality of
compassion. Four years later, when we were in the seminary together, nothing had
diminished in that arena. In 1968, when I visited the Salesian Novitiate in Yercaud,
Ariosto welcomed me with a compassionate hug, literally unaware that he was hugging a
loser. (Earlier that summer, I had been denied admission into the Salesian order and
while en route to joining the Benedictine monastery, I made an impromptu detour to
visit my former seminarians one last time before confining myself to a life of
solitude. Obviously, at the time, I had no reckoning that it wasnt proper protocol
for a persona non grata to show up uninvited and in so doing, risk subjecting the
psyche of the chosen ones to some damning influence!)

In retrospect, the Salesians did me right by showing me the door while consoling
me that God had much greater plans for me out there. It was a period in my life when
my unstable soul was so fixated on Heavens limited quota of saints, that at times I
could sense even God was beginning to feel discreetly uncomfortable. Eventually, I
got the message that I was specifically cut for the canvas and not for the cloth.

In the mid 70's, when I was deputed to attend Ariostos ordination on behalf of
Joe Rodrigues (a mutual great friend and former member of the Salesian order), Ariosto
mistook me for a priest -- dressed up as a Bohemian. And as he extended me his
compassion, I took it as a benign sign that he and I reached the divine threshold
within hours of each other, even though my arrival was via the material wastelands!
And in the late 70's, when Ariosto visited the Bom Jesus Basilica art gallery where my
paintings are on display, he took the time to recall with warmth our antiquated
acquaintance.

Today, a quarter century has slipped by since we last met. A current meeting,
however, is neither mandated nor exigent in order to reassess or re-validate
Ariostos compassionate predisposition. Some people change over time, others change
the times they live in, and Freds post reminds us that good deeds come from the
resources of goodwill and have a perpetual tendency to reincarnate in the wavelength

Some days back, work took me to this small hamlet of Muskaorem. Ram
Gaonkar (32) got talking about life in the village, how things had
changed, for both better and in some ways worse.

For this small hamlet in the village panchayat of Rivona, the growth of
education in recent years has been a big boon for the villagers. Ram
recalled, in particular, how Don Bosco's at nearby Sulcorna had brought
education to a place where they earlier had to walk some 12 kms for
schooling.

Then he mentioned Ariosto Coelho, who was one of the builders of the
Sulcorna school and allied institutions (they also have an agri-farm).

It was quite a coincidence to note that the person he was taking about has
been a long-time (if largely silent) Goanetter, and who's wife is an admin
of Goanet. Ram, who is a Velip from the region (an aboriginal community
that has long missed out on most of the fruits of 'development') recalled
how he had a problem with his nose, and Ariosto took him to distant Panjim
to get him cured.

Wonder if Ariosto recalls this guy. It's a small world, and electronic
communication is making it even smaller. FN

decides tomorrow that she has become insufferable and intolerable as a wife.
Will the husband loose his life time title of Shree Delhi upon divorce?

Could you please re-draft your letter to the President of India after
considering these aspects.

Sincerely,

RR

You are aware that two young girls shook the nation by
 their bold and courageous act recently;

NISHA SHARMA in New Delhi and later
 VIDYA BALASUBRAMANIAM in Mumbai.
