[Goanet] 359th birth annivesary of one of Goa's greatest sons

2010-04-21 Thread George Pinto
From the JOSEPH NAIK VAZ INSTITUTE
Berkeley, California

April 21, 2010 is the 359th birth anniversary of one of Goa's greatest sons.

Please share this message with your children and grandchildren as they honor
their Goan roots and take pride in Goan achievements. Please also forward this
message to your family and friends.

BLESSED JOSEPH VAZ was made Patron of the Archdiocese of Goa, Daman, on Jan 16,
2000. He died 299 years ago on Jan 16, 1711. Little is known about our own
Indian-born saints with the emphasis typically on European saints who came to
Goans through colonial history. Please request your church leaders to honor
great Goans like Blessed Vaz and Venerable Fr. Agnelo and make them saints.

Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the Beatification I came to Sri Lanka
above all to honor Blessed Joseph Vaz. Like a star shining in the Asian sky,
this great spiritual guide teaches us many lessons about the goodness of the
human person and the nobility of our destiny as human
beings. January 21, 1995

Life of Blessed Joseph Vaz
Apostle of Kanara and Sri Lanka (1651-1711)

1651 Born in Benaulim, Goa, India, on April 21.

1676 Is ordained a priest. Shortly after, volunteers to go to Sri Lanka where
the Dutch were persecuting Catholics and had banned all priests from entering
the island. The Chapter of Goa refuses his offer because the mission would have
meant certain death for him.

1681 Is sent to rescue the almost extinct mission in Kanara, present-day
Karnataka in India. Rebuilds the Church in Mangalore and Kanara, establishes
missions, tends to the sick, ransoms prisoners.

1684 Returns to Goa and joins a band of native Indian priests who formed a
community.

1685 Founds the Indian branch of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri, on September
25.

1686 Leaves Goa secretly and sets out for Sri Lanka.

1687 Arrives in Jaffna in the Tamil region of Sri Lanka, with a servant, John
Vaz, both disguised as coolies. He works with a price on his head.1691 Is
almost captured by the Dutch and is advised to go to Kandy. Is brought into
Kandy in chains and imprisoned as a Portuguese spy by the Buddhist King,
Vimaladharma Surya II.

1693 Works a miracle of rain during a severe drought. The King releases him
and gives him protection and freedom to preach in his kingdom. As in Goa and in
Mangalore, is often seen in ecstasy in prayer. The people call him Sammana
Swami or Angelic Father.

1697 Is joined by three of his Indian Oratorians from Goa. During a small-pox
epidemic in Kandy, the King and the people flee the capital. Fr. Vaz and Fr.
Carvalho, tend to the dying and abandoned victims for almost two years.

1705 Dedicates the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu.

1711 Dies in Kandy on January 16, after 23 years of arduous missionary work in
Sri Lanka.

The Work of Blessed Joseph Vaz His missionary work was not colonial, not
helped, authorized, associated with conquest by a colonial power. He gained the
protection of a non-Christian King, Vimaladharma Surya II of Kandy, a devout
Buddhist. He used inculturation as a missionary method. He founded a Catholic
para-liturgy and literature using the two languages and cultures of Sri Lanka,
Tamil and Sinhalese; he practiced and taught Meditation. He educated his
servant John Vaz, a member of the Indigenous tribe of Kunbis, and sent him back
to Goa with a letter of recommendation to the priesthood. At that time, the
Portuguese Church Councils reserved the priesthood only for the two higher
castes in Goa. He founded the miraculous Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, one of
the five officially crowned Marian Shrines of the Church, crowned in 1924,
before Fatima.

He is the first non-European native in modern times to found a Mission and
Church in a Third World country; to found a fully native Catholic Religious
Congregation; and to be given the official title of Apostle (of Kanara and
Sri Lanka) by the Church, for his work in rescuing the
Church there. His Indian Oratorian Mission is the only fully native,
non-European Catholic Mission of our colonial era. The Church he re-founded in
Sri Lanka was persecuted and survived isolation from Rome for 140 years: Here
is a country in which the faith was first preached, and a Church founded with
great success to flourish for over a century, by missionaries who, being
afterwards forced by the political failure of their nation to abandon the
field, left this island for good and their converts... without churches or
priests and under the heel of a persecutor; and a single priest (Joseph Vaz)
from another country, came here of his own accord..and laboring heroically
with a price upon his head, revived the faith and made many conversions in the
teeth of persecution, imprisonment and hostility..(no) subsequent political,
social, and ecclesiastical changes in the country were ever able to undo his
work;it must be stated with caution and subject
to correction, but no other instance of

[Goanet] India has more cellphones than toilets

2010-04-21 Thread Bernado Colaco
I believe the ratio of toilets to cellphones may have improved since 61. There
are so many cumaos in Goa.

BC

I wonder what the report has to say about the developed countries.  It seems
to me that there is an implication that the developed countries have more
toilets than phones.  Of course, the ratio of phones to toilets in the
developed countries would be better than countries like India.  But the use
of phone vs toilets is an absurd one.  The correct ratio to compare is how
many houses has toilets.  And if the article is to be believed, there is an
improvement.  There is more to be done, but let us also recognize the
improvements.

[Goanet] Goa police on lookout for LTTE cadres, sympathisers

Goa police on lookout for LTTE cadres, sympathisers

Police are keeping an eye on Sri Lankan Tamils possibly working on
fishing trawlers and in the mushrooming hotel industry in coastal Goa
after the union home ministry warned of infiltration by surviving cadres
of the decimated Tamil Tigers.

'The home ministry circular was forwarded to us by the state home
department Monday. The instructions are to keep a vigil on ghettos where
Tamil-speaking persons tend to stay,' a police official told IANS.

'We have also been asked to keep an eye on fishing trawler hubs and
source information on any possible LTTE sympathisers working in the
hotel line (industry),' he said.

The official added that immigration records were also being scanned to
see if any Sri Lankan nationals had landed in Goa in recent times.

Superintendent of Police Omprakash Kurtadkar, who is in charge of Goa
Police's foreigner's branch, has issued a circular to all police
stations and immigration points to look out and maintain surveillance
for suspicious Tamil Tiger sympathisers.

'A lot of Sri Lankan Tamils are found indulging in illegal activities.
Efforts should be made to locate them,' the circular reads.

Some years ago, the state police and Indian customs officials had seized
a global positioning system (GPS) equipped fishing trawler registered in
Sri Lanka which had strayed into India's territorial waters.

Fearing infiltration by surviving cadres of the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE) - after the rebels were decimated last year - the
Indian home ministry has ordered all states to look out for them.

Re: [Goanet] How Scientific is Medicine?

2010-04-21 Thread Santosh Helekar
Noronha has mischaracterized my post in his response appended below. So in
making false statements about what I have written in it, by his own warped
logic, Noronha has attempted to tarnish me, the author of my post.

My comments were directed at Huffington Post and the article published in it.
The term full-fledged dishonest pseudoscientific operation refers to
Huffington Post, not to the motives of this specific author Dana Ullman, as
Noronha falsely claims. The term silly diatribe refers to the contents of the
article, not to the author or his motives. The words publicist and salesman
accurately describe the author's profession. Please see the following website
owned by the author Dana Ullman on which he publicizes homeopathy and sells
homeopathic books, pamphlets, CD-ROMs, etc. I cannot call him a homeopath
because he has no degree in homeopathy, and is not qualified to practice it.

That his article is a silly diatribe against modern medicine is obvious.
Despite its title it says nothing about science, and nothing about what is
meant by scientific. The whole thing is simply a transparent assault on the
motives and sincerity of doctors, other mainstream medical professionals and
the medical establishment as a whole. Here are some pertinent quotes:

QUOTE
Despite the truly massive amounts of money that doctors, hospitals and drug
companies are effectively extracting from patients, employers, insurance
companies and governments, we are certainly not getting our money's worth.
UNQUOTE
Dana Ullman

QUOTE
Although modern physicians may point their collective finger at various
alternative or natural treatment modalities as examples of quackery, it is
conventional medical treatments today that are out-of-this-world expensive, and
despite real questionable efficacy of their treatments, doctors give patients
the guise of science.
UNQUOTE
Dana Ullman

It is clear that because of his self-interest in homeopathy (an alternative
treatment modality in his words), all he has is a personal grudge against
doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, etc. This has nothing to do with
science. If he cared so much about a discipline being scientific then he would
have demanded that homeopathic principles and practices be subjected to the
same rigors of self-critical scientific inquiry as modern medicine is, which he
has never done. If anything, his idea of science or the state of being
scientific appears to be exactly the opposite of what it is supposed to be, to
allow special exemption for homeopathy.

Above all, the fact that his entire case is a sham, fraught with dishonesty, is
also evident from the fact that he has deliberately falsified or twisted facts
from the following BMJ Clinical Evidence blog item, which is his principal
reference in his diatribe:

http://clinicalevidence.bmj.com/ceweb/about/knowledge.jsp

Here are his false statements:

1. Eight percent were as likely to be harmful as beneficial
.Dana Ullman

The truth from the BMJ blog is 8% represents a trade-off between benefits and
harm

2. 46 percent were unknown whether they were efficacious or harmful
.Dana Ullman

The truth from the BMJ blog is 49% are of unknown effectiveness. There is no
mention of them being harmful in the latter category. Here is how the BMJ blog
defines this category:

Unknown effectiveness - For which there are currently insufficient data or
data of inadequate quality.
BMJ Clinical Evidence Blog

Please see: http://clinicalevidence.bmj.com/ceweb/about/guide.jsp

To get a sense of what this means, if BMJ Clinical Evidence criteria are
applied to homeopathy or any other alternative to modern scientific medicine,
more than 80% of their treatments would fall under the Unknown effectiveness
category, and all of the rest under Likely to be ineffective category. Please
note that BMJ is only considering hard evidence published in peer-reviewed
medical literature. So testimonials, grandmother's stories and opinion
editorials do not count.

Cheers,

Santosh

In order to

 at higher level.

In the meanwhile Milagrine Antao complained

[Goanet] Imprisoning Forest in Goa

2010-04-21 Thread sebastian Rodrigues

I was in Colamb, Sanguem today and met up with Avelino Antao, a farmer
in a Forest village for past decades in his forested surroundings. As we
began talking about mining suddenly two officers of Goa Forest
department crossed the nearby road. Avelino then started a conversation
on state of forest in his village with particular reference to role of
forest officers of Goa State. He narrated as to how natural forest in
Colamb is being cut down by Goa Forest department and monoculture
species are being planted. He believed that Forest department was acting
foolish in this way. Avelino did not approve of this trend by the
Forest department. Actually Forest department has been imprisoning
natural forest in Colamb and elsewhere in Goa. This needs to be reversed
and new trend must be started, a trend of letting natural forest to
Grow.

In Colamb in the past few months 14,000 trees have been
chopped down with the permission from Forest department. This is the
case of Palondikar mine which is operating in full swing without
Environmental Clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF).
It is matter of serious concern that Goa Forest department has become
darling of miners. Several thousand hectares of land has been parceled
to mining companies all over Goa to mining companies. Regional Plan 2010
has details on this. Goa government has even been arguing that there is
no need for buffer zone for sanctuaries. It appointed a high powered
committee headed by senior bureaucrat Rajiv Yadhuvanshi which suggested
zero kilometers as buffer zone for wildlife sanctuaries in Goa. This
cleared way for miners in Goa to start digging and ripping the earth
apart. Central government thankfully has rejected this nasty proposal of
Goa government that meant total surrender to the mining industry.
Earlier Goa Chief Conservator of Forest Shashi Kumar went to Delhi some
months back and argued at the Wildlife board of India that permissions
be granted for mining projects within buffer zone of the sanctuary.
Shashi Kumar looks as if he is a public advocate of mining industry that
is bent upon destroying Goa's forests. and of course it is well know
fact that Forest department is well known collaborator of wiping out of
any traces of tigers in Goa and persecute those who stand in defense of
ecology like Rajendra Kerker. Now even inspite of villagers of Cavrem
declaring that there exists tigers in Quepem western forests, Forests
department is denying the reports. The intentions of Goa's forest
department can be described as 'vicious' at best. It is a front ranking
ally of the nefarious mining industry in Goa.

It is well known
fact as to what are the intentions of Forest department of Goa is: to
aggressive imprison Goa's forest through monoculture and mining. There
is a need for massive overhauling in the constitution of Forest
department in Goa. Currently forest department in Goa is an agency of
exploitation par excellence. We have to join hands to change this
situation with vigilance and organised action.

[Goanet] Saluting the real son of Goa

2010-04-21 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Saluting the Real Son of Goa

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 09:29 AM PDT

The resounding verdict of the Opinion Poll held on 16th Jan 1967 saved Goa and
Goans from being gulped by its big neighbor Maharashtra . Though all out
attempts were made by the first Chief Minister of Goa late Dayanand Bandodkar
and his Maharashtra Gomantak Party ( MGP) ably supported by the politicians
from Maharashtra to get Goa assimilated into its northern neighbour . It was
under the stewardship of the then charismatic leader Joao Hugo Eduardo de
Sequeira or popularly called Dr Jack de Sequeira that Goans from all walks of
life defeated the nefarious designs of pro merger forces . So passionate and
strong were the anti merger views of this first time MLA from Panjim and later
three times MLA from neighboring Santa Cruz that this pro Goa group soon became
abode to both commoners and Goan luminaries of that era like V.M. Salgaokar,
Ulhar Buyao, Uday Bhembre, Chandrakant Keni etc..
If Goa had become a part of Maharashtra it would have lost its unique identity.
It’s rich heritage of art and culture would have got completely deluged in the
waters of “Marathi Asmita” . An elegy on Konkani language would have become a
reality. Goans would have become minority in their own land . And worse Goa
would have become one of the secluded districts of Maharashtra like Sawantwadi
or Ratnagiri .
The way Goa is being turned into a concrete jungle, construction of high
storied buildings, pristine land being sold to the highest bidder i.e. the real
estate agents , cutting of hills , hacking of trees , mushrooming of both legal
and illegal mining etc etc All these ecologically unsound activities would all
have made Dr Sequeira feel sad and despondent. The founder president of United
Goan Party (UGP) wanted Goa to be developed as the numero uno eco friendly
tourism place of India.
A worthy point to ponder is that during the time of Dr Sequeira flora and fauna
was given paramount importance . For instance unlike the present concrete state
existing in the left hand side stretch from Campal to Miramar, there existed
green fields. People connected with the anti merger group nostalgically
remember that Dr Sequeira joined politics to save Goa. He was immensely proud
of his Goan roots . Dr Sequeira did not look at politics as a avenue to
embezzle public money which is the trend with most of the present day State’s
politicians.
Out of Dr Sequeira’s nine children only his eldest son late Erasmo Jesus de
Sequeira entered politics . The two time MP from Marmagoa parliamentary
constituency apart from being a top leader of UGP also worked whole heartedly
for creating favourable opinion in the 16th January 1967 referendum. Today none
of his five surviving children are in the murky world of Goan Politics.
Yes, the need of the hour is that Goa needs more and more politicians who have
a character like Dr Sequeira who was a businessman by profession and often used
to contribute to run the affairs of UGP from his own pocket . Being a God
fearing person he would ensure that he did not miss the evening rosary with his
family at home.
We need to constantly work to fulfill the dreams of Dr Sequeira for a better
and safe Goa. All right thinking Goans whether they are Hindus, Catholics or
Muslims need to work vigorously to fight the evils engulfing Goa like
desecration of the places of worship, environmental degradation caused through
mining and mega projects, very long delay in the incorporation of Roman script
in the official language Act, garbage strewn all over the state, narrow roads,
prostitution dens masquerading as massage parlors, politicization of police,
removal of river princess- - a ship half sunk from Candolim beach and so forth.
NGOs and groups like GBA who really feel for Goa should come forward and unite
to save this lovely state from the clutches of haphazard development which one
day would destroy the real essence of Goa . GBA would really do a stupendous
service to Goa if it contests the next assembly elections by nominating
candidates with right credentials. Dr Sequeira had honesty inborn in him.
It is sad that most of us in Goa today have forgotten the breathtaking role
played by Dr Sequeira in keeping Goa as a separate unit of the Indian Union.
Most of our children hardly know who Dr Sequeira was because not a single
chapter is devoted in Goa’s school on the father of the Opinion Poll. To keep
the legacy of this greatest of the great Goan leader alive , a permanent chair
should also be established at Goa University to study the life and times of Dr
Jack de Sequeira.
It is a big shame that our State government did not have funds to get his
statue erected. Incidentally, the cost of the statue at Donna Paula circle was
borne by Dr Sequeira’s family. Why have we forgotten our hero so soon ? Will
our State government celebrate the centenary celebrations in the next four

Good Policy http://rajivndesai.blogspot.com/2010/04/good-policy.html

Need Governance

In many ways, the government has embarked on a path breaking route, in terms
of both domestic and foreign policy.

To begin with, there is the issue of fertilizer subsidies. In one fell
swoop, by targeting subsidies on the basis of nutrients, the government has
changed the game. Now farmers will look to nutrients other than urea. This
will increase yields dramatically. Urea-based fertilizers were good and
government policies championed their use. Over the years, it became clear
that they had passed the point of diminishing returns. Everywhere in the
world, governments promoted suplhur-based and other nutrients in the mix to
increase yields and protect the soil.

With all the noise about food inflation, the government has pointed to the
exploitative role of middlemen in the journey that farm products make from
the fields to the market. The finance minister made several references to
the need for organized retail in the grocery business, most recently at the
CII national meeting in Delhi.

Coming to taxes, the finance minister, in his budget speech, cut individual
taxes while increasing some indirect levies. The idea is sterling: put more
money in the hands of middle class families and let them decide what they
can or cannot afford. If I am considering buying a car and it costs a few
thousand rupees more, it is my call. By putting economic decisions in the
hands of citizens, the government has made a major paradigm shift.

On internal security, the government has made major moves. It has taken on
the Maoist movement in central India with force. The most recent incident in
Dantewada only underscored the Prime Minister's six-old assessment that
Maoists pose the most significant threat to national security. True, there
are complaints of security forces riding roughshod over the militants. But
then, Dantewada showed that the Maoists are not known for their grace and
diplomacy either. This tough approach seeks not only to contain the
insurgents but to send a clear message that this is a hard government that
will not stomach violent agitations.

On the national security front, the government has embarked on a new course.
While initiating talks with Pakistan, it authorized a major Air Force
exercise in the desert of Rajasthan to demonstrate its fighting
capabilities. It was a brilliant move to invite most defense attaches of
diplomatic missions and to leave out the representatives of China and
Pakistan. The idea clearly was to exhibit hard power.

To reinforce the government's hard line, the Prime Minister went to Saudi
Arabia and urged the authorities there to weigh in with Pakistan to control
the various terrorist groups that operate from there. It's clear the
Pakistan government has neither the wherewithal nor the will to reign in
various terrorist groups that have a free run within its borders. A Saudi
nudge could go a long way to boost the crippled Zardari government and the
rogue elements within its army and the intelligence agency.

The emphasis on infrastructure is a key feature aspect of the government's
priorities. Roads, ports, airports, railroads are being built. The trouble
is that corrupt and inept government agencies are in charge and its users
are citizens, who lack civic consciousness. Thus it gets caught up in the
bottlenecks caused by lackadaisical enforcement and scofflaw citizens.

Many cities now have modern airports; they are like white elephants because
the minute you step outside there is total chaos. It's the same thing for
the highways. We recently traveled to Chandigarh from Delhi. The road is a
work in progress and there are significant flyovers and wide pavements. But
there is total traffic chaos. Even as you rev to the top speed of 90
kilometers an hours, you find yourself having to deal with vehicles going
the wrong way, underpowered trucks, three-wheeled vehicles, bullock carts,
cycle rickshaws, handcarts, herds of cows and sheep and scariest of all,
daredevil pedestrians trying to cross the highway. There is simply no
policing, no signage or any other accoutrements that go with modern
highways. It's almost as though modern amenities are made available to
people with a medieval mindset.

Tragedy is the police have no authority to enforce the law. Even worse, they
don't even know the law. Just recently, I stopped a police car on the
spanking new expressway that connects Delhi and Gurgaon to the airports. I
told the police officer that the unchecked use of the expressway by two- and
three-wheeled vehicles was a major traffic violation. I told him there were
signs that these vehicles were not allowed. He told me to mind my own
business. The government needs also to show its hard self here as much

Venantius, Thanks for your post... Googling for some links took me to

We the Goans…
http://musafiri.rediffblogs.com/

Bombay's Watson's Hotel had been host to India's first cinema
screening on July 7, 1896, a show
that advertised itself as living photographic pictures in life-sized
reproductions by Messrs Lumiere Brothers. By New Year's day in 1900,
the Tivoli Theatre was screening 25 pictures, with music by a string
band. A portrait photographer named Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar
became the first Indian to import a motion-picture camera from London
and he shot a wrestling match between two well-known musclemen in
1897. Other locally-shot films followed, including Alibaba, Hariraj
and Buddha by a Bengali named Hiralal Sen. A creative flashback
projects the tantalising image of Bombay audiences drinking in
black-and-white scenes from Indian folktales as a Goan string quartet
trots out phrases from Mozart and snatches of mandos, varying the
tempo to match the action on screen. Goans have stayed in the picture
ever since.

Saturday, January 03, 2009 The Swinging Sounds of Goa
One of the most famous Konkani pop songs from the 1960s is Lorna's
Bebdo. Here it is, with lyrics and translation:
Pretty swinging, huh? The sassy tone and subject matter reminds me a
little of Trinidadian Calypso from around the same period. It's true
that there is a dark side to these types of songs (alcoholism, and the
hint of domestic violence), but there is also a buoyancy and power in
her voice that I really enjoy. (Are there other 60s Goan/Konkani
tracks available on sites like YouTube that readers would recommend?)

Ina Mina Dika is from the 1957 movie Aasha. The music director was
C.Ramachandran, who also composed 'Ana meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday',
and songs from Albela, Anarkali and the famous patriotic song 'Aye

He had a Goan assistant composer,John Gomes (from Wikipedia), and the
song undoubtedly has Goan influences apart from the Konkani words
'Maka naka naka'.

:::Kuwait Indians mourn the death of ex-footballer Peter Colaco:::
Navelim play with black armbands;Maroons bow out: NYC Trophy

:::Report by Gasper Crasto for www.goa-world.com/ (Tel. No. 9950 2686):::

Kuwait: Hosts Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) played with black armbands while a
minute's silence was observed in each of the matches played in the ongoing
21st Edition of the NYC Trophy as a mark of respect to Peter Colaco, founder
member and ex-footballer of NYC, who died on 13th April onboard a Kuwait
Airways flight whilst returning back from India.

In a statement to the media NYC President Agnello A.S. Fernandes said,
Peter Colaco's loss is colossal to the club. A founder member, Peter was one
of those for whom discipline meant everything. An excellent footballer, he
was one the favorites on Soor Grounds during his prime playing days. To his
family, Peter was a caring father and a loving husband. To us, Peter was a
very kind person, always ready to help. He always had a solution to any
problem and had a way of making things simple. In him, we have lost a
stalwart supporter of NYC. The abyss created by him will be felt for a long
time to come.

Navelim advanced to the semifinals beating CRC Chinchinim 2-1 while strong
contenders and tournament favorites GOA Maroons bowed out of the tournament
with a tie-breaker defeat.

The tournament played at Sabah Hospital Grounds under the auspices of Kuwait
Indian Football Federation (KIFF) is sponsored by international corporate
houses Gulf Custody Company, Axis Bank and My Money Mart.

Navelim took the lead through captain Americo Fernandes only to see
goalkeeper Britto Pereira, one of the most popular players in Kuwait, commit
a silly mistake in advancing out of his den unnecessarily to allow
Chinchinim's Sedwin Gomes to level the scores.

Navelim's playmaker Duarte Ferrao combined superbly with medio Bernard Pires
to scramble the match winner late into the match. Chinchinim goalkeeper
Anthony Fernandes and striker Sony Gomes were outstanding throughout the
match while stopper back John Furtado, Kelwin Rodrigues, Simon, Bernard and
Christi Pires excelled for NYC.

Navelim meet United Goans (UG) Strikers in the first semi-finals on 23rd
April 2010.

:::Mighty Maroons bow out:::

Goa Maroons dominated most of the first session against United Friends Club
(UFC), hitting the post more than once but could not get the much needed
goal. Jaime Figuera, Carlos D'Sa, Ian D'Souza, Gabriel Fernandes, Joseph and
Steven Correia played well for Maroons. United Friends Club, watched by
their club President Cajetan Pereira played a defensive game almost
intentionally holding the much superior Maroons to go in for the tie-breaker
Anthony Fernandes, Alino Silvano Mendes and Godwin were on target for UFC.

It may be noted that despite winning the game, some senior players of UFC
were seen screaming abuse in a language perhaps not understood by the
officiating referee P.A. Tony, one of the best referees in Kuwait. Many of
the spectators raised questions whether clubs or officials do anything to
curb this kind of 'uneducated' behavior from players playing in the Kuwait
Indian Football Federation (KIFF) tournaments where much importance is
emphasized on discipline and fair-play.

In another match, Curtocares United beat Santos Football Club 2-0 to reach
the last four stage. Zico Fernandes and Minguel Mouro scored for the winners
Curtorcares will face United Friends Club in the semi-final clash.

In an earlier match, United Goans beat Rising Stars in the tie-breaker for a
semi-final berth. Francisco Fernandes, Edward Britto, Alwyn Pontes,
Frederick D'Souza, Ravi Narvekar and Anthony Silveira took the spot kicks
for United Goans.

Semi-final line-up (23/04/2010):
Navelim Youth Centre v/s United Goans at 6.45 am
Curtorcares United v/s United Friends Club at 8.15 am

[Goanet] Cut Evil at Root (Goa)

2010-04-21 Thread Arwin Mesquita
It is good to see many activists spending their valuable time for the
benefit of Goa Goans, while many other Goans are dormant, enjoying their
corrupt benefits and will wake up only too late. I suggest that that
these genuine activists consider cutting evil at its root i.e. target these
corrupt politicians at elections and look at mobilizing people to vote out
these Anti-Goans. The latter will ease out the pressures like the ones that
these activists are facing today. I appreciate that there are some
constituencies where powerful Ministers have doped their constituencies
with incentives, to realize their significantly higher profits, but surely
there will be some constituencies that can be saved from the clutches of the
ruthless politicians and will be a role model for others to follow. Goans
must understand that we do not need to be enslaved to corrupt politicians
for development, at an actual high destructive cost to Goa. And as for the
Ministers who are using their stable electorate to destroy Goa today; surely
the real culprits are the people of the respective constituency, who are
keeping these respective Ministers in Power.

[Goanet] Bachchans eyeing summer home in Aldona?

Bachchans eyeing summer home in Aldona?

HERALD CORRESPONDENT
PORVORIM, APRIL 20
The quiet village of Aldona is slowly turning into a popular destination
for high-profile personalities that include actors, writers and models.

And, the latest buzz that has excited residents is the possibility that
the village could have Bollywood’s most famous couple – Aishwarya and
Abhishek Bachchan – as its new residents.

Aldona is already home to popular fashion model Ujwala Raut and
award-winning author Amitav Ghosh, as they own houses in the village.

A few days ago, Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan had reportedly visited
Aldona to look out for a house and the news spread like wildfire in the
village as well as in cyberspace.

“It is believed that Bollywood’s glam couple, Aishwarya and Abhishek
Bachchan, are house hunting in Goa, and they have zeroed in on Aldona
where a bungalow belonging to a Kashmiri has caught the family’s eye.
It’s of Portuguese architecture and has a swimming pool attached,” was a
message posted on the Aldona-net groups by humour writer Cecil Pinto,
who hails from Aldona.

“Amitabh and Abhishek, who is shooting in Canacona for Dum Maro Dum,
went around the house last week. Abhishek is understood to have fallen
in love with Goa after working on his second film there and would be
keen to have a summer home in the picturesque State,” Pinto added.

While some excited residents claimed to have spotted the Bachchans,
others already began speculating on the money that would be trading
hands for the house in the village
Incidentally, Bollywood star Nana Patekar also has plans to settle down
in Aldona.

“I have decided to settle down in Aldona because of the serene and quiet
atmosphere of the village and the good people residing there. I will be
happy to reside in the village if the people accept me as an
‘Aldonkar’,” said Patekar in November 2009, while addressing a gathering
at the Shri Ganesh Sadashiv Narvekar Smruti Sangeet Sammelan in the
premises of Bhagvati temple, Aldona.

However, some have already begun to raise concerns over the impact on
the village, with the possible arrival of the Bachchans and other famous
personalities in Aldona.

“Unfortunately, the Bachchans are very particular about privacy which
means high walls around the bungalow as in their Juhu homes. It will
also mean large crowds around the area hanging around for a look at them
when the news goes out that one of them is in. This creates traffic
problems in Juhu. In Bandra, if Salman is on the road or at home, the
streets are totally clogged with people in a variety of vehicles hoping
for a view of him, and large crowds around his home hoping to see him
and have him wave at them.

God Bless the people of Aldona,” stated Louise Fernandez, in another
post on Aldona-net.
“Time to move” was a query raised by a resident, Vidyadhar Gadgil, while
another poster Patrick de Souza was also circumspect in his post: “There
goes the neighbourhood.”

COMMENTS: Speaking of high walls, as soon as Akshay Kumar bought and
occupied the house opposite mine, neighbors as well as outsiders began
to flock at the place to have a glimpse of the actor and his wife,
Twinkle Khanna. So, he immediately raised the compound wall all around
to a height of eleven feet and placed broken glass pieces on its top -
an old method to prevent mischievous people from climbing the compound
wall and jumping inside the property!

Akshay Kumar and his family don't live in the house but use it as a rest
place whenever they are in Goa shooting for a movie. Obviously, they
need their privacy; hence, they don't entertain any visitors/guests in
their home. A local boy looks after the house, and a guard mans the main
gate.

Right now, its difficult for people passing by the place to tell if
there is a bungalow inside the compound wall, which reminds me of the
high compound walls around the homes of Arabs in the Gulf, which are
built to prevent men from looking at their women!

[Goanet] Archbishop on Harrassment of Christians

2010-04-21 Thread Ivo da C.Souza

Dear Goanetters,
I am publishing the letter of the Archbishop Leo Cornelio, SVD about the
persecutions of the Christians in M.P. and A.P. Let him speak from his heart. I
do believe him. Let others take their own decision. Let the truth prevail!

Dear Fr. Ivo,
Greetings and peace of the Risen Lord!
I noted the contents of your email message. Thank you for your compliments. But
at the same time you wanted to know whether these happenings are real or
exaggerated. Well, some happenings can be accidental or circumstantial. But
events cannot be continuous, repeated, patterned unless these are
systematically planned at a higher level. There is a method in the occurrences,
and as Shakespeare would say, if there is a method even in madness, it cannot
be sheer madness but planned madness. And I believe that it is planned on a
higher level by a fringe group of extremists who belong to VHP, Bhajrang or
some splinter Hindu outfits. We don't blame Hindus as a religious group. The
vast majority of Hindus are peace-loving, fair minded and reasonable. They
appreciate our service-minded nature, may it be in any area - education, health
care, social service, services to the down trodden, poor, helpless, etc. But
then, this is what exactly fills this fringe group members with anger and envy.
We, a handful of Christian minority, are out to make a difference in the Indian
social and caste system that is sacrosanct to them. But again, it is very
likely that these people are burning with the zeal for their religion or for
the God they believe in. Their God is money, fame, name, riches, political
gains. This is the backgroup, I believe, that evokes these attrocities.

How do we know that these are planned?
It is so clear and easy to know. In places where there are meetings of
Christians (when they are in smaller numbers, of course), or prayer groups,
they are attacked and dispersed in a violent manner, of course. (Just a couple
of days ago in Betul, when such a group gathered for prayer was dispersed and
the Christians ran for their life, one young boy of 21 fell in a well and
died). When members of these groups go to the Police Station, the police not
only refuse to register an FIR but scold them or even arrest them saying that
there is already an FIR registered against them. Reason? Forced conversion. It
has been happening so many times. How is it possible?
On January 28 a Seminary student from Andhra Pradesh, studying in Std. 11
in our Minor Seminary just in the outskirts of Bhopal, committed suicide. The
police came, it made a study of the matter, interviewd the staff and students
and found that there was nothing amiss. It was a purely suicide case. There was
post-mortem and later on a church burial in his hometown in Andhra Pradesh.
After more than 6 weeks, there was an accusation by the father of the boy
saying that his was a Hindu family and the boy was forcibly taken from his home
and was baptized and was forced to study for priesthood. So, out of
frustration, the boy committed suicide. A criminal case was registered against
the parish priest of the home parish of that boy and against the Rector of the
Minor Seminary. All this was done by the VHP members, Bhopal, in connivance
with the VHP people in A.P. Again, how do we know it? Just at the time of the
arrest of the Rector, there was a press interview organized by VHP Chiefs in
Bhopal along with the father of that boy whom they brough from Andhra Pradesh.
Do you need more proofs of this type? I can refer to many. They attack houses,
they attack schools, they prevent rural visits and help to the dalits and
tribal people. Those who can swallow it are those who are blind and deaf with
such sympathies to the extremists that they are imprisoned with chains of lies
and make-belief world. I wish to exaggerate it or make false allegations? The
Lord has asked us to stand for truth and Truth will make us free. If the Risen
Lord is with us, as he has promised repeatedly, we have nothing to fear and
there is no need to hide facts.
As for exaggeration... Well, when many such incidents of this sort happen, we
have to conclude that every event that takes place, is preplanned by these
people, unless there is clear indication that it is only an isolated accident.
Well, Fr. Ivo, there is restraint of time, or else I could write to you
more of such happenings. As faith cannot be forced on anyone (though that is
exactly what the extremists claim as being done!), so also we cannot force
people to trust what we Christians say, much less convince them of the reasons
why we do what we do. I mean, all our charitable actions everywhere. Will they
ever believe in the content and spirit of the last Encyclical of Pope Benedict
XVI, Caritas in Veritate? How can any man be so selfless? Christ

Dear Marshall,

Thank you for the correction about Wg Cdr Clarence D'Lima Marg.
The info was given to me by his first-cousin who I guess is also on
this list. I referred to John Lobo in my Feb 28 piece (should be
available in Goanet archives) -- and how he carried Morarji Desai
and son Kantibhai in his arms to safety.

Last Sunday, if you noticed, I was exclusively on Goans who died
in service in the Indian Airforce. Next Sunday's piece will also be on
the IAF exclusively. I will then come to Goans in the army and navy.
No Goan studying the subject could ever miss Maj Gen Eustace W
Fernandes. What you say is true, he was days away from assuming
charge of the Northern Command as a Lt Gen, but since he had
nothing else to do in Delhi, decided to inspect the arms, explosives
and IEDs seized from Pak-trained terrorists in JK.

But that apart, one cannot say with any certainty that he was tipped
to take over as Chief of the Army Staff -- maybe he stood a chance --
but then other considerations (and don't forget the political !) play a part
in the appointment to the top job.

on Cdr Clarence Joseph D'Lima:
This is something. I often wonder why our politicians (even the Goan ones)
cannot make small gestures (even in utter fakery since most will people will
see them as genuine) to recognize such efforts. Perhaps no one cares. Its
like, Kay mota parakram tyani kela (Mar). Kitem vhoddlem kelem tenen.
Kaamant somplo to bhov maan oxe, /aashem familint sozmonlzai. Anik kitem
(Konk).

Cecilia's cousin Major Roland Nazareth (from Pune, Sholapur Rd? ), I believe
was hounded by the government/forces since he has filed a case against the
government when he was at Khadakvasla. They posted him regularly in the
North, and he died of drink and gangrene. His men (signals) loved him.

I believe there was an Anglo Micky Blake who turned away from bombing Daman
when he saw people waving white flags.

And Maj Gen Eustace Fernandes, lets just say---perhaps it was not his time.

Based on my experiences over the past decade, I am tending to believe that
many people are tired of successful people who may be Christians--even
marginal Christians; which many of us happen to be. Tired as in Baba, fade
away yaar. We love you, we love your daughters--but sell bread or something,
weld this grill, teach me dance, can we drink at your place (that may be
passe now), now I do not even need you to teach my child English, and so
forth.

All one can do is perhaps, as in my case--attempt to learn the ways of our
forefathers, the languages, the ways of life, and instill it into our
beings.

Re: [Goanet] Status of our State and Country

2010-04-21 Thread Zenade Peu

We all agree that we have a modernizing government that is beset by a crude
political class, a malignant bureaucracy and a pre-modern citizenry. As such,
even though the government pursues enlightened policies, the ship of state
seems to be caught on the rocks of casteism, communalism and corruption.

Bureaucrats blame crass politicians and the ignorant citizenry. Politicians
castigate the bureaucracy. Citizens berate politicians and bureaucrats. It’s a
sort of beggar-thy-neighbor view that enables the entire system to elude
responsibility. If everyone’s to blame, then nobody is accountable.

This is the challenge for India that the world deems as an up and coming power.

[Goanet] Goanet] India has more cellphones than toilets

2010-04-21 Thread manuel tavares
I do not think relating Telephones to Toilets is absurd. It reflects where our
priorities lie. In India perhaps the phone is a status symbol and therefore if
one has a phone, it is a matter of prestige but before one commits to the
phone, one must think of one's cleanliness and this is a field in India which
is totally lacking. We seem to think that the world is a toilet and this
attitude must change. Building more public toilets in urban areas which are
properly maintained would be a start. After all it is said that cleanliness is
next to godliness isn't it?

This post is even more confusing.  1548 is a part of the 1540's.  But why do we
need to believe? Are written records not available?
Afonso de Albuquerque is reported to have married off the widows of Adilshahi
warriors to his Portuguese soldiers.  Were these women not baptized before
their marriage?  Or would they not count as Goans, so that Locu Sinai becomes
the first Goan?
I think we need the intervention of a historian here.
