[Goanet] re VIVA-RE-GOA presented by late NOLASCO DIAS

2011-12-21 Thread Eugene Correia
I would also be interested in buying a copy of the cassette. I
remember the song Buddi ka Bal as Nolasco sang it repeatedly as my
dad worked on finetuning it with Nolasco. I wish to know the names of
the songs on the cassette and if any name of music composer is given
on it.I used to laugh at its lyrics.
Buddki Ka Bal iincidentally is Hindi (as a slang perhaps) for
sugar-candy. Vendors used to come around on their bicycles shouting,
Buddi Ka Bal. As a kid I enjoyed it.
Coming again to Nolasco, his song Moipass with Jeanette is a good
melody and was a favourite on All India Radio Goa.. Thanks to Eddie
Verdes for sending me the MP3 version. I had a song Khoro Mog by Young
Chico and Nephie Rod with the same tune but some words are changed and
also the last verse. It is from William de Curtorim's cassette. I
believe William (God bless his soul) had a reputation for remixing
songs to avoid copyright problem.
Good to know that TAG is recognizing Nolasco's contribution to Goan
music and tiatr, though he staged an operrata called Amorechi Ghantto,
which did not find favour with Goians who were and still are in love
with tiatrs. Nolasco lost lot of money on put up the show.

Rico,
We Goans are readily eager to put our hand up.
Hopefully this will change soon for the benefit of Goa and Goans.
Antonio Menezes finds himself confused.
You could help him to be a little less confused.

you have any reasons or logical argument to question the arguments of
Antonio Menezes. Just cursing his supposed slavish mentality or what you

with those laser handling mavens) pinching requires skill--not so crass

[Goanet] Talking Photos: Floats parade depicting Goan Tradition and Culture

2011-12-21 Thread JoeGoaUk
Floats parade depicting Goan Tradition and Culture
Organised by Art and Culture, Govt. of Goa
A part of Golden Jubilee celebrations of Goa Liberation

Floats were good but it seems not organised too well.
To start with, there was a delay of one hour, started at 6 as against 5pm
as if some attempts were made to make the event parade nocturnal.

The beautiful young dancers dancing various Folk dances were interrupted by the
DJ (music)
which stopped or jumped in the middle.

The last Tableau depicting large Portuguese house was too slow or stopped often
and as such the gap between
the second last and the last was as wide as one kilometre.
i.e. when the house was at SBI bank, the other section was well into the
vicinity of Children Park at Campal.
Many missed the last part as they thought it was end of the parade after the
second last one.
This also mean, traffic jam at one side of the DB Road.

There was one tableay depicting Temples, Mosque and church, which was too good

[Goanet] Occupy Wall Street NEEDS YOU!!

2011-12-21 Thread The 99 percent

Though it seems our fight is a perpetual uphill battle, we refuse to give an inch! We
cannot stand by while our nation crumbles under the greed and corruption of the BANKERS
and paid off POLITICIANS!! We say no more and we are being heard. They have
tried to silence us and we yelled louder! They tried to remove us and for every one they
removed two took their spot!

We realize that not everyone can take to the street due to family, age etc..
but you can help us in our fight against tyranny. There are three ways you can
help. One is volunteer through our site to help organize protest. Two is raise
awareness about the cause! Our nations media is controlled by the very people
we protest and thus love to skew the facts. Three is donate. We know times are
tough but every single penny that we take in goes toward feeding the protesters
as well as blankets to keep us from freezing. If you feel a calling to do any
three of those things please visit the site below and click the appropriate
link on the site. One on one we can do nothing but together we are the 99%

Re: [Goanet] Goa government has detected 507 illegal mines in Goa

2011-12-21 Thread J. Colaco jc
re: the 'folded arms' inaction following the detection of illegal mines in Goa

roland.fran...@gmail.com wrote thus to Shantaram Naik, MP: If it
can be proved that you had the SLIGHTEST INKLING of this and did
nothing, you yourself deserve to be in jail.

COMMENT:

While the Naik statement was an astonishing admission of ineptitude
and bekarponn, I am even more concerned by the Roland Francis'
prescription.

In Canada, is the price one pays for one's own (civil) Negligence,
Faleam' and 'Amkam Kityak' ...a jail term?

That would be strange.

Re: [Goanet] THE EXIT OF DGP DR ADITYA ARYA

2011-12-21 Thread J. Colaco jc
[1] 20 December 2011 Sandeep Heble posted

How could Dr Arya expect to survive in Goa by having a rare orthopedic
disorder? He had a straight spine, when he was required to be
spineless.

[2] 20 December 2011 Aires Rodriguez wrote (the language is clumsy
but the point can be discerned):

Having witnessed DGP Arya himself succumb to the political pulls and
pressures, I had first hand experience interacting with the DGP for no
personal favours but over three issues in public interest.

On the case relating to the cheating of the State exchequer by two
Advocates the DGP had assured me of immediate action. However the
instructions he gave to his subordinates were to the contrary.

[3] 22 July 2011 from Nisser Dias
http://www.nizgoenkar.net/newsDetails.php?id=89:

It is for the first time that a top cop has stood up to the Home
minister and stalled the orders. For this act of the DGP he should be
awarded a bravery medal by the people of the state for curbing
political interference in the functioning of the police department.

ps: I am not sure if Sandeep Heble had read this and if he has any
comments about the veracity of the following also from Nisser Dias:

[4] 22 July 2011 from Nisser Dias
http://www.nizgoenkar.net/newsDetails.php?id=89:

Politicians also play a dubious role during the recruitment process.
Lakhs of rupees are collected from candidates to get them enrolled in
the police force. But the height was during Manohar Parrikar’s regime
as chief minister and also Home minister. It is alleged that he
recruited the maximum percentage of police personnel from the majority
community.

Of course he had planned his escape route very well, when media
questioned him, his reply was that minority community candidates did
not apply.

However his act was exposed when High Court observed that the
selection of PSIs during his tenure as illegal and presently the case
is before the Supreme court.

Are you suggesting that whatever he wrote and spoke was only the truth? I
would suggest that a more appropriate word would be ‘outspoken’, a person
who spoke out his mind irrespective of treading on anyone’s toes or
beliefs. Yes, he was a contrarian and that was his USP. He cut a sorry
figure supporting Bush’s misadventure in Iraq and his views on Islam did
him no credit. All the same he was of high intellect and brought in a lot
of fresh air whether one agreed with him or not.

The base of the fort is one of my favourite fishing spots.

Here are pictures of the Chapora Fort for you to see with your own eyes.

Cyriaco made very interesting revelations in his speech..
He along with M Boyer, Remmie, Betty Naz, Betty Ferns etc went to Gulf with
their tiatr in 1978 and stayed there for a month (tour).
He was reading M Boyer’s hand written Konkani Letter (on two middle pages of
Exercise book) sent to him back in 1978
talking about their proposed trip to gulf.
Besides the letter, he also read out some notes from his dairy and this without
using reading glasses which is very unusual
for his age (74) as we know most will make use of glasses after 40.

Prince Jacob, Ben Evangelisto, Sheik Amir, Dr. Gerry Rodricks, Fr. Pratap Naik
, Eddie Marcarenhas etc were present at the meeting.

[Goanet] The magic of Mario (Victor Hugo Gomes in Deccan Herald)

2011-12-21 Thread Goanet News Service

The magic of Mario

Mario Miranda’s trademark sketches of Goan lifestyles are a reflection
of reality, an expression of his love for Goa and its heritage and
culture. His simplicity allowed him to see the lighter side of life,
making his signature caricatures immortal, writes Victor Hugo Gomes

In more than one respect, the loss of Mario Miranda is the end of an
era. An era that began with huge hips and rosy lips; of suspenders and
pot bellies; of romance and laughter. Mario was about the heart.

His illustrations were powerful; with a few simple lines, he would
capture the essence of people. He was able to see humour in just plain
simple life, from the streets to the dining table to office meetings,
funerals and family gatherings.

I first met Mario in my teens. He came backstage at Loutolim, to
congratulate us for winning a one-act play competition. He waited with
us and upon seeing that we had no transport to get back home, he sent
his car to drop us to Benaulim. I knew then that I had met someone special.

Years later, when I was in Lucknow as a national awardee pursuing a
career in fine arts and was training in restoration at INTACH Lucknow,
Mario, the then convener of INTACH Goa, approached my director at
Lucknow for a professional to set up the Christian Art Museum. It was
then that I met Mario again and his humility and simplicity were still
untainted. “Don’t call me sir, call me Mario,” he said.

A connection then made thus was never broken till the end. It was only
because of Mario’s constant support that we worked out a concept and
methodology and were able to put together an enviable collection for the
Christian Art Museum then at Rachol.

During the course of those two years, while I had to document and
archive Christian artefacts, I had to make some tough decisions. I was
young and idealistic then and found it difficult to bend over and it was
during such trying times that Mario proved to be my mentor.

Leafing through the letters he had written to me, I can’t help but
smile, for, in every letter of his he tried to cheer me up and kept
asking me to be more realistic and less passionate.

He wanted me to hang on and not cave in; he even flew from Mumbai to
convince me not to resign as curator and when I finally did it, Mario
resigned with me. This was the Mario I knew and grew fond of. As an
older person, now I can look back and understand why he wanted me to
stay on and I regret that I didn’t. Till recently, he defended my
decision and stood by his principles. Such was the man.

Distinct style
Mario was one of the few cartoonists who published in most of the
leading newspapers and magazines of India long before he retired to his
sprawling mansion in Goa. His simplicity allowed him to see the lighter
side of life. His signature caricatures are immortal.

Even though many generously borrowed his buxom women and suspended
potbellies, and some even used them as their stepping stone to fame
without ethical concerns or patency rights, ironically, they are
Mario’s, and shall be Mario’s, no matter what. This is what Mario has
left for everyone. If you walk into cafés, sidewalk restaurants, hotel
lobbies in Bombay and Goa, Mario is there.

Mario had the gift of making even the most simple, drab looking scene
seem pompous, and yet he was just the opposite — a very simple man. When
I did the annual Great Music Revival series of concerts in Goa, Mario
was always there in the audience, sketching the musicians on stage. When
I visited him a couple of years ago, he was still sketching.

He steadied his shaky hands and let the figures take forms. Although he
said that sketching kept him young, it saddened me to see a man of such
repute as Mario still negotiating for work. Somehow, we made him forget
the value of his signature. The signature that gave an identity to our
tinto (market place), our careira (bus), our poder (baker) and our padre
(vicar).

Silent efforts
But Mario’s initiatives are many for Goa and Goans. He was always
concerned of Goa’s heritage and monuments. When he was the convener of
INTACH Goa, and even later, he would fly down from Mumbai to Goa to
fight for causes of preservation of heritage monuments.

I remember attending meetings on preservation with him and his friend,
architect Sarto Almeida. We attended meetings and meetings — such was
his silent effort that go unmentioned. He would singlehandedly persevere
without any group matrix or band wagons.

That, from the Christian Art Museum he initiated and worked towards
procuring funds for the restoration of the Reis Magos Fort and St Anne
Church needs to be applauded. His initiatives are a testimony to the
simplicity of the man and his love for Goa and its heritage and culture.

In the last few years, even with failing health, he did not hesitate to
lend his name to any initiative or aspiring artistic endeavour. He
didn’t have to, but he did. Taking the support

[Goanet] Autonomy For Goa

2011-12-21 Thread Arwin Mesquita
In 1961, India annexed Goa with a Promise that its Identity would be
preserved and imposed a Constitution that never took Goan concerns into
account nor did it get the approval from Goans. Now we have a pseudo
democracy restricted by some perceived constitutional clauses, which has
left Goa for SALE to the whole of India and doors open to uncontrolled
migrant influx. Anyone who can count will imagine the disastrous
consequences of the latter within a few years. The once overwhelmingly
pristine, beautiful and clean Goa is being dragged by rogues ruling India
into corruption, environment destruction and filth. The Central Government
has deliberately kept Goa in debt/bondage via its ruling stooges in Goa who
have misgoverned the state for many decades. In reality, Goa is a rich
state but looted by the Centre with a percentage given to their Corrupt
Goan agents in Goa. Enough is Enough, if the Central Government is playing
with Goan Sentiments and fooling on Special Status to preserve Goa's
Identity, then I think we should go a step further and now demand Autonomy!

Arwin Mesquita.

[Goanet] Very Funny

2011-12-21 Thread Freddy Fernandes
This is what I received in my mail box this morning, it is funny but said to be
true, how often we so easily jump to wrong conclusions, but this is a peach !

This really is funny. A true story

This would have to be one of the best emails I've ever read For anyone who
didn't see the episode of David Letterman's show where this story was told.
Read this: (And remember it's a true story...)

On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman won a bucketful of Quarters at a
slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in
the Hotel dining room. But first she wanted to stash the Quarters in her room.

I'll be right back and we'll go to eat' she told her husband and carried the
coin-laden bucket to the elevator.

As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard.
Both were black. One of them was very tall and had an intimidating figure. The
woman froze. Her first thought was: 'These two are going to rob me.'

Her next thought was: 'Don't be a bigot, they look like perfectly nice
Gentlemen.' But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her.

Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as
they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her
fear increased! The elevator didn't move. Panic consumed her.

'My God' she thought, I'm trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted.
Perspiration poured from every pore. Then one of the men said, 'Hit the floor.'
Instinct told her to do what they told her

The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and Collapsed on
the elevator floor. A shower of coins rained down on her.

Take my money and spare me', she prayed. More seconds passed.

She heard one of the men say politely, 'Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what
floor you're going to, we'll push the button.'

The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying
mightily to hold in a belly laugh.

The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to
help her up.

Confused, she struggled to her feet. 'When I told my friend here to hit The
floor,' said the average sized one, I meant that he should hit the elevator
button for our floor. I didn't mean for you to hit the floor, ma'am.' He spoke
genially.

He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not to laugh.

The woman thought: 'My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself.' She was too
humiliated to speak.

The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket.

When the elevator arrived at her floor they then insisted on walking her to her
room.

She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not
make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her a good evening. As she
slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked
back to the elevator.

The woman brushed herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs
for dinner with her husband.

The next morning flowers were delivered to her room; a dozen roses.

Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred-dollar bill.
