King of Gambling Stanley Ho passes away at 98: Here's all you did not know
about Macao's casino tycoonAFP

Stanley Ho, the Macao casino tycoon who was considered the father of modern
gambling in China, died Tuesday in Hong Kong, his daughter Pansy Ho said.
He was 98.

Known as the "King of Gambling," the dashing billionaire and bon vivant
secured a four-decade monopoly on casinos in Macao, then parlayed his home
advantage to build the empire that still dominated the industry after it
opened to foreign companies in 2002.

He was the former Portuguese colony's richest person, a lavish spender and
accomplished ballroom dancer who wielded great influence both in Macao and
in neighboring Hong Kong while - according to U.S. authorities -
maintaining ties to organized crime.

Tall, handsome and of mixed Chinese and European heritage, Ho fathered 17
children with four women. His extended family erupted in high-profile
squabbles over his empire during his later years.

Ho himself avoided the gaming floor.

"I don't gamble at all. I don't have the patience," Ho told The Associated
Press in a rare interview in 2001. "Don't expect to make money in gambling.
It's a house game. It's for the house." He also had stakes in businesses
that run everything from the ferries and helicopters connecting Hong Kong
and Macao, to department stores, hotels, Macao's airport and its
horse-racing tracks.

In 2009, Ho underwent brain surgery after he reportedly fell at home and
hit his head. He left the hospital after seven months and was rarely seen
in public afterward, usually in a wheelchair.

His weakened condition may have set the stage for a very public family feud
that erupted in 2011 over control of Macao casino operator SJM Holdings Ltd.

Ho disputed a supposed transfer of his entire multibillion-dollar stake to
five of his children and one of his wives, calling it a "robbery" that went
against his desire to divide the fortune equally among various branches of
his family.

The dispute eventually was settled after several lawsuits, and Ho
transferred most of his SJM shares to family members while officially
remaining chairman until he retired at age 96. He had left the same job at
his Hong Kong conglomerate Shun Tak Holdings a year earlier.

Ho's long and eventful life tracked the ebb and flow of southern China's
fortunes.

He was born on November 25, 1921, into the Hotung family, at the time one
of Hong Kong's wealthiest and most powerful. When he was 13, his father
abandoned the family after being wiped out by a stock market crash during
the Great Depression.

Ho attended Hong Kong University but didn't graduate because of World War
II. Fluent in English and Chinese, he was working as a telephone operator
for British forces when the colony fell to Japan. He boarded a boat for
neutral Macao, joining refugees from mainland China in the dying fishing
port.

"I had to throw away my uniform and run to Macao as a refugee," Ho said in
the 2001 interview.

During the war, he earned money running nighttime smuggling and trading
trips up the Pearl River Delta, surviving a pirate attack on one occasion.

"Macao treated me so well. I went there with 10 dollars in my pocket and
became a millionaire before the age of 20," Ho said.

In 1948, Ho married Clementina Leitao, the daughter of a prominent lawyer
in Macao who had connections to Portugal and to Macao high society. Those
ties and Ho's efforts to curry favor with Macao authorities are said to
have helped him and his business partners win the casino monopoly when it
came up for bidding in 1962. About the same time, Ho married Lucina Laam
under a Qing dynasty code allowing men to take multiple wives. Hong Kong
outlawed the practice in 1971.

Ho fathered children with two other women, Ina Chan and Angela Leong, whom
he referred to as his "wives," though he was not legally married to either.
Ho reportedly met Chan, a nurse, when she was hired to care for an ailing
Leitao, who died in 2004.

Through his love of the tango and the cha-cha, Ho met Leong, a trained
dancer and former ballroom dancing instructor.

After Portugal transferred Macao to China in 1999, the government broke up
Ho's casino monopoly in 2002, allowing in foreign rivals including Las
Vegas Sands Corp., Wynn Resorts Ltd. and MGM Resorts International. The
resulting building boom transformed the sleepy, seedy and corrupt former
colonial outpost into a glitzy gambling powerhouse fueled by high-rolling
mainland Chinese.

Fifth, it is only in three of the state’s 30 districts that Hindutva
politics has taken deep roots. These three districts, with 19 assembly

Udupi and Uttara Kannada have seen Kerala-like internecine political
violence. The BJP has made exaggerated claims of 23 BJP workers having been
killed by extremist Muslim groups. One of them was even found alive

[Goanet] An appeal to raise my concerns regarding Aadhaar in Winter Session of Parliament

2017-12-13 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Shri Shripad Yesso Naik

I am getting constant messages from my bank and my phone company to link my
Aadhaar number. However, there are daily reports about the shoddy
implementation of Aadhaar and how it is putting my personal information in
danger.

Even with a cursory google search, enough reports about the pitfalls of
Aadhaar are available. From starvation deaths[^1] to exclusion[^2] to
enabling fraud[^3] to mass surveillance[^4], Aadhaar is becoming the basis
for a lot of widespread suffering. There have been data leaks by 210
government entities[^5] putting privacy of citizens like me at risk and
making them vulnerable to identity theft[^6].

As my representative, I request you to raise these issues regarding Aadhaar
in Parliament. I ask you to demand an answer from the Government of the day
as to why I am being forced to register for a flawed system. I demand that
Aadhaar should be made non-mandatory, as the Supreme Court has already
ordered in 2015, and that there should be an opt-out clause allowing those
who don’t want to be a part of the system to get out.

Please go to this link for a draft Rule 193 Notice[^7] with an explanatory
statement asking for a Short Duration discussion on citizen concerns
regarding Aadhaar. You can download any of the notices and file them
according to your convenience.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Frederick Noronha
Saligao.

2017-07-19 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Tuesday and Wednesday (July 18-19, 2017) were rather windy days here in
Goa... Tuesday afternoon particularly saw a lot of storm-like rain. Dunno
if that's the right term, but that's how it hit us. As usual, there don't
seem to have been any warnings of what was in store.

On Monday, the local Met office came out with its weather forecast "for
five days" and said "light to moderate rain/thundershowers is (sic) most
likely to occur at most places over Goa state during (the) next five
days". Of course, this is the monsoons, so it's going to be "light to
moderate rain/thundershowers". That is a vague choice of rain possibilities.

On June 18 (a bit too late), it warned that "winds will be westerly to
south westerly speed 45-50 kmph temporarily reaching 60 kmph in
gust/squall".

For much of the season, we've been having a strange set of rains here, with
short showers of five-minutes rain interspersed with sunny (almost summer)
spells. FN

wanted to do something for a living that he really liked

Carl Rodrigues says that his family and friends all thought he had lost his
mind.

"Everybody thought I had gone completely nuts," he says. "They were saying
'what's wrong with this guy? Is he having a hippy moment?'."

Mr Rodrigues, a successful IT consultant, had woken up one day and decided
to quit the day job.

Instead of doing lucrative work for other people, he was going to retire to
his basement and develop a best-selling computer product.

The significant problem was that he didn't have any ideas. But to the worry
of his wife, and scorn of his mother-in-law - who lived with them - he was
undeterred.

So back in 2001 he shut himself away beneath his house in the Canadian city
of Mississauga, and started to try to dream up something.

"My goal was that I wanted to see what I could produce if I did something I
really liked," he says.

"I didn't know what I was going to do, but I thought I would give it a
shot."

After a month of working "crazy hours", Mr Rodrigues had come up with his
first fully formed idea - a software system that allowed the user to
control his or her mobile phone from their laptop.
[image: Carl Rodrigues]Image copyrightCARL RODRIGUESImage captionMr
Rodrigues squirreled himself away in his basement

Naming his company Soti, sales of the system started to grow slowly, until
12 months later Mr Rodrigues got a phone call out of the blue from one of
the UK's largest supermarket groups.

The firm didn't want to sell the system to its customers, instead it wanted
to incorporate it into its operations, so staff could better communicate
and pass on data and other information.

Mr Rodrigues, now 55 and Soti's chief executive, says: "I was still in my
basement when I got a call from the company, saying they would like to
place an order.

"I don't think they realised that they were talking to just one guy in a
basement, so when the person asked to speak to someone in sales I came back
on the phone with a slightly different tone."

The little ruse worked, and the UK firm placed a "huge order" for 20,000
units.
[image: Man using Soti software]Image copyrightSOTIImage captionThe firm
specialises in mobile technology software systems

Soti has never looked back; and while most people have never heard of the
firm - because it sells its mobile technology software systems to companies
instead of consumers - it today has annual revenues of $80m (£62m).

This is despite Mr Rodrigues not needing any external investment. The
business remains 100% owned by him and his wife.

Continuing to turn down numerous takeover bids, including an undisclosed
offer from Microsoft in 2006, the Canadian business leader instead says he
wants Soti to "become as big as they get" in the computer world.

Born in Pakistan to a Roman Catholic family that had its roots in the
former Portuguese colony of Goa on India's west coast, Mr Rodrigues
emigrated to Canada with his parents and four siblings when he was 11.

The decision to leave Pakistan was Mr Rodrigues' mother's. He says she was
increasingly concerned at political and social instability in the country
in the early 1970s.

He says: "Dad was happy in Pakistan, but mum wanted us kids to have a nice
safe place to grow up in, and have a good education."

captionCarl (the youngest of the two boys) and his family left Pakistan in
the early 1970s

As the family spoke English at home, Mr Rodrigues says he had no problem
settling in Toronto. He even liked the significantly colder weather.

"I was dying to see snow," he says. "This magical thing I had never seen."

After "doing enough at school to go to university", Mr Rodrigues did a
degree in computer science and mathematics at the University of Toronto.

He then spent a number of years working as a consultant, before launching
Soti in 2001.

Today the company is valued at more than $1bn (£770m), and has 17,000
business customers around the world, and 700 employees across 22 countries.

Instead of still being based in Mr Rodrigues' basement, its headquarters is
split across two buildings in Mississauga, which borders Toronto in the
Canadian province of Ontario.

A stitch in time: The Indian roots of Uganda's gomesi

As the tale goes, the gomesi, a traditional dress worn by Ugandan women,
was designed by a Goan tailor

Photo: Nishitha Shrivastava

Her vintage parlour, overlooking the circuitous succulents in the garden,
would fit right into a Dicken’s novel. Photo frames and plaques tell
stories of a life well spent. Joyce Mpanga (84) has been part of Ugandan
politics since the 1960s, a member of Parliament (MP) and deputy
headmistress at the prestigious Gayaza High School. She also travelled to
the US to pursue a master’s degree in education from Indiana University,
Bloomington, in 1961, a path trodden by few.

But what she enjoys most is sharing stories of Ugandan culture. Like the
one about how a pair of Goan tailors changed the social fabric of
Uganda—literally.

“We used to wear a suuka, which was initially made from bark cloth, and
then modified to cotton. It was a piece wrapped around your chest, with
something to cinch it at the waist,” she says.

But in 1905, Mpanga says, when the Church Missionary Society (CMS) started
Gayaza, an all-girl boarding school, the suuka did not find favour with the
missionaries. (Incidentally, the CMS supposedly set up the school after it
started a school for boys in Mengo, Kampala, so that the educated boys
could find educated girls to marry.) And so, the Gomes brothers were called
in to design a uniform—one that would go on to become Uganda's de facto
national dress.

“The school was headed by women who were Victorian. Bare shoulders were
frowned upon. Plus, the suuka would often come undone when the girls did
any physical work. So, the first British headmistress, Alfreda Allen,
called for a Goan tailor, Gomes. They came up with the idea of wearing a
bolero over the suuka. But this was inconvenient too. Then Gomes started
stitching this bolero over the suuka, this is the style we still follow.
The puffed sleeves is a Victorian influence on the dress,” says Mpanga.

It is believed that Allen invited the older of the two Gomes brothers,
Anton Gloria, to discuss the design for the uniform. It was his idea to add
a yoke to the dress, to address the problem of unraveling. Later, the
younger brother, Caetano Milagres, added a sash around the waist, which is
still part of the current design.

The gomesi (also called the busuuti), named after its Goan inventor, today
is very important, both socially and culturally, in Uganda.

“The gomesi is a mark of respect, and must be worn at all social
engagements, such as kwanjula (an introduction ceremony before marriage),
marriage, funeral or even when you are meeting elders in the family,” says
Florence Kiwanuka, speaker at the Parliament of the Buganda Kingdom, adding
that she remembers an introduction ceremony that went awry because a young
girl from the entourage had not worn a gomesi.

Maggi Kigozi, the face of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) for more than a
decade, has slightly different take. The gomesi, stitched up to seven
metres of cloth, isn't the most convenient form of clothing, bordering on
the unmanageable, says Kigozi, clad in one of her bespoke suits (many from
India). Nevertheless, she is extremely proud of her Baganda roots.

“The significance of the gomesi became more pronounced after our kabaka
(king) returned from exile. The dress is beautiful and elegant, and
portrays the African culture. Today, gomesis are better colour-coordinated,
and even have matching buttons and accessories,” says Kigozi.

In addition to the six-odd metres used for the dress, there is an
additional layer forming the base, which is the traditional Ugandan kikoyi
fabric.

Joyce Sebugwawo, mayor of one of five divisions of the Kampala Capital City
Authority, says, “You tie a kikoy, or maybe two, under the gomesi to give
you better shape, since it makes your hips look broader. It is a unique
dress, and a matter of respect in our culture. The process of wearing a
gomesi can be cumbersome, so you have to really believe in your culture to
wear it everyday."

Sebugwawo has worn a gomesi every single day, to work and to every social
gathering, since 1994, because she wanted to "preserve her culture, and
lead by example".

For Celestine Katongole, a lecturer at Makerere University Business School
and founder of Sights & Sounds of Africa Safaris, the gomesi is synonymous
with his mother.

“All her life, from the time I first saw her till she passed on, my mother
wore a gomesi. What is so clear to me, even years after her passing, her
gomesi was our blanket at night for a long time. To me, the gomesi was much
more than just my mother’s dress, it was a source of warmth at night, and a
piece that raised us,” says Katongole.

According to him, not wearing a gomesi is almost considered "indecent" by
some in Ugandan society. However, Katongole also says he's seen a decline
in its popularity, especially among the younger generation.

“As a product, the gomesi could have gone through

wanted to do something for a living that he really liked

[image: Carl Rodrigues and his family]Image copyrightCARL RODRIGUESImage
captionCarl (the youngest of the two boys) and his family left Pakistan in
the early 1970s

Goan diaspora convers its concerns over State to CM

Times News Network

Panaji: The ill-effects of mass tourism, water shortages in
the dry months, unregulated disposal of mining waste and
threat to animal life as a result of unregulated garbage
disposal are among the concerns of the Goan diaspora
presented to chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday
evening.

Edgar Valles, president of Lisbon-based Casa de Goa, an
association of overseas Goans, presented the issues which
were discussed at the recently-concluded international
conference on 'Sustainable development of Goa in the 21st
century'.

Tourism is becoming a major threat to the quality of life for
certain segments of the population. "Deforestation, good
quality agricultural land declassification, absence of
sustainable waste disposal practices all the way to access
impediments to the permanent residents of Goa (for instance,
to public beaches) are among unsustainable practices that are
incumbent on authorities to thwart," states one of the
conclusions.

The association suggests working with Portgual, which has
experience in controlling the negative impact of mass tourism
and promoting promising modes such as agro-tourism.

When the state has 11 reivers with excellent water quality
where the monsoon can satisfy the water consumption of the
state, why should there be tankers supplying water, was
another concern. The paper also highlighted the plastic waste
accumulating and floating in the rivers.

Where Goa's built and intangible heritage is concerned, the
association suggested archiving this as part of a research
project where Goa University and one or more Portuguese
universities could work together.

Tanmay Bhat
Replying to @thetanmay @Olacabs

There is no better hospitality in this country than Goa because there isn't
a more entitled piece of human trash tourist than in goa.

Tanmay Bhat‏
- honestly, I don't see the value in a Curlies now that I'm out of college.
The place is a living breathing bachelor arm pit.

Also - realized half the famous hangouts are still hangouts coz they're
famous. For example Curlies -

- wa more business for a bunch of bats. It is insane how openly the cab
mafia is holding the state random.

It is insane that an @Olacabs doesn't exist in Goa. Almost every night
could've used at least 2/3 Ola trips that would've resulted -

It is insane that we did any travelling before Gmaps existed. Literally
every restaurant or a new hang out took AGES to find earlier.

I went to goa recently after almost a decade and one major thing had
changed

Frederick
Viegas to groom young talent for FC Goa

Dubai-based former Goa and Dempo midfielder relocating after taking up new

Alaric Gomes, Senior Reporter

Dubai: Orlando Viegas, one of the well-known Indian footballers based in
Dubai, is relocating with his new assignment as grassroots development
director with Indian football franchise FC Goa.

As per regulations of the newly launched Indian Super League (ISL), each of
the franchises is supposed to have its own grassroots development
programme. Since February 2015, FC Goa has been reaching out to more than
20,000 children in the 6-12 years age group through their adoption of 17
schools — eight in South Goa and nine in North Goa.

With American Jill Ferguson as CEO of the Forca Goa grassroots development
programme, a dozen coaches have been looking after the grooming of talent
in these 17 schools. From now on, Viegas will be directly spearheading this
development programme with all 12 coaches reporting directly to him.

“One of the main objectives of the Forca Goa grassroots development
programme is to create a base of young players who can play for FC Goa in
the long run,” Viegas told Gulf News in a brief chat.

“My first task in my new role as grassroots development director will be to
bring in this aspect of professionalism in Goan football. From my
experience of so many years I feel our young footballers lack this
direction of being totally professional from a very early age,” Viegas said.

“The focus of course, will always be to impart values that go along with
football to these youngsters,” the midfielder stressed.

Brazilian legend Zico was head coach for FC Goa for the first two seasons,
while Spaniard Sergio Lobera was appointed the new coach earlier this month
along with former Indian international Derrick Pereira as his assistant.

During his stay in Dubai for 17 years, Viegas managed to complete the FA
International Foundation Course offered at the Jebel Ali Centre of
Excellence under the aegis of the English FA’s It’s Just Football. The
course is delivered by a qualified coach from the FA and features practical
and theory elements on the basics of coaching in football. Earlier this
year, Viegas also completed his AIFF D-Licence Course in Goa.

“I am passionate about football and I want to give something back to sport.
Dubai has given me and my family — wife Hylette and children Hayden and
Hayley — a good quality of life. Being in Dubai has definitely been the
best part of my life. But I need to move on,” he said.

“If I was shifting to a different country then things would have been
different. But I am going back home with a grand challenge before me. And I
am confident of doing my best with this new challenge,” Viegas added.

Re: [Goanet] LIBERATION, INVASION, ETC: On 17th December 1961

2017-06-26 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
I agree that the term "Liberation" is lazy shorthand to cover-up a whole
lot of issues and concerns. It is probably a cut-and-paste job from
post-World War II See Europe.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/sep/10/second-world-war-liberation-europe

But to judge five-and-half decades of social change (positive, negative and
neither-here-no-there) by whether corriander leaves get washed in some
gutter, and dragging in someone's name into the debate, doesn't make too
much sens eto me.

It only shows the narrowness of our discussion skills.

A PORTUGUESE WRITER IN GOA, 18TH CENTURY: Manuel Maria

poet, writing at the beginning of his career under the pen
name Elmano Sadino. Via the Goa-Research-Net
[http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-research-net] scholar
Susana Sardo [ssa...@ua.pt] reminds us that Bocage also spent
some of his time in Goa, though probably not very happily!
See the Wikipedia page: "n 1786 he was appointed
guarda-marinha in the Portuguese India navy, and he reached
Goa by way of the colony of Brazil in October. There he came
into an ignorant society full of petty intrigue, where his
particular talents found no scope to display themselves; the
glamour of the East left him unmoved and the climate brought
on a serious illness. In these circumstances he compared the
heroic traditions of Portugal in Asia, which had induced him
to leave home, with the reality, and wrote his satirical
sonnets on The Decadence of the Portuguese Empire in Asia,
and those addressed to Afonso de Albuquerque and D. João de
Castro. The irritation caused by these satires, together with
rivalries in love affairs, made it advisable for him to leave
Goa, and early in 1789 he obtained the post of lieutenant of
the infantry company at Damão, India; but he promptly
deserted and made his way to Macau, where he arrived in
July–August. According to a modern tradition much of the "Os
Lusíadas" had been written there, and Bocage probably
travelled to China under the influence of another classic
Portuguese poet, Luís de Camões, to whose life and
misfortunes he loved to compare his own. Though he escaped
the penalty of his desertion, he had no resources and lived
on friends, whose help enabled him to return to Lisbon in the
middle of the following year."
