Re: [Goanet] Holland considers saree ban
Sachin, I wear my salwaar kameez through the entire summer of New England and I have seen many women in saris and salwaars at conferences in the USA giving presentations and attending talks. As long as the weather permits we love to wear our beautiful and very comfortable clothes and my colleagues love them too. On a very recent trip to Goa to attend a meeting the delegates almost emptied the boutiques of Panjim in their frenzy to buy Indian clothes. Many of them wore their salwaars through the rest of the meeting. Its the privileged of an Indian woman to be able to wear so many outfits! I think its a lack of understanding of our culture that makes that these politicians 'rush to our rescue' even though we have no need for them. Please - India Gandhi wore a sari and it did not inhibit her physically or mentally! It would be in the interest of these politicians to inculcate some dress code into some of the tourists who to quote the late Principal of my Verna school look like 'they slept with the dukor.' Helga do Rosario Gomes I am sure that there are some women from Goa on this net who wear a saree in the public at least some of the time. What do they have to say on the subject? Sachin Phadte. Why would I think so? Large quantities of pesticides in ground water are a consequence of an over zealous green revolution. Another consequence of this green revolution is the high levels of nitrate and phosphate which have been added to coastal waters of the west coast of India and which have caused severe eutrophication at mid depth. There is evidence that an already existing O2 minimum zone may be increasing. The statement that the conclusions seem to be non biased and scientifically sound is debatable! What would you debate about this statement? I could pass on your comments to my friend and he will certainly address them. Hi Sunith, I am aware of the fact that the Peres ladies did not restore the house but it must have been no mean feat to keep it going. I should rephrase my previous post to say that unlike many of their relatives I am glad that they had the finesse to not raze it to the ground to make way one another concrete monstrosity and to satiate the greed of our builders. I am also glad that Varun Sood and many others are preserving our beautiful heritage for future generations. Regards Helga Dear Helga, It was not the Peres ladies who preserved that house but an enterprising NRI-return Mr. Varun Sood. The house in question was falling apart and abandoned before he bought it. He also owns a wonderful boutique hotel called Siolim House. our architectural heritage and makes loads of money at the same time. Rest assured that there are more old Goan houses serving as hotels than there are havelis in Jaipur. ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
Re: [Goanet] Take leaf from my book, in fact take two!
No pain no gain. CP: Ouch! That hurt! I see no logic to this - why can't I coin my own terms which have even been documented in cyberspace? You and others don't have to use them. CP: Is Roland a Canadian Goan? Only Canadian Goans can decide how they wish to be addressed. Neither you or me can interfere in this matter. And where would your crook Aldona representative be? Right next to Laloo? CP: I totally agree with you that Shastikars are more full blooded. If being 'full bloodied' was all that counted then there would be no debate and Mickey Pacheco should be appointed CM of Goa for life. And the Alemao brothers permanently represent us in Parliament. I guess you will have to ask someone why I referred to leaves vis a vis the Opinion Poll! There are no statesmen or women worthy of even a radioactive medal in any part of Goa NOW but I think there were then. And you were talking of Bardez vs Salcete not Aldona vs Curtorim. Why would I study in North Goa? There are schools where I lived and good ones too! What is the calibre of the current crop of South Goan politicians. Other than Eduardo Faleiro is there anyone who can be called a statesman worthy of respect? And while you do your research for our planned war of words please check what was the percentage voting in Aldona constituency during the historic Opinion Poll. As Fred pointed out earlier, our education often decides what we become. Did you by any chance study in North Goa, Helga? ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
Re: [Goanet] Archives, patties, matka, cleavage - and the Salcete divide
I guess that two years ago I started the Apologetic Sausages and Incense discussion which like most of my other discussions I did not pursue tenaciously for lack of time or total loss of interest. But Cecil you have not squashed Gonadian - I have concrete prove that its around and now Roland might even start a Confraria! Good for you Roland! If you really want a Bardezkar-Shastikar war and who is the full bloodied Goan of the two then you should dig up the archives and find out the Opinion Poll results! I mean my teacher Hazel had come to work in a dress with a leaf pattern (beige background with green and brown leaves!) and in the craft class we were all embroidering table mats with the shapes of leaves - once again beige with brown. Mine like my discussions is still incomplete! Let's see you top that! I am not very familiar with Flickr but I think they can view pictures of Goa with just one tag? Or there is some kind of search process? Hi Fred, I looked at your photos and they are great - National Geog. standard! You guys should know that Smithsonian Magazine has a competition every year with categories like People, Nature etc. In the meantime it would be great if we could come up with a common tag for your and JoeUK's excellent photos so goanetters and their friends could browse and decide what they want to do and see in Goa. Otherwise everyone ends up at the same old places! You once sent an email with suggestions of small restaurants especially in the Novas Conquistas. I cant find the email now although I though I saved it. Also while we are on the subject VM de Malar published some great articles in Time Out Mumbai (Dec 2005 issue) which recommend some excellent restaurants (even a Burmese one) and historic sites like the little known Croatian chapel in Cumbarjua which I visited quite by chance for a funeral. How do you get this issue of Time Out? Good Question! Let's leave it to Fred and VM! Helga Great idea, Helga. We could decide on some common tags. And then suitably change those for whoever wants to join in. We could also build a photolist on Flickr. Maybe we could call it *Goanet*, to make the network identifiable among people connected with Goanet. Hey Mario, Before we waste any more key strokes you would have to define what Canadians or Americans are as opposed to the guests or the pseudo-Canadians/ Americans. HRG However, if they have emigrated temporarily then maintaining their Goaness not only makes sense, but not to do so would be ridiculous. Their Canadian and American neighbors would know and respect those feelings, and treat them like the guests they are and not like pseudo-Canadians or Americans. There would be no expectation of being accepted in this case and far less angst all around. ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

Hi Ben, Would it make you feel better if I told you there are Knights of this order? Check out http://gonadianknights.com/ Seems like my post has spawned two parallel discussions - not bad for an etymologically challenged oceanographer! Now that you have commented on the major one (i.e. should Goan Canadians be Gonadians or plain Canadians which is what Mario wants you guys to be) would you care to comment on the minor? Oddly or perhaps because I lack a grasp of the English language I thought it was the other way around? Helga But Gonadian? Ugh! The coinage betrays an abysmal lack of understanding of ethymology and how the English language works. I was shocked to read her piece. Best regards.
