Chief minister Manohar Parrikar had recently said that Matanhy was in favour of Mopa airport. Even if the two (Matanhy and Parrikar) did speak about the Mopa issue, she was not aware of what transpired during the conversation, she said in a statement. Further, she said that Parrikar had clearly stated on the floor of the house that he had not stated that Matanhy supported Mopa. Matanhy was totally focused on the Dabolim airport issue, which he firmly believed was a civilian airport and the Navy was in illegal possession of the same. Matanhy had repeatedly said that he had ample documentary evidence to prove that Dabolim airport is a civilian airport, Saldanha said. She explained that the evidence comprised gazette notifications right from the time of acquisition of land for the construction of the airport in Dabolim during the pre-liberation colonial rule to the evidence that the Indian defence authorities themselves considered the Dabolim airport to be a civilian airport. This is in a copy of the minutes of the meeting of board of officers, held on 19/02/1962, at Panjim, under Lt Col Arjinder Singh, Commanding Officer of 17 Para AD RGTT, duly approved by the then military governor of Goa, Major General K P Kandeth, which clearly stated that the airport at Dabolim was a civil government property, she pointed out. This is a post liberation document whose authenticity cannot be challenged, she asserted. Saldanha said that the naval authorities should take cognizance of these facts and vacate Dabolim airport which they illegally occupied. In view of the above, the question of late Matanhy having supported Mopa does not arise. She urged the people to vigorously pursue the demand to revert Dabolim airport to the civilian authorities. tnn http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Matanhy-opposed-Mopa-airport-Alina/articleshow/19485801.cms joego...@yahoo.co.uk COMMENTS: I LOVE MY GOA NO TO MOPA YES TO DR. What I mostly remember reading about MS over the years was how he had turned into an opportunist once he entered politics and how he was a major disappointment to people who had high hopes for him after the Ramponkar struggle and the Metastrips agitation. The author's admission that any person like him who responds to a Goanet post addressed to someone else, does so, because the message in it hit home to him whom the cap fits. This confirms the fact that the following message of mine in a prior post hit home perfectly, and the cap fitted the right person, as indicated by the author's irritated response to it: QUOTE There is no dearth of young activists. I cannot understand why any non-activist or genuine public interest activist would be so offended by my earlier comment as to lash out against me specifically in a public forum for not being an activist by profession. Why is it wrong to not be a political activist, and be a teacher instead? Those who teach are doing a great public service. George Pinto to whom my comment was addressed, and who agreed with it, is already leading by example. He is spearheading a wonderful selfless effort that fosters the progress of, and justice for, all Goans, and not just some selective parochial religious, ideological or sectarian interest group. The name of this effort is Goa Sudharop. Please see: http://www.goasudharop.org/ Those who have supported various causes through this organization have done their own small part in promoting a positive and unifying form of activism, of the type whose dearth I was lamenting in my earlier comment. Re: [Goanet] Matanhy - The Activist
Matanhy Saldanha - The last of the idealists - by Edwin Pinto To me, the passing away of Matanhy Saldanha certainly signifies the end of an era for Goa and Goans. For Matanhy, in a manner of speaking, was the last of the idealists - that rare breed of activists who walked a tortuous path through long seasons of uncertainty and turbulence as they struggled with unwavering commitment against a government and a system skilfully configured and heavily weighted against the people and the land. It was during the Anti Meta Strips campaign in the year 2000 that we first came in contact with Matanhy Saldanha. This was one of Goa's more intense convulsions, where the surging anger of the people resulted in head on confrontations between them and an intransigent government who tried to suppress the movement through the use of state machinery. Needless to say, movements of this magnitude certainly do not leave time for genteel nurturing of relationships. We were thrown together - people living in the affected villages around the factory, clueless, but full of good intentions - never, ever envisaging where our campaign would lead us. It was Matanhy who took charge, explaining, encouraging, motivating and guiding us through the various stages of this tumultuous movement and putting steel in our spines when the chips were down. In fact, he led from the front, imbuing a group of ordinary villagers who were total novices to such campaigns, with the unbelievable ability to withstand a thirteen day fast that brought the government of the day to its knees, compelling it to close down the factory, even though it proved later to be a temporary measure. For Matanhy, the land and the environment were sacred community resources, to be used for the collective good. He loved Goa with an intense passion and willingly sacrificed many other dimensions of his life for his beloved motherland. Matanhy did not believe in spit, polish and sophistication. He was a votary of people's empowerment, clearly understanding that any movement, however worthy, which was not fuelled with the energy of people at grassroots level, was bound to experience extreme difficulties in fulfilling its goal. He was therefore driven to shape a community that he hoped would be alert, empowered and vigilant. For he firmly believed that such a community would ultimately form Goa's most impervious defence against the machinations of vested interests. In our very many interactions and discussions with Matanhy, some admittedly heated and tempestuous, we gained an insight into the depths of his personality. He had a enviably sharp intellect, that could analyse any situation thoroughly and grasp its very essence. His world view and understanding of environmental issues, enabled him to come out with quick and well thought out questions and responses to ill considered government policies and laws imposed on the state, that have undoubtedly saved Goa from even worse degradation than that it is experiencing presently. He lived with the courage of his convictions, strongly believing that laws were made for people and not the other way around. Hence he staunchly defended the rights of fishermen to enjoy their traditional habitations within the CRZ zone. Matanhy, more than most, understood the near impossibility of fighting against a state equipped with the might of the system. With limited resources at his command, he relied on his intellect, his sharp understanding of the system's modus operandi, but most of all on the support of the ordinary people, whose roots in the land he believed, gave them a better feeling and perspective of the problems. He understood how important it was for a community to preserve its special identity, even as it fused with the peoples who made up the rest of the nation Even when most of us at some stage got caught up in the problems and situations of our own lives, we could always rest in the assurance that Matanhy was always on the job, unceasingly watchful, always on guard as he looked out for his beloved Goa and Goans. Right from the early days of the legendary Ramponkar's Movement that toppled a mighty government, to the Konkan Railway, SEZ, and any major environmental issue that rocked Goa, Matanhy was a household name - synonymous with Goa and Goan issues. It is indeed a tragic irony of fate that he won this election, was given charge of Ministries close to his heart in a Government that was unhampered by the constraints of coalition politics, only to be called away before fulfilling his destiny. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

Re: [Goanet] Matanhy and BJP
Dear Marshall, I read your comments to my article on goanet and your fears as stated are perfectly understandable. Goans must throw the anti Goan and absolutely corrupt Congress Party out of power, atleast for this term. It is foolish argument that Corruption is a lesser evil than Communalism because Corruption destroys the very heart and soul of a society and affects everybody. Communalism can be dealt in Goa by bringing about unity between both Hindu and the Christian communities. More Catholic representation in the BJP will change the political compulsions and bring about unity among Goans wich is very vital for our survival. The real danger is the polarisation of the two major communities. The Christians are fast receding in numbers and if we don't unite now, Goans will be outnumbered and wiped out like the east indians. The corrupt Congress has used the 'secular' card effectively to its advantage. With no love for the BJP, during the last BJP government (which didnt last the full term), 11.8 % jobs were given to the christian community whereas this secular Congress Government led by Digambar Kamat with so many christian ministers, only 8.5% jobs went to the Christian community. Leaving aside Matanhy's achievements, his honesty and integrity are unquestionable. He is visionary and a lone crusader who has selflessly fought for Goa's causes over the years. I assure you Matanhy will have a voice where ever he is, and the BJP in Goa will listen to him. If Goans have not recognised Matanhy Saldanha, so be it, but definitely this man does not deserve to be despised nor attacked. Mog assom, Geraldo Oliveira -- On Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 12:00 AM, Geraldo Oliveira niger...@yahoo.com wrote: Matanhy and BJP As expected, Matanhy’s door to door campaign has been carefully scrutinized and critics will always see his joining hands with BJP, an excuse to paint him with the saffron brush. Most of the the present Congress MLAs have at some point in time, had close ties with the BJP, but our ‘secularist’ will choose not to make a mention. They will rather hype on the 10 years old controversial CD and Good Friday issue, than the most recent closing ceremony of IFFI deliberately scheduled on the feast of Goencho Saib by ‘secular’ Congress headed by Digubab. Interestingly, every scam of the Congress government whether it is illegal Mining, Regional plan, SEZ, Cidade de Goa ordinance etc., is brushed under the carpet during elections by the so called ‘secularist’. It is true that, Matanhy joining the BJP has sent shivers in the Congress ranks and upset the so called secularist, but Goans at large must welcome this as a very positive and prudent move that can bring about unity between both Christian and Hindu communities, which till date remain polarised as a result of years of Congress misrule. While the Congress has plundered and sold Goa, it’s Party chief Sonia Gandhi has lied to the electorate at the last election on Special status and now, has unleashed the same bunch of powerful thieves along with their families to consolidate their territories for the final assault on mother Goa. On the other hand, the BJP has atleast acknowledged mistakes of the past and with more representatives of the Catholic community joining its ranks, will have to rethink its attitude towards the minority community, which is positive for Goa. It is stupid to even think that Matanhy will embrace RSS ideology or blindly follow any ill conceived policies of the Party as alleged by some. Matanhy is a shrewd man with a strong mind of his own, capable of influencing others towards his own vision for Goa. Goa stands a much better chance to bring about a Lokayukta and even Special Status under BJP than under any Congress Government which is totally anti Goan. Our good friend Rupert Coutinho has censured Matanhy, and with a long list of questions, but one can condone his ignorance of Matanhy’s achievements, both as an activist and as a politician over the last 40 years. Just to point out one example : SEZ in Goa was stopped only when Matanhy gave an ultimatum to the Digamber Kamat led Government not so long ago. It has always been Matanhy’s style not to trumpet his achievements, but it is time to make known that Matanhy opposed tooth and nail the idea of cancelation of Good Friday and many other policy decisions when he was part of the BJP Government. Mr. Coutinho being in UAE is unaware that Matanhy has joined the BJP on the advice of his supporters in Cortalim constituency which itself speaks volumes of grassroot support and development in the area during his tenure. Anybody can book Matanhy for sins of omission, but not for corruption and opportunism as alleged by Rupert Coutinho and if that was the case, Matanhy could have easily joined the Congress years ago,

JC Response: [A] I sincerely hope Matanhy or his lackey will clarify the following: a: the number of individuals from Cortalim constituency who advised Matanhy to join the BJP b: how he knew (for sure) that they were his supporters before he joined the BJP . and not BJP supporters. Personally speaking, I am very happy that Matanhy finally came out of the closet and joined the BJP. [B] I also wish to disagree with a few notions put out here: c: that, in a democracy, the janta must follow the leader; that they follow him/her after voting for him/her ... is another matter. d: that anyone is 'born a leader'; though I know for sure that every person, is born digambara. I hope that if Manohar's slate does pull off a victory (and I am not at all sure that they will), the mistakes he made in the past will not be repeated. He faces an uphill task. For any effective governance he will have to get a clear majority, without any looming threat of blackmail from one or two fellows, as happens in any coalition these days. That is a tall order. Note that right now all one can hope for Goa is to slow down its 'slumification.' The Goa we knew and loved is gone. On 13 February 2012 15:03, Geraldo Oliveira niger...@yahoo.com wrote [1] one can easily conclude that a Parrikar government with Matanhy in its ranks will be far better than any Congress combination to govern Goa for the next 5 years [2] They (the secularists) will rather hype on the 10 years old controversial CD and Good Friday issue, than the most recent closing ceremony of IFFI deliberately scheduled on the feast of Goencho Saib by ‘secular’ Congress headed by Digubab [3] (There is another post from a Gerald Oliveira ? same ? different as Geraldo Oliveira ) http://valpoi.blogspot.com/2011/04/prophets-of-doom-by-gerald-oliveira.html COMMENT: Preface: I believe that Manohar Parrikar (never mind his asinine silly doing porn' remark) is the best individual among the present lot in the Goa Assembly. There is NO contest about that. Unfortunately, Manohar Parrikar has his apron strings tied to the RSS and BJP. I trust those two outfits as much as I trust the Kangress. I also believe that Matanhy Saldanha has every right to choose which party he wishes to join. Personally - for the past 10 years - I strongly believed that he was a BJP. I am glad that he has finally been honest enough to come out of the closet. a: I am not sure HOW Gerald Oliveira comes to the conclusion in #1. Better based on what? Past record or present mouthings? b: re #2, I do not know the meanings of the partisan talking point i.e. Secularist .and its cousin pseudo-secularistbut I'd say this to Gerald . The VideoCD stuff was NO simple matter. If you have seen the CD like I have, you (possibly) would have been aghast at the vicious (albeit clever) attack on Christianity and Christians contained therein. The 'Good Friday' issue IMHO is a non-issue. Religion has NO place in public service. If the Church wishes to have a service for Govt workers during working days, it should do so after working hours. The Govt is NOT obligated to declare holidays when Govt work is yet to be done. Those who want to attend religious functions on working days, should take Vacation or Unpaid leave on those days. What is the sense of giving Holidays to a set of people who are perpetually on Holiday anyway? I would support Parrikar if he cancelled ALL religious holidays for Govt servants. The Good Friday issue (a personal worship issue) is quite different from the disgustingly devious and communally divisive issue created by the VCD. Let us not even begin to confuse the two. Apologies would be a good start but not really enough. There must be a firm commitment NEVER to repeat that nonsense again. AND, none of the stuff seen in the attached URLs 1 2 (See foot of this post) re #3: This article makes interesting reading. What Geraldo Oliveira is suggesting, I believe, that One set of Delhi controls be replaced by another. Wonder what Gerald Oliveira has to say about that. jc refs: 1: http://tinyurl.com/MaraNari1 2: http://tinyurl.com/MaraNari2 Matanhy may wish to review this post on this Valentine's Day 3: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7880377.stm --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
Re: [Goanet] Matanhy et 'Overseas citizen have no right'
Dear Friends, We must thank Matanhy for expressing his concerns for OCIs. What comes to my mind is, by granting OCI status to persons of Indian origin, Government of India has brought on record those who have relinquished Indian citizenship. This will enable the Government to check their holdings back home as many Indians especially Goans still own properties in India. Like Tenancy Act, who knows what future legislation may curtail further rights of OCIs, time alone will tell. Its worth taking Matanhy's advice on board. The question of Anjedevi island should be asked to, Dr. Wilfred Desouza, Luisinho Faleiro, and Francisco Sardinha, as they were in the government enjoying plum cabinet posts, at the time when Ravi Naik was the chief mininster. Eduardo Faleiro equally to be blamed for he was in top position of power in Delhi. Matanhy was the General Secretary of Gomant Lok Pokx and I know he was the only voice (see New reports/press statements) against the gifting away of Anjedivi island to the Navy, while all of Goa slept in slumber. Matanhy has devoted his entire life to Goa's cause, but find it difficult to understand that his 'ommissions' are being questioned by critics, in a copy book style, while none of the above mentioned Congress 'christaos' who ruled Goa for 30 odd years are held accountable for the sorry state of affairs. Mr. Saldanha appeals to every Goan and all those who love Goa to to support this demand, irrespective of caste, religion and political affiliation, in order to protect the interest of the people of Goa, for today and for the generations to come... Perhaps it would have been helpful if Mr. Saldanha had indicated to which politicians and political entites, concerned Goans should address their demand for autonomy - Original Message - From: Rajan P. Mogall Shridhar-bab, This is not the first of Rajan Parrikar's postings that I have copied for the attention of the GBA Core Group. I am as aware of Rajan's leanings towards Manohar Parrikar as I am of your leanings towards Digambar-bab via my friend Datta D. Naik of the Third Millenium. If the cat shuts its eyes while it is slurping the cream, it is not as if the whole world turns blind! Rumours had it that Digu-bab hit an Australian jack-pot while he moved from Jaipur to Delhi in January, 2005. Are you saying that Matanhy-bab also got a share to keep quiet? I am not a Salesian product and never did study in Don Bosco. To Matanhy's credit I will only say so much: he got elected on an UGDP ticket and stood with that party for ALL THE FIVE YEARS. He served in only ONE GOVENMENT and, when it fell, sat in the opposition. Shridhar, can you say as much for the man in whose official residence you were early this morning ? Rajan Parrikar has asked a question about that , too. I come from a Jesuit school that has for its motto three simple words DEEDS NOT WORDS. These words are difficult for turncoats with hidden agendas to understand. Whether it is Modi or Hal-Kannadi you know it best. Roman script is enough for me! ;-)) Mog asundi. Dr. Oscar Rebello and his GBA troops will do well to commit every word in it to memory as they go about crafting the new Regional Plan. The NT website hasn't been updated yet so no links are available. Matanhy-bab has detailed clauses and guidelines for approaching the new Regional Plan. He has questioned the indiscriminate increase in settlement area in the last Plan - reading between the lines, it simply means that our planners have been planning not for Goans but for bhailes (outsiders). Matanhy-bab, my dear old teacher at Don Bosco, hats off to you man. We knew even then, 30 years ago, the stuff you are made of.
