There was a serious infrastructure issue in two datacenters (simultaneously!) that caused svn service to be read-only for a bit. My reckoning is that this got sorted more than 24 hours ago (and many people report that we're back), but it seems like some people are still not able to commit to some repositories? The projects that contain only malware-infested binaries are immediately taken down, but their contents remain for at least 90 days in case we receive an appeal. I'm talking about projects that are clearly malicious: their project descriptions are nonsense, they have no source code commits (here or anywhere else, e.g., Github), they have no issues, and they have no wiki pages. 3. The projects that appear to be legitimate aren't necessarily taken down immediately. One of us usually notifies the project owner(s) and gives them a bit of time to clean house. If the malware is particularly nefarious, we may have to take it down immediately, but we'll still notify the owner(s). 4. We see dozens or hundreds of projects in category (2) for every one in category (3). 5. If your project is taken down, send us email (here or at any of our other mailing lists), and we'll see what's going on. Your project's contents are safe for at least 90 days after a takedown. I use google code as the sole repository for my open source app but start thinking about having a independent repository such as github mirroring it. We encourage you to preserve your code however you like. I have contacted the project owner who claims to have closed the project rather than handing it over. I have been waiting for the time (I understand 1 month) it takes for a project to become free, but it has now been longer than that and the project title is still unavailable. How long has the project lay fallow? If less than 6 months, don't be optimistic about being assigned ownership of the project. There has never been code in the project. Is there something fishy about the circumstances of the request? I don't think so. Is there code in that project? Not that I saw the last time it was visible. Is the project scheduled for deletion? If so, we'll likely just give it to you. Yes. Is the project you wish to take over a spam trap or hosting malware or simply not open source? The project is an open source (GPL3) bioinformatics library currently hosted at github.com/kortschak/biogo Have you made an effort in good faith to contact the current owners? Yes. What, if anything, did they have to say in reply? They say they deleted the project. Has one of the original developers died or otherwise dropped off the grid in some fashion that you can describe to us? Not as far as I can see dev name pingjie on twitter, fb etc all active. Gross. I've seen an error like this once before, and it meant that an old revision in your repository got corrupted in at least one datacenter but not others. We can fix it, but it requires considerable manual work, and there is a non-zero risk of doing further damage.
