When I kept pushing the issue (I had GTS'er that wanted 80 units at least) they said that if I came up with a very large non-refundable deposit, they would build it. But the unit price cost was closing in on $90 each at least, so that would be $180 for a pair. At that price, very few people would buy it, since the stock filter can be had for about $25 or less. The Amsoil filter guys knew that demand would fall as the price rose, which was why the business office wanted the deposit. In the end, the entire deal fell through back in April. The bigger problem is more my fault, in that I did not communicate the progress of the air filter with the rest of the GTS list. I want to apologize to anyone who was inconvenienced by me, perhaps delaying the purchase of filters in hopes of the reusable one becoming available. My life has been a real hell lately due to my job. My company is getting ready to go public, and everybody is working 80 hour weeks either building our products, designing the companion software and factory automation/ERP (enterprise resource planning) software (software is my area), or dealing with the financial end. So my entire life is centered around my job, to the detriment of my family and social life. So basically, I want to apologize to the GTS list about my inability to get AMSOIL to build the air filter, and hope you will forgive me and still allow me to participate on the list. And I owe you Richard a big favor, because you sent me the sample filter, spent YOUR money and your time to package it and send it to me. I am trying to figure out a way to repay the favor, if you have any suggestions, please let me know. The government does good things and bad things. Requiring that everyone have special insurance for any activity that they do, makes no sense. It makes a lot of sense if you are an insurance company and you have the lobbying power to get politicians to see things your way! They very much know that riders are no greater a risk so they will be glad to have us legislatively be forced to pay insurance premiums. It all makes a great deal of economic sensefor them. Also, found out today that Blue Cross Blue Shield is THE ONLY insurance company in my area that "IS ALLOWED BY LAW" to cover our company's and other companies I suspect medical needs. How's that for monopoly! I hate to admit it but Hillary's sounding better all of a sudden, so as to put a leash on these thieves. I was late getting into Texas because I missed my flight our of OK City. The business discussions dragged on a little too long, but the guy I was with felt bad and drove me down. What a small world the Internet makes...while doing the deal in the show room, I bought the bike from the owner, a guy walked up and sat on the GTS. The guy I'm with asks, jokingly, if he would like to buy it. Then this stranger starts to carry on about knowing all about me and the GTS deal. The mechanic and the guy with me look stupified as he talks; like, are you world famous John..:) Then the stranger explains about the LDR list...:) The ride home from Texas to St. Augustine was a good chance to get acquainted with the GTS. It is a lot different than the FJS..it is much more finely engineered and advanced compared to the old FJ to make it concise. Getting off the FJ and onto the GTS and then riding 1200 plus miles in less than a day, the differences become extremely focused in the mind. The RADD front end is outstanding. On the FJ, when riding in anything loose or unstable, I had virtually no control. It took all my skills just to keep the bike up right on a gravel road. The FJ wouldn't steer, simply plow. Riding down the unfinished road leading into my sister place in Texas was a nice shock. I had to carefully pick my spot when I rode the FJ, in fact, I went down a few months earlier on the FJ when it hit a soft wet grass area and slid out from underneath meSwith this GTS, it is like being on a dirt bike. It has no tendency to slid or move on unstable ground. The same feeling with the GTS transfers to hard ground and in cornersS.it is on rails. It inspires confidence in all riding conditions. It is no light weight at just over 600 lbs wet, but that heaviness disappears once the bike is moving. It feels like you can touch either side of the bike down in the tight stuff without giving it a second thought because it feels so well planted. The ride is extremely plush with little being transmitted back through the handlebars. The power is there, but it doesn't have that surge at seven grand, like the FJ. It just revs and revs like an electric motor. Very smooth, but still has a lot of grunt. You can leave it in top gear and pull all the way from 1500 rpm without a hic-up. On the same ride and at the same speeds, 80 to 90 mph average, on the ride back from Texas, the FJ would have given me around 30 mpg. Roger always told me how good his gas mileage was and I used to thinkSyeah! But this EFI system on the Yamaha is something else. At the same speedo speeds, and by the speed I was passing traffic, the speedo is probably about 5% off, like the FJ, I got outstanding mileage. I average 44 to 47 mpg on 5 tank fill ups. It dropped to 44 mpg when I was able to hold the speed closer to 90. I couldn't believe it. What a nice surprise, I almost don't need to put on an aux tank compared to the FJ. Just short of 200 miles the low fuel light comes on and I fill it up with 4 gallons. There is a guy on the GTS list that is a metal worker and who can bump out the stock tank to over seven gallons and still fit it under the plastic. That may be the sensible way to go for LD riding on this thing. In shortSI think I have a keeper in this bike, even if Yamaha brings out a light weight tourer. I'll just have to get a bigger garage." hawke

Newer ? Yes ...Better..., aahhh well They tested the tire with different bikes in germany. More grip, yes. But the "old" BT 57 has much more grip under wet conditions. I am assuming from looking at the underside of the head light that the two small bolts sticking down under the headlight module are the ones to turn. Which direction and which one for vertical and horizontal adjustment...standing in front of the bike and facing the headlight? hawke

As the third web presence of the GTS (Mike Weaver the elusive Peter K. predate me), welcome aboard. I've been remiss in updating my site over the past couple of years. Working riding have come first, and back then there were many fewer GTSers on the net. It took forever to get 20 owners on the Owners list, that was a magical number for me, now there are over 300. I started the mailing list and was happy to have Mike Weaver take it over when my provider started charging me monthly for it. Not only that it was starting to consume too much time administeriing. I concentrated on the Owners List the website after that. I've stumbled recently with the owners list because of other priorities, and the website has been behind that. Brandon, if you're up to it and gung ho, I give you permission to rape pillage my website to put it into the .org site I'll close down my "general" gts site and keep two of my babies try to maintain them. The owners list and the bibliography of publications I've spent a lot of time developing. gts.org would of course link directly to them for the definative world owners list and english bibliography. I'd like to thank all the people that have contributed to my site over the years and apologize ;) for bushwacking people into making contributions... Don McClellan for his great overview, Gen Kanai for his suspension university paper, Mike for taking over the list (thanks Mike, I think I got the best of that deal), Kelly Cash for a guy so amazing to keep minute records of his gas log, Koji Sakata my friend from Japan, Rob Chapman for sending me some original documentation from Australia. Hi all: I've been lurking for a while, but thought I should intorduce myself. Just "activated" my 93 GTS after selling my 96 CBR1000F. I've had the GTS since 1998, but haven't ridden it much as the CBR was my main bike. Didn't want to ride the GTS as it's too unusual, but since I, ahem, have all those speeding tickets, no point in insuring too many bikes. Hope I can keep the GTS upright (no problem so far) as it would be a shame to turn a work of art like the GTS into a rough-and-tumble scratcher like my CBR was. Besides, a guy can have too many bikes, right? Brad, we should ride some time. I live near brainerd, but get to the cities pretty often. Any other TC listers? Any TC'ers have their ABS taken care of? I have a call in to trackstar, but they haven't gotten hold of Yamaha yet, so no appointment to get it done. Will have them do the valves when I'm in. I had them tune an '81 Seca a while back, and liked the work. Nice guys, and I get to look at the Guzzis and Laverdas whilst I wait, but I've heard good things about Hitchin Post, too. Good Luck, my headlight has sucked since the day I bought my GTS. I even had the dealer replace the whole assembly under warranty just after I got the bike. It still sucks. I didn't ride much at night because of it. I got a set of Piaa 1200 and they make up for it now. But without them I'm in the dark! This is the only true bitch I have about this machine after having put almost 60K on it. headlight cover
I'll past this on because sometime back someone else was looking for a plastic headlight cover. I would say for now this is a temporary fix that might be of use for those on a trip. It started when I replaced the snap on type face shield for a 3/4 helmet. Seems with a little trimming that was done with all things a good pair of Gensu scissors. Seems that the only tuff part is the thick rib at the bottom of the shield which I used as the bottom of this cover. I trimmed down a page out of a newspaper and taped it in place. With a grease pen traced the outline of the headlight to use as template. I used some velcro that I had laying around that is 1 inch wide and cut it to fit the full length of the outside of the headlight. I didn't cut the shield to over lap onto the plastic fairing to avoid blemishing the paint with the sticky adhesive of the velcro. This velcro I got handed down by a friend that owns an auto body shop. I think you could get this stuff at a hobby shop and not have to by a big roll from an auto supply store. If it comes off then it was a good experiment and so far costs nothing. Can be replaced with possibly one that will be not so irregular the next time I need to cut another. Might not stop a good size rock. But might keep those little ones from making a crack that would later spell doom for the wallet on a new headlight lens. Would be on the look out for a thicker type plastic like an old windshield from a Harley or such. Seems that some Goldwingers have about the same size and shape that would fit a GTS. Anybody else out there tried a GW headlight cover? I know some of you must have a neat trick to use other than this. Apparently have deleted the email that had info on headlight covers in the past. ps just read the headlight adjustment I have no idea. Subject was good timing. Ken Swartz

You know, even as I was reading Robert's post, I felt like I was at a "Lifetime Achievement Award" ceremony and actually started to get a little misty eyed. It almost sounded as if Robert was trying to retire from the group, but of course, we won't have ANY of that. (See end of message.) I've only been on this list for the last 3+ years, but man, what a bunch of good natured, good humor, helpful group of riders. (Ok, people. Who happen to ride bikes. Really cool bikes.) I agree about the poor light output.I also have a Ventura light lid (rock guard) and the factory fairing bra that has a nylon mesh over the headlight area.Both of those combined also restrict the light.I don't like riding at night either ,when I do the Piaa's are mandatory. Just remember, the light adjustment labeling of the screws in the manual is backwards or reversed of what it really is.Chris -94 blue.

Comments. hawke below is a reprint of my comments on the ride to a friend: "The guy I bought the bike from is a Honda mechanic in the Plano Texas Honda shop. I was late getting into Texas because I missed my flight our of OK City. The business discussions dragged on a little too long, but the guy I was with felt bad and drove me down. What a small world the Internet makes...while doing the deal in the show room, I bought the bike from the owner, a guy walked up and sat on the GTS. The guy I'm with asks, jokingly, if he would like to buy it. Then this stranger starts to carry on about knowing all about me and the GTS deal. The mechanic and the guy with me look stupified as he talks; like, are you world famous John..:) Then the stranger explains about the LDR list...:) The ride home from Texas to St. Augustine was a good chance to get acquainted with the GTS. It is a lot different than the FJ..it is much more finely engineered and advanced compared to the old FJ to make it concise. Getting off the FJ and onto the GTS and then riding 1200 plus miles in less than a day, the differences become extremely focused in the mind. The RADD front end is outstanding. On the FJ, when riding in anything loose or unstable, I had virtually no control. It took all my skills just to keep the bike up right on a gravel road. The FJ wouldn't steer, simply plow. Riding down the unfinished road leading into my sister place in Texas was a nice shock. I had to carefully pick my spot when I rode the FJ, in fact, I went down a few months earlier on the FJ when it hit a soft wet grass area and slid out from underneath mewith this GTS, it is like being on a dirt bike. It has no tendency to slid or move on unstable ground. The same feeling with the GTS transfers to hard ground and in corners.it is on rails. It inspires confidence in all riding conditions. It is no light weight at just over 600 lbs wet, but that heaviness disappears once the bike is moving. It feels like you can touch either side of the bike down in the tight stuff without giving it a second thought because it feels so well planted. The ride is extremely plush with little being transmitted back through the handlebars. The power is there, but it doesn't have that surge at seven grand, like the FJ. It just revs and revs like an electric motor. Very smooth, but still has a lot of grunt. You can leave it in top gear and pull all the way from 1500 rpm without a hic-up. On the same ride and at the same speeds, 80 to 90 mph average, on the ride back from Texas, the FJ would have given me around 30 mpg. Roger always told me how good his gas mileage was and I used to thinkyeah! But this EFI system on the Yamaha is something else. At the same speedo speeds, and by the speed I was passing traffic, the speedo is probably about 5% off, like the FJ, I got outstanding mileage. I average 44 to 47 mpg on 5 tank fill ups. It dropped to 44 mpg when I was able to hold the speed closer to 90. I couldn't believe it. What a nice surprise, I almost don't need to put on an aux tank compared to the FJ. Just short of 200 miles the low fuel light comes on and I fill it up with 4 gallons. There is a guy on the GTS list that is a metal worker and who can bump out the stock tank to over seven gallons and still fit it under the plastic. That may be the sensible way to go for LD riding on this thing. In shortI think I have a keeper in this bike, even if Yamaha brings out a light weight tourer. I'll just have to get a bigger garage." hawke
