The CoC encourages "believe the accuser" and "guilty until proven
innocent" for the accused
they compare to other options, cost-wise.
Or, as a _perhaps_ easier and "good enough" solution, consider an
external hard-drive for regular backups (otherwise detached and stored
in a safe space). Even better if you have several to cycle through.

So the current pattern for building with qmake is to use `(build-system
gnu-build-system)` with modify-phases to replace configure. How that
replacement looks exactly varies between packages.
I'm surprised that python-pyqt has
(native-inputs `(("qtbase" ,qtbase))) ; for qmake
but other packages that replace configure do not.
