How odd it is that someone would paint a picture from a photo of a costume
exhibit at the Met. Since it is his original oil painting, it might not be
a copyright issue. However, it probably would have been better to credit the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the photos
That is an interesting question. They are his original paintings, copied
from photos in the book. I'm not sure where copyright falls on this issue.

he had posted the photos from the book, yes, he would definitely need
permission, and I would doubt very much if he asked for and got

Victoria's Secret catalog lingerie photo, and did a painting from it for
the cover of a romance novel, changing the clothes a bit (such as they
were). He was sued and lost.
