[h-cost] Corset flossing

2006-05-17 Thread katherine sanders

I have some lovely pictures of the kind of flossing that was used in
the late 19th century, but they do not come with instructions. Can
anyone point me at a website, or instructions please? Suzi

Suzi - I've not found anything about how to actually do it on the web or indeed
in any books. However, playing around on a couple of corsets I've found that
using two or three strands of cotton embroidery floss (since I'm not going to
be washing them), secured with a couple of small stitches inside and then
building up the design over and through the spiral from the front works. It is
/very/ hard on your fingers especially until you get the feel for the spacing
between coils but can be very effective.

I'm sorry that I can't be more help but if I find anything will be sure to post
it here.

I would also love to hear of anyone who has wholesale or inexpensive pieces.
I go to the gem show and they have some but it is about 89.00 for what I
need. They are not very big either. Also? Does anyone know a place that
sells pearls on chain?

Hi,
Does anyone know where you can purchase filigree metal plaques for
making a Tudor / Elizabethan girdle?
I'd like to be able to glue stones to the plaques to dress them up.
I know there are people selling these girdles premade, so they have to be
getting them from somewhere.
  Thanks
  Melody

Thanks for that - I have actually done fairly simple style flossing
with proper flossing silk - bought in a charity shop many years ago!!
But I would really like to do it properly. And yes, I agree, it is
hard on the fingers - and the needles - bent at least two trying to
fight one through a space that wasn't there!

[h-cost] Photos of 1569 Bodice

2006-05-17 Thread Jayne Thomas
Hi!

I've finally managed to get some photos of the muslin of my daughters 1569
bodice. It can be found at http://photos.yahoo.com/dresspattern .Please excuse
the pink shirt, it's pretending to be a white chemise! She has tried it on,
and fits perfectly now (I cut it on age 5!), so I'm worried by the time that I
get the real thing finished, it will not fit. I only get about 7 or 8 hours
sewing a week, and at the moment I'm doing the muslin of the skirt. The velvet
and the forepart material have cost me a small fortune, and I need to get it
right before I cut the 'good stuff'!

  Best Wishes

Most muslin for general theater use can be found for about $1 a yard if you

Lightweight and transparent sounds like actual muslin to me rather than
calico which is what is usually called muslin in the US. That may mean the
price is better than it appears;)

And then there is this muslin for use in the theatre:
http://setshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=130

And then I found this:
http://www.fishmansfabrics.com/mus_ltwgt.htm
Contents:70% polyester,30% cotton
Description: lightweight,semi-sheer

So it may be helpful for a bit more description in terms of what the fabric
is for.

I assume $69 is US $69?

If so, it's a ripoff. I've usually seen muslin go for $2.50-$3.50 around here
(SE Pennsylvania) at the most. $69 for 15 yards is about $4.60.

Where are you? If you are in the New York/ New Jersey area you can get
muslin for about .99 - 2.00 a yard at Joannes, depending on the width. Less
if you have a coupon. Unless you are looking for a really wide width that
sounds like a LOT of money.

It's for draping the stage. Ceiling to floor and in layers. Should also be
sheer, as we'll be projecting light through it in addition to onto it.
Theatrical sheers at that width are $89.99 according to one website passed
along, so maybe it's not so bad a price for the width.

We'll need a LOT so it probably needs to be the wider variety, or we'll be
sewing 100's of yards together.
