[h-cost] sheared faux fur
Greetings I'm searching for a source for a faux sheared white fur. When I say sheared, I mean fairly closely sheared--the pile is quite short and flat. I used to be able to get a really good-quality fur of this type from Fabulous Furs, but to my dismay they no longer carry it. I'd like to avoid any of the low-quality teddy-bear fur. I'm willing to pay $60 or so a yard to get a good fur. Any ideas? Thanks, Melanie Schuessler ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

I'm not sure how you gauge quality, but Hancocks (the chain) carried a number of nice faux furs this spring, including a very soft, short sheepskin looking one that came in pastels and an off-white. I forget how much it was, it was over $20 a yard and I put it into the when pigs fly category for potential purchases. The stores in this area made displays of a couple of those shearling jackets that were popular for about a week this spring. I just stop for several months, and look around, go visit my family (just got back from a three month trip driving from long island, NY to Dallas, TX, and back again. put on over 7,000 miles on my truck. i stopped all along the way to visit any family that i know about, even one third cousin and several great aunts and uncles). I had not been very interested in sewing or much of anything for several months, but now that i'm back i am itching to get back to it... I am spending today unbarring my sewing area from what i piled up as i was leaving and what my husband littered the room with, and hoping i can get in one small project before the i should cook dinner. -- Bjarne og Leif Drews wrote: What do you do when you finally realise you dont want to reenact anymore, and when your costumes gets bored to look at? Take a break! It sounds like the thought of doing more costuming work right now would stress you out; pay attention to that and just ...let it go for a while. You don't have to do it if you don't want to. What do you do when you finally realise you dont want to reenact anymore, and when your costumes gets bored to look at? When alll your reenactment friends leaves you, and your family two? What is left then? Take a complete break from it. Set yourself a week to avoid all activities related to it, make sure all your fabrics and notions are out of sight as well. You will either find yourself going mad thinking of things you could be doing, in which case you know the passion is still there and you need to find a better way of expressing it (finding a new group, maybe even a new era) or you'll find yourself heaving a huge sigh of relief in which case you know you need a holiday. I go through periods where I wonder what I'm doing with a certain group or more especially with my website/online interaction with other costumers. I find a few days break is enough to find what I really want from it, and then I make any necessary changes to how I deal with issues that have upset/angered me. Your situation is of course much more complex. It sounds like you need to find what really drives you, costuming and reenacting are often outlets for a great deal of inquisitiveness and creativity. A lot of people burn out having focussed on a single time frame/group. If you still feel the need to create something beautiful, try out some other areas of art just to take a break. I find photography makes me happiest, I like to find shapes and colours in everyday items. Actually what I love photographing more than anything are cloud formations. You pack everything up and you put it away cause as soon as the bug hits you again you will regret your action of giving or selling them in the very worst way. It will hurt in your chest, it will make you cry, it will make your throat go dry. Pack it up nicely and as you touch each piece remember something good about it and fold it neatly as you put it away. Then go and find a new set of friends that do nothing of what you did. Enjoy your time with them. Find a new partner or 5, have some fun. Someday you will go back to what you loved. - Original Message - From: Bjarne og Leif Drews [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2006 2:21 PM Subject: [h-cost] What do you do? That's one of the hallmark signs -- that stuff that you love doing no longer has any attraction for you. Re: [h-cost] What do you do?
Maby take a break and do something totally different. Take some distance. But some things will never dissapear totally. I love ballet and making costumes. I quit ballet when I was around 15. But started again when at 27. I do it now twice a week and love it even more than before. With costumes, I started to make 16th century clothing while in the SCA. But at some point in time I noticed that I didn't have fun anymore in the SCA. Sometimes You grow out of things and it is time to move on. I started doing reenactment. But now my top priorety is triening to make a little money with making fantasy costumes. Mostly because I love making fantasy costumes for my self. And this way I can afford them. And making Bunny backpacks that a lot of people find totally childish but I just love them. And I hope some people who buy them will have as much fun with them as I do. Don't worry and give yourself time. Just endyoy whatever you do. Sometimes it is just to find a way to a different angle to look at things. At least you know that the work you have done is loved by many people. But what ever you do don't let it force you to do things that you don't want. Re: [h-cost] What do you do?
What Debbie said, Exactly! I've had my times like that, too. And it always comes back to me, and me only happy when I'm making something (or reading), regardless of family or lack of same (and I don't have much) or the SCA driving me insane When I burnout, I switch to another hobby. I don't think I could *not* do something with my hands, whether it's sewing costumes/historical clothing, or working with textiles (spinning, weaving, knitting, embroidery, lacemaking). I have the advantage that my main/only real outlet for reenactment is the SCA, which covers a broad enough time span and number of cultures that I can change just about everything I do and focus on, and still remain within the group. So if I'm tired to pieces of 16th century costuming, I can focus on translating cooking texts for a few years. Or learn calligraphy. Or pick up knitting Islamic socks. Ya gotta do what nourishes your soul, and to do that, you really need to know what *does* nourish your soul. So, when I'm feeling like you sound, I take a step back for a while, give myself a break, and figure out what's going on. Is the job too stressful? The significant other? Are there health issues (mental or physical)? Change can be really, really scary, but it can be really, really good, too.
