2008-10-31 Thread Pierre & Sandy Pettinger
I wore hubby's "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" Great
Pumpkin. This was our entry at Archon this year (St. Louis science
fiction convention). I only kept it on long enough for the contest,
though, as I was sweating buckets in it. I think they decided to
turn the heat up in the building last night (and the temp hit 75 F
today in Nebraska - go figure!) Everyone seemed to like it, but I
didn't win the contest. Oh, well. :-( When a pic is available from
the convention, or I can get another one posted somewhere, I'll let you know.

This is really an Old French dictionary. Meaning that, if you're
reading an old text and want to know what a word means, it might help

The coat is almost done, and I wish I had taken AlbertCat's suggestion. I
bought something similar to thinsulate, as the LFS was out of thinsulate. I
don't remember what she called it, but what I bought resembles a thick
synthetic craft felt. Slightly less stiff and slightly more fluffy than
craft felt.

Now that the coat is assembled, I think it's too thick. My daughter thinks
it's wonderful and warm, so that's okay, I guess. Also, I never did find the
direction pages 2 and 3, so the construction is probably a little
unorthodox. I assumed that since there were several separate pattern pieces
for the lining that they would be cut slightly smaller. That does not appear
to have been the case. Either that, or the thickness of the insulation is
changing the lining's fit. If I hadn't whip stitched the insulation pieces
together over the lining seams (to make it lay flat) I think I would go back
and add another 1/8 in to the lining seams. A few of them, at least, but
undoing the hand stitching, re-sewing the seams, trimming the insulation and
re-stitching just seems like a little too much work. ;-)

Well, thanks for all the advice! When the hem and buttons are done, I'll
post a photo on flickr for anyone who wants to see it.

Re: [h-cost] book is confirmed!!!

2008-10-31 Thread Chiara Francesca
Yep, that is a given. They will arrive while you all are in Florence. I would
much rather be with you all though than here reading it.

Sad thing about it, I just got a job. Had I gotten it just 3 weeks ago I could
go with you all, air fare just dropped again!

[h-cost] French titles - Medieval costume and textiles

2008-10-31 Thread Beth and Bob Matney

From Beth Matney:

I am building a "wish list" of books from France
for my reference collection. I already have some
titles (other than those listed below... either
in French or translation) and would appreciate
comments on the following (and suggestions of others). Thanks.

Pinasa, Delphine. Costumes. Modes et manières
d'être, (tome 1). Patrimoine vivant. Paris:
R.E.M.P.ART., 1992. ISBN:2904365133 9782904365133 OCLC:32681329
Paperback. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. illustrated

Beaune (France). Drôles de trames : Tapisseries
médiévales et contemporaines. [Beaune]: Muse es
de Beaune, 2002. ISBN:2850565946 9782850565946 OCLC:52471414

120 pp. With 104 ills. (101 col. ) and 41 reference ills. 28 x 26 cm.
Botta, Diana Brennan, Ester Chacon-Avila, Bernard
Fortin, Thomas Gleb, Josep Grau-Garriga, Fabrice
