Re: [h-cost] Regency robe 1812

Hi Deredere,
The picture looks a lot the one titled Robe de mousseline brodée c.1806 et
châle Cachemire from Gallery 4, but with a train and slighty more embellishment
for a ceremonial engagement.

Hi,

I found a beautifull picture on the web from a 1812 robe.

http://exposition2005.monsite.wanadoo.fr/page5.html

I have been asked to make a wedding dress in this style but I don't know much
about it.
She send me two small drawings and the dress above was the only one I could
find in the same style
It looks very french to me.
I can't seem to find more pictures of this style of dress.
I would love to have more pictures to see what types of fabric and
embellishmend was used.

Greetings,

Re: [h-cost] Buying a costume business

2006-07-02 Thread taniampembroke
I don't know much about the costume business, but in business in general the
first thing thing to learn is to never assume. Alway find out 100% and get it
in writting. There are a lot of shady people out there. You're going to also
want to inspect and document the condition of every costume so that you can
reasearch what they're worth. You don't want to end up with one nice costume
and 1999 crappy ones.

I just heard about an opportunity to buy a costume business and recalled that
someone of one of these lists was discussing such a prospect that came up in
Denver, CO. I am a costume person, not a business person and know absolutely
nothing about such purchases. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of
costume rental/construction businesses or if anyone here owns/runs one and
might be able to give me some insight. All I know so far is that the owner
wants 30 grand for 2000 costumes and equipment, I assume.

Re: [h-cost] Judging costume contest? Help!

2006-07-01 Thread taniampembroke
What I've seen that works well for the public is to have someone announce that
the contest is about to begin and that anyone interested should come up to
stage. You can either have appointed judges or do the winner(s) by crowd
applause. If you're worried about hurting someones feelings you can always have
some sort of side prize such as most imaginative. Hope this helps.

Our local Habitat for Humanity affiliate is having a theme party fundraiser,
20s/30s era, and is planning a costume contest. The tickets are sold to the
general public and fancy dress is optional, so pretty much anything goes. We
need help with the logistics of it. Should guests have to sign up for the
contest, should we just choose someone from the crowd and announce it, how
should we handle it? We really need to make it fun and so that no one's hurt or
embarrassed. (These are guests who are donating $ and playing games, not a
serious special interest group.) Has anyone ever been involved in something
like
this? Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome, thanks!

Re: [h-cost] Hand fan silk handpainted

2006-03-18 Thread taniampembroke
I'ts really hard to tell how bad the damage is by the pictures. If it's not too
bad than it can be reinforced. If the damage is too bad, than yes, the sticks
can be recovered as long as they're not cracked. If they are, you're better of
leaving it as a display.

Hi,

Today I've bought a nice folding fan on an antiek market.
I just fell in love with it and had to buy it.
But the silk is damaged.
Is this reperable?

I am thinking of taking the fabric of and put new silk on it.
I have just the right silk for it.
I am a very practical person and I like to use things instead of letting them
gather dust.
But in this state it is not usable.

I am wondering how others think of what I schould do.

And does anyone knows from which period this fan is?

Pictures from the fan are on the bottom of the page.

Does anyone know where to get tea towels/dish towels of the non-pile linen or
cotton type, preferably from the US? With more or less historic-looking printed
or woven designs such as tapestry, medieval, William Morris, Art Nouveau, Arts
Crafts, Victorian . . . you get the idea. With nice designs but not
cute/sweet.

I use Internet Explorer and it was fine. And I think the colors work
okay--obviously, you are echoing the colors in the purse. I think the green
background is fine--from one comment, I was expecting something much brighter
than
what I saw--and the button color is okay, albeit perhaps a tad bright, but
trying to match the colors from your photo was, I'm sure, a challenge and you
may not be able to get an exact match. I personally think a
patterned/textured background is not necessary, as the needlework is the
star--some textured
backgrounds are just too busy and make the text hard to read.

Just my opinion.

I've always had good luck with Margos patterns. It seems to me that no matter
what pattern or company that you go with you always have to tweak something.

Bummers! I just ordered the Gentlemen's Wardrobe
pattern set to use for my son's Faire outfit. Is
there a better one you would recommend? This is my
first time doing really historically accurate
costuming and I need to get it right.

--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I just bought and made that pattern in November, and
found that there were several corrections to pattern
pieces, directions left off in some places, and at
one place outright wrong directions. Off the top, I
cannot remember what I had to do to make it work, so
I guess I cannot be of much help. I do remember
fighting with the collar, however, and it seems to
me that doing what made sense at the time was the
 right thing to do.

I would not recommend this pattern for someone who
is not already familiar with basic construction
techniques for this type of garment.

Does anyone here have Margos Elizabethan gentlemens
pattern? I've asked on Margos list but can't get an

Hi,
I just recently bought some brocade from this store for an elizabethan gown.
The fabric is beautiful. The colors are vibrant and the pattern is great. I
haven't finished the dress yet, so I don't have pictures, but as long as you
know that the fabric isn't period correct I would go for it.

Hi,

I have a bustle dress and I am wondering if it would look weird to make an
evening bodice for the dress.
The dress is very simple and made from cotton.
But I have just one week to finish a coat and vest for my husband and a dress
for me.

This is the dress
