I soaked one piece for several hours, the paper peeled off but the glue
remained
behind.

Freezing seemed to work a little better, but the silk is so thin that it
thawed
out pretty quickly. (Makes me wish for some dry ice)

You might try soaking them overnight first and see if the labels and
 goo can be scraped off.

We used Un-Du when I worked as a custom framer. It is amazing stuff! You
might try contacting a local frame supply place to see if they'll sell
it to you. (They may not sell to the public, but it never hurts to ask)

Actually, you can buy this in any scrapbooking store, or any craft store that
has a decent supply of scrapbooking supplies.

[h-cost] fabric sample windfall--removing glue

2007-03-30 Thread 00217146

A local interior design store is moving, and is selling off all of their
outdated swatches, cheap. I picked up a bunch of nice pieces to play with, and
I was wondering if anybody had any tricks for removing the glued-on lables?
Some are so old that the glue has turned to powder and the lables just come off.
Some I was able to peel off, leaving a minimum of sticky residue behind. Some
are nice, new lables that aren't interested in leaving; like the one on the
spectrum of silk drapery swatches that I was hoping to use to make a nifty
quilt. I have one soaking in water, now.

Does anyone have any suggestions for removing stickers from fabric? (Warm iron
to soften glue? Freeze it to harden the glue?) I do have enough that I can
sacrifce a few for the sake of experimentation.

Emma, now the proud owner of one small, faded piece of Scalamandre silk brocade!

Selling the discontinued samples (read outrage
here) My local decorator just sets the outdated
samples in a box outside her door free for the taking.
I asked her the first time I saw them - she said it
was easier and cheaper than filling up her dumpster
and paying the dump fee. I have such fun with them -
book covers, gift bags, vests, lap robes - all kinds
of stuff.

In my experience, no one method works for all samples.
Different companies use different glues and they seem
to react differently on various fibers. Some didn't
want to let go at all so I ended up just trimming the
end with the label off.

Good Luck.

You know, I can understand your outrage, but this way actually is fine with me.
 If they just put the outdated samples out in a box, I would never have known;
this particular place is off my beaten path.

The iron seems to be helping loosen the glue, but if I let it get too hot it
just soaks into the fabric. I think (maybe) if I find the perfect temperature,
I can get it to let go of the fabric while still gripping the paper. (On the
other hand, in terms of time spent, it might be cheaper to just buy a few
inches of a hundred different silks!)

It would probably leave marks on silk, but I've had some luck with Goo
Gone--it gets the glue out, and then you can wash it out of washable fabrics.
