[ha-Safran]: Morris Seminar Deadline Extended

2011-09-16 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
FYI,

***

If you're interested in book and media evaluation but have limited
experiences than this seminar is for YOU! ALSC is seeking
applications for its third biennial Morris Seminar: Book Evaluation
Training, to be held on Friday, January 20, 2012, prior to the ALA
Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, Texas. This invitational seminar

During this day-long event, members with limited experience are

leaders for future ALSC evaluation committees.

The Morris Endowment supports those selected to attend the training
seminar by offering the seminar at no charge to the attendee. This
includes all materials, breakfast, lunch, and afternoon break on
Friday. To help defray additional costs for hotel and other
expenses, a $200 stipend for each attendee will be provided by the endowment.

Information and the application are available on the ALSC Web site
at:http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/confevents/morris_events/seminarinfo.cfm

Re: [ha-Safran]: looking for library programming ideas- 3/4th grades

2010-11-15 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Hi Rachel,

Two things that might work are a bingo game and a scavenger hunt.

With the bingo game, you can ask the students to find certain kinds
of books with certain information.

With the scavenger hunt, your clues would be directing them to the
books or items, so you could tell them to look in a dictionary for a
definition, or an encyclopedia for a famous person's birthday, etc.
That way they are learning some basic library skills at the same time.

Also check out www.chinuch.org for programming ideas.

[ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee's Reviews

2010-03-02 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Dear Colleagues:

The Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee produces a compilation of its reviews
each year and makes it available on CD. We are currently evaluating new ways
of disseminating this information, and would appreciate your input:

If you acquired a Quest for the Best Sydney Taylor Book Award CD-ROM at a
convention or by ordering it from AJL, did you ever put the CD into your
computer and take a look at the documents stored on it?

If so, how was reading the reviews helpful? Did it assist you with
collection development? With preparing for booktalks or other programming?
In some other way?

Is the format of the review compilation useful to you (ie. being on CD-ROM,
being arranged alphabetically by title, etc.)?

What elements of the compilation are useful to you?
__ introductory material (history of Sydney Taylor and the award, criteria
for recognition, lists of past winners)
__ scores given by committee members to each title
__ positive reviews
__ negative reviews

I am anxious to receive your feedback at ch...@sydneytaylorbookaward.org.
Thank you for your input.

Subject: [child_lit] TAR: MS/HS Jewish Resources (books/websites)

Hi,

I am looking for good reliable (of course) resources for my middle and high
school teachers on Jewish holidays, mainly Shabbat and Passover for March.
We have a very diverse population. We are hoping to be able to show the
students what is involved with Shabbat (lighting the candles, etc) and
possibly a Passover Seder. I am Jewish (reform) but I don't have anything up
to date in books, (even though they don't change much over the years).

I am looking for books and websites for teachers to use. I don't think any
of the teachers who will be presenting these topics are Jewish and will
probably need some basic background information. I'm sure the students in
the classrooms will be helping and we are hoping a parent or two will be
willing to come in as well to help.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I will post a hit.
TIA!

The Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee appointed three new
members. Their four-year terms will begin in January. The committee
benefits from the diverse membership of AJL, and with the unique
talents and experience of the incoming members, we are confident the
high standards of the committee will continue.

Debbie Feder is the Director of the Library Resource Center at Ida
Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago. An active member of the Chicago AJL
Chapter, Debbie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and
earned her MLS from Dominican University. Debbie, who also worked at
the Skokie Public Library, is a lover of children's literature, first
enthralled by All-of-a-Kind-Family.

Aimee Lurie comes to the committee with experience in a variety of
Jewish libraries, including the Temple-Tifereth Israel, the Fairmount
Temple and the Agnon School, as well as public libraries. Amy has
reviewed books for the AJL Newsletter and VOYA and feels that
reviewing books is every librarian's professional responsibility and
it has always played a critical role in my personal professional
development. Not only does it play an invaluable role in collection
development, I have found it is the best way to keep your finger on
the pulse of publishing trends. Aimee is active in the Cleveland
chapter of AJL and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Ohio
State and an MLS from Kent State University.

Nancy Silverrod is a librarian at San Francisco Public Library. Nancy
graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Michigan University and earned
her MILS at the University of Michigan. Nancy states that My reading
over the years led me to a deeper connection and involvement with
Judaism, and the opportunity to recommend high quality books to
interested readers is one of the things I most enjoy about my work –
a great combination.

Barbara Bietz of Oak Park, California will assume the chairmanship.
She is the author of Like a Maccabee (Yaldah Publishing, 2006). As a
freelance writer, her work has appeared in numerous publications, and
she is a frequent reviewer for Jewish Book World and the AJL Newsletter.

The 2009-2010 Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee will also include
Debbie Colodny(Libertyville, Illinois), Rita Soltan (West Bloomfield,
Michigan); Kathe Pinchuck (Clifton, New Jersey), past chair; and
Rachel Kamin (Chicago, Illinois), compiler. Heidi Estrin (Boca Raton,
Florida) will assist the committee as AJL Public Relations Liason.

Tremendous Harkaras Hatov (appreciation) to Susan Berson (Denver,
Colorado) and Kathy Bloomfield (Wellesley, Massachusetts) who have
served their four-year terms on the committee with distinction.

May this be a year of health, peace and prosperity for us and all of
Klal Yisrael.

Three positions on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee will be
available beginning January 1, 2010.

Applicants should be members of AJL, familiar with the scope of
Judaic children's literature, experienced in writing critical
reviews, willing and able to read and review over 120 books during
the course of a year, and able to meet deadlines.

Committee members are expected to attend annual conventions and to
participate in committee-sponsored events, including speaking at the
Committee's annual presentation. The term of membership on the
Committee is four years. Each committee member typically receives
more than $2,000 in books for review each year, which may be kept for
personal use or added to the member's library. Membership on the
Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee is both fun and intellectually
challenging, but it also requires a substantial commitment in terms
of time and energy.

To apply, send a letter indicating the reasons for your interest, a
resume, and several examples of your recent reviews to Kathe
Pinchuck, Committee Chair, atkpinch...@gmail.com. Applications will
be accepted through August 31, 2009.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Boys immigration

2009-05-25 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
The Notorious Izzy Fink by Don Brown:

 From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8–Gang wars, pickpockets, pushcarts, and tenements best
describe New York Citys Lower East Side in the 1890s, home to
13-year-old Sam Glodsky, the half-Irish, half-Russian Jewish
protagonist. He and his buddy Manny hawk newspapers for pennies to
help put food on their tables. Sam gets involved with the Chief
Inspector of the Health Department, who enlists his help in tracking
down a cholera victim who has escaped a quarantined ship and may be
inadvertently spreading the disease. In order to gain access to the
ship, the boy takes a job with notorious gangster/animal lover Monk
Eastman, who pays him and another boy to rescue a prized carrier
pigeon from the ship. The other boy turns out to be Sams archenemy,
and when Fink mishandles the bird and breaks its wing, Eastman is out
to get him. Expletives and coarse language are a natural part of the
characters dialogue. Though there is some mention of Boss Tweed and
Tammany Hall, the main focus is on the immigrant factions; an
afterword refers to the long-held prejudices of the various ethnic
groups that heightened as they competed for jobs and housing. Even
reluctant readers will enjoy this engaging, action-packed novel, and
the period will spring to life.–Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

[ha-Safran]: Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good

2009-03-25 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Esteemed Colleagues:

I spoke about a 2002 Documentary, Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good
at a recent NYMA Workshop. It is the story of one British citizen who
devised a plan and was able to saved 669 Czech children in 1938 and 1939.

This inspiring documentary tells how an ordinary man took
extraordinary action. This DVD of the film includes 70 minutes of
extra interview footage and additional short films detailing further
information on the rescue operation, the private life of Sir Winton,
his opinions, and the lives of some of the children he saved. It also
includes a teachers' guide with additional archival material and
thought-provoking questions for class discussion.

At one point, this DVD was being distributed to educators at no
charge. This is not the case anymore.

It is available through the National Center for Jewish Film for $49:

January 2009
For immediate release
MEDIA RELEASE

2009 SYDNEY TAYLOR BOOK AWARDS
ANNOUNCED BY THE ASSOCIATION OF JEWISH LIBRARIES

(New York—January 7, 2009) Richard Michelson and Raul Colon, author
and illustrator of As Good As Anybody: Martin Luther King, Jr. and
Abraham Joshua Heschel’s Amazing March Toward Freedom, Karen Hesse,
author of Brooklyn Bridge, and Valerie Zenatti, author of A Bottle in
the Gaza Sea, are the 2009 winners of the prestigious Sydney Taylor
Book Award.

The Sydney Taylor Book Award honors new books for children and teens
that exemplify the highest literary standards while authentically
portraying the Jewish experience. The award memorializes Sydney
Taylor, author of the classic All-of-a-Kind Family series. The
winners will receive their awards at the Association of Jewish
Libraries convention in Chicago this July.

Michelson and Colon will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney
Taylor Book Award’s Younger Readers Category for As Good As Anybody:
Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Joshua Heschel’s Amazing March
Toward Freedom, published by Alfred A. Knopf. Two very special
clergymen, one a rabbi, the other an African-American reverend are
raised in divergently different countries yet experience similar
levels of persecution and bigotry that will one day bring them
together. As colleagues in America’s struggle for civil rights, they
march together from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965. Colon’s
colored pencil and watercolor illustrations “offer a beautiful
complement to the text, describing two unique paths from childhood to
adult life – Martin’s in the rich, warm brown-tones of the American
south and Abraham’s in cool blues and grays that reminded the
illustrator of old World War II movies. When the two exemplary men
join in their march for tolerance, the palettes merge in full color
harmony,” comments Debbie Colodny, a member of the Award Committee.
This book is recommended for grades 2-5.

Hesse will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book
Award’s Older Readers Category for Brooklyn Bridge, published by
Feiwel Friends. While his family left the anti-Semitism of Russia
to build the American dream, Joey Michtom’s dream is to visit the
glittering Coney Island. “Crafting a story from the spark of a true
event, the invention of the Teddy Bear in 1903, Hesse masterfully
weaves multiple themes of hard-work, survival, homelessness, and
familial dedication with interlocking and parallel stories of
families who live reasonably well opposite those less fortunate
living in the shadows below the imposing Brooklyn Bridge,” comments
Rita Soltan, a member of the Award Committee. This book is
recommended for grades 5-8. Hesse also won the 1992 Award for Older
Readers for Letters from Rifka, and a 2004 Honor Award for Older
Readers for The Cats in Kransinski Square.

Zenatti will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book
Award’s Teen Readers Category for A Bottle in the Gaza Sea, published
by Bloomsbury. “This story about the relationship between an Israeli
girl, Tal, and a Palestinian boy, Naim, via e-mail and instant
messaging, is honest but hopeful. Well-written and compelling, the
tale of their relationship conveys the confusion, anger, exhaustion,
and depression felt by many young people during the 2003 intifada,”
comments Susan Berson, a member of the Award Committee. Zenatti’s
memoir, When I Was a Soldier, was a 2005-6 AJL Notable Book for Older Readers.

Six Sydney Taylor Honor Books were named for 2009. For Younger
Readers, Honor Books are: Engineer Ari and the Rosh Hashanah Ride by
Deborah Bodin Cohen with illustrations by Shahar Kober (Kar-Ben),
Sarah Laughs by Jacqueline Jules with illustrations by Natascia
Ugliano (Kar-Ben), A is for Abraham: A Jewish Family Alphabet by
Richard Michelson with illustrations by Ron Mazellan (Sleeping Bear
Press) and Naming Liberty by Jane Yolen with paintings by Jim Burke
(Philomel Books). Aranka Siegal’s Memories of Babi (Farrar Straus
and Giroux) was named an Honor Book for Older Readers, and Freefall
by Anna Levine (Greenwillow Books) was named an Honor Book in the
Teen Reader Category.

In addition to the medal-winners, the Award Committee designated
twenty-two Notable Books of Jewish Content for 2009: six in the
Younger Readers Category, ten in the Older Readers Category, and four
for Teens. Genesis—the Book with Seventy Faces: A Guide for the
Family by Esther Takac with illustrations by Anna Pignataro
(Pitspopany Press) and Celebrating with Jewish Crafts by Rebecca Edid
Ruzansky with photographs by Roberto Zeballos-Peralta
(self-published) impressed the Award Committee with their uniqueness
and range. They have been designated Notable Books

have a Ph.D. in English Literature, Jewish Studies, or other related

Dov Noy considers a folktale Jewish if it contains at least one of
the following:

a Jewish life cycle event (like a bar mitzvah or Jewish holiday);
a Jewish setting (like a synagogue or a shetl);
a Jewish character;
or a Jewish message (like hospitality or charity).

Hope this helps.

[ha-Safran]: Summer Reading Programs

2007-06-25 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Several people at the synagogue librarians' meeting were interested in
summer reading programs. Attached are some useful links.

Summer Reading Opportunities

The Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles sponsors a Jewish Summer
Reading Club for younger readers everywhere. Read 6 Jewish books
throughout the summer which are age or grade appropriate. If you read
to an older or younger sibling or friend, it counts for both of you;
and if a teacher, parent or camp counselor reads to a group of kids it
counts for everyone. The form and additional information are
available at www.jclla.org/summer_reading1.htm, and everyone gets a
certificate and prize for participating.

Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education (Philadelphia, Pa) runs a
summer reading program where three books wins a prize of Rita's Ices.
The suggested reading list is mixed in terms of quality and content,
but there are good examples of flyers, forms and booksmarks.
http://www.acaje.org/content/educationalResources/readingclub/readingclub.shtml.

The Jewish Day School of Metropolitan Seattle has last year's
information posted, but it has age appropriate lists of secular
literature and the rules for their incentive program.

New Jersey uses the Highsmith Program. This year's theme for younger
readers is Get a Clue at Your Library. There is a treasure map for
recording (15 minutes a day), and the libraries provide activity
sheets, lists of books appropriate to the theme, and often sponsor
events related to the theme that includes performances and crafts.

[Hasafran]: Prizes for summer reading club

2006-03-30 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Hello,

My children participate in the summer reading club sponsored by our
local public library. Each year there is a theme, and the children's
coordinator tries to find prizes that tie in with the theme. Last
year the theme was something like Daring Deeds and Dragons, which
had a wizard and castle theme; and this year it is Paws and Claws,
Scales and Tales, with an animal theme. Most of the prizes are
donated by patrons or local businesses. We always get two free games
at the local bowling alley and a free cup of yogurt at TCBY. Other
prizes include free dessert or kid's meal at a place like TGIF and
McDonald's. As prizes, we've gotten stuffed animals, puzzle books
and stickers.

Zerach.com is a good place for Jewish stickers. Taking pictures of
kids with their favorite books and posting them in a prominent place
is also a good incentive.

Good luck!
