Re: [ha-Safran]: looking for library programming ideas- 3/4th grades
Hi Rachel, Two things that might work are a bingo game and a scavenger hunt. With the bingo game, you can ask the students to find certain kinds of books with certain information. With the scavenger hunt, your clues would be directing them to the books or items, so you could tell them to look in a dictionary for a definition, or an encyclopedia for a famous person's birthday, etc. That way they are learning some basic library skills at the same time. Also check out www.chinuch.org for programming ideas. We are currently evaluating new ways of disseminating this information, and would appreciate your input: If you acquired a Quest for the Best Sydney Taylor Book Award CD-ROM at a convention or by ordering it from AJL, did you ever put the CD into your computer and take a look at the documents stored on it? If so, how was reading the reviews helpful? Did it assist you with collection development? With preparing for booktalks or other programming? In some other way? Is the format of the review compilation useful to you (ie. being on CD-ROM, being arranged alphabetically by title, etc.)? Levy To: Child Lit Sent: Tuesday, February 02, 2010 11:26 AM Subject: [child_lit] TAR: MS/HS Jewish Resources (books/websites) Hi, I am looking for good reliable (of course) resources for my middle and high school teachers on Jewish holidays, mainly Shabbat and Passover for March. We have a very diverse population. We are hoping to be able to show the students what is involved with Shabbat (lighting the candles, etc) and possibly a Passover Seder. I am Jewish (reform) but I don't have anything up to date in books, (even though they don't change much over the years). I am looking for books and websites for teachers to use. I don't think any of the teachers who will be presenting these topics are Jewish and will probably need some basic background information. I'm sure the students in the classrooms will be helping and we are hoping a parent or two will be willing to come in as well to help. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Their four-year terms will begin in January. The committee benefits from the diverse membership of AJL, and with the unique talents and experience of the incoming members, we are confident the high standards of the committee will continue. Debbie Feder is the Director of the Library Resource Center at Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago. An active member of the Chicago AJL Chapter, Debbie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and earned her MLS from Dominican University. Debbie, who also worked at the Skokie Public Library, is a lover of children's literature, first enthralled by All-of-a-Kind-Family. Aimee Lurie comes to the committee with experience in a variety of Jewish libraries, including the Temple-Tifereth Israel, the Fairmount Temple and the Agnon School, as well as public libraries. Amy has reviewed books for the AJL Newsletter and VOYA and feels that reviewing books is every librarian's professional responsibility and it has always played a critical role in my personal professional development. Not only does it play an invaluable role in collection development, I have found it is the best way to keep your finger on the pulse of publishing trends. Aimee is active in the Cleveland chapter of AJL and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Ohio State and an MLS from Kent State University. Nancy Silverrod is a librarian at San Francisco Public Library. Nancy graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Michigan University and earned her MILS at the University of Michigan. Nancy states that My reading over the years led me to a deeper connection and involvement with Judaism, and the opportunity to recommend high quality books to interested readers is one of the things I most enjoy about my work a great combination. Re: [ha-Safran]: Boys immigration
The Notorious Izzy Fink by Don Brown: From School Library Journal Grade 4-8Gang wars, pickpockets, pushcarts, and tenements best describe New York Citys Lower East Side in the 1890s, home to 13-year-old Sam Glodsky, the half-Irish, half-Russian Jewish protagonist. He and his buddy Manny hawk newspapers for pennies to help put food on their tables. Sam gets involved with the Chief Inspector of the Health Department, who enlists his help in tracking down a cholera victim who has escaped a quarantined ship and may be inadvertently spreading the disease. In order to gain access to the ship, the boy takes a job with notorious gangster/animal lover Monk Eastman, who pays him and another boy to rescue a prized carrier pigeon from the ship. The other boy turns out to be Sams archenemy, and when Fink mishandles the bird and breaks its wing, Eastman is out to get him. Expletives and coarse language are a natural part of the characters dialogue. Though there is some mention of Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall, the main focus is on the immigrant factions; an afterword refers to the long-held prejudices of the various ethnic groups that heightened as they competed for jobs and housing. Even reluctant readers will enjoy this engaging, action-packed novel, and the period will spring to life.Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Esteemed Colleagues: I spoke about a 2002 Documentary, Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good at a recent NYMA Workshop. It is the story of one British citizen who devised a plan and was able to saved 669 Czech children in 1938 and 1939. This inspiring documentary tells how an ordinary man took extraordinary action. This DVD of the film includes 70 minutes of extra interview footage and additional short films detailing further information on the rescue operation, the private life of Sir Winton, his opinions, and the lives of some of the children he saved. It also includes a teachers' guide with additional archival material and thought-provoking questions for class discussion. At one point, this DVD was being distributed to educators at no charge. [ha-Safran]: 2009 Sydney Taylor Book Awards
For more information, contact: Kathe Pinchuck, Chair Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee Association of Jewish Libraries (973) 777-4504 ch...@sydneytaylorbookaward.org www.SydneyTaylorBookAward.org January 2009 For immediate release MEDIA RELEASE 2009 SYDNEY TAYLOR BOOK AWARDS ANNOUNCED BY THE ASSOCIATION OF JEWISH LIBRARIES (New YorkJanuary 7, 2009) Richard Michelson and Raul Colon, author and illustrator of As Good As Anybody: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Joshua Heschels Amazing March Toward Freedom, Karen Hesse, author of Brooklyn Bridge, and Valerie Zenatti, author of A Bottle in the Gaza Sea, are the 2009 winners of the prestigious Sydney Taylor Book Award. The Sydney Taylor Book Award honors new books for children and teens that exemplify the highest literary standards while authentically portraying the Jewish experience. The award memorializes Sydney Taylor, author of the classic All-of-a-Kind Family series. The winners will receive their awards at the Association of Jewish Libraries convention in Chicago this July. Michelson and Colon will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book Awards Younger Readers Category for As Good As Anybody: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Joshua Heschels Amazing March Toward Freedom, published by Alfred A. Knopf. Two very special clergymen, one a rabbi, the other an African-American reverend are raised in divergently different countries yet experience similar levels of persecution and bigotry that will one day bring them together. As colleagues in Americas struggle for civil rights, they march together from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965. Colons colored pencil and watercolor illustrations offer a beautiful complement to the text, describing two unique paths from childhood to adult life Martins in the rich, warm brown-tones of the American south and Abrahams in cool blues and grays that reminded the illustrator of old World War II movies. When the two exemplary men join in their march for tolerance, the palettes merge in full color harmony, comments Debbie Colodny, a member of the Award Committee. This book is recommended for grades 2-5. Hesse will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book Awards Older Readers Category for Brooklyn Bridge, published by Feiwel Friends. While his family left the anti-Semitism of Russia to build the American dream, Joey Michtoms dream is to visit the glittering Coney Island. Crafting a story from the spark of a true event, the invention of the Teddy Bear in 1903, Hesse masterfully weaves multiple themes of hard-work, survival, homelessness, and familial dedication with interlocking and parallel stories of families who live reasonably well opposite those less fortunate living in the shadows below the imposing Brooklyn Bridge, comments Rita Soltan, a member of the Award Committee. This book is recommended for grades 5-8. Hesse also won the 1992 Award for Older Readers for Letters from Rifka, and a 2004 Honor Award for Older Readers for The Cats in Kransinski Square. Zenatti will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book Awards Teen Readers Category for A Bottle in the Gaza Sea, published by Bloomsbury. This story about the relationship between an Israeli girl, Tal, and a Palestinian boy, Naim, via e-mail and instant messaging, is honest but hopeful. Well-written and compelling, the tale of their relationship conveys the confusion, anger, exhaustion, and depression felt by many young people during the 2003 intifada, comments Susan Berson, a member of the Award Committee. Zenattis memoir, When I Was a Soldier, was a 2005-6 AJL Notable Book for Older Readers. Six Sydney Taylor Honor Books were named for 2009. For Younger Readers, Honor Books are: Engineer Ari and the Rosh Hashanah Ride by Deborah Bodin Cohen with illustrations by Shahar Kober (Kar-Ben), Sarah Laughs by Jacqueline Jules with illustrations by Natascia Ugliano (Kar-Ben), A is for Abraham: A Jewish Family Alphabet by Richard Michelson with illustrations by Ron Mazellan (Sleeping Bear Press) and Naming Liberty by Jane Yolen with paintings by Jim Burke (Philomel Books). Aranka Siegals Memories of Babi (Farrar Straus and Giroux) was named an Honor Book for Older Readers, and Freefall by Anna Levine (Greenwillow Books) was named an Honor Book in the Teen Reader Category. In addition to the medal-winners, the Award Committee designated twenty-two Notable Books of Jewish Content for 2009: six in the Younger Readers Category, ten in the Older Readers Category, and four for Teens. Genesisthe Book with Seventy Faces: A Guide for the Family by Esther Takac with illustrations by Anna Pignataro (Pitspopany Press) and Celebrating with Jewish Crafts by Rebecca Edid Ruzansky with photographs by Roberto Zeballos-Peralta (self-published) impressed the Award Committee with their uniqueness and range. They have been designated Notable Books

[ha-Safran]: Summer Reading Programs
Several people at the synagogue librarians' meeting were interested in summer reading programs. Attached are some useful links. Kathe Pinchuck Congregation Beth Sholom Teaneck, NJ Summer Reading Opportunities The Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles sponsors a Jewish Summer Reading Club for younger readers everywhere. Read 6 Jewish books throughout the summer which are age or grade appropriate. If you read to an older or younger sibling or friend, it counts for both of you; and if a teacher, parent or camp counselor reads to a group of kids it counts for everyone. The form and additional information are available at www.jclla.org/summer_reading1.htm, and everyone gets a certificate and prize for participating. Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education (Philadelphia, Pa) runs a summer reading program where three books wins a prize of Rita's Ices. The suggested reading list is mixed in terms of quality and content, but there are good examples of flyers, forms and booksmarks. http://www.acaje.org/content/educationalResources/readingclub/readingclub.shtml. Last year the theme was something like Daring Deeds and Dragons, which had a wizard and castle theme; and this year it is Paws and Claws, Scales and Tales, with an animal theme. Most of the prizes are donated by patrons or local businesses. We always get two free games at the local bowling alley and a free cup of yogurt at TCBY. Other prizes include free dessert or kid's meal at a place like TGIF and McDonald's. As prizes, we've gotten stuffed animals, puzzle books and stickers. Zerach.com is a good place for Jewish stickers. Taking pictures of kids with their favorite books and posting them in a prominent place is also a good incentive. Good luck! Re: [ha-Safran]: Video Recommendation for The Chosen
Dear Rachel, et.al: A Life Apart from 1997 is a pretty good bet. It retails for about $30.00. If you go to the link below, you can read some reviews, one of them mentioned The Chosen. I am trying to find a book about Rabbi Katzenellenbogen which was originally published by Nachiel. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.
