I was on the Convention Committee for 2003. In general, I have a lousy memory for this sort of thing, but I remember that fear of SARS affected registration, even though the outbreak was relatively small and had been contained by early June, but by then, many had already decided not to come.

Thanks for the reminder, Susan. SARS hit Toronto particularly hard. My recollection is that we had to change hotels, and we waited until a bit later than usual to do registration. But the Conference went on and we all had a great time (including lots of people going to the Shoe Museum nearby).
