How to install prerelease package versions (particularly Emacs)

2018-03-02 Thread Jorge
Hi. I use Spacemacs v.0.300.0 (develop) atop Emacs 26.0.91. I compile
Emacs 26 locally and stow it with GNU Stow. I would prefer to get Emacs
26 from Guix, which would be more automatic and would come configured to
work with Guix-installed Emacs packages. So is Emacs 26 available from
Guix? Unfortunately ~guix package --show=emacs~ only reports version
25.3, but maybe there is a non intuitive way to get Emacs 26.

For help-guix I’d be willing to not explicitly state it.

Exactly, time will tell! I think the initial challenge will be to get

I'd still put a mark for the langage used, you never know, you might want
to process messages with automated tools

Or you may have to deal with extravagant people

I agree in allowing the usage of langages other than English

I will keep using English, for myself

I might reply to a question written in Italian, though

There is! I followed the vague instructions in this message to
convert my debian installation to a GuixSD installation and it
(broadly speaking) worked.

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guix-devel/2017-04/msg00139.html

The trick is not to "init", but just to "reconfigure" into GuixSD.
It feels a bit hacky, but it works.

It's a bug in the Linux kernel itself, caused by how it actually looks
and loads stuff. See the reply given by Alexandre Oliva ([1]).

Posts in languages other than English on help-guix?

2018-03-02 Thread Ludovic Courtès
Hello Guix!

What about allowing posts on help-guix in one of the languages that
regular contributors know, in addition to English?

The alternative would be to create separate language-specific lists, but
some (rightfully) think there’s a risk of a disconnect with actual
developers.

Of course it’s hard to tell what a multilingual mailing list will be
like, but I think it’s worth experimenting (and I don’t expect a
significant change overnight). If we are to reach out to more people,
allowing them to use the language they know best is the minimum we can
do IMO.

WDYT?

To experiment with this on help-guix, I propose the patch below for the
web site. If you’re a committer, please provide a translation for the
language(s) you know!

Could you run the faulty Emacs with:

  LD_DEBUG=files emacs

to see what file it tries and fails to dlopen?

Or otherwise with:

  strace emacs

TIA!

The pre-core-updates Guix needed the Guile bootstrap tarballs in its
build tree.

However, commit 59127916556d75554de52910ccd1565e17b7b127 removed those
tarballs from the inputs of the ‘guix’ package because they are no
longer needed (see 4f024ef3181c5235ff11789e8c8f62722f974787).

The solution for you is to reinstate those inputs when you’re building
older ‘guix’ packages.

HTH!

Looking at this, I thought we should be able to do a better job to start
an already installed GuixSD, for instance by providing a script that
boots the system.

Actually, I suspect that something like this would work:

  cd /tmp/guixsd
  chroot . /gnu/store/…/bin/guile /run/current-system/boot

With a bit of work, we could make it as simple as:

  /tmp/guixsd/run/current-system/spawn

or similar.

Thoughts?

Currently the simplest solution is to expose it for services where the
need is widespread.

Longer-term we may want a more generic mechanism like
.

Not really I’m afraid.

The general recommendation is to *not* use /dev names and instead refer
to file systems by UUID or label. However, in the case or RAID, that’s
not possible ATM.
