[IAEP] International Society for Technology in Education 2016 Conference and Expo?

2016-03-30 Thread Dave Crossland
Hi

Is anyone involved in Sugar Labs going to https://conference.iste.org/2016/
 ?

Has anyone gone from SL attended previous years?

ISTE 2016 says it is "the premier education technology conference," and
will be held June 26-29 in Denver, Colorado, USA.

I read the doc and the structure of the policy seems good, but I would like
to suggest some edits

- general edits for clarity, not exactly like
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_English but in that direction

- a section of the document for numbering it (semver.org style)

- a section for declaring variables like $X and $Y

I therefore requested comment access via Google Docs :)

Thanks Walter. Actual topic is: absenteeism of board members.

In short, proactive replacement of board members who become regularly
absent for whatever unfortunate reason (health, death, resignation, family
obligations, change of life circumstances, etc).

Sometimes life gets in the way (and eventually death) of everyone's service
commitments, and we should honor their past service if so, no hard feelings
as life is about change!

To keep us all moving firmly forward, I will suggest that Board ethics
presume voting very regularly (or actively abstaining, by email if nec) or
if that's not possible: for board members to kindly remove themselves from
the Board if they are unfortunately unable to stay engaged, for whatever
reason.

Certainly we hope no board members ever die, suffer mental incapacitation,
kidnapping etc. However ongoing decision-making and dynamic governance is
severely disrupted by ongoing absenteeism, whatever the regrettable reason.

So in keeping with the board 2010's decision on this matter from a
different era, I will suggest that if a Board Member (1) fails to vote and
attend pre-scheduled Board meetings for more than 12 weeks, (2) resigns or
(3) dies, then the Board is empowered and encouraged to appoint a
replacement for this seat.

Finally, just a clarification that the Replacement Board Member would be
required to defend their seat during the very next election.

Of course the above is just a proposal, towards nudging forward the
efficiency and effectiveness of Sugar Labs' Board: naturally this (or any
such similar) will need to be voted on by the Board, before it can be
enacted!

During February's meeting I was assigned to report back during March's
meeting ideas on how to replace continuously inactive board members -- in a
respectful, consistent and most professional way -- to protect the vibrancy
of our legacy.

Then during March's meeting, time did not permit me to present this
high-priority action, ensuring our legacy and governance is purposeful and

Thanks all for keeping clean, proactive governance at the top of our list,

Hi,
Try to avoid sending such large attachments in the future. The prefered
way to contribute code and get feedback is thru a Git repository (such
as Github).

Thanks for your contribution, hopefully you can engage the right people.
While some people on this list have taken part in deploying tablets, I
doubt we have the right people in the community to facilitate a
sustainable endeavor in this direction. Tablets tend to come crippled
with anti-tinkering software/hardware. For what hardware is your project?

My daughter was gifted an Amazon Fire tablet and I had a really hard
time rooting, removing spy/malware, and installing only (android based)
Free Software on it.

Hi Walter,

As I said at last meeting, I would like to add a topic regarding "Sugar

Will share a document proposal.

Best regards from France.

I really hope the proposal for the "Sugar Projects translation fund"
creation makes it to the meeting. All we want is to start working with
clear rules.

Yo realmente espero que la propuesta de creación del "Fondo para traducir
proyectos de Sugar" logre estar en la reunión. Todo lo que queremos es
empezar a trabajar con reglas claras.

Sebastian, to quote your wife's e-mail "After a long talk with Edgar,
I am very worried that you keep asking for funds on his name.". In
rhetorical terms, what you are doing is known as misdirection. I was
speaking to her expressed concerns about Edgar, not about her "Sugar
Translation Projects Fund" proposal. I did not feel it necessary to
address that point as Walter's agenda:

Agenda:
1. Google Summer of Code status
2. Wiki Cleanup Party planning
3. Request from Edgar Quispe to attend Traducción e interpretación en
las lenguas originarias del Perú meeting in Lima
4. I18n manager discussion
5. Proposal from Samson Goddy re i18n in Nigeria
6. YOUR TOPIC HERE

includes an invitation for additional topic to be added (i.e. YOUR
TOPIC HERE), but perhaps that was lost in translation.

Do I detect an attempt at sarcasm in that autotranslator comment?
That's not at all collegial, My Spanish is indeed a bit rusty, but I
muddle through. When one works in i18n/L10n one must be aware of (and
sensitive to) the role of language and culture, as well as the fact
that some things, like sarcasm, do not translate well.

Yes, in June of 2015, I did miss reading two messages posted to
sugar-devel that had no further on-list follow-up. I'm afraid my only
defense to that accusation is that there were 132 messages from that
list in that month and these two escaped my notice. In retrospect,
I'm sorry I missed the opportunity to comment in a more timely manner.
This doesn't seem to be the right place for it, but the issues you
raise in those messages do not seem to be either egregious in number
or all that unexpected to someone with broader L10n project management
experience, it is part and parcel of the task. I'm glad that you
addressed them, but they in no way tarnish the value of the extensive
work done by Edgar.

Please be specific about any misconceptions on my part.

I must strenuously object to this statement "unwillingness to engage
with the actual local community" It is entirely unsubstantiated and
frankly offensive. Is this how you would treat all volunteers to
Sugar Labs if given a funded position? I feel no particular need to
defend my record of interactions with local language communities
against your entirely unwarranted and self-serving attack. Shame on
you, you know better, you seem to have let your "passion" get the
better of you.

After how she was ignored in the last meeting [1] and the fact that the

Your long email is filled with errors. Please read the following emails
(use an autotranslator and ask if you don't understand, sorry,
sugar-devel is supposed to be bilingual) in order to get an idea about
the issues surrounding the Aymara translation in Peru. Those emails had
Roger Gonzalo the translator hired by the Ministry of Education in copy.

http://lists.sugarlabs.org/archive/sugar-devel/2015-June/050416.html
http://lists.sugarlabs.org/archive/sugar-devel/2015-June/050449.html

In short, no, the Aymara work done last year from Sugar Labs is not
exemplary at all.

Seeing so many misconceptions from your part and an unwillingness to
engage with the actual local community, I am concerned that you may not
be the ideal candidate for a Localization Team leader if this will be a
paid position. I am passionate about the subject and knowledgeable about
its intricacies and have been underfunded for a long time to engage in
this work, therefore I hereby announce that I will ask for this position
in opposition to you.

For transparency I have been paid ~3300 US dollars by the Ministry of
Education of Peru for integrating translations, writing patches for
Sugar, training translators, writing a manual, maintaining Pootle, and
releasing a localized OLPC OS build from Nov 2014 to Jan 2016. The fact
that you take credit for some of this work, is lamentable too.

Any further question from the SLOBs or the translation committee are
more than welcome as transparency is indeed very important.

I will write a proposal and share it publicly as everything in Sugar
Labs should be in the first place.

[IAEP] 2 Motions for Consideration 04/01/16

2016-03-30 Thread Caryl Bigenho
Hi Folks…
I am presenting 2 proposals regarding the position of Treasurer (a position
currently undefined and unfilled) for consideration at Friday's SLOBs meeting.
One is an ammendment to the bylaws regarding the eligibility of the person
serving in the position and the other is a separate motion dealing with the
duties of said Treasurer and how financial matters would be handled going
forward.
To see and comment or "tweak" these proposals, you can go to:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/16jIFuZ9bX-Bv675BpA1KmcEcRcX4PRCOUEX0ICRUkOc/edit?usp=sharing

I will also attach a copy to this email, but to add your input, please go to
Google Docs to do it so we can all see it. You will note that something has
been left open intentionally under "Expenses" ($X). Comments and suggestions on
this amount before the meeting would be a way to speed things up when the board
actually considers the motion.
The main purpose of these motions is to clarify how finances will be handled in
the future and to simplify and clarify the procedure for requesting and
disbursing funds for approved projects. The proposal submitted by Samson Goddy
for a translation project in Nigeria is an excellent example of the kind of
well crafted proposal that we would hope to see in the future with these
motions added to the bylaws.
I also want to clarify that, under no circumstances do I wish to be considered
for the position of Treasurer. I think it should be someone who has the time
and energy to do it well! I can think of several such people, but I will leave
that to the SLOBs.
Caryl Bigenho
P.S. I have been without internet since Sunday (just had new service installed
late yesterday) so I didn't send this until this morning.

Laura, I think there is little or no cause for your worry. there is
no need to be alarmist.

Walter put it on the agenda for discussion at the SLOB meeting,
obviously he plans to explain, I don't see why you would expect him
reply to your widely broadcast message at this time, simply attend the
SLOB meeting or read the transcript after and then raise further
questions if you have them. Two days is not too long to wait and
Walter is a busy guy.

As for your speaking on Edgar's behalf about his plans, I think we can
let Edgar speak for himself, he is a long standing member of the Sugar
Labs L10n community and although it is unfortunate that some of the
automated history of his contributions was lost in the Pootle
migration, I can attest for the fact that he has submitted in excess
of 20,000 words of Aymara L10n to Sugar. The work he has done in
Aymara provides the best model we have of how further funding of L10n
should be done. The exact terms under which Sugar Labs funded his
work have been widely distributed.

I should also note that the pseudonymous user: traductor_aymara
(e-mail conta...@somosazucar.org) has contributed 4000 words to Aymara
(separately from Edgar's work).

BTW, who is the actual Aymara-speaking translator of the strings
submitted under this username? I would love to contact them about
some issues relating to the classification of the Aymara language in
ISO-639 that are currently under discussion concerning the ayc_PE
glibc locale that I submitted upstream to enable use of Aymara L10n
in Sugar. It is important to bring direct input from Aymara speakers
to this conversation and I am hoping to reach out to as many
L10n-aware Aymara speakers as I can find in order to help them
properly stake their various claims on the Aymara "name-space" in
Linux and to avoid future namespace collisions as more software is
localized into various forms of Aymara across various platforms.

In the interest of transparency, has somosazucar solicited or received
any funding for the L10n work done under the traductor_aymara username
(or that of the similarly registered user: traductor_quechua?

If so, what were the terms of that funding?

It would help to put all information about Aymara translations on the
table and allow people to make informed judgments as to any potential
conflicts-of-interest that may or may not exist. Looking forward to
learning more about this.

2016-03-30 Thread Laura Vargas
Walter,

After a long talk with Edgar, I am very worried that you keep asking for
funds on his name.

You requested US$1,000 on January and he has no idea, and now you are
requesting funds for him to assist to a meeting that he is not going to
attend, because the meeting in Lima is today and today he has no money to
travel.

This can not continue.

Please explain.

I am not sure of the reason why the proposal for the creation of the "Sugar
Projects Translation Funds" was ignored on the last meeting.

No vote on favor or against it was done.

I did request to add the "Sugar Translation Projects Fund" topic on the
agenda last time. And I'm requesting again for the 1st of April meeting.
Any question about the proposal I'll continue to answer constructively,
looking forward for a transparent procedure to request and distribute such
funds.

This may be the most important decision for current SLOBs.
