Re: [IAEP] [support-gang] Plan Ceibal's Khan Academy Web site

2013-01-17 Thread Werner Westermann
Hi Adam, best regards from Santiago.

The spanish localization of Khan's videos has been an joint effort between
IADB, Intel and the ministries of education of Uruguay and Chile. Chile's
tasks was to translate the Biology videos, don't know why they are noy
included in Ceibal's portal. Also the same videos were also ttranslated to
portuguese. I speak about localization because in many cases the videos
had to be re-mixed, for example, because of different rules in the use of
commas or any text appearing in the video. I've heard that the use last
year (officially launched in June at
http://virtualeduca.org/encuentros/panama/) has been very striking,
counting the spanish and the portuguese, lessons deliverd touch the 5
million (a Khan delivered lesson is counted when the video has
been enterily watched). Best wishes,

Werner

2013/1/17 Holt h...@laptop.org

These vids seem high-quality, does anybody know how Ceibal did this?
(not that I speak Spanish unfortunately!)

Any idea how many of the world's 465 Million Spanish speakers
can-or-care to watch these, as Wifi/Net/4G invades more rural parts of
 Latin America?

 Hey everyone,

maybe this is old news for people here but I just saw that Plan Ceibal
has a separate Khan Academy Web site at http://khan.ceibal.edu.uy/ where
they are apparently hosting 1,100 (!) videos which have been translated to

Quite impressive I dare say! :-)

  Cheers from snowy Austria,

Ordonñez, Marko Txopitea, Werner Westermann, Gunnar Wolf.

 2011/2/9 Sebastian Silva sebast...@somosazucar.org:

 compartido:
  http://openetherpad.org/certificacion-sugarlabs

 canal
  #sugar-meeting (http://chat.sugarlabs.org/).

  Sebastian Silva

... without needing much English nor technical skills.

going to do that anyone else cannot do?

My feeling from what I read in several forums is, and please correct
 me if I am wrong:

Anyone wishing to venture beyond using the applications already offered
to the general public such as Turtleart, Scratch, Etoys and others, must be
 able to communicate in English.

It is OK if their English is a bit Tarzanesque or might smell to an
automatic translator but has to be English.

All translation efforts should be directed to final users, this is
 teachers and students.

Re: [IAEP] Sugar at FUDCon

2010-07-18 Thread Werner Westermann
Hello to all.

Sugar Labs Chile held a stand in FUDCon meeting in Santiago, showing Sugar
through XOs as well as Classmates running SoaS:

http://patricioacevedo.blogspot.com/2010/07/fedoritas-en-chile.html
http://cl.sugarlabs.org/wiki/index.php?title=Sugar_Fedora_FUDCon_2010

In a lightning talk, we asked for ways coordinating Fedora's community
contribution with Sugar development and maintenance, and coordinating
support for local deployments. We had the pleasure to meet Guillermo Gómez
(alias Gomix), a publicly known venezuelan contributor in the Fedora latam
community. Guillermo coordinates volunteer work and recruitment and had
good ideas on how to promote help on maintaining Sugar packages for Fedora
as well as development through Rpmdev project (
http://rpmdev.proyectofedora.org/).

So please feel free to coordinate efforts, and running this to other lists.

I was surprised a few weeks ago to know about FOSS advocates from

[IAEP] GCompris problems on SoaS

2010-06-17 Thread Werner Westermann
Hello, regards from Chile.

Working with a teacher, she wanted to explore GCompris activities loading
them in her SoaS, in the context of our first pilot deployment in K-3. But
there's a problem with launching those activities with this message:

Cannot find cached 0sugar-launch implementation.

It's confusing the situation, because she said the in the first instance the
activities did launch, but now they won't. I tried it out on my SoaS and
had no trouble with one GCompris activity (weigthscale), but I downloaded 2
of the and had the same problem.

Can this problem be solved in any way on the SoaS? Can we rely on using
GCompris activities in a deployment context?

Thanks for your suggestions,

We are beginning a short Sugar pilot deployment in the K-3 level (8-9

We have focused on curricular work, exploring, selecting, prioritizing Sugar
activities with the teacher. But we haven't thought of the initial encounter
with Sugar.

What do you suggest to do in class to get in touch on Sugar?, Any ideas,
metaphors that could motivate of the environments, activities, journal,
etc?, what activities to work on first?, preferring a exploratory or rather
approach at first?

Any help is very welcomed, best wishes,

identical code for collaboration and communication in the form of

difference is that at the time their presence service was not so
advanced, so Sugar has its own. Telepathy has since really mattured

Surely, I think everyone would be interested in your results!!! Can you
share them? When you talk about independence, you refer to XXI Century
Skills such as autonomy in learning, learner-centric learning?

Thanks from Chile!!!

 This literature review is fantastic.

I am a middle school science teacher in Northern Westchester County, NY,
and am also a doctoral student at Pace University. My research project is
investigating the impact of our 5th graders using the XOs (and Sugar of
 course) on their independence.

We began this project last year, and I would be happy to share the results
 if anyone is interested.

 Best,

[IAEP] Sugar evaluation and impact

2009-09-16 Thread Werner Westermann
Hello to all, regards from Santiago, Chile.

Sugar Labs Chile (http://cl.sugarlabs.org), joined with the PUCV University
(http://www.ucv.cl/) are going to build a proposal for public funding of
curricula integration of innovational technology (
http://www.enlaces.cl/index.php?t=44i=2cc=624.483tm=3), where Sugar will
be deployed in it's use for 3rd graders (8-9 year old) in 15 schools (30
courses), in disciplines to be defined (at least, Lenguage and
Communication). One of the requirements are that the technology had to be
deployed previously and had some evaluative conclusions of it's impact.

There's been a lot of announcement of different assessments of Sugar/OLPC
around the world, but I would like to have your opinion on the best
evaluations made to today. If they refer to latinamerican deployments would
be much better.

Any orientation or reference would be gladly appreciated, thanks and best
wishes,

werner

[IAEP] Sugar in Chile

2009-08-02 Thread Werner Westermann
Greetings to all.

Patricio Acevedo left the audience shocked after presenting Sugar in the 2nd
Innovation Workshop: The Creative Teacher, held in the Metropolitan
Educational University, in Santiago, Chile. The workshop strives to present
and share educational resources to support learning experiences builted by
teachers, so Patricio deployed Sugar's creative potential for teachers and
students. Many questions were asked at the end of the presentation (
http://prezi.com/139914/), by an excited audience of pedagogical carrers
students and professors. More details (in spanish):

http://www.educalibre.cl/blog/viewpost/1226.html

This is not the first time we present publicly Sugar, but it's the first
activiuty we held as Sugar Labs Chile!!! So it's our official kickoff, and
we are happy to say that things are starting to move favorably. Patricio's
presentation is another step in our effort to generate alliance with this
university. The announced Sugar pilot in Punta Arenas will start tomorrow
as the responsibles come back from winter break. We will be presenting a
formal proposal for a small deployment in Huechuraba (a local county that
has bought 2.000 Classmates), to be held in 2010. Step by step, we are
moving forward.

We want to appreciatte Bernie Innocenti's support building our wiki (
http://cl.sugarlabs.org), we wil be working on it this week. Thank you.

Best regards,

Sugar Labs Chile

[IAEP] Sugar Labs Chile proposal

2009-06-30 Thread Werner Westermann
To David Farning, best regards from Santiago, Chile.

I'd like to officially nominate Chile as a Local Lab:

http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_Labs_Chile

We, Educalibre (http://www.educalibre.cl), were hoping to be ready as a
formalized NGO, but the process will not end before 2 or 3 months (it
started August 2008). It woud be best to sign the MOU once we are
formalized completely.

But things are starting to work out with Sugar in Chile. We are starting a
pilot in Punta Arenas, where the Sugar on a Stick will be running over
Classmate 1, and another pilot is on it's way in Huechuraba County, outside
of Santiago. We have the support of interesting allies such as initiatives
related to school innovation through ICTs, universities (inlcuiding a
educational university), Intel (who's shown great interest and commitment).
This year, Classmate 1 Mobile Labs (on a cart) were distrubuted to public
schools oriented to 3rd graders, and SoaS+Classmate is seen as a great
alternative. We are also have close contact with Sugar Labs Colombia, who
are also starting to roll out pilots, and we've commited to share and build
collaborately (we are starting to design a course oriented to teacher
profesiona development, and have a basic Sugar course and agenda as well).

All of the above has pushed to finaly run Sugar Labs Chile. Hope to hear
from you soon,

werner

[IAEP] Sugar Talk to Chilean's Edu-ICT National Program

2008-09-22 Thread Werner Westermann
Regards from Santiago, Chile.

Next monday 29th, Sugar will be presented to authorities and
proffesionals of Enlaces, Chilean's governmental Edu-ICT National
Program. We are scoping to place Sugar as an alternative to a national
program that will bring ICT resources to K-3 level next year.

This presentation will be held by Pato Acevedo, who you already know in
this list for his e-Toys contributions
(http://patoacevedo.oamm.info/wordpress/). Also myself, who was asked
by Enlaces to generate a deployment project for OLPC, but was sadly
unsuccessful
(http://www.olpcnews.com/countries/chile/free_xo_laptop_children.html).

We are both participating in Educalibre (http://www.educalibre.cl/), a
recently formalized 4 year old Edu-ICT community as a ONG. We hope to
contribute from here to Sugar deployment and development.

Best wishes,
