** Very long post warning *
I thought I'd posted this before, but didn't see it in the
archives. This was originally written as a post to IBM's
internal software packaging forum on the topic of block sizes to
recommend for different system software data sets.
Jorge,
I assume you are CICS TS2.2 what version of operating system?
I am not sure but I think you need to start with a S0201 abend with MVS or
z/OS. In the MVS messages codes (or z/OS) the error indicaties:

Jorge,
One last thought, have you asked on the CICS-L list. They may have some
experience with this type of issue.

I think you missed the start of this thread. Our mainframe and our entire

that for us. Everything that we think we need we will

Don,
I know that I have searched previously for companies to do this, but I
didn't find anywhere near as many hits as I got when I entered your search
arguments. Thanks - those are a lot better than the search arguments I used
previously.
I was hoping for someone who had already done this,

Ed,
I'll look up FILETEK on Monday. $250,000 is not cheap though. Like I said
in an earlier post, we can buy a desktop 3490E drive, software, and a
connector to a PC for about $10,000. When I told our management about that,
they thought it was too expensive.

Actually, the new BrightStor Tape Encryption product gives you the ability
to encrypt as desired. There is a CA-Disk version that will encrypt all
backup tapes created by CA-Disk and there is a version that will allow you
to encrypt all tape files regardless of the creating program. No need to

John, what a great post! thorough, well-organized, mostly easy to
understand. You should consider getting a version added to the Using
Data Sets manual, or at least published as a TechNote.
A point you might want to add:

Adam,
Yes there are a few RLD, ESC, etc records and they are LE 256 bytes. However
this does not affect the blocking of the text blocks.
If, after writing a few small records a track has space remaining for a text
block up to the Max block size then it will use the max block size.
