Re: XMIT manager unable to decode INMR02

2019-07-11 Thread Allan Staller
Input/Output to XMIT be any of the "standard" file formats. Attributes will be
restored during the RECEIVE process.
XMIT will convert the "input file" to FB/80.

What XMIT cannot handle is any file format other that FB/80 for the converted
file.

Re: XMIT manager unable to decode INMR02

I have most often seen this where there an intervening non-Z/OS box in the
transfer.
However, this could even occur w/ z/OS-Z/OS transfers.

I suggest you re-send the file from the original source with any intervening
transfers also in BINRY (MODE I (eye)).

I would browse the dataset on the Mainframe and make sure the file is intact.

The first couple of records should have INR0 in the beginning of the line

If it does not - then it is not an XMI file.

Next on the mainframe do a RECEIVE of the file and see if there are any errors
during that process.

Do you mean UTF-8 or UTF-EBCDIC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-EBCDIC)?

UTF-8, I didn't even know there was something like UTF-EBCDIC!

Flow is UTF-8 (on a white box) -> IND$FILE -> lots of gibberish on z/OS ->
process -> processed gibberish -> IND$FILE -> nice unchanged UTF-8, at least
when extracted with XMIT Manager and its CP1046.9921875 codepage

Processing on z/OS doesn't touch the gibberish itself, it only has to calculate
the actual length in UFT-8 characters, and that's done using the translate and
sum PL/I builtins, using metadata in the original (white box) input file.

his XmitApp, a platform-agnostic, it's written in Java, viewer for XMIT files,
see

As is, it (currently) only shows the contents of the xmit file in one of the
panels, and he's hit a snag. One of my PDS's he's using contains text that comes
from uploaded-to-z/OS UTF-8 encoded text (which basically means all UTF-8
characters are mangled beyond recognition on z/OS). It's processed on z/OS, and
the results, also containing UTF-8 encoded text is downloaded to Windoze
(unmangling the mangled mess again), but XmitApp using CP1047 screws up
codepoints 0x15 and 0x25, and if you take a look at those two code points on
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBCDIC_1047>, shiver...

0x15 is NL (Newline) (Unicode 0085)
0x25 is LF (Linefeed) (Unicode 000A)

I never realised that EBCDIC had two of the same, just different...

Extract the files with Neil Johnston-Ward's XMIT Manager from the cbttape.org
site @ , and the UTF-8 encoded characters
show up OK. Do it with the official CP1047 and they don't.

So load XMIT Manager.exe into a hex-editor, I'm (still) using HxD 1.7.7.0 from
, and look for the translate table NJW uses (just
do a find for 'abcdef') and you'll see that he has swapped the ASCII characters
for the 0x15 and 0x25 code points from those in the "official" CP1047...

Denis has found an APAR dating back to 2010,
, that seems to
confirm that, for Java in mixed environments, i.e. z/OS vs little white boxes,
NJW is correct in swapping them.

Can anyone provide any more insights? For what it's worth, I'm currently
restricted to doing the round-trip transfers using IND$FILE (Upload as ASCII,
download of XMIT (obviously) binary), but I would appreciate if anyone can check
what happens if they are done using FTP or the WSA. I've attached, in the hope
it survives, utf-8.zip.txt with a bit of UTF-8 encoded data to experiment with.
It's all the UTF-8 encoded data that's in use in the test file, and consists of
European (and a few Japanese) place names.

Do you mean UTF-8 or UTF-EBCDIC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-EBCDIC)?

Bad history; bad IBM.

Throughout history, EBCDIC has had NL at 0x15 and LF at 0x25. ASCII had only
LF and used CR-LF for the effect of NL.

Early console printers used NL as an EBCDIC line separator. CP-67 used NL as a
command separator. The first mainframe C processors (I believe ISVs preceded
IBM) rendered "\n" as NL (0x15). This does not violate the ANSI C
specification.

With the advent of UNIX System Services (IBM by then had its own C compiler)
IBM decided the path of least resistance was to violate its own standard and
swap LF and NL in ASCII<->EBCDIC conversions. CMS Pipelines A2E and E2A
filters perform no such swap. iconv(1) on IBM is thus incompatible with
iconv(1)
on Linux. The latter obeys IBM's specification which IBM violates.

Shame on IBM!

Thanks Sam. It works fine on my 64-bit Windows 8 laptop.

Hi Folks,

I had placed this version on File 916 of the CBT Tape, but it needs
a mainframe to load it up to, and then to FTP down to a PC. (At least I
archived the thing so it wouldn't disappear. Robert had originally put
it on the files of H390-MVS on yahoogroups, but things don't stay there
forever as more files are loaded up)

Anyway, I made an attempt to make this package available on the
www.cbttape.org website, maybe not in the best manner, but I myself was
able to install it from there on a 64-bit Windows system.

How do you get it? Go to www.cbttape.org, and click on XMIT-Manager
at the upper left side of the screen. Look at the resulting screen.
Notice that I replaced the defunct UK download site for XMIT-Manager-V3,
with a link to this program that says XmitMgr-64bit. Just click on that
link to download it, unzip, point to Xmit Manager.exe and run it. Maybe
I will polish this up later, or Sam K will, but at least it's out there
now for people to access and use.

All the best of everything to all of you...

One could try to get permission to use specific media like pendrive to

Or maybe (actually it's not) it would help to create small .BAT script

1) Under Win7 you can setup and run a WinXP Virtual Machine. A free XP

should be able to install and run old software in the XP VM. I've had to do
that with a number of packages. It's a bit slow starting up the VM but runs

2) Find an already installed version of XMIT under XP and copy it from the

Re: XMIT Manager

2013-05-17 Thread Farley, Peter x23353
The problem is that the installer software is 16-bit. XMIT Manager itself is
32-bit and runs without a problem on 64-bit systems. You just cannot use the
installer to put it on your new machine, you have to do it manually from an
existing installation on an XP or lower-level system.

Copy the folder on your old machine which contains the XMIT manager software
(probably under C:\Program Files) to a USB stick and write it in a new folder
on your 64-bit system in the C:\Program Files (x86) folder.

Then if you want you can create a shortcut to the EXE file and cut-n-paste the
shortcut to your desktop.

Finally, add .XMI and .XMIT extensions to the folder view options and point
to the XMIT Manager executable as the one to handle such files. Now you can
just double-click on an XMIT file and it will open.

Re: XMIT Manager

2013-05-17 Thread Lloyd Fuller
The problem is not the executable. The real 64-bit problem is in the
installer. The installer that is used with XMIT only installs to 32-bit based
Windows.

If someone updated the installer to a newer version, things would be fine.

So copying the XMIT directory works except you don't get all of the links done.

Lloyd

There is another XMIT utility called unXmit. It runs on 64bits machines and
support all Windows versions.

It can be downloaded

And it supports xmit PDSE files.

So as others have suggested copy XMITMGR.EXE from an XP system and store it
in Program Field (x86) on the Windows 7 machine and you should be fine.

Maybe we can get Sam to package the XP version of the program on the CBTTAPE
less the installer.

Then this would not be an issue

There was a person who offered to re-package the XMIT software in a more
current installer a few years back, but IIRC when he contacted the author he
could not get permission to do so.

I do not believe that the original author is interested in any update of the
software, but I am willing to be proven wrong. No source is available, as far

There is/was an analogue called unXMIT, written in Java, perhaps available

The open-source portable unXMIT is very encouraging. I know the
programmer, DeWitt Knapp and he's a great guy, so hopefully this will be a
good option going forward.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/unxmit

It is written in Java using the portable Eclipse RCP/SWT framework, and
there are packages for Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. The source is also
available under GPLv3, so if you don't like it you have the freedom to
change it.
