i was able to see the problem and what happens is the actual documents
don't open and freeze the computer. i thought it was the icon, but it
is not. the icons still point to the original software, so they
haven't been highjacked by other software.
when you try to open the

Make sure that some other program hasn't taken over the file types
in question...in other works the icons aren't 'corrupted' just
different.

my thanks to all of you who helped me with my aunt's imac. we found
out it was indeed the power supply and were very lucky to find a used
working one locally. the machine is up and running and my aunt is very

conundrum: her imac g 5 code name hero, 1.8 ghz, running some version
of os 10.3 and maybe 2gb ram is turning itself off and when it does
you can hear a faint click.
i live 2 hours away and have not seen

acquainted with the beach ball in ways i would rather forget. it is so
