On Tuesday,
I can't be sure, but maybe you need to delete some files left from previous
installation. Look at the output from:
sudo service influxdb status
In my case, the solution was to delete the file:
/var/lib/influxdb/meta/raft.db
Hope this helps.

Hi,
I have a similar problem.
After installing influxdb form the ubuntu repository I wanted to replace it by
the newest version form influxdb.com.
After uninstalling the old version, I tried "sudo dpkg -i
influxdb_1.1.1_amd64.deb". But I get an error:
henp@DESMUCDEV01:~$ sudo dpkg -i
Mystery solved.
Indeed, it was a clean install of InfluxDB 1.1.0 on a "fresh" Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
What I didn't know was that version 0.10 had already been installed from the
Ubuntu repository and then uninstalled. Apparently, the uninstall did not
remove everything.
Thank you for the help.

Was this an upgrade of InfluxDB? The `/var/lib/influxdb/meta/raft.db` file
was removed with the 0.13 release, so it shouldn't be present in a 1.1.0
installation. Upgrading from pre-1.0 versions typically require extra steps
that are documented here
Followup:
for unknonw reasons I had to delete the file
/var/lib/influxdb/meta/raft.db
then
sudo service influxdb start
worked as expected.
Looks like some script inside the DEB is not correct.
