Re: [IRCA] Simple phasing setup

2008-12-02 Thread Craig Healy
I was thinking about standing a 8' piece of thinwall conduit up
  in the corner..

The schematic is just a quick diagram. Loaded equally the full length.
When you say conduit, I assume you don't mean metal. That probably
wouldn't
work. Another thing that would work is a flat piece of wood. Could
probably hide it in a closet or behind a curtain.

Just to clarify.. I was thinking about a support for a wire-wound loaded
vertical. Winding wire on a metal support probably wouldn't work. Winding
wire on a flat wood board would be OK.

Obviously a piece of metal standing in a corner can work, but it will need a
ground. That was the whole idea of creating a vertical as a dipole with the
feed taken from the middle.

[IRCA] TP for 2 Dec from Victoria, BC

2008-12-02 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Things improved somewhat this morning, though initially didn't look that great
before 1500UT; 774 didn't come up to full strength until after 1510UT, and was
never consistently at the level it was last weekend. Most of the DX this
morning came from using the DX Fishbarrel, and tuning to things as they briefly
faded up, mostly during a weak sunrise enhance around 1530UT

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

774 JOUB after 1511
828 JOBB with someone else Asiatic at 1526UT
972 HLCA
1566 HLAZ by 1530UT

(972 was still delivering audio traces at 1740UT)

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

747 JOIB
1134 Korea //972 at 1531UT, KK talk by woman
1206 usual rough audio. Haven't figured out yet if the apparent jammer with it
is just IBOC from KEX; it's still pretty strong with KEX somewhat nulled on the
northerly Flag

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

279 R. Rossii; good carrier
567 JOIK //594 at 1527
594 JOAK
639 CNR1 //5030 at 1528UT, but someone else there also
693 JOAB //774 at 1512
873 JOGB //774
1323 CRI w/RR talk
1377 CNR1 //5030 at 1538UT
1575 likely Thailand

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

153 and 189 R. Rossii //279
666 JOBK seemed //594
855 mx u/big hum; no SW // audible, but assumed N. Korea
864 good carrier, low modulation?
936
945 CNR1 //5030 at 1520UT
1026
1035
1044
1242
1278
1287 big carrier
1305
1422
1467
1593

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 738
mostly DU, 1098 DU/Asia mix, 1188 1224 1314 1404

best wishes,

Nick

Only checked 1566 and 1575 this morning after 16:00 and 1566 was a strong 9,
while 1575 was VOA at a 7 to 8 level. While I was in Winter Harbour this

[IRCA] E100 Debocked Slider on the DXer.ca test bench

For starters, Santa's reindeer are actually named...

Dxer, Dancer, Lurker, Dxing, Gonset, Filament, Scanner and Phasing...

Santa's real name is Gary
and he delivered one of many gifts early this year --
in the guise of one Super-modifed E100 Slider...

Which will be hitting the DXer.ca test bench tonight.

If there was a radio good-will awards ceremony held,
there could only be one winner;

[IRCA] That time of year...

2008-12-02 Thread cafe
Twas the night before the doldrums, when all through the shack
The beverages were strung, without a single inch of slack; The loopsticks were
hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that a grayzone soon would be there;

The listeners were nestled all snug in their beds, With noise canceling
headsets attached to their heads;
With Walt in his PJ's, my Asus Eee in my lap, I looked at the indices and said
Oh dear crap!
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the Yurt to see
what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the canvas and threw up the
sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave the lustre of copper to the
wires below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should snoop, But 4 miniature Wellbrook, and
eight tiny loops,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be
Hall-Patch, the Nick.
More rapid than sea gulls his signal reports they came, And he whistled, and
shouted, and called them by name;
Now, Japan! now Korea! now, Farda and India! Come On, Dakar! Come on Iceland !
now Greenland and Ireland!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now log them one and log them
all!

Nick was dressed all in gingham, from his head to his foot, And his clothes
were all bought, in the seventies, from loot;
A bundle of cables he had flung on his back, And he looked like a junkie eying
some smack.

His eyes -- how they glistened! with tears in his eyes! He too heard the A/K
index and his throat filled with cries!

The handle of an iron he held tight in his teeth, And the solder smoke, it
encircled his head like a wreath;
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old dude, And I laughed when I saw him,
and thought, jeeze how rude!

A wink of his eye and a twist of his gun, Soon gave me to know the soldering
was done;
He spoke not a word, but went straight without lag, And terminated all the
beverages ; then turned to the Flags,

And laying his finger inside of his nose, And giving a great sniff, up the fir
tree he rose;
He sprang to his bunk, to his team gave a warning, And they lept out of bed and
quickly were tuning.

But I heard him exclaim, as he dove out of sight, Best DX to the lot of you and
to the lot of you good night!

This station has a HISTORY of not using night power, and when in Gastonia,
received a hefty fine. Did it stop them? NO. And the Norfolk FCC office is very

friend of mine with a 1370 in NE Georgia screamed at the FCC for most of a year

Re: [IRCA] Simple phasing setup

2008-12-02 Thread Craig Healy
Here are some pictures of the phasing system. First, the vertical antenna.
Took ten minutes to make. Seriously ugly...

http://www.am-dx.com/Graphics/vertical1.jpg

Next, a couple of shots of the combiner as I use in the truck. This is a
more elaborate version of the one shown in the schematic. This has pots for
both antennas, plus a 0/180 degree switch for the loop. Since the loop pot
is always at full CW, it isn't needed. The 0/180 degree switch is also not
needed because simply turning the loop 180 degrees does the same thing.

http://www.am-dx.com/Graphics/combiner_inside.jpg

http://www.am-dx.com/Graphics/combiner_outside.jpg

I'll write up a more detailed article when I get some time. Hope it's
useful to y'all!

I have played with a lot of super-modified radios in my time...

But the Eton E100 Slider (By Atkins, Ratzlaff, Bryant and DeBock...)
is utterly staggering.

And for the record, I have NEVER used the term staggering
where radios are concerned... ever...

Except for a couple of mind blowing TA openings in 1976.

To be honest, I was skeptical at first - the hype surrounding
a lot of stock ULrs being what it is...
but after turning on the E100 and tuning in something AND
then tweaking the loop... I was blown to the floor with the
sheer force of this thing...

Staggered.

More later,

Best I have ever heard them. A New country for me! Thanks so much for
the tip Nick!!!

Glad to help, Patrick...

It's an interesting evening, have heard bits of audio on 702, 756, 864, 999,
1215 as well as 1134 and 1575, but reception is really spotty. 702 looks
intriguing, has had a good carrier much of the time.

best wishes,

Nick

1134 was roaring in for a bit with a pop song.Craig in RI (via #mwdx) was
hearing it fading up at the same time, and fading down, though it's still quite
readable here

Re: [IRCA] TA, 3 Dec, Victoria, BC; fading down

2008-12-02 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Just after 0435UT, things started dropping in strength quite badly, no more
audios at least for a bit, though at 0445, Absolute R. came back for a bit,
barely there in the splash. 999 has disappeared, almost like it signed off.

best wishes,

Nick

What seems interesting to me, is that on many a night, that started so
promising, things fizzle out about midway into the evening. If we're lucky,
the Asiatic LW Russians and later the TP Japanese will fade in. I'd like to
know why the Euros so frequently fizzle out!..Walt.

Re: [IRCA] R. Farda-1575 (NE Oregon too)

2008-12-02 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
I had 1575 R.Farda longer than I've ever had it before, this evening, and
longer than any other MW TP or TA signal that I can remember receiving. (Not
that I get any MW TP/TA all that well here). 0047 first tuned in and heard
it, still fading up at 0127 utc.
1539 also with audio though very poor, 0120 first noted. 1134 at 0323 utc
playing pop music. This evening was the best MW TA conditions ever for me,
in my limited several years of trying.
Right now, 0715 utc, Radio Rossii 153, 171, 180, 189, 234, 279--189 and 180
the best, then 153, then 234, then 279 then 171. Weak het on 164 Mongolia.
