Thanks for the report Nick. I wondered the same regarding my inability to
elicit anything more than hets from the DU frequencies you thoughtfully
suggested. I am considering another TP DX sojourn to the NW later this year. In
the interim, I'm excited to sample the DX

A belated thank you to Craig and Walt for their DXpedition reports

First noted Tonga with quite a good signal, island music and talk
before 0600UT.
Then, after 1300UT quite a lot of Japanese,

In the real world, culturally, AM passed its peak decades ago. For most
people under a certain age, AM is either unknown or irrelevant.
The industry seems to always have the same answers - more stations, more
power, fewer regulations - the last being the staple of pretty much any
industry you can

Many a cold winter night I tried to log WGTO (540 FL) here in SoCal but no

Dave,
Thank you for the effort—I’m sure all DX’ers appreciate it.

In reading my post about KCEY it says 1959 - should say 1969. Sorry

My longest distance GYer is probably WNUE 1400 Ft. Walton Bch, Fl, here from
Oregon in 1971 for a DX Test. The second would be 1450 Granby Q Canada, but
they were running more power.

Free is always good. Like here we also have 5 Portland translators giving us 16
OTA TV channels for free. Radio is the same, however I think there are too many
stations to support them all. I could have Sirius XM in the van, why bother? I
have the radio & CD. I can record any music I want to

We appreciate the effort. Always nice to have a (rare these days) DX test, but
sometimes it just isn't to be. Sad to see a legendary station like this one
come to an end. That's our AM band, always in transition. Old stations go away
and new ones are being born.

I would much rather keep FREE radio alive then go to paid subscriber services.
Those are fine and well if you want them and don't mind paying the extra bucks.

My best two catches on the AM band are KCEY 1390, Turlock CA in February
1959. At that time I lived in Chesapeake, VA and was using a Hallicrafters
S-120 with a simple long wire about 30 feet long and maybe 10 feet in the
air. The verification letter (which I still have) states that I was the

I tried for a last minute test from WFLI 1070-TN but no go. I called a

it on "full power for 15-20 minutes but this engineer

Growing up not too far south of Cassopolis, across the state line in

They all either worked on cars themselves, or were directly related to
someone who worked on cars. So yeah, not only Cass, but I'd say the

Another one bites the dust...Even though 82% of people in cars listen to radio

there is just not enough ad money to go around. Here we still have the three
AMs in the county, but two of them have FM Translators now.
