Thanks Nick,

Yes, those were the same 864 pips that I heard at 1400, Nick.

I had somewhat more noise here than you did, but I'll try to dig out a
recording. Regardless, any time a DXer can receive something on 864 around
Tacoma (WA) without any IBOC noise is a time for celebration!

Here, those pips were preceded by a DXer friendly female announcer,
slowly giving the call letters, but I wish the propagation gods had

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 3-18

2018-03-18 Thread Gary DeBock
Asian propagation improved pretty dramatically on the low band just prior to
daybreak this morning, with decent audio from all the usual big guns and
several second-tier Asians. In comparison to yesterday the high band seemed to
drop off somewhat, though. without any special signals on 1593 or other
frequencies.

Although a propagation check at 1030 revealed pretty anemic conditions (with
only weak audio from 594) the ionosphere must have gotten some kind of a boost
before 1300, since the Koreans on 603, 657 and 972 were all doing quite well
about an hour prior to daybreak. The Japanese big guns were just getting
untracked, with 594, 693 and 747 all building up strength. 657-Pyongyang had
some pretty obnoxious peaks just prior to its 1330 "TOH," with a trace of China
underneath. In a similar situation 603-HLSA's female Korean announcer was doing
quite well around 1340, also with a trace of China underneath. By 1340 all the
usual NHK big guns had built up strength, reaching the same level as 972 on
peaks. A check of the high band at this time revealed weak signals on 1566,
1575 and 1593, all much weaker than yesterday at that time. 738-BEL2 made a
modest run in the KCBS splatter just prior to 1400, but it was nothing to shout
about. Probably the most interesting discovery this morning
were weak Asian signals on 837 and 864 around the 1400 TOH-- as Pete Taylor
had mentioned previously, 850-KHHO's IBOC is now turned off, opening up those
two frequencies for DXing here in the South Sound. 864 had Asian-style time
pips at the 1400 TOH, but there just wasn't enough signal for language
recognition. No matter-- after the demise of KHHO's IBOC, we will be thankful
anyway for two more TP-DX frequencies :-)

With Bill's recent success with Cambodia and Burma, maybe he would be a natural

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 3-18

2018-03-13 Thread Gary DeBock
Wow! Pretty exceptional conditions prevailed for both the big gun TP's and
several second tier stations as well-- during both the predawn darkness and
sunrise enhancement. 657-Pyongyang hit an S9 level here just before 1300, while
potent Chinese stations showed up on 603 and 738 around the same time.

During antenna testing in the predawn darkness at 1030 the Korean big gun
972-HLCA was already at an S9 level, so it was obvious that conditions were
well enhanced over yesterday. By 1300 there was an S7 mix of China and HLSA,
while 738-BEL2 started managing peaks of the same strength (which would
continue until 1415). 936-China (Anhui?) produced weak audio around the same
time, while 657-Pyongyang managed another S9 peak with its 3+1 pips at 1330.
All the while the big guns on 594, 693, 747 and 972 were at S9 peaks in and
out, with 774 and 828 not far behind. By 1400 (daybreak here) 603 had become a
real battleground, with China finally taking over at an S7 level. The
watered-down Puyallup version of sunrise enhancement lasted until around 1420
this morning, with 594 and 972 still at S9 peaks around 1415, when they pretty
rapidly succumbed to the propagation reaper. Overall it was an excellent
morning-- easily one of the best of the year so far.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 3-18

2015-03-18 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

Yes, Nick, propagation did fall off of a cliff yesterday (the place where live
DXers sink or swim, depending upon their own frequency choices... or maybe
that's a bad analogy?).

TP propagation did make a modest recovery here this morning, with conditions in
a transition between auroral and normal. 1566-HLAZ managed a few fair peaks
during its Japanese service from 1330-1340, and a presumed 1575-VOA also
reached threshold level at the same time. 738-Tahiti's male and female French
news reached a poor but steady level from 1400-1405, but that was about it for
a very short session (from 1335-1410). After yesterday's total shutout even
these modest TP results were unexpected.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 3-18

2014-03-18 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

The Asian signals weren't quite up to yesterday's standard this morning,
although a few low band TP's did manage some interesting signals. Sunrise
enhancement was pretty much of a fizzler, though, causing the band to suffer an
early demise around 1415.

At the 1305 start of the session several low band Asians were already managing
fair audio in and out, including 594-JOAK, 603-HLSA, 648-VOR, 657-Pyongyang and
747-JOIB. The 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ were also having good peaks in and out
around 1310, and the band seemed to show some promise during the predawn
darkness. At 1308 the Chinese language program from 648-VOR rose up out of the
noise to reach the best level the station has managed during the new year
(fair), while 972-HLCA and 1134-KBS joined the other big guns (594-JOAK,
693-JOAB and 747-JOIB) producing fair to good audio around 1330. On the high
band 1377-CNR1, 1503-JOUK and 1593-CNR1 started coming out of the noise with
fair audio shortly after 1330, but from this point on most of the Asians seemed
to taper off somewhat as daylight appeared. 603-HLSA was a noticeable
exception, though, seeming to get a boost with the daylight to manage fair to
good audio around the 1400 TOH (without its usual Chinese co-channel).!
Around 1410 even HLSA seemed to lose steam, though, diving into the noise
prematurely with the other Asians around 1415. The session wasn't very
memorable, although 648-VOR's fair signal at 1308 was the best that the station
has managed here since early November.
