Origins and Development of the Sufi Orders (tarékat) in Southeast Asia

Sufism and the islamization of the Archipelago

Any theory of the islamization of the Malay Archipelago will have to explain at
least why the process began when it did, instead of some centuries earlier or
later. Foreign Muslims had probably been resident in the trading ports of
Sumatra and Java for many centuries, but it is only towards the end of the 13th
century that we find traces of apparently indigenous Muslims. The first
evidence is from the north coast of Sumatra, where a few tiny Muslim kingdoms
or rather harbour states arose, Perlak and the twin kingdom of Samudra and
Pasai. During the 14th and 15th centuries, Islam gradually spread across the
coasts of Sumatra and the Malay peninsula, to the north coast of Java and to
the spice islands in the east.

The modalities of conversion are not well documented, leading to
much speculation by scholars and sometimes passionate debate.[1] The process is
unlikely to have been uniform across the Archipelago. Trade and the political
alliances of trader-kings no doubt played their parts, as did intermarriage of
rich foreign Muslim traders with the daughters of local aristocracies. In some
regions, as local sources suggest, Islam may have been spread by the sword, but
as a rule the process appears to have been a peaceful one. It is widely assumed
that Sufism and the sufi orders played crucial parts in the process.

The first centuries of islamization of Southeast Asia coincided with the period
of flourishing of medieval Sufism and the growth of the sufi orders (tarékat).
Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, who made moderate, devotional sufism acceptable to the
scholars of the Law, died in ; Ibn al-`Arabi, whose works deeply influenced
almost all later sufis, died in 1240. `Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, around whose
teaching the tarékat Qadiriyya was organised, died in 1166 and `Abd al-Qahir
al-Suhrawardi, for whom the Suhrawardiyya is named, a year later (but it is not
clear from when on we can actually speak of tarékat in these cases). Najmuddin
al-Kubra, one of the most seminal figures of Central Asian sufism, the founder
of the Kubrawiyya order and a major influence on the later Naqshbandiyya, died
in 1221. The North African Abu'l-Hasan al-Shadhili, founder of the Shadhiliyya,
died in 1258. The Rifa`iyya was definitely an order by 1320, when Ibn Battuta
gave us his description of its rituals; the
Khalwatiyya crystallized into a tarékat between 1300 and 1450. The
Naqshbandiyya was a distinct order in the lifetime of the mystic who gave it
its name, Baha'uddin Naqshband (d. 1389), and the eponymous founder of the
Shattariyya, `Abdullah al-Shattar, died in 1428-9.[2]

Islam as taught to the first Southeast Asian converts was probably
strongly coloured by sufi doctrines and practices. It has been suggested by
various scholars that this was precisely what made Islam attractive to them or,
in other words, that the development of sufism was one of the factors making
the islamisation of Southeast Asia possible. The cosmological and metaphysical
doctrines of Ibn `Arabi's sufism could easily be assimilated to Indic and
autochthonous mystical ideas prevalent in the region. The concepts of sainthood
(wilâya) and Perfect Man (insân kâmil), as has been noted by A.C. Milner,
offered local rulers a rich potential for mystical legitimation such as they
would not have found in earlier, more egalitarian Islam.[3] In the tiny
sultanate of Buton (in Southeast Celebes), the sufi doctrine of divine
emanation in seven stages was put to use as an explanation of a highly
statified society consisting of seven caste-like strata.[4]

The Australian scholar Anthony Johns has suggested that
islamization was due to active proselytization by sufi missionaries
accompanying the foreign merchants. Sufi-type preachers are in fact mentioned
in various indigenous accounts. Johns has further speculated that there was a
close connection between trade guilds, sufi orders and these preachers, that
provided the moving force behind islamization.[5] Some may find this an
attractive hypothesis; there is, however, no evidence supporting it. It is
highly doubtful whether the foreign Muslims trading with Southeast Asia were
ever organized in anything resembling guilds, and the earliest sources
mentioning sufi orders date from the late 16th century.

Indonesian Islam is until this day pervaded with a mystical
attitude and a fascination with the miraculous. Several of the great
international orders have a respectable following - some orders have hundreds
of thousands of practising

CALCUTTA, India, May 20 (Reuters) - Muslim protesters burned and
ripped U.S. flags and a boy urinated on it in eastern India on Friday,
saying Americans had desecrated the Koran.

Newsweek magazine this week issued an apology and retraction of the
report that the Muslim holy book had been desecrated by U.S.
interrogators at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The report in the magazine's May 9 issue sparked protests across the
Muslim world, from Afghanistan, where 16 people were killed and more
than 100 injured, to Pakistan, India, Indonesia and Gaza.

But anger over the report still simmers in parts of the Muslim world
where some are sceptical about the retraction.

America may be the superpower of the world but they have no right to
insult our Koran, Imam Syed Mohammed Noor Barkati told about 300
people outside a mosque in central Calcutta.

The cleric asked protesters to tear two U.S. flags, stamp on them, and
told a young boy to urinate on the flags before burning the pieces.
They also tried to set fire to an effigy of President George W. Bush.

They insulted our Koran, so this is how we insult America in public,
said Barkati.

Dozens of police watched the angry crowd but did not intervene.

The White House this week called on Newsweek to help repair damage to
the U.S. image in the Muslim world caused by its report by explaining
what happened and how the magazine got the article wrong.

[IslamCity] THE HOLY QUR'AN: TO MUSLIMS, NOT JUST A BOOK

At the birth of a Muslim child, verses of the Koran are recited into
the ear of the newborn, signifying a blessing and a hope that the holy
book will resonate strongly in that child's life.

From then on, the words of the Muslim scripture structure and shape
that life. The child learns Arabic in order to read the Koran in the
original language, perform the five daily prayers, repeat key phrases
before all significant acts and events, and make it the guide for
daily living.

In a way, the soul of the traditional Muslim is like a mosaic made up
of phrases of the Quran, writes renowned scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr
in The Heart of Islam.

For one-fifth of the world's population, those scriptures are the
literal word of God, revealed to the prophet Muhammad by the angel
Gabriel (Koran means recitation).

It is as close as you can get to the transcendent To use one
analogy, the Koran is to Islam what Jesus is to Christianity,
explains John Esposito, university professor at Georgetown University
in Washington, D.C., in an interview.

That begins to explain the intensity of street protests last week in
several Muslim countries after reports (later retracted) that US
military interrogators had desecrated the Koran. It was a reaction
that, to American sensibilities, may seem puzzling.

But Dr. Esposito says that is due partly to Western secularization and
a lost sensitivity to degrees of sacredness.

While we've become a more religious nation in one sense, we have also
become, in our sense of the sacred, less sensitive and aware, says
the author of What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam.

The sacredness of the Koran to Muslims is expressed even in their
relationship to its physical presence, Esposito says. Pious Muslims
will always put the Koran on top of everything else, in a special
place; you don't put it under books or on the floor.

It's a relationship many in the US may find surprising. We don't
understand why someone would go through the roof about desecrating a
sacred book, but we do understand why they would do so about
desecrating or burning a flag, says Esposito.

Yet he says the street riots occurred because of the political
context, too - the presence of US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq,
accusations of abuse at Abu Ghraib, and other allegations about the
detainee prison at Guantánamo.

Hurt by a sense of disdain

While most Muslims don't take to the streets, they are pained by the
disdain for Islam any desecration would entail.

The potency of the Koran for Muslims worldwide can't be denied, says
Arsalan Iftikhar, legal counsel for the Council on American-Islamic
Relations (CAIR.) Part of the problem, he says, is that Muslims sense
that many Americans still haven't distinguished between extremism and
mainstream Islam, and that they fail to recognize it as one of the
world's great religions, treasured by millions.

My love for the Koran began at a very early age - I began to learn
Arabic when I was 4 years old in order to read it, he says. That has
helped me have a much more intimate relationship with God, to read
what I believe to be God's holy book in the language it was revealed in.

The Koran deals with the nature of reality and the cosmos, moral and
spiritual lessons, laws for the individual and society.

Both its inner meaning, or spirit, and its body ... the text in the
Arabic language ... are sacred, Dr. Nasr wrote.

No matter where a Muslim lives, prayers are said in Arabic, and
translations of the Koran are seen as interpretations, with Arabic
found on the facing page. This has given rise to the art forms of
calligraphy and recitation of the Koran.

A book learned by heart

Many Muslims memorize the entire book - not quite the length of the
New Testament - which is considered a noteworthy achievement. Children
vie actively in recitation competitions.

There's a specific Islamic science called tajwid, which focuses on
recitation in a very melodic sense, and I competed in tajwid
competitions, says Mr. Iftikhar, who grew up in Chicago. There are
favorite imams around the world, and some have a 'rock star'
following. People will buy recitations because they like the sound of
his voice.

They also flock to stadiums for performances the way Americans do to
sports events or concerts.

The greatest miracle of Islam is said to be the eloquence of the
Quran, Nasr writes. Its beauty has moved Muslims and non-Muslims
through the ages and brought converts into the faith.

Aminah McCloud, professor of Islamic studies at DePaul University in
Chicago, first picked up the Koran as a teenager and read it daily for
five months. I found it an awesome

Leaked US Report Uncovers Savage Killing of Afghan Inmates
By TIM GOLDEN

Even as the young Afghan man was dying before them, his American jailers continued to torment him.
The prisoner, a slight, 22-year-old taxi driver known only as Dilawar, was hauled from his cell at the detention center in Bagram, Afghanistan, at around 2 a.m. to answer questions about a rocket attack on an American base. When he arrived in the interrogation room, an interpreter who was present said, his legs were bouncing uncontrollably in the plastic chair and his hands were numb. He had been chained by the wrists to the top of his cell for much of the previous four days.
Mr. Dilawar asked for a drink of water, and one of the two interrogators, Specialist Joshua R. Claus, 21, picked up a large plastic bottle. But first he punched a hole in the bottom, the interpreter said, so as the prisoner fumbled weakly with the cap, the water poured out over his orange prison scrubs. The soldier then grabbed the bottle back and began squirting the water forcefully into Mr. Dilawar's face.
"Come on, drink!" the interpreter said Specialist Claus had shouted, as the prisoner gagged on the spray. "Drink!"
At the interrogators' behest, a guard tried to force the young man to his knees. But his legs, which had been pummeled by guards for several days, could no longer bend. An interrogator told Mr. Dilawar that he could see a doctor after they finished with him. When he was finally sent back to his cell, though, the guards were instructed only to chain the prisoner back to the ceiling.
"Leave him up," one of the guards quoted Specialist Claus as saying.

Orthodox Christian Girl Explains her Conversion to Islam:

I was struck by the Quranic Verses on
Jesus and the Virgin Mary

What is the biggest tragedy in the world? Who suffered the most
touching end on this earth? Believe it or not, in my opinion, it was
Toltstoy who went through the biggest tragedy.

What a touching one end it was, what a heart wrenching end. The few
lines introducing him usually say: "Tolstoy's inner search and
struggle to reach Allah lasted his entire life-span. He was not
understood throughout his life. His wife and closest relatives are
among those who did not understand him. This man, who felt a burning
desire to search throughout his life, ran away at the age of 82 on a
rainy night and fell ill. On October 7, 1910, in a modest railway
station, he passed away just as he was about to take off for the first
stop toward his destination, Istanbul. Where was he heading to,
Sultanahmet or Eyupsultan? Was he running away from the void inside of
him? Or was his quest to go and meet Rab in sujud (prostration) where
the foreheads shine with the purest tawhid (belief in the unity of
Allah).. O! What a touching end his was. They say, "Those who have not
tasted wouldn't know," I alone know of this unfortunate genius.

I was secretly baptized

I was born to a father whose belief was not strong and a plain
Orthodox mother in Ukraine. My father had secretly baptized me in a
village church. I grew up with a belief in only one-God (monotheism)
despite communism's prohibitions. I used to love Easter. I would try
to fast the 40 days before Easter as much as I could. As a family, we
used to wait for Maundy Thursday before Easter. "Who am I? What is my
purpose? Where did I come from? These did not make sense to me back
then. I only wanted to prepare for a good future by studying at a good
university--that was all. Following my quite bright school years, I
studied Management in English at the best university in the country.
Life passed quite beautifully until I turned 20.

At that point, I fell into a trap of tough questions. Thousands of
questions flocked into my mind like so many grasshoppers. God, Jesus,
humans, the world, life, death, paradise, hell, eternity, coincidence,
nature…then absence, an eternal one. All these thoughts become a leech
that sucked my brains out, but I could not find answers to them. I was
feeling all alone in a dark room. Every time I made a great leap
forward to get out, I would roll back into an infinite void. I was
spiraling down. There was neither a light nor a branch to hold on to.
Worst of all, I could not make my voice heard by any ears (if they had
heard my screams, even the lions would have been badly frightened). No
one around me understood me, so they could not help me. They kept
saying:

[IslamCity] ISL: The Role of Women in the Call of Islam

The Role of Women in the Call of IslamDr. Mohammed H. Khlais Al-Harbi, Arab News

Women had a vital role in spreading the message of God. Throughout history women had participated in the intellectual and political struggle enduring all sorts of torture and intimidation. They spoke boldly and called for the true religion without fearing the loss of power or wealth. Lady Maryam (Mary), the mother of Jesus, is honored in the Qur’an and was revered by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). She is depicted in the Qur’an as an ideal model of virtue not only for women but for all mankind.
God addressed men and women alike. Historically, many women had played effective roles in the lives of prophets and their missions. They had their share in the Muslim society at all levels. This is illustrated in the story of Prophet Ibrahim who struggled against his people in Babylon, Iraq, fought Nimrod and was saved from fire by a miracle. He then migrated to Syria, then Egypt, with his faithful wife and companion Sarah. The Qur’an describes this trip and tells about the effective role of Hajara, Ibrahim’s second wife who came with him from Egypt to Hejaz. Hajara was the symbol of a woman with deep faith and endless patience, and she raised her son, Prophet Ismail in that valley to be the ancestor of the greatest Prophet Muhammad. The Qur’an says: “O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in a valley without cultivation, by Thy Sacred House” (Ibrahim: 37).
The Qur’an mentions the mother of Prophet Musa and describes how she understood the divine message and protected Musa against the tyranny of Fir’aun. Then Maryam, the mother of Jesus and Asya, the wife of Fir’aun are both set forth by God as examples to be followed by all those who believe. The verses say:
“And Allah sets forth, as an example to those who believe, the wife of Fir’aun: When she said; “O my Lord! Build for me, in nearness to Thee, a mansion in the Garden, and save me from Fir’aun and his doings, and save me from those that do wrong”; And Maryam, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity; and We breathed into (her body) of Our spirit; and she testified to the truth of the words of her Lord and of His Revelations, and was one of the devout (Servants).” (Prohibition: 11-12).
The fact that “Allah set forth” “an example to those who believe” proves a unique concept of faith related to woman: A role model for males and females. The wife of Fir’aun faced the power of that mighty ruler, and Maryam stood against the arrogance of the children of Israel and their plots against her. Similar to the important roles played in the lives of Ibrahim, Musa and Isa (Jesus) is Khadijah’s in the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Khadijah who was a noble and rich social figure in Makkah was the second person — after Ali — to embrace Islam, and she supported the Prophet all her life enduring all persecution and hardships. This is why the Prophet described the year in which she died as the Year of Grief. The Prophet described Khadijah’s role and his respect for her several times. He also mentions his other wife, Ayshah and his daughter Fatimah. These sayings reflect the Prophet’s and Islam’s acknowledgement of the importance of women to the human race.
Islam respects woman for her vital role in protecting and supporting the prophets, notably Ibrahim, Musa, Ismail, Isa and Muhammad.
Allah in the Qur’an mentions women who received the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings, migrated to Madinah with him, and strived to support Islam. The verses that mention women in general are abundant, such as: “The Believers, men and women, are protectors, one of another: They enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil!” (Repentance: 71).
“O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in Faith, and (all) believing men and believing women: And to the wrongdoers grant Thou no increase but in Perdition! (Noah: 28).
“One Day shalt thou sea the believing men and the believing women; how their Light runs forward before them.” (Iron:12). In these verses women are exalted to the noblest position a human being can have on earth and in the hereafter. Under the mission of Islam, males and females are considered peers that collaborate in faith to reform society, combat vice, and crime and promote virtue, peace and prosperity on earth.
The Qur’an describes the aura of glory around all believers, men and women, on the Day of Judgment facing the Lord and being rewarded for their deeds on earth.
A manifestation of the nobility of woman’s position in Islam is the fact that the first martyr in Islam was a female. Umm (mother of) Ammar ibn Yassir who was a companion of the Prophet. She was killed by Abu Jahl, a polytheist leader. All the oppressed and persecuted found in Islam salvation of their human rights and liberation from ignorance and fellowmen’s slavery. Many wronged women believed in the Prophet’s teachings at the onset of

Koran Ordered Online Contains Hate Slogans

Amazon.com doesn't know how it happened but has apologized to the UCLA student.By Teresa Watanabe, Times Staff Writer
A Culver City woman said Wednesday that a secondhand Koran she ordered through a book dealer working with Amazon.com contained anti-Islamic hate messages, including profanity and "Death to all Muslims!" Azza Basarudin, a 30-year-old UCLA graduate student, said Amazon apologized, sent a new book and offered her a refund and gift certificate. But she and the Muslim Public Affairs Council called on the online bookseller to do more, including issuing a public condemnation of anti-Muslim hate speech and cutting commercial ties with the Pennsylvania-based book dealer that sent the Koran.Holding up the book to display the messages at a news conference Wednesday, Basarudin said the incident resurrected the fear she felt after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when anxiety about anti-Muslim sentiment made her reluctant to leave her apartment for two weeks. "I was taken back to 9/11, my fear that somebody is going to hurt me," Basarudin
said at the Islamic Center of Southern California in Los Angeles. "I felt that fear coming back. It really hurt me."Amazon spokeswoman Patty Smith called the incident "appalling." She said the Seattle-based firm had worked with the book dealer, Bellwether Books, to strengthen quality-control checks and suspended it from selling Korans on Amazon's website. "We're deeply sorry and we think we've taken all appropriate steps to make sure this is not done again," Smith said. The Los Angeles-based Muslim council also released a hate message left on the voicemail of the Islamic Center on Saturday. In a taunting tone, the caller said he had just used the Koran in the bathroom and flushed it down the toilet. The Southern California incidents followed an international furor over reports that U.S. military interrogators had flushed a Koran down the toilet to unnerve prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. The reports, which Newsweek magazine first
reported then retracted this week, helped spark anti-American violence that led to deaths in Afghanistan. The Council on American-Islamic Relations released a study last week that showed reported hate crimes against Muslims nationwide in 2004 increased 52% over the previous year, to 141 incidents. There was also a 49% increase in alleged civil rights violations, to 1,522. "This is not an isolated incident," said Salam Al Marayati, director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, of Basarudin's experience. "This is a culture of hatred [spread] through … schools, government and here through a bookseller."Bellwether President Richard Roberts said an internal investigation did not determine how the Koran came to be defaced. He said his firm's nine employees denied writing the messages and said they did not notice them when they shipped the book.Roberts said the firm ships about 400 books a day and that packing orders are typically slipped into books without
closely checking their content. In the wake of the incident, the firm assigned a quality control officer to rigorously check incoming and outgoing books, he said. Both Roberts and Smith said if any employees were discovered to be involved, they would be fired. Smith also said that Amazon would banish Bellwether from its website if a similar problem occurred again. But she said the retailer had a "spotless" record and was highly rated by more than 11,000 customers.

[IslamCity] Questions on internet relation

2005-05-24 Thread Mohammed Irfanullah

Question :
PLEASE HELP, ITS URGENT! (May Allah make you see this). I need your advice, I became Muslim 4 years ago, I got married 3 years ago (or there abouts). I do not live with my husband as our marriage is secret, his parents do not know about me yet. Anyway the point is, I do not get to see my husband as often as I would like, and as a result I became lonely, and in my stupidity and selfishness and inpatience, I started to speak to NON MAHRAMS over the internet (May Allah forgive me). I spoke you quite a few of them, and told them I was not married, and to some of them I said I was divorced or getting divorced. Also I gave one of them an old picture of me without hijab, My hair, neck and arms were uncovered!!! This was all months ago, and I have repented for my crimes, and I have cried for fear of my grave and the Day of Judgement. I fear Allah so much and have cut off all ties with these people, I no longer speak to any men over the
internet as I know Shaytaan temps human beings. I am truly ashamed of what I have done, and feel so guilty for it. I love my husband and he is going to tell his family about me soon inshaAllah. But I do not want to hurt him or embarrass him by having to call things off because of what I have done, I do not want to lose him. Do I have to tell him what I have done??? And what about the Photo, I hate what I did, but what if the boy still has it Will I go to hell? And as for me telling people I was divorced or getting divorced, is my marriage still valid??? I know I have ruined my life, but please help me, Allah knows best my intentions, I do not want to hurt anyone or do wrong in the sight of Allah. I want to do what is best for everyone concerned, I want to cover myself, can I do this. Please help me as I'm in so much pain. Answer :
Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:
Praise be to Allaah Who has guided you to Islam. Allaah has chosen you to be one of the followers of this great message, which is one of the greatest means of attaining goodness and happiness in this life and in the Hereafter. You must always remember this great blessing of which many are deprived, and express your gratitude to Allaah both inwardly and outwardly.
Secondly:
Praise be to Allaah Who has blessed you with a Muslim husband, although we wish that it was a marriage in which your husband is not far away from you, and that his family knew about it. The fact that your husband has hidden this marriage from his family and has kept away from you played a major role in what happened to you. You must hasten to set this matter straight, by asking him to make your marriage known and to hasten to tell his family; he should also stay by your side to help you to obey Allaah, may He be exalted. He should fear Allaah with regard to you and not expose you to temptation. He should pay attention to this responsibility which rests on his shoulders.
Thirdly:
Praise be to Allaah Who has enabled you to repent and turn back to Him before you became immersed in sin or did anything worse than that. The Shaytaan makes sin appear attractive to the one who does it, but if you remember the punishment for doing it and the reward that is with Allaah for not doing it, and remember what Allaah has prepared in the Hereafter for those who are obedient, you will realize that what is with Allaah is better and more lasting, and that no matter what pleasure a person may get from sinning, it will end up in distress and hardship in this world and punishment in the Hereafter. So continue to repent and regret what you did, and resolve firmly never to go back to it. Do voluntary acts of worship to make up for what you have missed and to draw closer to Allaah and earn more reward.
Fourthly:
It is essential for you to close the door to the temptations which led you to sin. What we mean by that is those chats. You have to keep away from those sinful chats with men altogether. It is not permissible for you to enter chat rooms or correspond with them or talk to them. If you have their names on “Messenger” then you must hasten to erase their names.
If you fear that logging onto the internet will lead you to chatting with them, then you must keep away from the internet altogether and content yourself with useful audio tapes, reading useful books, and looking for righteous female friends who will guide you to what is good and keep you away from evil.
Another requirement of sincere repentance is that it should be accompanied by regret and resolve not to go back to that sin; you should also keep away from other tempting sites and sites that are haraam or that promote idleness and immorality.
If you devote your time to listening to useful tapes, reading useful books and reading answers and articles on Islamic websites that are known to follow correct beliefs and the correct path, this will be sufficient for you as long as you live. How can you waste your life in things that are of no benefit when you have before you a treasure of

MUSLIM BABY IN NEED OF FOSTER PARENTS
Asalaam Aleikum Brother and Sisters:

We have yet again another CAS child in need of a Muslim foster parent. It
my understanding that this baby's parents (originally from Iraq) do not
want the child in their care and as a result, they have agreed to sign off
their
parental rights. Baby Mohamed has a severe disability and is currently
placed in a non-muslim home; soon to be adopted by his foster parents.

What's disturbing about this case is that the foster parents are requesting
to change baby's religion ASAP as they want to pray for the baby in a
church. The good news is that the baby's CAS worker is a muslim and she is
working deligently to stop this madness and help baby Mohamed. She has
already informed the foster parents that they can not change child's
religion, at least at this point unless they adoption papers come
through...this usually takes time. Brothers and sisters we all are
obligated to help baby Mohamed...so roll up your sleaves and start calling
around to find a muslim home before baby Mohamed is adopted off.

I do not have all the details for this case but I am pleading to all of you
to assist locating a muslim family for baby Mohamed. I'm told that the baby
is about a year old and is very adorable. As you are aware, a child with
disability receives all sort of incentives from the federal govt. In
addition, CAS foster parents do get paid handsomely for caring for children
with disabilities.

Please call your friends, family, relatives, whoever who is willing to
become a foster parent. The process of becoming a foster parent isn't that
complicated. Remember fostering isn't the same as adoption. All you need is
to have a home and some time to care for the child. Remember, this is a
toddler...lets open our hearts and our homes for another baby instead of
focusing on OUR own...(sorry if I've offended anyone :). Baby Mohamed's
current foster parents have stated that unless this child is made a
Christian so that they can pray for him, they can no longer continue caring
for him. CAS is willing to allow whoever who qualifies to foster baby
Mohamed. SO lets work on this one insha-allah and help make a difference in
our community and most importantly for baby Mohamed.

If you have any leads, please call me directly so that I can ensure the
name reaches the right person. I can be reached at 258-2012 after 6 pm or
at work 252-1171 Ext. 2803 or via my cell 564-6901 or e-mail.

Jazak Allah for all your efforts and please make dua for baby Mohammed and
his family.

[IslamCity] Laura Bush Urges Rights for Mideast Women - Shame on You Muslims

2005-05-24 Thread Alan Border

First Lady Urges Rights for Mideast Women

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer (Comments in RED are Mine)
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=storyu=/ap/20050521/ap_on_go_pr_wh/laura_bush
SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan - Laura Bush on Saturday encouraged Middle Eastern leaders to expand women's participation in their societies as she herself took on a new role as an international goodwill ambassador.
After shying from the spotlight in her husband's first term, Mrs. Bush became the face of women taking on larger public roles with a speech to the World Economic Forum conference on the Middle East. Freedom, especially freedom for women, " is more than the absence of oppression," she said. "It's the right to speak and vote and worship freely. Human rights require the rights of women."

She said there has been "extraordinary progress" for women in the Middle East, especially since the oppressive Taliban was removed from power in Afghanistan. She said was delighted that Kuwait extended the right to vote to women last week, drawing the singular outburst of applause to interrupt her speech. Women can now vote in all Middle Eastern nations where elections are held except Saudi Arabia. The Persian Gulf nations of Bahrain, Qatar
and Oman all have held their first elections in recent years and have allowed women to cast ballots.

Mrs. Bush is one of the most admired women in the United States, with approval ratings leaps and bounds above her husband's this year. She's using her popularity to extend a friendly face to the Middle East, two months after she made a brief surprise visit to Afghanistan. With anti-American demonstrators taking to the streets to protest allegations that U.S. interrogators have mistreated Muslim captives, Mrs. Bush stressed her country's religious inclusion. "In the United States, we respect the traditions of all faiths," she said.

She also said she plans to visit holy sites from all three major religions born in the surrounding lands. After her speech she visited Mount Nebo, the site where Moses surveyed the Promised Land and where he later died, according to the Bible.

Mrs. Bush spoke at the Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center, a sparkling new structure overlooking the Dead Sea. It was the most high-profile event of a three-nation tour that will include visits to programs that are advancing childhood education and women's roles. Her appearance came on the second day of a three-day international conference sponsored by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum. It brought together about 1,300 international business and political leaders as well as a few celebrities, such as actor Richard Gere. The forum is best known for its glitzy annual meeting in the Swiss ski resort of Davos.

In some ways, Mrs. Bush was speaking to the choir. She echoed the sentiments of many speakers at the conference and her appearance was not an overwhelming draw, with the auditorium only a little more than half full. Mrs. Bush said the Middle East is making strides in improving democracy. She cited recent elections in Iraq and the Palestinian territories, democratic demonstrations in Lebanon and elections in nearby Afghanistan. "Now we are seeing a springtime of hope across the Middle East," she said.

She said she understands that fully inclusive democracy can be slow to develop. "In my country, women didn't secure the right to vote until more than a century after its founding," she said, batting away a pesky fly that repeatedly landed on her face throughout her speech. Mrs. Bush said that, besides including women, societies also must expand education for freedom to thrive. President Bush and I want a future of peace and opportunity for our own daughters and for all the world's children," she said.

In a more private setting, Mrs. Bush also used the conference to push for improvements for children back home. She touted her effort to support at-risk youth in a private meeting with members of Congress also attending the forum, including Republican Sens. John Sununu of New Hampshire, Orrin Hatch of Utah and Gordon Smith of Oregon, and Reps. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., and Jane Harman, D-Calif.

Comments – Mine
It is a shame on the Muslim world in general the current day Scholars of Islam in particular that a Non Muslim should come teach the Muslims about democracy, women’s rights so forth. It seems that the current day leaders of the Muslim countries are more comfortable in listening to the Non Muslims on how to run the affairs of the Muslims than listening to the Scholars of Islam.

Why should this state of affairs prevail. Is it because the leaders of the Muslim countries have come to the conclusion that to survive in this rat race they will have to follow the dictates of the west or perish. Therefore they have relegated the scholars to pass fatwas / rulings on matters which are trivial in comparison to the major issues like the system of government, type of economy, defence issues etc. that any country

[IslamCity] Anything for Allah

2005-05-24 Thread adil naveed

Anything for Allah
Khabaab (Radiallaho Anho) is one of those fortunate persons who offered themselves for sacrifice and suffering for the cause of Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala). He was the sixth or seventh person to embrace Islam and therefore, he suffered long. He was made to put on steel armor and lie in the sun to sweat. Very often he was made to lie flat on burning sand, which caused the flesh on his back to dissolve. He was the slave of a woman. When she came to know that he was visiting Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam), she used to brand his head with a hot iron rod. Umar (Radiallaho Anho) during his Caliph once asked him about the details of his suffering after embracing Islam. He showed him his back, seeing which Umar (Radiallaho Anho) said, "I have never seen such a back before." He said, "My body was dragged over heaps of burning coal and the blood and fat coming out of my back put out the fire." When Islam spread and the Muslims
conquered all the surrounding territory, he used to weep and say, "Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) seems to be compensating us in this world for all our sufferings and perhaps nothing would be left for us as reward in the Akhirah". Source: From the Book "Stories of the Sahabah" by Shaikh Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhalvi.Such were the followers of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who were ready to give anything but their faith in Allah. On the other hand, we Muslims today are ready to sell our iman for little material gains!

[IslamCity] Fwd: What time is it?

2005-05-24 Thread Yusuf Toropov

What time is it?

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),
the Last Messenger sent to humanity, said that Allah has never sent a
messenger who did not warn his people about al-Masih ad-Dajjal (the
AntiChrist).
And it only follows that Allah would give the Last Messenger
the most information relating to this subject, as his followers will be
the ones experiencing these signs. What follows is a small sample of the minor signs which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) enumerated for us.

Women will be naked in spite of being dressed, these women will be led astray will lead others astray (Muslim)

A man will leave his home and his thigh or hip will tell him what is happening back at his home (Ahmad)

The nations of the earth will gather against the Muslims like
hungry people going to sit down to a table full of food. This will
occur when the Muslims are large in number, but like the foam of the
sea. (Related by Abu Dawud.)

The people of Iraq will recieve no food and no money due to oppression by the Romans (Europeans) (Muslim)

Episodes of sudden death will become widespread (Ahmad)

The disappearance of knowledge and the appearance of ignorance (Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Majah, Ahmad)

be upon him, said that this has never happened without new diseases
befalling the people, which their ancestors had not known.) (Bukhari,
Muslim, Ibn Majah, Al-Haythami)

When fornication becomes widespread among your leaders (The
Prophet, peace be upon him, said that this will happen when the people
stop forbidding evil) (Ibn Majah)

The consumption of intoxicants will be widespread (Bukhari Muslim)

Killing, killing, killing (Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Majah, Ahmad)

The children will be filled with rage (at-Tabarani, al-Hakim)

Children will be foul (at-Tabarani, al-Hakim)

Rain will be acidic or burning (at-Tabarani, al-Hakim)

Children of fornication will become widespread or prevalent (at-Tabarani, al-Hakim)

Gains will be shared out only among the rich, with no benefit to the poor (at-Tirmidhi)

Paying zakat becomes a burden and miserliness becomes widespread; charity is given reluctantly (at-Tirmidhi Al-Haythami)

Miserliness will be thrown into the hearts of people (Bukhari)

There will be people who will be brethren in public but
enemies in secret (He was asked how that would come about and replied,
Because they will have ulterior motives in their mutual dealings and
at the same time will fear one another.) (at-Tirmidhi)

When a man obeys his wife and disobeys his mother; and treats his friend kindly while shunning his father (at-Tirmidhi)

When voices are raised in the mosques (at-Tirmidhi)

People will hop between the clouds and the earth

A tribulation will enter everyone's home (Ahmad)

The leader of a people will be the worst of them (at-Tirmidhi)

Re: [IslamCity] Resolutions of OIC(www.oic-oci.org)

2005-05-24 Thread tsidd96472

Mohtram Hannan Bhai, Assalamu Alaikum

Beforethe colonial powers left the Muslim world, they systematically
planted in power those people who were their "yes-men". Where they couldn't do,
their nurtured and trained civil and military personals usurped power through
coups and conspiracies. Now they are sitting at the helm of affairs of their
respective countries. They are harping on his masters voice and have no courage
to displease their old masters. They are surviving only on the support of their
colonial masters.

Later on the USA replaced these colonial powers and now Americais
supporting these despotic regimes who cannot dare togo against the wishes
of their masterscontrolling Muslim's world affairs from London,
Washington,Parisor Moscow. So what you expect from them? The
governments in Muslim countries are the stooges and the OIC is the outward
platform where the representatives of these "usurpers" are dancing on the tunes
of "his masters voice. Just let us recite: "Inna lillaheywa Inna ilahey
rajeoon" and feel "contented" in disgrace and perhaps a "prolong" humiliation at
every turning point of our history as "beggars" have no choice.

Unless these regimes are overthrown from the tentacles of power through
proven democratic processand Islam becomes the guiding phenomenon of our
affairs, please don'texpect any change in OIC and its output. If the
situation does not change, I apprehend, another 36 years willpass and
the Ummah will remain struck up where it is today. Let Muslims realize their
position on earth as "Ummatun Wasataun", act and behave like that, only then OIC
will command respect and the world will listen to what it would resolve.

[IslamCity] Thought of the week

2005-05-24 Thread Karim A G

Thought of the week

Imam Ali (AS)
has said, How often it becomes apparent that the rich person is actually
poorer than the poorest person!

These words of wisdom from the Commander of the Faithful have been interpreted
in many ways. However, the most important meaning which can be drawn from
this saying is one which relates to the material world. Often, those of us who
are living from hand to mouth or are within the 'middle class' wish
that we had unlimited wealth and thus, economic freedom. Little do we know that
with more money comes extensive responsibility and greater challenges. We think
that money can buy friends and that when we are financially well-off, all our
difficulties will end; however this is merely an illusion.

How often have we seen that those with vast amounts of wealth are restricted in
their movements - lest they are kidnapped or charged for a crime they did not
commit only to have their wealth squandered in expensive legal battles. In
addition, when wealth increases, ones friends may also increase -
many of whom may be looking for handouts and a free ride. Thus, the rich person
is forced to continually censor his interaction with others. It is for this
reason that the Imam tells us that often a rich person is actually a poor
person (from the perspective of decreased freedom and increased hassle)!

[IslamCity] A 14 million dollar mosque!

2005-05-24 Thread Shaikh Hyder

. Can you believe this? A $14 million mosque has been built in Dearborn, Michigan [outside Detroit]. At a time when the Muslim world is being torn asunder by war, poverty and exploitation, isn't this obscene? When Muslims rotting in U.S. prisons do not have money for good attorneys, when Muslim human rights activists don't have funds for travel expenses, $14 MILLION have been spent on ONE BUILDING!
5. Who is behind this $14 million monster? It was inaugurated at the end of April by Syed Hassan Qazwini. This man claims to be descendent of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)! and wears a black turban and a cleric's dress. From all accounts, he is ONE OF THE BIGGEST SUPPORTERS OF THE WAR IN IRAQ launched by his good friend Bush. He calls it the "liberation" of Iraq. If Imam Ali, ra., had been alive today, he would have had this character whipped for manufacturing a $14 million dollar mosque in a time of war. Qazwini's marine buddies have been destroying mosques in Fallujah, rampaging in Najafand desecrating the Qur'an in Guantanamo Bay. His British friends allowed the burning of Imam Ali's, r.a., Qur'an in Basra, and he still loves his British "liberators."
[Readers are encouraged to send us at the above addressmore information on Qazwini. We have learned that he has tried to incite sectarian strife among Muslims by publishing an attack on Imam Bukhari's Sahih. Please send it to us if you have a copy of Qazwini's attack.]

[IslamCity] Blair Faces US Probe Over Secret Iraq Invasion Plan

2005-05-24 Thread MA PA

Blair faces US probe over secret Iraq invasion planTony Allen-Mills and Tom Pattinson

May 22, 2005

SENIOR American congressmen are considering sending a delegation to London to investigate Britain’s role in preparations for the war in Iraq.
Democratic opponents of President George W Bush have seized on a leaked Downing Street memo, first published three weeks ago by The Sunday Times, as evidence that American lawmakers were misled about Bush’s intentions in Iraq.
A group of 89 Democrats from the House of Representatives has written to Bush to ask whether the memo is accurate.
It recounts a discussion between Tony Blair and his military and intelligence advisers about the Bush administration’s views in July 2002, three months before Congress authorised the White House to go to war with Iraq.
The Democrat letter, drafted by Congressman John Conyers of Michigan, said that the memo raised “troubling new questions regarding the legal justifications for the war as well as the integrity of your own administration”.
US administration officials tried to shrug off the letter last week. Scott McClellan, Bush’s spokesman, said the White House saw “no need” to respond to an affair that one newspaper dubbed “memogate”. Yet Democratic opponents of the war appear determined not to let the matter drop. “They (the Republicans) are trying desperately to wait it out and hope that nobody will bring this up,” Conyers said. “But this thing will not be snuffed out. ”

[IslamCity] Some Informations, it may lead you to the eternal wisdom

2005-05-24 Thread Abu Nabhan

"I began to see Islam with its own eyes, as the unadulterated, pristine belief in the one and only, the true God, Who does not beget, and was not begotten, Whom nothing and nobody resembles … In place of the qualified deism of a tribal God and the constructions of a divine Trinity, the Qur’an showed me the most lucid, most straightforward, the most abstract - thus historically most advanced – and least anthropomorphic concept of God. The Qur’an’s ontological statements, as well as its ethical teachings, impressed me as profoundly plausible, “as good as gold,” so there was no room for even the slightest doubt about the authenticity of Muhammad’s prophetic mission. People who understand human
nature cannot fail to appreciate the infinite wisdom of the “Dos and Don’ts” handed down from God to man in the form of the Qur’an." Dr. Murad Hofmann-Beltsville, Germany
Christian Minister's Conversion to Islam[http://www.welcome-back.org/profile/dirks1.shtml]"There is some irony in the fact that the supposedly best,
brightest, and most idealistic of ministers-to-be are selected for the very best of seminary education, e.g. that offered at that time at the Harvard Divinity School. The irony is that, given such an education, the seminarian is exposed to ... much ... historical truth. .. As such, it is no real wonder that almost a majority of such seminary graduates leave seminary, not to “fill pulpits”, where they would be asked to preach that which they know is not true, but to enter the various counseling professions. Such was also the case for me, as I went on to earn a master’s and doctorate in clinical psychology." Dr. Dirks is a former minister (deacon) of the United Methodist Church. I am so very glad that I am a Muslim. Islam is my life. Islam is the beat of my heart. Islam is the blood that courses through my veins. Islam is my strength. Islam is my life so wonderful and beautiful. Without Islam I am nothing, and should Allah ever turn His magnificent face from me, I could not survive." "For those whom Islam has embraced, the greatest witness to God’s unremitting, pursuing, sustaining, and guiding love is the Qur’an. Like a vast magnificent ocean, it lures you deeper and deeper into its dazzling waves until you are swept into it. But instead of drowning in a sea of darkness, as described above, you find yourself immersed in an ocean of divine light and mercy. … as I read the Qur’an and prayed the Islamic prayers, a door to my heart was unsealed and I was immersed in an overwhelming tenderness. Love became more permanent and real than the earth beneath my feet; its power restored me and made it so that even I could feel love … I was happy enough to have found faith in a
sensible religion. But I never expected to be touched by such intoxicating mercy." Dr. Jeffrey Lang

Moderation Best Way to Fight Extremism:
  Scholars

“We don’t preach moderation to be
described by others as moderate,” said Bashir.

  By Massoud Sabri, IOL Staff
  KUWAIT CITY, May 22, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) – Muslim scholars
participating in a three-day conference, currently in session in Kuwait,
said the concept of moderation is deeply rooted in Islam and by no means a
  novelty.
Gathering for deliberations on Islam’s stance on extremism
and the role of civil and official societies in enhancing moderation, the
scholars agreed that moderation was the sharpest weapon against
  fanaticism.
“We don’t preach moderation to be described by others as
moderate. Moderation has everything to do with Islam and a commitment to
the Word of God,” Sudanese Minister of Waqfs Essam Al-Bashir told the
conference, organized by the Kuwaiti Waqfs Ministry and the International
  Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO).
Stressing that moderation is the best way to fight extremism
and hyperbolic rhetoric, Bashir blamed extremism on the West’s superior
approach in dealing with Muslims to impose its agenda and dictate its
  polities.
He called on Western countries to be fair and just when it
comes to humanitarian issues, and to recognize the time-honored
civilization and sublime values of Muslim countries.
  Spreading Tolerance

Women represented one-third of the
attendance.
Kuwaiti Waqfs Minister Abdallah Al-Matuq said moderation
helps spread the culture of tolerance and encourage dialogue in the Muslim
  world.
“Muslims should take the initiative in presenting the
shinning image of Islam through promoting its tolerant values,” he told
  the gathering.
His deputy Adel Al-Fallah called for a clear definition of
the much-distorted moderation, which leaves the impression that moderation
had no room in the Muslim faith.
“The Ministry of Waqfs will pay due attention over the coming
five years to spreading the true meaning of moderation in cooperation with
  the IICO,” Fallah said.
He said the ministry is keen on instilling moderation values
in younger generations through education programs in schools and
  mosques.
“In this respect, the Kuwaiti Waqfs Ministry has established
a center to reach out to Islamic centers in Europe and the United States,”
  Fallah added.
Sheikh Yusuf Jasim Hajar, of the IICO, said the conference is
building on the promising “Moderate Nation” project, which is sponsored by
the charity and the Kuwaiti Waqfs Ministry in their earnest efforts to
  eschew terrorism and extremism.
In his keynote speech, Hajar distanced Islam from the killing
of innocent people committed in its name.
The conference’s opening session, held on Saturday 21, show a
  massive women turn out.
Representing one-third of the participants, women were also
keen on having their say at the plenary session with a paper on the social
  and psychological effects of bigotry.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness), and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: I am one of the Muslims.} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels. [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said, Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all.
