(02/10/2006) The Respect Of A Cousin Edward MillerAfter the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Postens 12 caricatures of the prophet Muhammad were republished in European newspapers, riots erupted in Damascus, Gaza, Beirut and elsewhere throughout the Muslim world. The violence is an extreme manifestation of the deep hurt felt by virtually all Muslims.As we condemn the violence on the streets, perhaps we should take a moment to understand the hurt in the hearts of the
great majority of Muslims who did not engage in violence.For Muslims, the mere rendering of an image of Muhammad is sacrilege. The portrayal of Muhammad in a pejorative fashion is to them an inconceivably offensive desecration, on the level of what would be for us the defilement of a Torah scroll. Because it was done in newspapers across Europe, it was a slap in the face repeated thousands of times.Perhaps its a question of respect, not freedom. Freedom of _expression_ theoretically protects the right of a non-Jew to desecrate a Torah scroll. Yet we would all view freedom of _expression_ as a hollow defense to such a vile act.Some say Muslims cant take criticism and simply dont understand freedom of the press. In my own limited experience, that has not been the case. For the past year Ive written a column in a Muslim newspaper, Muslims Weekly, in which Ive criticized suicide bombing, the treatment of Jews under Islamic rule, the anti-Jewish rantings of
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and even Muslims Weeklys own reporting about Israel. But it was all done with respect, an informed appreciation of the wonderful benefits that Islam conferred upon the Jewish people, along with a willingness to look at our own imperfections together with those of the other.Regardless of whether or not the European press was constitutionally free to publish the offensive images, the act was a blatant and vulgar act of disrespect to Islam. Such insults no doubt contribute to the frightening specter of a clash of civilizations.What can we do as Jews to lessen the hostilities? Perhaps, just perhaps, a little respect would help. Rather than ripping the wounds wider with editorial musings extolling freedom of speech and condemning violent protests, is it not time for a bit of healing?The pages of this Jewish newspaper present a place for a small start by showing Muslims right here that though we too have the freedom to say
anything we like, we choose to convey respect to our Muslim cousins. Printing something positive about Muhammad best does this.There is a space between romanticizing the past and vilifying it. There is a time to focus on the dark side of history and a time to view the other in the best light. There is a time to cull from our rabbinic writings the good our sages saw in Islam and there is quite a bit of such sentiment recorded. We Jews need to learn to be more flexible, pursuing the claims of Jews expelled from Arab countries and criticizing anti-Jewish TV programs and cartoons in the Muslim media, while at the same time displaying gratitude for all the good Islam did for us. There is a time to jump over our pain and see the humanity of the other. That time is now. Let us start:There is a Hadith (oral tradition concerning the words and works of Muhammad) recorded by Bukhari in the name of Amer Bin Rabiha that reads as follows:A funeral procession passed us and
the Prophet stood up for it. We said, but Prophet of God, this is a funeral of a Jew. The Prophet responded, rise. One can search the writings of the ancient non-Jewish world for a more powerful example of a public display of respect for the humanity of the Jew. There simply is no more powerful statement than the single word uttered by Muhammad nearly 14 centuries ago.Some readers will bombard this newspaper with reams of material showing a darker side to Islam, as if it were just too much for them to hear one good thing. But it is there, it is a sacred part of their tradition, it is good and we should hear it and respect it.When you give respect you get it. When you take criticism, you earn the right to give it. Perhaps this article will be republished in Muslim newspapers, compete with its critical comments about the pain we feel in the face of anti-Jewish cartoons and worse in Muslim media. Jew, in a Jewish newspaper, was one of respect, telling its audience: We know that the one mocked in newspapers in Europe is the one who had the humanity to tell his companions to rise for the funeral procession of a Jew. We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). (Quran 49:13)It is He Who brings out the living from the dead, and brings out the dead from the living, and Who gives life to the earth after it is dead: and thus shall ye be brought out (from the dead). Among His Signs in this, that He created you from dust; and then,- behold, ye are men scattered (far and wide)! And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect. And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors: verily in that are Signs for those who know. (Quran 30:19-22)Say: "O men! I am sent unto you all, as the Messenger of Allah, to Whom belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth: there is no god but He: it is He That giveth both life and death. The more we claim exclusiveness that Islam is for us, Muslims alone, then we will become a cult.O men! Certainly the promise of Allah is true. Eat of what is on earth, Lawful and good; and do not follow the footsteps of the evil one, for he is to you an avowed enemy (Quran 2: 168) 1. The Scenario of Creation: Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not."And He taught Adam the nature of all things; then He placed them before the angels, and said: "Tell me the nature of these if ye are right." (Quran 2: 30-31) Vicegerent i.e. Khilafah is an important issue because Vicegerent itself has certain value, mission of caliber. When Angels asked Allah about the vicegerent, He said they do not know about the majestic plan. The Arabic word 'Asma' in this verse means 'nature of all things'. Every human being is created with a basic knowledge with which he/she can develop. This innate knowledge put humanity above angels.And behold, We said to the angels: "Bow down to Adam" and they bowed down. Not so Iblis: he refused and was haughty: He was of those who reject Faith.We said: "O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden; and eat of the bountiful things therein as (where and when) ye will; but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression." Some Turkish cabinet ministers expressed shock and dismay on Saturday at the court's ruling. Decision condemned Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the

Invitation of non Muslims to the true Guidance of God is an obligatory duty for all Muslims. Without this invitation, people fall into ignorance and misguidance. Allah states in the Quran: Quran 16:125 Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and reason with them in ways that are best and most gracious: surely your Lord best knows those who go astray from His path, and He knows best those who follow the right way." Quran 41:33-35 "Who is better in speech than one who calls (people) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in Islam"? The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were your friend and intimate! And no one will be granted such goodness except those who
exercise patience and self-restraint,- none but persons of the greatest good fortune." The Muslim who practices this invitation must always remember that he is not entrusted with converting people to Islam, for ultimate guidance is from Allah, and free will is the bases of the Divine worldly test. Allah states: Quran 24:54 "The Messenger's duty is only to convey (the message) in a clear way." Based upon the above verse, even the prophet of Islam is not in charge of converting people. So, if someone asks me about Islam, I would say: Islam is simple. We believe in One God, the same God of all the prophets in the Bible, Prophets Jesus and Muhammad. Our Holy book is the Quran, which is truly the authentic Words of God. It is in Arabic. It is the same Arabic text for 14 centuries. Moreover, millions of Muslims memorize the whole Quran by heart from generation to generation. We are like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson
and 3 other US presidents, Lev Tolstoy, Sir Isaac Newton, and millions of Christians who do not believe in the trinity. But we believe that Jesus is one of the greatest of the five Prophets, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, Peace be upon them. And that is it. Straight talk, no lies, no deception, and no hard sell.On the other hand, Christian mission development is not like any other religion. It is another big business. Let's
learn different view points and enhance our ability to make judgments that
should stand the test of time and different arguments
We
have set the ground rules and the consequences for irresponsible behavior from
the simple things like setting an age limit for consuming alcohol, an age limit
for Voting, an age limit for getting married to, flag burning, using "N"
word, denying Holocaust, discrimination on Job, like what movies your kids can
see, driving 20 MPH in a school zone and many more restrictions, as
a society we have to ensure freedom
to the society at large over the individual's freedom, that is the essence of
true freedom, the one that protects the society at large. There
is freedom and there is abuse. As a society it is our responsibility to tune the
limits.
When
the Danish newspaper published the cartoons in September, they knew it offended
the Muslims. For 4 Months Muslims wanted to see the Danish Prime Minister who
refused to meet with them, they wrote letters to the newspaper, which went
un-attended. On the top of it, all other news papers ganged up and published the
cartoons, simply provoking the Muslims, the intention was evil. By the way
the News paper had declined to publish offensive pictures of Jesus Christ saying
it would offend its readers. The provocation is deliberate. There are over 30

The
violence caused by Muslims is dead wrong. They have failed the very person of
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) whom they are supposedly protecting. I urge Muslims to
follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to show to the Danish keepers of
freedom, what Prophet Muhammad was all about. In one of his journeys, as other
spiritual leaders have suffered, he was pelted with stones and he was bleeding
endlessly as Jesus was bleeding prior to crucification. The story goes that
Angel Gabriel and his associates were angry as their prophet was being hurt...
and they were eager to go and get them boys... But Prophet Muhammad said no to
them, and instead asked God to forgive them and asked his associates to pray for
the welfare of the miscreants and mercy on their ignorance. What those few
Muslims have done is an embarrassment to all of us.
It
is also wrong for us to label that all
Muslims are doing the violent attacks it, when the protestors do not even
make 1/10th of 1% of the population. (1% of 1.3 Billion == 13 Million –
total of protestors were 900,000 bulk of them were peaceful protestors and only
about 300 were involved in violence). Living in a democracy and understanding
the principles of representation, It is greater wrong for us to call that
representation, and we should seriously consider our own ignorance and
ill-willin the matter.
This
incident will do some good for the mankind, as you cannot use the N
word, as you cannot
deny
holocaust, which will end you in jail. We need to extend the freedom of speech
to restrict on portraying pictures of any one that people consider Holy. It will
ban MF Hussain from painting Goddess Saraswati and Sita Devi in less than modest
pictures, it will ban idiots from publishing
offensive pictures of Jesus Christ, Prophet Muhammad or any one sacred to its
followers.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Video images of British soldiers allegedly beating Iraqi youths with batons and fists aired throughout the Middle East and Britain on Sunday, outraging locals and prompting British Prime Minister Tony Blair to vow a full investigation. The tape was obtained by the News of the World tabloid newspaper from a whistleblower it did not identify. The footage purportedly shows a street confrontation in which Iraqi youths throw objects at British soldiers and then flee down the street. The cameraman provides narration and urges the soldiers on. The soldiers apparently chase the Iraqis, catch at least three and drag them through a gate into a
fenced in areas, according to the footage. The civilians are then pulled to the ground and beaten by at least five alleged British soldiers with batons and fists. One of the civilians has his shirt ripped off. The footage then shows what appears to be another group of soldiers dragging in another civilian and beating him with batons. The newspaper claims the video was filmed in southern Iraq by a corporal two years ago. The British government said military police were investigating the allegations. "We take seriously any allegations of mistreatment and those will be investigated very fully indeed," Blair said in South

Turkey's government has said it will fight a court ruling suspending a key
educational reform, a move likely to stoke tensions with the country's secular
establishment.
On Wednesday, Turkey's top administrative court ordered the suspension of a
decree that allows students from religious vocational schools to move to
mainstream high schools to take final exams, thus boosting their chances of
entering university.
Secularists in Turkey's educational and judicial establishment fear such moves
could increase the influence of Islam and erode the strict division between
religion and state.
They distrust the ruling AK Party due to its Islamist roots.
Education Minister Huseyin Celik said: We're going to oppose the [court]
decision. We will exhaust the legal process.
If you ask me how I evaluate the decision, I cannot say I am happy about it. I
would like to express my regret ... and to say that in legal terms I am
surprised.
Academic obstacles
The court gave no reason for its decision to suspend the reform.
Erdogan has tried in the past to
relax the restrictions
But the secularist body in charge of Turkish higher education, which had sought
the ruling, said the reform would strengthen religious schools at the expense
of others.
Graduates of vocational schools, including the religious ones, are not banned
from attending university, but they face obstacles in garnering the points
required to win a place to study subjects other than their speciality.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister is a graduate from a religious
vocational school and has tried in the past to relax the restrictions, but met
similar secularist opposition.
The secularists have also thwarted his efforts to relax a ban on women wearing
the headscarf at university.
Erdogan's centre-right Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has a big
majority in parliament, denies critics' claims that it has an Islamist agenda.
The vast majority of Turkey's 72 million people are Muslims.

THE PRESERVATION OF PHARAOH'S BODY As we shall see later on, Pharaoh regarded himself as a deity and responded with slanders and threats to Prophet Musa's (as) calls for him to believe in Allah. This arrogant attitude lasted until he was faced with the threat of death through drowning. The Qur'an relates that Pharaoh immediately turned to belief when faced with Allah's punishment:We brought the tribe of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his troops pursued them out
of tyranny and enmity. Then, when he was on the point of drowning, he [Pharaoh] said: "I believe that there is no god but Him in Whom the tribe of Israel believes. I am one of the Muslims." (Qur'an, 10:90) However, this last-minute conversion was not accepted, for it was not sincere. According to the Qur'an, Allah exclaimed:"What, now! When previously you rebelled and were one of the corrupters? Today we will preserve your body so you can be a Sign for people who come after you. Surely many people are heedless of Our Signs." (Qur'an, 10:91-92) The information that Pharaoh's corpse would serve as a sign for later generations may be regarded as an indication that his body would not decay. On display in the Royal Mummies Chamber of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is a mummified body believed to be that of this tyrant. In all likelihood, Pharaoh's body floated to shore after
being drowned, was found and mummified by the Egyptians, and then carried to a previously prepared burial chamber.182
