Re: Bismillah [IslamCity] help with a name

2007-12-23 Thread S A Hannan
Dear Linda and members,

Assalamu Alaikum.

Muhammad is a name for a male not female. It should not be pre-fixed by Abdul as
that will mean slave of Muhammad which is not appropriate.
Some of the good names for a Muslim girl are Fatima, Ayesha,Khadija, Jainab.

Jews and Muslims Set Up Big Interfaith Effort

By Michelle Boorstein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 16, 2007; Page A09

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/15/AR2007121501363.html

Two major Jewish and Muslim organizations unveiled an interfaith dialogue
curriculum yesterday and are urging their hundreds of thousands of members to
use it. Both sides say it is the broadest Jewish-Muslim interfaith effort in
the continent's history.

Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, North
America's largest Jewish movement, announced the partnership with the Islamic
Society of North America at his group's biennial convention in San Diego.

As a once-persecuted minority in countries where anti-Semitism is still a
force, we understand the plight of Muslims in North America today, Yoffie said
yesterday. We live in a world in which religion is manipulated to justify the
most horrific acts, a world in which -- make no mistake -- Islamic extremists
constitute a profound threat. For some, this is a reason to flee from dialogue,
but in fact the opposite is true. When we are killing each other in the name of
God, sensible religious people have an obligation to do something about it.

This summer Yoffie became the first major Jewish leader to address ISNA, the
continent's largest Muslim organization with 30,000 attendants coming to its
annual convention. ISNA President Ingrid Mattson will address the
980-congregation Jewish group today, the first leader of a major Muslim group
to do so.

The manual and video are built around five sessions that touch on topics
including the place of Jerusalem in Jewish and Muslim tradition and history.
The toughest potential sticking points will probably be related to Israel and
to stereotypes both groups carry about the other, Mark Pelavin, director of
interreligious affairs for the Jewish group, said in an interview. Jews want
to know how Muslims feel about terrorism in the name of Islam, and Muslims want
to know how Jews feel about Palestinian suffering.

Eleven synagogue-mosque pairs have already been set up as pilot programs,
including two in the D.C. area: the Islamic Society of Southern Prince George's
County of Temple Hills and Temple Solel in Bowie is one, and the All Dulles
Area Muslim Society in Sterling and the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation
in Reston is the other.

Yoffie also announced that the two groups created an adult curriculum on Islam
and pressed every synagogue to consider offering it.

There exists in our community a profound ignorance about Islam, along with a
real desire to learn about what moves and motivates Muslims today. We must
respond to this desire with serious programs of education, he said.

Both groups already have dialogue programs with various other faith groups, but
on a much smaller scale.
---
Every honest Jew who knows the history of his people cannot but feel a deep
sense of gratitude to Islam, which has protected the Jews for fifty
generations, while the Christian world persecuted the Jews and tried many times
'by the sword' to get them to abandon their faith. -- Uri Avnery, a Jewish
Journalist

An advocacy group is hiring students as on-campus promoters of
Israel. StandWithUs is offering up to $1,000 a year this semester to
38 Emerson fellows, Jewish student leaders at key colleges and
universities targeted by the organization. Their duties will include
bringing in speakers and films that show Israel in a positive light.

Officials from StandWithUs told reporters that they gave particular
consideration to applicants from problem campuses such as Columbia,
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of
Michigan, which the organization identifies as hotbeds of anti-Israel
sentiment. More than 100 students applied for the fellowships, funded
by California-based philanthropists Rita and Steven Emerson.

StandWithUs is an international pro-Israel education organization
founded in 2001.

Canadian Muslim Kills His Daughter Two Times

  JAWED ANWAR

MUHAMMAD Parvez, a Canadian Pakistani, resident of
Mississauga, Greater Toronto Area, has killed his
daughter two times: once when he admitted his daughter
into a public school, and secondly when he killed her
after seeing the natural outcome, which was the
different lifestyle for which he prepared his
daughter.. Influenced by the atmosphere of the public
school, Aqsa Parvez, age 16, endorsed and accepted the
new life style and left her home. When she went home
to get her belongings and leave her home forever, her
father failed to control his anger. To the shock and
anguish of the whole community, the father murdered
his daughter.. No one, including the father, realizes
the first murder, but now the whole world knows the
sad news of the second killing of the same daughter.

The horrible news has provided fresh ammunition to the
Islamophobic zealots who don't miss a single chance to
prove that Islam equals terrorism and is the most
terrorist and worst religion on the earth. The
father's actions provided a focal point for North
American talk show hosts who pleaded aggressively to
ban the hijab. The talk show hosts never tire of
saying that we are living in multiculturalism and that
we are proud of it, but when it comes to Islam, there
is no room in the multicultural society. We have a
cultural mosaic, they argue, but girls wearing
hijabs have no place in the mosaic. They insist that
Muslims must abandon their modest and pious dress for
the sake of our cultural mosaic.

The murderous father also provided an issue to the
vultures of Muslim Society who are waiting for these
kinds of issues to cash in on an opportunity to serve
their master. Their main aim is to demonize Islam, its
life style, and all the symbols of faith so that they
can get promotions, fellowship, and lucrative job in
think tanks and anti-Islam research centers.

Historically, it is not the first time. In pre-Islam,
[before the advent of the prophethood of Muhammad
(s.a.w.)], Makkah was a plural society proud of its
multiculturalism. The people accommodated all kinds of
worship, life styles, and practices. But they
violently opposed Prophet Muhammad's message and the
motto of Tawheed (One God, One Universe, One
Humanity). The companions of the Prophet (s.a.w.) were
tortured at extreme levels and were violently forced
out of the country. The society had tolerance for all
except Muslims, and the cultural mosaic welcomed all
  except followers of Islam.

In Pervez's case, Islamophobic fascists are trying to
present the issue as an issue of honor killing
instead of an issue of anger management or domestic
violence. The reason is that anger management or
domestic violence is a social issue, but, in the
media's warped perspective, honor killing is an
Islamic issue. The honor killing issue gives them a
chance to beat the obnoxious Islamophobic drum. The
person who knows only the basics of Islam knows that
the so-called honor killings are haram (extremely
prohibited in Islam). All those with any sense
understand that Aqsa's death was not an honor
killing but an anger killing instead.

In the first murder, Muhammad Pervez is not alone in
sacrificing his daughter's life to the public school
system. The majority of us are all culprits. The
reason is obvious: either there is no alternative, or
the alternatives may not be practical for all.
Education is mandatory. Two alternatives to the
public school system are Islamic schools and home
schooling. Due to a lack of resources within the
community, Islamic schools are few and very expensive
and not affordable to all. Most state governments
accommodate home schooling, but there are requirements
that parents may not be able to meet. The reality,
therefore, is that most people really do not have an
alternative to the public school system.

  Do we need an alternative?

Yes, and Muslims are not the exceptional community.
Nearly all Jews go to their private religious schools
from primary to college level. Practicing Catholics
send their children to strict, religious schools, and
most of the Canadian states provide government funding
to them. When the Toronto conservative candidate John
Tory was promising government funding to private
schools in the October Ontario Provincial election,
the Muslims, the new community of Canada might be of
the main or immediate beneficiary. Tory was opposed by
the mainstream media so vigorously on the issue that
his party lost the election, including his own seat.

Canadian Muslims, mostly ignorant political community,
did not even realize the advantage of private school
  funding, which

Declaration of World Against War Conference
This conference of delegates from peace, anti-war, anti-imperialist and
liberation movements across the world declares its opposition to the endless
war prosecuted by the US government against states, peoples and movements in
all parts of our planet.
We oppose the interference of the US and its allies in sovereign states, and
assert the right of all peoples to self-determination. We support all people
fighting for peace and against imperialism.
  In particular, we demand:

An immediate end to the illegal military occupation of Iraq, which has
caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people, a
withdrawal of all foreign troops and the full transfer of sovereignty to the
Iraqi people and their representatives.
A halt to all preparations for an attack against Iran, and a commitment to
solve any issues through exclusively diplomatic means.
A withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, allowing the Afghan people
to determine their own future
Justice for the Palestinian people, and an end to Israeli aggression
throughout the Middle East.
An end to plans for US missile defence, and that all states actively pursue
nuclear disarmament.
We affirm the solidarity of all those fighting for peace, social justice and
self-determination worldwide, and commit ourselves to strengthening our unity
and developing new forms of co-operation.

We therefore designate the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq as a worldwide
day of action in support of the demands NO ATTACK on IRAN and TROOPS OUT OF
IRAQ/AFGHANISTAN and call on all national anti-war movements to hold mass
protests and demonstrations on that day.

Bismillah [IslamCity] The Two Festivals (Eids)

2007-12-23 Thread muslimah muslimah
The Two Festivals (Eids)   Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 69
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar:
Umar bought a silk cloak from the market, took it to Allah's Apostle and
said, O Allah's Apostle! Take it and adorn yourself with it during the 'Id and
when the delegations visit you. Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) replied, This dress
is for those who have no share (in the Hereafter). After a long period Allah's
Apostle (p.b.u.h) sent to Umar a cloak of silk brocade. Umar came to Allah's
Apostle (p.b.u.h) with the cloak and said, O Allah's Apostle! You said that
this dress was for those who had no share (in the Hereafter); yet you have sent
me this cloak. Allah's Apostle said to him, Sell it and fulfill your needs by
it.
  The Two Festivals (Eids)   Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 71
Narrated Al-Bara':
I heard the Prophet (p.b.u.h) delivering a Khutba saying, The first thing to
be done on this day (first day of 'Id ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning
from the prayer we slaughter our sacrifices (in the name of Allah) and whoever
does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions).
  The Two Festivals (Eids)   Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 73
Narrated Anas bin Malik,:
Allah's Apostle never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of 'Id-ul-Fitr
unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd
number of dates.
  Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 75
The Prophet delivered the Khutba after offering the prayer on the Day of Nahr
and said, Whoever offers the prayer like us and slaughters like us then his
Nusuk (sacrifice) will be accepted by Allah. And whoever slaughters his
sacrifice before the 'Id prayer then he has not done the sacrifice. Abi Burda
bin Niyar, the uncle of Al-Bara' said, O Allah's Apostle! I have slaughtered
my sheep before the 'Id prayer and I thought today as a day of eating and
drinking (not alcoholic drinks), and I liked that my sheep should be the first
to be slaughtered in my house. So slaughtered my sheep and took my food before
coming for the prayer. The Prophet said, The sheep which you have slaughtered
is just mutton (not a Nusuk). He (Abu Burda) said, O Allah's Apostle! I have
a young she-goat which is dearer to me than two sheep. Will that be sufficient
as a Nusuk on my behalf? The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, Yes, it will be
sufficient for you but it will not be sufficient (as a Nusuk)
 for anyone else after you.
  Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 98   Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
The Prophet (p.b.u.h) used to Nahr or slaughter sacrifices at the Musalla (on
'Id-ul-Adha).
  Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 102   Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
On the Day of 'Id the Prophet used to return (after offering the 'Id prayer)
through a way different from that by which he went.
  Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 102   Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
On the Day of 'Id the Prophet used to return (after offering the 'Id prayer)
through a way different from that by which he went.
Malik :: Book 10 : Hadith 10.4.8 Yahya related to me from Malik from Damra
ibn Said al-Mazini from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Masud that Umar
ibn al-Khattab asked Abu Waqid al-Laythi what the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, used to recite in the prayers of Adha and Fitr.
He said, He used to recite Qaf (Sura 50) and al-lnshiqaq (Sura84).
Dawud :: Book 15 : Hadith 2783 Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: I have been commanded to celebrate
festival ('Id) on the day of sacrifice, which Allah, Most High, has appointed
for this community. A man said: If I do not find except a she-goat or a
she-camel borrowed for milk or other benefits, should I sacrifice it? He said:
No, but you should clip your hair , and nails, trim your moustaches, and shave
your pubes. This is all your sacrifice in the eyes of Allah, Most High.
  Sacrifice (Kitab Al-Dahaya)   Dawud :: Book 15 : Hadith 2789   Narrated Jabir
ibn Abdullah:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) sacrificed two horned rams which were white
with black markings and had been castrated. When he made them face the qiblah,
he said: I have turned my face towards Him. Who created the heavens and the
earth, following Abraham's religion, the true in faith, and I am not one of the
polytheists. My prayer, and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death are
all for Allah, the Lord of the Universe, Who has no partner. That is what I was
commanded to do, and I am one of the Muslims. O Allah it comes from Thee and is
given to Thee from Muhammad and his people. In the name of Allah, and Allah is
Most Great. He then made sacrifice.

Freedom of Expression and The Offending Cartoons

  Mohamed Elmasry

I thank Paul Schneidereit, president, of the Canadian Association
of Journalists for inviting me to participate in this panel. I have a soft spot
in my heart for Nova Scotia, as my wife is from Yarmouth.

First I must say that I have four personal reasons for advocating
freedom of expression:

a.. 1. I am a Muslim. Islam, more than any other religion,
makes it one's religious duty not only to support -- but also to protect -- the
rights of fellow human beings to freedom of expression, freedom of conscience,
and freedom of religion.
b.. 2. I am an academic. Academics are paid to speak, to use
their voices as teachers and researchers. Any compromise to their freedom of
expression, any silencing of their voices, adversely affects their own academic
freedom, and ultimately that of their peers. Academic freedom is the basis for
their social and economic contributions to the well-being of this country.
c.. 3. I am a writer who addresses religious, national, and
international issues.
d.. 4. I am a Canadian activist -- not only a Canadian activist
but a Canadian Muslim activist -- living in a post 9/11 era, marked by
dangerously high levels of Islamophobia and the threat of further erosion to
the civil liberties and human rights of the Muslim minority right here in
Canada.
I agree with the notion that in Canada anyone can say almost
anything, but the sad reality is only those with money can print or communicate
it.

Journalists constantly make decisions about what other people
will read, hear, or see. They are guided by their backgrounds and values.
Factors such as standards of taste and judgments of importance also play a
role. No editorial choices to publish, or not to publish, are value-free.

Editors are trained professionals who are supposed to strive for
excellence. They should rise above personal views and follow basic principles
of balance and fairness.

For example, cartoons glorifying the Holocaust, making fun of
Jews, or violence against women; or those which ridicule gays, lesbians, the
disabled, the mentally challenged, etc., are usually not published.

But the case for Islam and Muslims is different. The offending
material is usually published. This is because:

a.. 1. There are too few Muslim journalists in any senior
editorial or corporate positions in Canada.
b.. 2. Islamic groups representing Canadian Muslims are not as
powerful as those representing Jews, gays, lesbians, women, the disabled, the
mentally challenged, and so on.
c.. 3. There is a general hostility towards Islam and Muslims
which stems from political conflicts like the ones resulting from the
occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.
d.. 4. The rise of fundamentalist Christianity and extreme
rightwing politicians, especially in the U.S.
e.. 5. Few Canadian journalists have ever met a Muslim or lived
among Muslims.
f.. 6. The high concentration of Canadian media ownership in
the hands of a few families or corporations, none of which are friendly to
Muslims.
In cases where objectionable material appears in a Canadian
publication, special interest groups usually protest in a number of ways: using

a.. (a). professional persuasion (e.g. meeting with editors);
b.. (b). political activism (e.g. asking elected politicians to
condemn the publication's lack of sensitivity);
c.. (c). emotional involvement (e.g. public expressions of
displeasure, such as writing op-ed’s, letters to the editor, phone calls to
complain, etc);
d.. (d). economic action (e.g. boycotts, picketing); and
e.. (e). legal or semi-legal responses (complaints to press
councils, the CTRC, hate law enforcement agencies, civil suits, human rights).
This multi-dimensional form of protest has been used, and will
continue to be used by special interest groups, seeking to prevent the
publication of objectionable material.

But when Canadian Muslims tried to use the same methods in the
case of the offending cartoons reprinted in Canada, months after appearing in a
Danish newspaper, they were labelled as extremists, fascists, Islamists,
or

Bismillah [IslamCity] The exposure of faked evidence for a thinktank report is a warning of the dangers of Britain's anti-Muslim media campaign

2007-12-23 Thread S A Hannan
The exposure of faked evidence for a thinktank report is a warning of the
dangers of Britain's anti-Muslim media campaign

Seumas Milne
Thursday December 20, 2007
The Guardian

Last Saturday, Ahmed Hassan, a 17-year-old Muslim student, was stabbed to death
in an unprovoked attack by a gang of white youths at Dewsbury railway station
in west Yorkshire. Two have now been charged with his murder, and police say
they are investigating whether there was a racial or religious motivation. In
the Muslim communities in Dewsbury and neighbouring Batley, where Hassan lived,
there's little doubt about it. In the run-up to today's Eid festival, Hassan's
family issued a statement saying they hoped their loss would help unite the
community and all faiths.
But divisions run deep in the area. The far-right British National party, which
has increasingly turned its racist venom against Muslims in recent years, won
over 5,000 votes in Dewsbury in the last general election, its highest tally in
the country. Its leader, Nick Griffin, has argued that his party must
capitalise on the growing wave of public hostility to Islam currently being
whipped up by the mass media. It's not hard to see why he sees an opportunity.
Since the July 2005 bombings in London, there has been a stream of
sensationalised and poisonous stories about Britain's Muslims.
This media onslaught - often based on research by apparently reliable
thinktanks - has clearly fed anti-Muslim prejudice. Combined with hyped
terror-plot reports, the point has now been reached where Britons are found in
polls to be more suspicious of Muslims than are Americans or citizens of any
other major European state. For many Muslims, that heightens a sense of
intimidation and alienation. For a minority, it translates into Islamophobic
violence on the streets: Asian people are now twice as likely to be stabbed to
death as a decade ago, and four out of five convictions for religiously
aggravated offences last year involved attacks on Muslims.
But now the seamy underbelly of this dangerous campaign is coming to light. At
the end of October, the influential Conservative-linked thinktank Policy
Exchange published a report entitled The Hijacking of British Islam, which
claimed that 26 out of nearly 100 mosques surveyed had been found to be selling
extremist material, some of it antisemitic, misogynistic, separatist and
homophobic. The story was given top billing by newspapers and broadcasters.
One in four British mosques is in the grip of extremism, the Sun screamed,
while the Times splashed it across its front page under the headline: Lessons
in hate found at leading mosques.
But last week, BBC's Newsnight programme - previously not shy of running
inflammatory items itself on the Muslim community - revealed that a forensic
examination of five receipts provided by Policy Exchange for the material had
found them to be either faked, written by the same person, and/or were not
issued by the mosques in question. A sixth receipt was also regarded as
unreliable.
It might be supposed that receipts from the other 20 mosques were nevertheless
found to be authentic and that Policy Exchange's basic case held. Not so.
Newsnight didn't have the resources to check them. But it has since emerged
that in one of these cases, Edinburgh central mosque, the mosque authorities
insist books said by Policy Exchange to have been found there were in fact
dumped in its grounds after the report was published. In another, the Times has
this week had to publish an apology to East London mosque chairman Dr Muhammad
Abdul Bari, after reporting Policy Exchange's claim that the mosque was selling
extremist literature.
Yesterday I contacted yet another mosque, Rochdale Central, claimed by Policy
Exchange to have provided a receipt for extremist literature. No, said the
imam, Hafiz Ikram, we haven't got a bookshop and we don't sell books. Once or
twice a year, people set up stalls in the carpark outside the mosque after
Friday prayers, but they have nothing to do with us. That makes all nine
receipts so far investigated either fabricated or inaccurate.
Policy Exchange insists it is standing by its research. But, given the evidence
of falsification, it clearly cannot be regarded as reliable, nor can there be
any confidence that the mosques supposedly surveyed were a representative
sample. The thinktank has form in this area: earlier this year, the methodology
and reliability of another heavily publicised report on Muslim separatism came
under heavyweight academic attack. But it was still used by David Cameron to
rubbish multiculturalism.
Charles Moore, Policy Exchange's chairman and former Daily Telegraph editor,
claims Newsnight told a small story about dodgy receipts to kill a much
bigger story - that extremist literature was available in the mosques. But
the extent of that availability is crucial: one of Policy Exchange's
researchers told Newsnight

  document.write(cnnRenderT1TimeStamp(119878828));Blair converts to
Catholicism Tony Blair, has converted to Catholicism, officials said Saturday.
Blair had long been a member of the Church of England.

Some good news for some are bad news.. for others
  and to loose a bad-thing is not a lostbut a gain .

Today the Anglican Church has won in the lost of Tony Blair
and the Catholic Church has lost in admitting someone like Tony.

But , who am I to judge ??

At least being a Catholic Tony would now have to confess ,
  as each good Catholic does...regularly
but then and again... who needs the confession of any liar ??

  PS :
Eventually , and for the sake of honesty ,
or rather for the sake of his political-honesty,
Tony Blair could convert into Judaism instead of Catholicism
if only Judaism would have anything to do with the Zionism ,
but it does not !! anyhow.
