[~chia7712], what do you mean "fill the fix version"?

Indeed it is committed to the master only and not to 2.0, because the entire
path for CellChunkMap is not yet finished. However, addition of this JIRA
shouldn't "hurt" Release 2.0, just an additional code. But probably some more
regression testing will need to be done to ensure everything is still good. If
you all agree, I can promote the commit to 2.0.

So I suggest commit if all other comments are addressed. Then will look at
code and improve if required. So +1

Attached yet another patch after recent review comments by [~ram_krish]. Thanks
Ram!

[~ram_krish], [~anoop.hbase], [~eshcar], what are you saying about committing
this code? The code is not yet going to be exercised, but better to commit it
and continue to the next issue. Whatever we don't like here, we can fix in the
next JIRAs.
Please respond :)

I can not recreate the failures on my machines, I believe they are not related
to the new code. Also findbugs issues are not on the files that were changed by
this patch. I will wait, rebase and retry to submit the patch.

In the meanwhile [~anoop.hbase], [~ram_krish], [~stack], [~eshcar], you are
welcome to review and comment on the recent patch on the RB. So the process of
commit will be faster, once it passes QA.

The final patch is uploaded. I would like to hear your opinion for committing
this code.

[~anoop.hbase], [~ram_krish], [~stack], [~eshcar], please take a look on the
last version.
All your previous comments and questions are addressed on the RB.

I want to continue to the next step: variable size chunks and supporting all
kinds of cells.
So please respond :)

I have added a new patch here and on the review board, that includes many
review comment fixes.
[~anoop.hbase] and [~stack] please take a look if you can as I didn't hear your
comments yet.
All others are also very welcome!

[~stack], I have opened HBASE-18251 to address the issue of unnecessary get()
in first()/last() methods in the CellSet and as I said I have HBASE-18232 for
variable size chunks. I promise not to forget about large Cells :)

bq. ...are you in favor of adding the fix in this JIRA?

It can be separate JIRA of course. My concern is that it will be forgotten or
that the current implementation somehow has no consideration of large Cells and
even precludes our being able to add them after. Thanks [~anastas]

In RB I am suggesting to use a cell set factory class/methods instead of adding
3 classes to the ImmutableSegment hierarchy.
The single behavioral difference (for computing change in heap size) can be
delegated to cell set and from there to cell flat map.

Thank you everyone for the comments so far!

bq. When big cells, what happens? Where/how will big cells be addressed?

The "big" cells are those bigger than the size of the chunk and thus not
allocated via MSLAB. In CellChunkMap everything must be on a chunk. One
possibility is to enlarge the chunk size. Currently there is an assert on cells
not allocated via MSLAB. This issue is going to be addressed just after I
finish with CellChunkMap integration. I have opened HBASE-18232 for that. This
JIRA is already big enough to add anything else to it.

bq. Did this issue get filed? Link it here if it did?

I didn't fix it here, because I was suggested to open a separate issue for
that. However, the fix is really small, [~stack], are you in favor of adding
the fix in this JIRA?

bq. ...we already have the correct Cell in our hands. Why do we do another logN

I left some comments on review board, will continue reviewing other parts.
I am not sure that extending the Segment hierarchy is the right decision.
>From briefly reviewing the code it seems that extending CellSet and/or adding
>CellSetFactory is more appropriate.
But I will give more concrete comments when I get dipper into the code.

Hi [~stack], [~anoop.hbase], [~ram_krish],

I am publishing a big patch including integration of the CellChunkMap, without
supporting cells bigger than chunks. (https://reviews.apache.org/r/60083/)
Those are changes in the patch:
1. Adding ability to flatten, merge and compact into CellChunkMap
2. Making flattening a creational pattern
3. Adding hirerachy of immutable chunks
4. Adding the process of "strengthening" of the pointers in the ChunkCreator's
mapping
5. Updating test

Please start reviewing, may be take it part by part...
Thanks!
Anastasia

May be the previous scenario was not detailed enough, here is the more detailed
one:

1. Chunk C was allocated and got ID 5
1.1 After a while, C and all its cells are not in any use any longer
2. C was reclaimed and removed from mapping, but was returned to pool and is
still holding ID 5
3. C was reused from pool and returned to the user once again
3.1 Cell A was allocated on C (new cell)
4. Cell residing on C is asked what is its chunk id and 5 is the answer
5. ChunkCreator is asked to translate chunk ID 5, but returns null, because C's
mapping was removed at Step 2

bq. when the cell is in use for any reason then we should not be returning that
back to pool right?
In time when chunk was reclaimed all its cells were not in use. Chunk was
returned to ChunkCreator legitimately. The problem is that chunk was reused and
its mapping was deleted.

when the cell is in use for any reason then we should not be returning that

At step 3 the chunkId Map in chunkCreator should be having the id for that
chunk. Why do you think chunkCreator will return null?

bq.Why do we remove the mapping of the chunks later added to the pool back
again? Those chunks can be used once again and their chunk ID maybe required...
This has been done to avoid having the map with chunkIds in them for a long
time. Now if you getChunk() there every time we get a chunk we put the id into
the map. So every time we putback the chunk we need to remove them. Anyway the
chunk has already got the id associated with it. So it is not the new id every
time

I have one more question regarding the ChunkCreator, when the chunks are
reclaimed we run the following code:

{code}
/**
 * Add the chunks to the pool, when the pool achieves the max size, it will
skip the remaining
 * chunks
 * @param chunks
 */
private void putbackChunks(Set chunks) {
  int toAdd = Math.min(chunks.size(), this.maxCount -
reclaimedChunks.size());
  Iterator iterator = chunks.iterator();
  while (iterator.hasNext()) {
Integer chunkId = iterator.next();
// remove the chunks every time though they are from the pool or not
Chunk chunk = ChunkCreator.this.removeChunk(chunkId);
if (chunk != null) {
  if (chunk.isFromPool() && toAdd > 0) {
reclaimedChunks.add(chunk);
  }
  toAdd--;
}
  }
}
{code}

Why do we remove the mapping of the chunks later added to the pool back again?
Those chunks can be used once again and their chunk ID maybe required...

I think your point is valid. Since we already do a Cell-Cell mapping only, the
key itself is going to be the actual Cell. So ideally no need for doing a

If we are already talking about... I wonder about the search for the first and
last keys in the CellSet

{code}
public Cell first() {
return this.delegatee.get(this.delegatee.firstKey());
  }

  public Cell last() {
return this.delegatee.get(this.delegatee.lastKey());
  }
{code}

As our mapping is from Cell to Cell after this.delegatee.firstKey() or
this.delegatee.lastKey() we already have the correct Cell in our hands. Why do
we do another logN traversal in this.delegatee.get()? Looks like a waste of
time...?

Further more, in CellFlatMaps this.delegatee.firstKey() and
this.delegatee.lastKey() are working in O(1) so adding O(logN) to it sounds not
so good... Any explanations?

Every ExtendedCell is a HeapSize impl. So we will end up calling KV.heapSize()
only

Thank you [~anoop.hbase]! I get what you are saying, but I still need more
guidance to get to the KeyValue.heapSize(). I am looking on
estimatedSerializedSizeOf:

{code}
public static int estimatedSerializedSizeOf(final Cell cell) {
if (cell instanceof ExtendedCell) {
  return ((ExtendedCell) cell).getSerializedSize(true) + Bytes.SIZEOF_INT;
}

return getSumOfCellElementLengths(cell) +
  // Use the KeyValue's infrastructure size presuming that another
implementation would have
  // same basic cost.
  KeyValue.ROW_LENGTH_SIZE + KeyValue.FAMILY_LENGTH_SIZE +
  // Serialization is probably preceded by a length (it is in the
KeyValueCodec at least).
  Bytes.SIZEOF_INT;
  }
{code}

I assume we are talking about ExtendedCell so looking on getSerializedSize (of
KeyValue). By the way why integer is added there, near getSerializedSize?

{code}
public int getSerializedSize(boolean withTags) {
if (withTags) {
  return this.length;
}
return this.getKeyLength() + this.getValueLength() +
KEYVALUE_INFRASTRUCTURE_SIZE;
  }
{code}

So I do not see KeyValue.heapSize() yet...

bq. memstoreSize.incMemstoreSize(cellSize, heapSize);
U can see we track 2 sizes here. The 1st one is the data size alone. ie. Sum of
all bytes length in key, value, (tags).
The second is the actual heap overhead. See
{code}
protected long heapSizeChange(Cell cell, boolean succ) {
if (succ) {
  return ClassSize
  .align(ClassSize.CONCURRENT_SKIPLISTMAP_ENTRY +
CellUtil.estimatedHeapSizeOf(cell));
}
return 0;
  }
{code}
estimatedHeapSizeOf - Makes use of the heapSize method any way.

While writing the integration I've encountered the following issue with the
sizes. Generally, the issue is that KeyValue.FIXED_OVERHEAD, meaning the size
of the Cell object is not counted as part of the any size. I am looking how
size of the cells in segment is calculated:

{code}
protected void updateMetaInfo(Cell cellToAdd, boolean succ, boolean mslabUsed,
  MemstoreSize memstoreSize) {
long cellSize = 0;
// If there's already a same cell in the CellSet and we are using MSLAB, we
must count in the
// MSLAB allocation size as well, or else there will be memory leak
(occupied heap size larger
// than the counted number)
if (succ || mslabUsed) {
  cellSize = getCellLength(cellToAdd);
}
long heapSize = heapSizeChange(cellToAdd, succ);
incSize(cellSize, heapSize);
if (memstoreSize != null) {
  memstoreSize.incMemstoreSize(cellSize, heapSize);
}
getTimeRangeTracker().includeTimestamp(cellToAdd);
minSequenceId = Math.min(minSequenceId, cellToAdd.getSequenceId());
// In no tags case this NoTagsKeyValue.getTagsLength() is a cheap call.
// When we use ACL CP or Visibility CP which deals with Tags during
// mutation, the TagRewriteCell.getTagsLength() is a cheaper call. We do not
// parse the byte[] to identify the tags length.
if (cellToAdd.getTagsLength() > 0) {
  tagsPresent = true;
}
  }
{code}

However, getCellLength() is implemented just as KeyValueUtil.length(cell) which
doesn't include counting Cell object size. I remember I was told that
KeyValue.heapSize() is responsible for counting both Cell "true" length and
Cell object size. This is true, but KeyValue.heapSize() is not on the path of
updating the segment size. From here I see that the size of CellArrayMap
overhead is extremely small...

{code}
// REFERENCE in the CellArrayMap all the rest is counted in KeyValue.heapSize()
CELL_ARRAY_MAP_ENTRY = align(REFERENCE);
{code}

[~anoop.hbase], [~ramkrishna], what do you think about it? Am I missing
something?
