orm-ness is important. But when our technical
director asks (of a Java application) 'Why does the window appear in the
wrong place?', it demotivates me somewhat. Until Java works with arbitrary
Unix window managers I won't be pushing
me to support each and
every window manager. This is crazy. They'll never be able to support all
window managers.
If they were to do the Right Thing and let the window manager manage windows
there wouldn't be /any/ code in the Java runtime to override the window
positions determ
javac to point to
kaffee? Mandrake 6.0 (modified RH 6.0) did that. Once I
deleted the aliases, Blackdown worked perfectly.

d leave it to the window manager (via interaction with the user if
necessary) to set the position. The JDK shouldn't have to /do/ anything.
Instead it forces the frame to appear at (0,0), overriding the window

There is a bug report on the JDC for this (id 4102292), though for some
illogical reason Sun have classified it as a request for enhancement rather
than a bug. Please go along and vote for it if you'd like to see something

No, it ain't X, and it ain't just Enlightenment. It's a fundamental problem
in Java which affects many window managers.

sounds pretty odd (I hesitate to say implausable, but that's
what I'm thinking..) since Swing lightweight components are pure
Java, and use exactly the same drawing support regardless of platform.
There's nothing in the Linux vs. Windows JDK
that should have any effect on Swing behaviour.

Interesting. I've just received a copy of IBM's Java Update e-mail
which says they're shipping a preview of JDK 1.2 for AIX, even though
it doesn't pass all of the JCK.
I wonder what their lawyers know that the Blackdown team doesn't.

ght Jini was pure Java, i.e., as soon as there is a compliant
JDK2 running on platform of choice, Jini is just a drop in, like
JFC, JSDK, or any other pure Java package.
Or is there native code in Jini that needs to be ported
platform by platform?
Thanks,
