[JAWS-Users] Re: Reg-Scrub and Scripts
Yes, this is more or less the way it works. RegScrubXP (which I've used for several years) has a serious focus problem and you _do_ need to keep pressing ALT+TAB to move away from, then back to the main program window. The scripts, as far as I've been able to determine, do nothing to overcome this. As to where you placed the scripts, you'd need to put them into the user files folder in every version of JAWS you have installed if you want them available regardless of which version you have loaded. There's no way to have any scripts installed in only one location and have them available to multiple versions of JAWS. - Original Message - From: one foxy lady [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws help jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, December 07, 2006 9:04 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reg-Scrub and Scripts I need advice please if I installed the jaws scripts into the correct version of jaws which I put them into 7.10 and am wondering if I should have placed them into jaws 7.0? [JAWS-Users] Re: Reg-Scrub and Scripts
Hi Hailley, If it helps any, when ever I use Reg Scrub XP, I always tend to end up using my Jaws cursor to click on the relevant buttons. I don't know why that happens, but since I use it very rarely, except when I notice that there is sluggishness or crashes on my system, or even what Windows calls hang-ups, I will run it once, and possibly two or three times until I get no problems found. In any case, whether you would like to use it once or twice, I always use the Jaws cursor to move around the window, as this is the easiest for me, instead of trying to guess on the different buttons I'm on. Besides, there are only a few buttons to click on. The first being the Reg Scrub XP Finds Problems Button, then, if you wish, you can use the Jaws cursor to arrow down to the portion of the window that details the status, where it says files examined, equals a large number, followed by files found and another number, then finally it will say reg scrub xp finds problems equals in process or completed. At this point, you can use the Jaws cursor to go down to the bottom of the window to click on the select all button after the program has completed it's scan. Then, all you have to do is cursor over to the fix selected problems button, and you're good to go. At this point, you might want to use the Jaws cursor to move to the same area where you read the status of the scan, and listen for the large numbers again, as I said above, and especially listen to whether Jaws says reg scrub xp fixes selected problems equals in progress or completed. Once it says that the fixing is completed, then you can just close the program with the alt-F4 command, or run another scan. Like I said, I find it better to run the scan two or three times until the program doesn't find any problems, and although it may seem that the damn thing always finds problems, don't worry, eventually, it will say that there were no problems found. I should note, that even though I outlined the steps to do a scan above, there is one or two caveats, or be carefuls. The first is that I may not be entirely accurate with the word completed, it may say finished, but pay particular attention to the equals and the progress statement, as this will tell you when it's finished. I wish the people who wrote the program would put a sound on the damn program to tell us blinks when it's done, but just like diarrhoea, you never know when it's done until you check for yourself...Don't ask. The last thing I want to mention, is that you should never do these scans too often. While a scan once in a while is a good thing, doing it once a week could ruin your registry in ways that could corrupt your version of Windows and cause it to have to be re-installed. Like I said, I only run it once in a blue moon, and only when I have examined and eliminated all other possibilities, like Jaws corruption, program corruption and when the restore hasn't worked. I always examine the MS Config first to make sure nothing is running that shouldn't be, because sometimes programs, spyware or viruses will install themselves without letting you know, and they will sometimes show up in the MS Config or the Task Manager. Like I said though, run this program sparingly, but when you do, run it well and completely. [JAWS-Users] Re: Reg-Scrub and Scripts
You're more than welcome Bob. Something I forgot to mention in my last post... Some may criticize why I run Reg Scrub several times, but the way I figure it, the registry is like a tree view, meaning that if you were to look at it from a sighted point of view, it would look like a tree view, so the program looks for any dead branches on the tree and deletes them. The more dead branches it finds, the more it has to collapse the tree until it gets to the basic limb where the branches come off of it. So, what does this mean? Well, taking the above structure into account, the dead links or pieces of the registry that Reg Scrub finds, will link to other parts of the registry that link to the dead link. The first time you run the program, it will find the dead link, and you have to find the other dead links that it has created when it found and deleted the original dead links. Keeping this in mind, I keep running the program until all the dead links are gone, and each link leads to another link that keeps on going and running smoothly, and that is why I run it several times until the program can't find any other dead links. I know, I know, it's as clear as mud, but hell, it works for me. If I might jump in here, the way I understand it is like this. [JAWS-Users] Re: Installing Jaws 7.0 on to another computer
I think this is correct, David. Sit licenses work totally differently, as best I understand it, from indiviedual licenses, so if you've got a private license, you can't use it on a machine that's tied into a system that's running a site license and vice-versa. I've never had any personal experience with a site license, but from the explanations I've heard, they're very different in terms of installing JAWS than an individual user license would be. - Original Message - From: David Ferrin [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, December 08, 2006 7:12 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Installing Jaws 7.0 on to another computer If I might jump in here, the way I understand it is like this. Hello everyone, Maybe someone can clear something up for me. Advice that was given to me on another list was do not clean out my registry unless I want to screw up my computer. I'm not sure if I should try this program, or not because if I mess something up I won't be able to fix it. If I were to use RegScrubXP to clean out my registry, and things did get messed up, would a system restore fix the problem? Just curious. [JAWS-Users] Re: RegScrubXP
Okay, To try and shorten up this thread with where to find this program I did a simple Google search and found the below listed link and then copied the authors description of what the software does and basic explanations of the software. Try at least doing a Google search first and then check out David's web site for this forum before asking where to look for some of the things you are asking about locating. It might cut back on some of the repeated entries here. http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/System_Maintenance_and_Repair_U tilities/RegScrubXP.html RegScrubXP description RegScrubXP is designed to delete unnecessary information from the System Registry of XP/NT2000 operating systems. This 'junk' is often left behind when programs are uninstalled, and the information is not needed anymore. Programmers mistakenly load the Registry with junk as well. The result of cleaning out the junk is a smaller, faster Registry. Your operating system accesses the Registry a lot, so keeping it clean is a good idea! - Safely cleans junk out of the System Registry, making it smaller and faster to access. - All changes made to the Registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. - You can make an exclusion list of Registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. - You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk. - RegScrubXP is absolutely free, no strings attached! Walt, Since I don't have a lot of experience with scripts, I have to ask an obvious question. It the scripts don't overcome the focus problem what sense does it make to install them? RegScrubXP (which I've used for several years) has a serious focus problem and you _do_ need to keep pressing ALT+TAB to move away from, then back to the main program window. The scripts, as far as I've been able to determine, do nothing to overcome this. As to where you placed the scripts, you'd need to put them into the user files folder in every version of JAWS you have installed if you want them available regardless of which version you have loaded. [JAWS-Users] Re: recovering some deleted files
ok many thanks, take care, regards, ashish - Original Message - From: Walt Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, December 08, 2006 6:48 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: recovering some deleted files There are file recovery programs, but I can't point you to any specific one that's free. The _real_ problem with recovering deleted files is the way the file system works. If you've had _any_ hard disk activity at all since deleting those files; and in Windows, it's virtually impossible not to have, since the swap file, if nothing else, guarantees hard drive activity; it's very possible that the space that was being used by the files you deleted may have already been reassigned and used by some other file. When you delete a file, you don't _really_ delete the file, only the entry for it in (I think this is right) the file allocation table, or FAT. The actual file contents remain on the drive. When you try to recover the deleted file, the first thing the program does is to check the entry in the FAT, go to the address that's stored there for the start of the file data on the disk, then it makes sure that all of the blocks that were assigned to the file you deleted are still assigned to that file. If some other program has written over even one block that was assigned to your old file, the file chain will be broken and the file will be unrecoverable. There used to be a program that was included as part of the Norton Utilities package that would recover files and it was completely accessible. I'm sure that there are programs around today that will work with all versions of Windows that would be equally accessible--there's nothing inherent in the nature of such a program that would make it inaccessible, since there's very little to be displayed. - Original Message - From: ashish [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, December 08, 2006 7:15 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] recovering some deleted files hello friends, I accidentally deleted some useful files from my computer and recycle bin, I have heard some program which can retrieve them , I want to know is any of them accessible with jaws? if yes please tell me where can I get it, take care, regards, ashish --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list%40googlegroups.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups JAWS Users List group.
