Hi Patti,

I get that message every so often.

I find the only solution is to run a good anti-spyware program such as
Spybot, Ad-Aware or No-Ad-Aware.

I find the latter to be more easier, Jaws friendly, as every aspect of the
program is accessible without scripts, and it detects items on your system
and labels them as non-critical, severe and dangerous.

It gives you the option of making back-up copies of the stuff it finds in
case you find that deleting it will adversely affect another program that
relies on the stuff, like Kazaa or Lime Wire.

Either way, I find it not necessary to make the back-ups and just delete the
stuff outright.

The program is relatively low-cost and very affordable and easy to obtain.

Let me know if you want more information.

Victor

Subject: [JAWS-Users] No Ad-Aware Information

Hi All,

This information is addressed to a number of people who asked for this
information, so I may address a number of things in this message.

First and foremost, to Hailley, I'm not sure I understand your question. If
you are saying you have this program, then great, I think it's a great
program and worth the money to purchase it.

It often catches things even Norton doesn't catch.

On the other hand, if you're saying that the program that you have isn't all
that great, that's fine too, people are entitled to their opinion, but you
have to make sure that you have the right program.

There is Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, which is free for the personal version, and
available from the JFW Lite site, but this program, simply called No
Ad-Aware is not free and is a program that my brother and I have been using
for quite a while.

As I said in my original post, No Ad-Aware does not require any scripts to
use with Jaws, and is completely accessible with Jaws version 5.00 and up.
I can't say if it is compatible with earlier versions of Jaws as I have
never tried it with earlier versions.

Anyway, Lavasoft's version of Ad-Aware requires scripts to make it
accessible and is free for personal use.

As I also said, No Ad-Aware is almost completely accessible without any
scripts, and even the shields and settings screens are completely
accessible.

I'm sorry if I seem to harp on so much about it's accessibility, but it's so
rare to find a computer program that is completely accessible. Even Spybot
for the Blind versions isn't completely accessible, and they claim to be
accessible for the blind, whereas this program makes no claim, whatsoever,
and yet it is totally accessible.

Anyway, enough of my ranting for today.

Either way, I hope you can clarify your question Hailley.

Now, as for the other person, I think it was Margaret, I believe the
registration stuff is located in the help menu.

I'm sorry, I really can't say where it is and what the process is as my
brother installed it when he installed all the other software on my new
laptop, but as soon as I get a chance, I'll ask him how he did it and write
this information back to you.

Lastly, some important information for those who have downloaded the trial
version, or have upgraded to the registered version, it is important that
you configure the program correctly.

You can do this by going into the options menu, and into the settings dialog
box, which is the first option in the menu.

Once in the dialog box, tab through the checkboxes and make sure that the
following is checked:

* automatically save log file
* always request confirmation before removing spyware

The option after these ones is automatically check for updates. This is one
that you must decide whether you want.

The Program does give you the option of updating the threat signatures
yourself manually by pressing the update button on the main console, or you
can elect to have the program do it as soon as you start it up.

I have a high speed internet connection and am therefore always connected to
the internet, so I have that checked on, so as soon as I turn on the
program, it automatically scans for updates to the program, and asks me if I
want to download it and initialize it.

The second setting you have to configure is the scan setting, so after
you've finished checking the boxes I've labelled above, tab over to the o.k.
button, and press the spacebar.

Afterwards, go back into your options menu, and up arrow to scan settings.

This is the important setting to configure, otherwise it does not run a
complete scan.

You see, what it gives you is the option for a full system scan, or a smart
scan, which takes less time.

However, the latter is not a full system scan, and, naturally, it neglects
to scan some things during this process, so I would recommend you set it to
do full system scan every time.

So, after the scan settings dialog box has opened, you'll land on the o.k.
button, don't ask me why, it just does this for no reason.

Either way, tab twice, and you'll land on a radio button. At this point you
can either up or down arrow to the desired choice, as there are only two
choices, perform a smart system scan, or perform a full system scan.

As I said, the latter should be chosen, as it is more complete and in-depth.

Once you've made your choice, tab once more and you'll land on a checkbox
that says include sub-folders and files in your scan. This should,
obviously, be checked.

Once you've checked this box, tab over to the o.k. button and you're done in
terms of setting up the scan and program portions of the program.

As for the other options, in the menu, I can't really say how to go through
them, such as the Active X

Below is a friend of mine experiencing some problems locating how to do a
system restore. I copied from the web site the info listed but guess she's
still needing assistance and I am not sure just how to tell her to find
 her
 system's restore feature.
 Can anyone help please?

 Hailley

Hi, I have windows xp pro and I guess the teck who set up this machine

didn't feel that I needed access to this function. I can't get into
 systems
tools, it only allows me access to internet explorer.

that is so weird, are you using xp? below is steps to locate the system's
restore feature provided you use xp which I guess I assumed you did..

Restoring your computer using System Restore, and Jaws.

This procedure was used successfully with Jaws 6.2, on an eMachine
 computer,
with an Intel 2.8ghz processor, 256mb ram, and 80gb hard drive, with the
display resolution set at 50% of the maximum available screen resolution,
and color pallet set at highest 32 bit.

 1. From the system restore window, choose, restore my computer to an
 earlier
time, and tab to the next button, and press enter.

 2. Use control home, to move to the top of the page, then arrow downuntil
you hear the current month and year. while arrowing down the page, you
 will
hear instructions for restoring your computer.

 3. While the cursor is positioned on the current month, shift tab, and you
will be on the previous month button. if you want to see the restore
 points
in the previous month, press enter on the previous month button.

 4. Follow the above steps to locate the month from which you want to
 select
a restore point from. Each time you select the previous month, or next
month, you can use the up and down arrow keys to move thru the text on the
 selected page.

 5. Once you have selected the month you want, from the available choices,,
arrow down the page until you hear the day of the week you want. This is
where a simple NotePad file of your restore points comes in handy. After
making a restore point, if you record this imformation in a file, you can
refer to it to see the exact date you want to restore to. This makes it
quicker to locate a restore point in the restore point calendar.

 6. place your cursor on a day of the week, and then tab until you hear
 Jaws
read a restore point, and from here you can use your up and down arrow
 keys
to see the list of restore points on the page.

 7. once you have found the restore point you want to use, tab to the next
 button, and press enter.

 8. Here you should get a confirmation page, so, start at the top of the
page, and arrow down to read the imformation.

 9. If you are satisfied with your selection, then tab to the next button
 and
press enter. The system restoration should begin.

 10. Do not disturb the computer during this process, your machine should
re-boot when the restore operation has been completed.

There may be a restore confirmation screen presented to you when the
 machine
re-boots, and you can okay this dialogue to close it, and resume using
 your
 computer.

NOTE This is how the process went on the system mentioned above using one
particular version of Jaws, and does not reflect how Jaws will read the
 imformation on every system.

 I

It will. Eric tells Jonathan this in the FS podcast. XP and Vista are
being jointly supported. your SMA on XP will work with Vista, and vice
versa, if you should downgrade for some reason. You don't lose an SMA
count if you upgrade to Vista from XP. You do need to have JAWS8 for this
upgrade. More info is due at fsactivate.com and probably more is about
to be published on this subject. But FS will be monitoring to make sure
that people's SMA's are properly honoured.

Downloading and installing adobe reader 8, You can download this program
from:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep3.html?option=fullorder=1type=language=Englishplatform=WinXPSP2esdcanbeused=1esdcanhandle=0hasjavascript=1getsconly=1getgtb=1x=0y=0

Once the website loads, tap the letter X two times to move to the check box
that says (free Google Toolbar) and tap the space bar to uncheck it. This
will insure that you don't inadvertently download this annoying Toolbar.

You then need to tap the letter B two times or until you move to the
(download Adobe Reader button) and then tap enter to start the download
process. If you hear a blupey sound, this means that the program is being
blocked and you will need to hold down Alt and tap the letter N. then tap
your applications key, down arrow to install and enter. This will tell your
computer that it is OK to download the program.

You then will receive a message asking if you would like to run or save this
file. Up-arrow to run and enter. The download process will start. It may
take a few minutes to download. When it is dun, you will be placed on a
install now button, tap enter on this button. You now will be placed on a
next button, tap enter on this button. You now will be placed on another
install button, enter on this button. Now just sit back and let it take care
of it's self. When it has finished installing, you will be placed on a
finish button. Just enter on this button to complete the install. Keep in
mind at any time you would like to repeat the last prompt spoken, just use
the JAWS repeat command insert plus tab.

Now you will need to set up the program. The license agreement will pop up.
Shift tab back to the except button and tap enter. Now an accessibility
option screen will pop up all you need to do hear is tab once to (use
recommended settings and skip setup button) and then tap enter. Now all you
need to do is use alt plus F4 to close the program and the next time you
receive a .PDF file you should be able to open it.

I hope these directions are clear, I put them together in about 10 minutes.

[JAWS-Users] Re: office 2007 for Victor

Subject: [JAWS-Users] office 2007 for Victor

Our man Ray has been a busy fellow. Never the less Victor might find this
 of interest.
 David Ferrin
 ***
 Hi Dave
Victor has posted that he is having problems with Word 2007 but from what
 I
have read he is using Jaws 7 and he should be using Jaws 8.
Anyhow here is what the New Features are with Jaws 8 using Word 2007.
 Special Characters in Microsoft Word

JAWS now recognizes the following special characters in Microsoft Word:
. Soft hyphen - Press CTRL+HYPHEN to insert a soft hyphen.
 . Non-breaking hyphen - Press CTRL+SHIFT+HYPHEN to insert a non-breaking
 hyphen.
 . Non-breaking space - Press CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE to insert a non-breaking
 space.

 Table Description in Microsoft Word

JAWS 8.0 can detect the color pattern and shading of table cells in
Microsoft Word. For example, if a cell is 50 percent shaded with a clear
 background,
JAWS will announce, Gray 50 percent shaded on clear pattern background.
Table description is on by default. Note: This functionality is not
 currently
 available in Word 2007.

Press INSERT+TAB if you want JAWS to repeat the cell description.

To disable table description, do the following:
 List of 4 items
 1. Open a Word document.
 2. Press INSERT+V to open the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.
 3. Use the ARROW keys to select Table Description, and press SPACEBAR to
 turn off this item.
 4. Close the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.

 Reading Tables in Microsoft Word

The following JAWS keystrokes, used for HTML tables on Web pages, can now
 be
 used with Word tables:
. Say Next Row - WINDOW Key+DOWN ARROW.
. Say Prior Row - WINDOW Key+UP ARROW.
 . Read Current Row - WINDOWS Key+5.
 . Read Current Row - WINDOWS Key+COMMA.
 . Read Current Column - WINDOWS Key+PERIOD.
. Say Next Column - WINDOWS Key+RIGHT ARROW.
. Say Prior Column - WINDOWS Key+LEFT ARROW.

An error message is announced if a key is pressed while not in a table.

JAWS always announces if the keystroke is entered while in the first or
 last
 row of the table.

Bullet Type Indication in Microsoft Word

JAWS can now read an outline-style list that contains bullets rather than
numerals. For example, if a Word document contains an outline list that
 uses
 different
bullet styles, JAWS announces these shapes as filled-round bullet,
hollow-round bullet, star bullet, and so on. Bullet Type Indication is on
 by
 default.

To disable bullet type indication, do the following:
 1. Open a Word document.
 2. Press INSERT+V to open the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.
 3. Use the ARROW keys to select Bullet type indication, and press SPACEBAR
 to turn off this item.
 4. Close the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.

Reading Footnotes, Endnotes, and Comments in Microsoft Word

When you turn on the Comments, Footnotes, Endnotes verbosity option,
JAWS now detects the presence of footnotes, endnotes, and comments even
 when
 performing
 the Say All command.

If you want JAWS to announce the contents of a footnote or endnote in a
 Word
 document, do the following:
 1. Open a Word document.
 2. Place the cursor on the footnote or endnote reference.
 3. Press ALT+SHIFT+E. JAWS reads the footnote or endnote.

If you want JAWS to announce the contents of a comment, do the following:
 1. Open a Word document.
 2. Place the cursor on the comment reference.
 3. Press CTRL+ALT+APOSTROPHE. JAWS reads the comment.
I do not know whether this will help him or not.
 What do you think.
He might have to buy Jaws 8.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Tables in Word

2007-01-17 Thread one foxy lady

Tables can be accessed by tab/shift tab, also you can press insert-8/up
arrow on the numpad to hear the line the cursor is on. Bear in mind tables
will let the cursor move from left to right in a cell one didget at a time
and at the end of the last cell on the last row, jaws will say a warning if
you press tab here it will add another row, so don't do this action unless
that's what your after. Just shift-tab to go back to the first cell in that
row.
You also can move up/down arrow as well and if you leave the tables jaws
will tell you this..
If you add an extra row by tabbing at the end of the table row last row, do
this to get rid of it..

while in that row you wish to delete press alt E, D arrow to delete row and
enter on it.

I have Adobe Flash Player 9 Active X. This is listed 2 times in my

Also, it shows that I have Adobe Shock Wave Player. What is that and do I

Should I get rid of all of this stuff and go with the Adobe 8 that

I apologize for my ignorance concerning this subject but I would really

When I try to send an email to the Friends distribution list, it gets
hung up in my out box with a

Not selected. A time out occurred while communicating with the server.
I can send everything else just fine. It only happens with this one

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 8 with saved emails

2007-01-08 Thread one foxy lady

I had a little problem today with jaws 8 trying to read an saved to my
documents email and jaws 8 just wasn't doing it..
I had Excel open and the email was info that needed to be copied from it to
the spreadsheet but had to close out that version and load jaws 7.10 to get
it to read..

I could alt tab and read the email with 8 if nothing else had focus..

Sarah -

Mine doesn't do it, either, but if you don't have the latest sound card
drivers, you can get them from the Creative Labs web site. They even have
a nice automatic tool that checks your system, identifies the card, and
installs the latest drivers.

However, before you go there, check out:

O. I'm probably miss spelling the card's title but I heard that there is
a pach for the card that will prevent it from crackling when jaws is
running through it. Where can one get this pach for the drivers? Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 8

2007-01-01 Thread one foxy lady

Hmmm, I installed Jaws 8 awhile ago and was uninterrupted by a phone call so
I pressed the control key and when I returned I had no speech Jaws had
installed before this happened except this was something else it was asking
me a box was unchecked was the only thing I could determine what was on the
screen at the time no other key functions provided any feedback..
I rebooted and I think least I'm hoping this is all it was asking at the
time to check if it was to start automatically, as when the reboot finished
I still had no speech..
I have went into all the settings and set it up to my likeling and so far so
good..knock knock grins.

I'm not experiencing any problems so far so good..
Just thought to run this by yall see if I didn't do something right. It
wasn't the other voices disk as I didn't install that one before yall think
that,lol

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws hot key question

2006-12-17 Thread one foxy lady

Well now I have a bit of a problem after testing that Control J command..all
of the emails are grouped as expanded or unexpanded. That never was the case
until I did that control J.
I have checked the box to expand all grouped messages but would rather it go
back the way it was before i even learned of the control J so is there a way
to undo all this?
So when I am up/down arrowing in my inbox all the messages will read as
read/unread and not as expanded/unexpanded?

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws hot key question

2006-12-17 Thread one foxy lady

did you have the email open first before pressing them keys?
if not jaws will say...replying to sender no open message. so you must have
the email open first for them keys to work and them keys
are...insert-shift-r

you can continue pressing control R if you are replying to someone's post on
the jaws users list which will go to everyone on the list.

You can read the list of problems and select the ones you want fixed.
 Then
tab to fix selected problems, or you can tab to the select all problems
 and
space on that, then tab to fix selected problems and space on that. I
always select all problems and let it fix them all. It seems always to

 plenty of them.

I apologize if you have already figured all this out. It took me a couple

But if ya don't have to then don't bother and the jaws-users web site tells

 Walt,

Since I don't have a lot of experience with scripts, I have to ask an
obvious question. It the scripts don't overcome the focus problem what
sense does it make to install them? Do they fix other problems? Is there
 a
place one can go to take a 101 course in JAWS scripts?

 thanks

Yes, this is more or less the way it works. RegScrubXP (which I've used
 for
several years) has a serious focus problem and you _do_ need to keep
pressing ALT+TAB to move away from, then back to the main program window.
The scripts, as far as I've been able to determine, do nothing to overcome
 this.

As to where you placed the scripts, you'd need to put them into the user
files folder in every version of JAWS you have installed if you want them
available regardless of which version you have loaded. There's no way to
have any scripts installed in only one location and have them available to
 multiple versions of JAWS.

No it looses focus. I pointed that out in my podcast about that.
 http://media.libsyn.com/media/marrie/the_reg_scrub_program.mp3
 Take care.

I need advice please if I installed the jaws scripts into the correct
version of jaws which I put them into 7.10 and am wondering if I
 should have
 placed them into jaws 7.0?
When I ran the program I kept loosing the window I could route jaws
 to read
but just doing the say line I would hear blank and when I did the
 title it
said the usual no window is active..
When I went to the desktop and alt tab then the reg scrub window
 appeared.
So I'm wondering if this is the way this works or if the scripts were
 placed
 into the wrong jaws version?

[JAWS-Users] Re: a strange issue with the properties dialogue in IE and jaws

2006-12-04 Thread one foxy lady

I had that problem with Jaws back on version 4.51. I was told to go to the
folders through the control panel and on the view page make sure that show
files/folders is not on.
I don't claim this will work but it's that way still on this computer and
I'm using jaws 7.10 just a thought..

I'm running 7.0 and I have seen this before in other verisons. I have
nothing behind that dialogue. that is the only one in focus. I have tried
using the jaws curser but that gave me no luck.

 Sarah -

What version of JAWS? Are you sure that there's nothing open in the
background that might be hiding part of that dialog? Are you running
 the
latest video drivers for your adapter card? I've never seen this with
 any
version of JAWS up to and including 8.0. When I press ALT+SPACEBAR,
 I'm not
given the option to maximize that particular window, so I doubt
 that's your
 problem.

Hello all. When I go to the advanced part of the options
 dialogue in
IE, I can't see whether things are checked or unchecked. Jaws won't
 tell
what is or is not checked. it will just say show pictures not
 show
pictures on or off. Can someone advise on how to fix this. This is
getting quite annoying. Thanks and have a good day.

Look at it this way my friend. How often do you take out the trash at
 your
house? In other words if you don't remember the last time you emptied your
recycle bin then it's most likely been too long. Stuff collects in there
and if you don't dump it out you're just wasting hard drive space. Go in
there and open up the file menu. You're on your own at that point to
 figure
it out. Once you do it will feel good to realize that you did it
 yourself.

Officially the last program that I know of that JAWS offers support for is
Quicken 2003. I'm sure if this has changed somebody will let us both
 know.
I use that program myself and it works great with JAWS. The sad part is
that trying to find an older program like that is ruff at best.

What I mean by a money program is a program that will help project how
long it will take to pay bills like credit lines. A friend says that in
Microsoft Money he can, say, put in a figure and an interest rate, and the
program calculates, in months, how long it will take to pay off the bill.
But he's sighted and wasn't sure whether Microsoft Money is
 Jaws-accessible.
If anyone knows of a user-friendly program like this would appreciate any
 help.

[JAWS-Users] Alt-Tab

2006-12-01 Thread one foxy lady

Hi Yall,

Is there any rhyme or reason why sometimes when alt-tabbing from one app to
another jaws will say something like task switching and other times it just
says the application?
Wondering if I'm doing something I'm not aware of over here for it to say
this?

Thanksya,

Hailley
